It's called TERRACE BAGELS. And I don't want a bagel for dinner!" "TOO BAD!!" At the will of Unlucky, I sat through many a dinner, lunch, and breakfast at Terrace bagels. I rarely had the luxury of indulging in my favorite treat there : CAJUN WAFFLE FRIES. Because I was being FORCED to eat at this place post Irish dance class, I really didn't get a chance to enjoy the quality of their wares. Unless the grandparents were in town and supplemented our bagel extravaganza with white fish and lox from Russ and Daughter's. Anyway, Terrace Bagels makes some SOLID bagels. I remember they were even written up in the New York Times. It takes experiencing half assed BADgels (i tried) to really appreciate the quality of the ones you've ingested your whole life! What can I say? I'm a sucker for a good bagel. Especially if it's the weekend. And especially if it's from Terrace Bagels. TB has some of the best bagels that I've ever had. And, the cream cheese? DECADENCE. Seriously. This amount of goodness should be illegal. I stop by TB every day for my morning iced coffee on the way to work. The staff is really friendly, and most already have my order down pat when I'm ready to ask for it. On one of the weekend days, my girlfriend and I usually treat ourselves to a bagel with cream cheese. The whole wheat and multigrain are my favs. As for cream cheese, these days, I'm a sucker for the olive pimiento. Mmmm! The line is literally out the door at TB on the weekends. Thankfully, the line is a little bit more manageable in the mornings over the course of the work week. Otherwise, being on time for work would be hard to come by. This all sounds perfect, right? Too good to be true, even. So why not five stars? Three reasons... 1. The flavored cream cheeses are significantly more expensive than the plain cream cheese, which I guess is to be expected, but I feel as if they are a little too extravagantly priced. Don't get me wrong, there are few illegal acts that I wouldn't commit in order to wrap my mouth around some pumpkin walnut, blueberry, or vegetable cream cheese...but do I really have to fork over an extra two bucks for it? 2. Cash only? UGH. I get that you don't want people paying with a card if they're just buying a $3.00 bagel, but a $10 minimum never hurt anybody. 3. Walk by TB at closing time, and you'll see tens of hundreds of bagels lined up in clear trash bags sitting on the curb, awaiting trash pick-up, being SO SAD AND LONELY. Seriously? We're throwing out all of this food?! I appreciate that TB clearly cares about the freshness of its bagels, so much so that it loses hefty revenue getting rid of the oldies, but, REALLY? Call a soup kitchen or food pantry and set up a pick-up. There are many things I love about Chicago. Unfortunately, the bagel selection is NOT one of them. In fact, 10 years in Chicago and I probably ate 3 bagels. None of them very good. Even at...THE BAGEL. Besides the fact that I realized yesterday that I've been on/off low-carb diets for a decade (and bagels don't quite fit in)...the bagels in Chicago suck. I'm sorry, but it's true. I have not gone all NYC-snob on all y'alls...but, in some areas...we must concede. Terrace Bagels was recommended to me by anyone/everyone who learned that I lived near Prospect Park in Brooklyn. So one fine, beautiful morning we strapped up the dog and headed over to see what all the round-mound-of-profound hype was all about. And, I am hear to say...PRETTY DAMN GOOD. Indeed. Two everything bagels with chive cream cheese, and we were three happy campers. (Yes, the dog got sizable chunks...she just looks so desperate when she's not sleeping). Fresh. Boiled to perfection, don't even need to toast 'em due to their soft inside, semi-crunch outside. The boy said the ordering process was a bit militant, but I can see that it may be necessary due to the high volume of folks trouncing from all over the place to stand in line for bagels. So, perfect morning? Terrace Bagels + Prospect Park lounging. I gleaned particular satisfaction from consuming inordinate amounts of carbs, slathered in full-fat cream cheese as we watched the bulk of Brooklyn run, bike and sweat their way around the park. When you are in NYC, even for a couple of days, it is your DUTY (just behind voting smart) to get bagels on a daily basis along with a cup of coffee and your newspaper. You can ditch the newspaper if you are on vacation. Last morning in the Rainy Apple, we decided to embark on a tour of Prospect Park - because we are bad-ass like that. But we couldn't do it (it ended up being something like a 5-mile loop, and my legs were not happy about it) without fueling up. Damn right!! And no toast for these two. When in Bagel Land... Our hostess - living the life in California for the time being - recommended Terrace Bagels. So Terrace Bagels we did. Some people say they are the best around. As a mere neophyte, I couldn't tell you but I know that I did dig mine - everything, for I don't choose - covered in egg and cheese. Perfect combo of crunchy and chewy boiled dough. Free coffee refills while you eat in, piping out from these weird looking machines at the right-side counter. No thrills, Brooklyn style. And with the park entrance two minutes away, you can chew away without feeling guilty and go for a run/walk/obstacle race afterward. read more

