Since the new owners took over a few weeks back, two things that make this place a night and day difference: #1- The food went from rubbery, unflavored, & just plain gross to really damn good. Its worth giving them a second try if you were like me and refused to eat here. The crab puffs & egg foo young are now a MUST try. #2- The new night bartender Angela they hired gives this place a whole new vibe! She is polite (unlike the other night bartender) She's friendly (unlike the other night bartender) You wont wait long, if at all; even when the place is at max capacity, that girl moves her ass (unlike the other night bartender) and talk about know how to twist a cocktail Hands down, she is honestly one of the best around Im not even going to discuss the short hair blonde lady, she just be zooted 97% of the time. This spot hit the mark for exactly what we needed. We were in town for a wedding and, after a night out, wanted something simple, greasy, nearby, and satisfying. We first checked out the lounge but quickly realized the bar area was the place to be. With only two booths and a handful of tables, it's definitely better suited for smaller groups if you want to sit on that side. The music was lively, the service attentive, and the vibe just right for a us. We ordered crab puffs (okay, not the best), egg rolls (also just okay), General Tso's chicken (surprisingly good--not overly fried, well-seasoned, with a nice little kick), and beef lo mein (a bit greasy but exactly what we were looking for). Add in about five beers and a soda, and the bill came to around $80--not bad at all. If you're nearby and need a solid base after a night out, this place delivers. read more

We were looking for someplace new to try and since we hadn't been here before Northside won out. The bar side seemed to be doing a brisk business so we stayed on the restaurant side which surprised the owner (?) or chef or whatever he was. He was friendly, but it took him several minutes to get everything for us, plus our table and the others weren't the best cleaned tables, so it didn't matter if we picked another table. Plus the place smelled like old grease. Both our chicken dishes were just chicken and onions with different sauces no other vegetables to differentiate. The food wasn't bad, but it was a bit disappointing. Not the worse we've had, but nothing to inspire us to come back. I have a feeling they survive for bar business and the breakfast menu. Just guessing. Too many good places to enjoy that makes Northside a one trip visit. read more

A solid three. This is a good three. Very secure in its dive status ie. no doorhandle etc. However very polite and friendly. Dedicated regulars. Good crowd. I'm not sure why I'd return but wouldn't mind if I did. Food actually looked pretty ok. No complaints but not a lot to write home about either. read more

Needed to get some lunch so stopped here. Restaurant side closed so went to bar. Asked bartender if we could eat in lounge.. she said yes. We ordered then went to play video games. Used winnings to cover some of lunch. She said we owed more so gave her another 20. Got change but then we realize she overcharged us. When we told her, she got an attitude. We got refunded but she said this is a bar not a restaurant! The restaurant finally opened so wanted to be away from this woman. We moved over but she was also the server. When we talked with the owner, he said we were causing trouble by moving around. He had a nasty attitude. He even chased us down to see if we paid. The place is dumpy and everybody hates their job there. Food mediocre and chipped dishes and glasses. 2 dollar refills on Coke. Don't go here unless you need to be treated badly. read more

The food was good (brocolli beef), but my glass had lipstick on it (was clean but was stick on from previous person, i could scratch it off), they didnt offer me hot tea, no combination meals like normal chinese restaurants have, didnt offer a fortune cookie and had to ask for one and it tasted off--probably because it was old from them never giving them out), didnt refill water once, forgot about me and i was the only patron in the establishment, and had to hunt him down after 20 minutes of waiting after my meal; found him in kitchen reading. The restaurant had a weird smell when i walked in, and the bathroom smelled like someone died in it. The restaurant was in need of some visual repairs on interior walls. I was in on a tuesday from 7:30 to 8:30 and no other customers, take out calls etc. im only giving this a 3 star because i liked the taste of the food otherwise itd be 1. read more

I just moved to the Portland area and wanted to try some nearby Chinese cuisine. Not one to judge a book by it's cover, I wanted to try Northside since it was very close to my new home. I was pleasantly surprised with the employees, the chef himself was very kind and open to questions--he even served me himself! I had the beef and broccoli, and honestly I was expecting it to be a bit oily and bland. However, the broccoli had a nice crunch. The sauce was simmered just right, making the oil almost negligible. The beef was soft and tender. There were bits of garlic that really made the dish all come together. I even ordered a second serving to go! My advice to anyone in the area would be not to assume badly of an establishment based on appearances alone. I was apprehensive given everything going on in Portland at the moment. But this place was a rare hidden gem. Real Chinese food served by someone who genuinely cares. read more

For Chinese take out, this place is surprisingly good. It's your typical dumpy NoPo gambling bar with a neglected restaurant attached, and I doubt the American food is very good, but somehow, they manage to make some mighty tasty Chinese food. Call in your order, pick it up 15 minutes later, and enjoy it at home. This is the only decent Chinese food I know of in NoPo other than Mar's Meadows, and it's in a much better location than Mar's. read more

Horrible business I ordered the sesame chicken that came with cocktail sauce when I asked for a different sauce the manager stated they were all out. When asked to about the mushy breading on the chicken he said there was nothing he could do!!!!! I wouldn't ever spend my money here again. Also he charges for to go boxes apparently and when he was given the .50 he asked for he said he didn't accept pennies. Food was trash service was trash. read more

The four stars are for the food, it's really good, but it's a dive bar so keep that in mind but don't let that stop you from checking it out. No combo plates offered because the food is made to order. Everything is made from scratch and they don't use MSG. The woman behind the bar is one of the best bartenders/waitresses I've met in a long time. Personable, attentive and makes great drinks. This place has the BEST and I mean BEST Chinese food in town. I have had their shrimp (whole shrimp not cut in half like most places) that are absolutely HEAVENLY. This is the first time I ever submitted a complaint about a restaurant but I feel it had to be done. Me and my girlfriend ordered takeout from northside restaurant and when we got it home and checked it out was the nastiest food I ever tasted. The soup tasted so much like bleach they must have used dish washer to cook with.so when I took it back and asked for my money back in a kindly fashion we were told to never come back to the restaurant again.no sorry no nothing. The guy was extremely rude. this place was awful. went here for lunch, there was a lunch menu on the door, when I asked for the lunch menu the bartender acted like she didn't know what I was talking about. finally she was like "oh, the lunch menu". I asked if any of the items were breaded. she pointed to the mandarin chicken, so I ordered it. when it came out it was not breaded, there were just a few thin chicken pieces in an inedible overly salty sauce, with a bunch of onions.
