I live in the neighborhood and have wanted to try this place for years. I really wanted it to be good. The woman behind the counter was very polite and brought me ice water. Great place! But of a hole in the wall but once you see passed that the food is pretty authentic and made from scratch by the owners husband in the back--if you're feeling lucky throw in a few bucks in the machine to win a free dinner! I stopped here today, because I forgot soy sauce for my lunch that I brought from home. I wanted to buy something or at least pay for the sauce, but they couldn't accept my debit card for a small purchase (I know, I need to carry cash) The lady was so nice! I have to say I was not impressed with the overall presentation of the building. It looked ok on the outside but the inside just screams remodel. When I walked in the last in the front got up out of her lounge chair and was talking to a friend at the counter. Both stared at me and then he stepped a side so I could order. I only wanted a simple lunch chicken bowl like Joy teriyaki has and she stated that they have it but it's the number 12. $10 for the meal? I did get double portions but it is too much for someone wanting a quick lunch. So that I will say is a fail! The restaurant smelled VERY strong of bleach and it was hard to tolerate given I don't like the smell. It's difficult and painful for an east coast jewish girl to feel this blah and unemotional about chinese food. Makes me sad. And I really hate giving only one star. I just feel mean. But as I drove home last night from a fairly disappointing date (my first in over a year), I was hungry. So I decided that the I would turn it around by trying somewhere new. So I stopped at this place since I had driven by so very many times. I didn't think this place was straight out chinese.. I thought it was a teriyaki place. I guess I was wrong. I assumed prices would be quite cheap because of the bare bones appearance. It's big, bright (too bright), and there were many table and booths. No one was there (one couple came in for pick up) - so perhaps I should have stopped there for pause. I got a general gau's chicken. It came with rice. It cost $8. I drove home, excited for kitty cuddles, scrabble and chinese food. It was the worst chinese food I have had in portland, maybe anywhere. Not one vegetable in the mix, the chicken pieces were cut in shapes we don't usually see them. The sauce was sweet but it had a weird, bitter taste to it. I've been here a few times now and my boyfriend and I both enjoy their food (although there isn't really table service and the seating area isn't particularly nice, so we always get ours to go). I have been impressed with their salmon, it is always cooked perfectly (just slightly crispy on the edges but not overdone in the middle), and very flavorful. However you should be aware that it comes with shrimp and mushrooms (which were not obvious from the picture menu I ordered from), so after the first time I ordered it without those, and I've been nothing but pleased. Pretty disappointing. I frequent a lot of teriyaki places, and i base their quality on 2 things. Portion size and taste. While I'd give the taste here an above average rating(chicken breast, cooked to order, well charred), the portion of chicken was so small i left hungry. Very disappointed with our meal tonight- food did not taste fresh, the chicken and pork were really dry and the egg rolls were completely inedible. My husband and I have gone here since they first opened. The food is always good and the wait time is abouut 15 minutes. It is an older building that could use some upgrades but that would take away the charm to me at least. For other reviewers who have rated this place less than desirable, I am not quite sure what they are looking for, my guess is they dont usually eat at this type of establishment so of course they would feel like it was a dump. They have kept thier prices low through the years even with the recession. I am a huge fan of thiers and I am on my way now to pick up and order of thier HOT and SPICY noodles which is a go to when we are suffering from a cold. Hope you will at least have an open mind and try it out as they are worth it. And the Mongolian Grill across the street is much more spendy. I went there once and literally waited 1 hour for a to go order so to me there is no comparison. Also the staff is always friendly and curtious. read more