Great little spot in a wonderful part of town, offering up some damn fine bagels and plenty of smear and topping options. I loved finding a place that had unlimited coffee (pronounced: "coe-aww-fee") refills as long as you dine in. If we didn't have a full day of walking and exploring ahead of us, I probably would have stuck around for 16 or so cups and take a chance to read a book... And eat another bagel or two. The one that I did have (only one) was an everything with egg and cheese. The bagel was pretty much perfect! Very flavorful and the ideal amount of chew. It's taken me over a year, but I'm finally ready to admit it - this may be the best bagel I've ever had. Wait! What I really want to say is that Terrace Bagels rivals my favorite bagel spot in the world, a little place in North Jersey called [you're crazy if you think I'm goin' to tell you]. Great joint, but anyway... There will be so-called bagel purists out there who believe these doughy delicacies should be no bigger than a hockey puck. I say the bigger the better and, sure enough, Terrace has got some big-ass bagels. Give me every check-box in which you need me to break down my rating for these guys, and they are going to get high marks across the board. Perfectly crisp on the outside, flat-out heavenly on the inside, Terrace Bagels also happen to stay fresh for days. There's nothing more frustrating than a half-dozen bag that's gone bad by the next morning. Truth be told though, Terrace Bagels rarely get to see the next morning. The guys behind the counter do a great job of working the long line of customers day in and day out. They also happen to be occasionally hilarious. When I witnessed a clueless woman ask if the bagels were vegetarian, one of the dudes put his hands out to his sides and responded unsympathetically in his best Brooklynese, "Lady! It's bread!" Tourists, be advised. So, is this the best bagel out there? In New York City, for sure - and, as anyone can attest, that is certainly no small feat. For the vast majority of you, this is really all that should matter. But in the world? The question alone stresses me out. Is there really no such thing as two number ones? These are the best bagels I've had in New York, and that's saying something for a city like this one in which everyone claims that title. Let's take a step back -- the most important thing for a New York bagel* is how to get a crispy outer shell while still maintaining the doughy goodness of the contents on the inside. This is before there is schmear, or meat or anything on the bagel. If you can't pick up a few-hours-old bagel and still love breaking it apart and eating it, then you don't have the best bagels in the city. So if I'm late to a picnic in Prospect Park, and some Terrace Bagels have been sitting there for a few hours, I know the outer shell is still going to be crispy, the doughy inside will be delicious and even long after they're out of the oven, they'll still be better than 99% of all the bagels I've had in New York. Now, when you start adding their plethora of cream cheeses, or my personal favorite roast beef with lettuce, tomato and spicy mustard, you have a gigantic sandwich fit for a king.** The only downside here is the cash only aspect, and with no ATM in the building that's kind of an issue. But you can run across the street to the bodega over there and pick up cash if you need it. Every time there's a picnic in the park, this is where I'm coming for a sandwich. I love Terrace Bagels so much that I joined Yelp just to write a review of the place. I've been a New Yorker for less than a month, but a lover of bagels for more than 30 years and considered "walking distance to a bagel shop" one of the most exciting perks of becoming a city dweller. Little did I expect that not only would I be in walking distance to bagels, but that I would be walking distance to the Best Bagels I Have Ever Had. These bagels are the perfect size -- Big, but not so big that eating a bagel sandwich causes jaw dislocation. They're chewy without being too bread-y, and crispy on the outside without being hard. I order the same sandwich every time: Everything with creamed cheese, lox and onions. It's exceptional. I've had the sesame and poppys too, and the outer coating is ample (and there's significant coverage on both sides of the bagel, too). I freeze and then defrost about a dozen of their bagels a week -- it borders on addiction. There's a full service deli there as well, and a wide supply of flavored creamed cheeses. The place itself is small, but seems to run very efficiently, and there's a sit-down spot located next door through a separate entrance. Two quick anecdotes: 1) I met a friend recently and told him where I lived in Brooklyn. First question: "Have you been to Terrace Bagels yet?!" 2) Many other cafes around Windsor Terrace proudly advertise that they serve "Terrace bagels" as though this were a big selling point. They were fresh which I wasn't really expecting and they were perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, the mark of a fantastic bagel. Great bagels, always fresh - chewy on the inside and firm on the outside. I always get an everything with cream cheese, and it never fails to be delicious. These bagels are really really gooooooooood. That's 10 o's. I'd even venture as far as saying they make one of the best bagels in NYC. I'm prefacing this review by stating up front that I am a pain in the ass when it comes to bagel ordering. I like them just so, which often involves toasting (or not), a special kind of cream cheese (Terrace offers too many to count, with varying levels of fat content), and sometimes sumpin' else on top. I've never walked out of Terrace without exactly what I've wanted, even with multiple orders. As others have noted, the quality of these bagels is beyond; it's often difficult to get the contrasting (inside/outside) consistency just right, and they nail it. I am a sucker for Bagels and Terrace Bagels is awesome. You know I have problem when I wake up and the first thought in the morning is "Terrace Bagels - breakfast sandwich." Yes - I like them that much. They have probably the best breakfast sandwich prices in Brooklyn. For around $4 bucks