Food was okay, nothing nasty or delicious. The service was awful, she told me the plate was just pork and no rice, so I ordered a side of rice extra. Turns out the plate comes with rice and veggies. The Ross in the same parking lot happens to be my best retail therapy friend. I have a problem. And sometimes said problem makes me forget I'm starving and home is 10 minutes away, sooooo...I'm going to stop and get Happy Teriyaki. But one day, their window mentioned sushi specials. And teriyaki no longer existed. I took a leap of faith and ordered sushi from a teriyaki place. Especially because my boyfriend and I never want to eat sushi at the same time and I was on my own that night. It surpassed my expectations. I think the most expensive roll was around $9, the others I ordered were $6-7, and they were better than most sushi places here. Fresh, delicious, fast, cheap. The sushi menu isn't huge, but I'd eat every single roll they have. Honestly, for the price and location, this is my new sushi spot. Chicken is pretty good but they are way too stingy with the Teriyaki sauce. Their idea of extra sauce when you ask for it is to give you a thimble size cup. I'd be happy to pay extra to get an adequate amount for the somewhat dry chicken. Another local teriyaki place whose name rhymes with Tokyo... let you put it on yourself. Meh. Its about as comparable to panda express except with more flavor. Great in a pinch. Not really a whole lot of pizazz or charisma if you know what I mean. Ive definitely had worse meals, but I think the service was a little blase and the whole experience was underwhelming. This was one of the first restaurants I visited when I moved into my place in southeast four years ago. I have been back once or twice since and have never had a bad experience. They serve what you would expect... mostly beef and chicken teriyaki dishes over rice with steamed vegetables. They also offer dumplings and some noodle options. The prices for a rice bowl are about average ($6-$7, I believe). I've always taken mine to-go, but there is seating available inside as well. There's nothing remarkable about the food. It's solid, though, and definitely a workable option if you're in the area and squeezed for time. read more

If the name of a place has the word "Teriyaki" in it, I'll almost surely get around to trying them. If it also has the word "Happy", that's a cheerful spin too. That brought me to HAPPY TERIYAKI today. Their location at Eastport Plaza provides plenty of easy parking, which is a plus. I ordered a teriyaki chicken bowl. It was all good. . .the chicken was nicely grilled with char marks, the teriyaki sauce was the thick kind instead of the thin watery kind, and the steamed vegetables included my favorite superfood, broccoli. I noticed they like to keep the place clean and tidy. Every time a customer finished eating, the lady behind the counter would rush out to wipe off the table, put the bottles of condiments back in the right place, straighten out chairs, pick stuff off the floor, etc. I was impressed to see such fastidiousness. It was alright.. Not really that impressed with the food i received (chicken yakisoba). It tasted decent but nothing really that spectacular. The inside was small and a bit dirty. There was a gnat flying around my food. The price was pretty good. The menu was adequate. Typical teriyaki joint with unspectacular food and a somewhat cramped, dingy inside. Amazing food here. They have some things I haven't had anywhere else. Stop in and try the sweet potato tempura. My wife loves it! 3.5 stars rating. Was craving for teriyaki and yakisoba, this was near by and yelp had mixed reviews..thought I'd give it a try. Strong bleach/chemical detergent smell upon arrival. It practically made me lost my appetite as I was standing there debating if I should get teriyaki chicken or not. The boyfriend decided I should get the chicken while he get the beef, just to give this place a chance before faulting it out due to the smell. Portion sizes is small and cost is slightly over priced for the amount of food we got. Taste was alright not the authentic teriyaki/yakisoba I had had at other places. I ordered Yakisoba with tofu. It was closer to 8 and the lady said that they close at 8:30. So I was like ok that's enough time to eat but noted that was not very friendly to say. When food came out. Quickly I should admit. After having couple bites it left very unpleasant bitter taste like burnt oil. So I couldn't eat it. Be careful what you say at this place!! They charged me FULL dinner price at 11am (lunch hour) when I failed to say I wanted the lunch price. When I asked about what she charged me say stated "well you didn't say you wanted lunch" Hello?! It's 11am, not trying to have dinner yet. Not at all a friendly place either. Some of the Best Gyoza, Teriyaki Chicken you will find in Portland. Friends love the Sushi, it's always fresh. The prices are great for the portions, usually 7 bucks or so for a meal. They are always very friendly and helpful. I always just pick some up on the way home from jogging and I'm never waiting long. read more