you get a breakfast sandwich and 12oz coffee. By the way - the coffee is not too shabby either ($2.15 for a medium). I come here at least two to three times a week. Terrace Bagels has become my default go to spot in the mornings. I personally enjoy the eggs, canadian bacon, and cheese on a toasted sesame seed bagel. The workers here are nice and they try to be as efficient as can be. Yelp Tip: The line on the left is to order sandwiches and the line on the right is to pay. If you are just ordering a coffee, line up to the right. This place also has weekly breakfast sandwich specials that go up to 11:00 am. They also advertise a happy bagel hour that goes from 2:00 - 3:00. I think bagels are half-off (excludes cream cheese). After a certain hour - bagels are under a buck (excludes cream cheese). The location is about two short blocks from the 15th and Prospect Park Metro and is a staple of Windsor Terrace. I was so naive once. I lived in Boston, and I thought that I knew what bagels were. I would munch on a Finagle a Bagel or a Brueggers and think that I knew what life was. Then I moved to NYC, and found Terrace Bagels, and ten pounds later, I am blissfully aware of all that a bagel can be. Besides the perfect bagels, I love the tough guys behind the counter, I love the sweet waitresses at the 'cafe' next door, I love the baked salmon salad, the anthropomorphic pictures of bowtied pickles dancing with sexy bagels wearing bows they have hanging hanging on the walls. Terrace bagels has been a staple in windsor terrace forever. Go and watch the music video for Alanis Moriessette one hand in my pocket for reference. They just did a major renovation and they took over two store fronts. I always enjoy their food and for the most part everything is fresh and delicious. I suggest the chicken fantastic or a classic breakfast like a Bacon Egg and cheese etc. Bagels are always great they are my favorite bagel in Brooklyn. My only critiques and the reason a I took a star off are because #1 prices are a little expensive and # 2 they changed their their kaiser rolls. I am very upset about the change in rolls. Whatever roll they used before was just magical with a bacon egg and cheese and now the rolls are kinda plain. I pray they go back to the old rolls. First of all, their food is amazing. Definitely go here if you want a good bagel, lox, etc. They only get 4 stars because they've messed up my order three times in a row. They always toast bagels, which is really annoying, even when you don't request it. This isn't a bagel from Columbus, Ohio, it's from Brooklyn, so why would I want a fresh bagel burnt up? Today when I went in, I ordered lox spread, they accidentally rang me up as having lox, so a $4 bagel turned into a $10 bagel. I asked them about it, and the cashier said they accidentally put lox on instead. He offered to throw in tomato and onion if I wanted for free, so I took him up on his offer and didn't complain since I obviously like their lox. But when I got home, I saw that the bagel only had lox spread on it, not lox. So I spent $14 bucks for a bagel with cream cheese and an iced coffee. In NY you can truly get a good sandwich, which is a bad thing for your carb intake, but a good thing for your soul. I think this was first voyage to Park Slope and I found it to be cozy and nice. This local-yokel place with tons of pride has EVERY FRIKKIN MEAT AND SANDWICH TOPPING KNOWN TO MAN. Serioulsy. I heard a cop order and I like what he had to say, so that formed the basis of my sandwich. My scooped out garlic bagel (they physically scooped out the inside of the bagel for me! Is that normal?!) topped with a thinly pounded chicken cutlet, plentiful/garlicky sundried tomatoes, mayo, and lettuce was delicious. The apricot rugalach was fresh and tasty. They had like every version of cream cheese imaginable. The tofu chive on my friends bagel was a standout. The service was friendly and attentive. One day I woke up with an irresistible urge for belgian waffles, so I headed over this place. It didn't live up to my high hopes, it was all right. Though it was fluffy and light, it was not particularly tasty or anything, I didn't get any sauce and there was HALF a strawberry on top. Not worth it. My old friend and fellow Yelper (although she's elite...oooooo) got me inspired/feeling lame for not writing more so I thought I would rekindle my love for writing reviews with the best neighborhood spot around. I just moved to the slope/windsor terrace area recently and finding Terrace Bagels was one of the best things about moving here. Everything here is good. Don't believe what you read either, the service is great and some of the guys there are ALWAYS friendly and crack little jokes trying to make you smile during your 5 minutes in there. Yes, it can get busy but like anything wonderful in NY you have to wait in line a few minutes for it. :) Tons of different cream cheeses, any kind of sandwich, AMAZING bagels - chewy, soft, crispy on the outside, everything you have heard is true.... I am still looking for the good deli,but Terrace Bagels is on my short list of good bagel restaurants! This is a bagel store/deli/diner combo! There is a good variety of bagels BUT In my opinion, the bagels are just average. I have ordered a dozen bagels (which comes with a few free), fresh mozerella and tomato salad (YUM!) and antipasto salad (eh...I will pass next time). The menu is vast and includes items such as french toast (and other breakfast items)! I believe they are open till 10 pm most nights (double check that). They are generous with the cream cheese, and their mixed creamed cheeses are mixed with real ingredients- so strawberry cream cheese has chunks of strawberries and veggie cream cheese has slices of carrots and veggies.