My favorite Teriyaki place in Portland. I'm lucky my boyfriend lives close to this gem or I would of never gone here. I love the chicken. It's always has a little crunch to it. I'm not big on veggies and usually don't get them but a few weeks a go I spaced asking for them not to be put on with my dinner. The cabbage was good, but I could of had it with a little more crunch. This is my new favorite teriyaki place of southeast PDX, it is on par with Du's in St. John's and some other place downtown I cannot remember. Their teriyaki sauce is to die for, it has a hint of sweetness to it along with a lot of great flavor. They serve white meat as well, unlike the other Happy Teriyaki down the street on SE 82nd & Ogden near Flavel. I highly recommend their teriyaki chicken. If you were disappointed with this place I'd like to hear why because the only problem I've seen with this place is that they serve Pepsi and not Coca Cola, Which has nothing to do with their delicious food and kind service. The atmosphere is nice and quaint as well. Try it out and I'm sure you will be willing to come back again if you aren't already! Happy Teriyaki first sent me a text that my order was delayed and I was fine with that. Then I got a phone call from the restaurant that the driver wasn't able to locate my address. I asked for the address and the guy on the other line from the restaurant (not the driver) didn't even have the right address. It was such a bizarre, confusing conversation. At the end of it, the man on the phone said the restaurant was very busy and they had no driver. The man on the phone was so incredibly rude and dismissive. If I could give a rating of zero, I would. This is walking distance from my new place and the reviews looked promising. Menu is small but covers most of the bases. Got a little bit of everything so that we could get an idea of what was good and what wasn't. Gyoza were average. Gyoza sauce was just soy which was disappointing. Spring rolls were very large, but you could tell they'd been fried twice so the veggies inside were just mush while the outside had a nice crunch to it. Teriyaki beef, was average. The veggies served with the meal was just over steamed cabbage with carrots and broccoli with a hint of ginger and an orange slice on the side. Not really authentic Japanese side dishes. The Yaki soba was pretty good. Veggies had a nice crunch. Chicken was okay. All in all kind of average though. No authentic Japanese flavor. Tasted similar to a yaki soba kit you'd get from world market. Fine for DIY, and for the 7 bucks you pay here, fine, but you'd really want more authentic flavor to justify going out. We got a side of pork fried rice. Again, not very authentic. It was fried rice but it didn't have much pork in it. It had no soy or anything in terms of sauce/flavoring put in it. So it was just mixed veggies, a little fried egg, a little pork, fried up in a wok. Something you could do at home if you were pretending to make stir fry. The spicy pork was the highlight. It was strips of pork with onions in a spicy sweet teriyaki sauce. I actually enjoyed that quite a bit. Maybe not authentic but tasty. Oh, and the steamed rice was actually cooked very nicely. You'd think that's a small thing but it was noteworthy, because not only was it cooked well but tasted very nice too. Almost want to ask them what kind of rice they buy. They sell sushi, but given how slow the restaurant was I don't know that I have the courage to give it a try. The lady that checked us out at the register was polite and friendly. The restaurant was clean if a bit austere. They have a decent sized parking lot but I've never seen it full so maybe that should've been an indicator. All in all I'd rate this about on par with a typical mall food court dining scenario. The food was prepared well, for the most part. They need to not cook the spring rolls, freeze, and then refry. It's a recipe for terrible egg/spring rolls but everybody seems to do it now, and it's sad. I understand that they are labor intensive but still. For the price it's okay. I can't say it's terrible. It's not. It's edible food at a reasonable price. But with so many really good places in the area, particularly Asian restaurants, with equally reasonable prices, I can't think of why you'd choose this place over even a Panda Express. I have mixed feelings about this Happy Teriyaki location. I come here occasionally because it's close to work and the wait isn't long to get your food. They don't greet customers and you feel rushed to make a decision. Regardless, there's always a language barrier when I call in an order over the phone and, even, in person. I normally get their spicy teriyaki chicken and gyoza plate. To make a dish spicy, it's an additional charge of $1 but they ring me up wrong every time and end up having to collect more. I could recall one incident, it was a younger girl working the register and she'd charged wrong so she had to run my card a second time then rang more than the difference but she didn't understand what I was trying to tell her to rectify the situation. It's not the best teriyaki I've ever had and far from the worst--it's pretty standard, it's filling and hits the spot when I just want meat and rice. read more
