This is a very old church that was remolded into a restaurant. The look and atmosphere is amazing. The manager John was a tremendous host and our server Carlos was very charming and attentive to our needs We ordered a bottle of wine from their extensive wine list. Both of us loved to read the menu, and decided on dinner for the evening. We ordered the morel and wild mushroom bisque for the appetizers. It was outstanding. The flavor was amazing mushroom flavor served with toasted bread cruton floating on top. My entree was the Maple brined pork chop with apple Demi-glacé topped with maple-bacon almonds served with sweet potato gratin and spinach. The pork chop is huge, way too much for most people to eat, but so delicious that it is very hard to stop. The sweet potato gratin was great and the sautéed spinach a great addition. Clearly a great choice. My wife had the Uncle Vinny's Special Rigatoni with chicken. This is a visually beautiful plate when it arrives at the table. Everyone stops and looks and says "That looks delicious ", and it was! We both tasted each others food and agreed that the food was superb. Unfortunately I was not impressed. Went here thinking okay farm to table in an old church--sounds great! And since it was the only place opened after 9 Terrapin it was as everything else was closed. The atmosphere inside was very dated. Very old tables and chairs that looked like they were from the 80's. The arugula burrata salad was drowning in dressing, had 4 tiny tomatoes and the smallest piece of burrata I have ever seen. The "croutons" were extra. The whole dish looked like it should have cost about $9 tops not the $23 we were charged. The entree came out cold and the drinks finally came after we finished eating. As soon as I saw this used to be an old church I knew we had to come here. Being a family of atheists we had way to much fun joking how we were finally in a church! I barely even really looked at or considered the food, just was like we must go here! So we were really shocked when it ended up just being absolutely amazing. I mean all of us are such different people and we all loved it so much, really rare thing to happen lol. I think it's the first we've ever all agreed on something. Be very careful when you pay with credit or debit card. My bill (receipt) read $157.87. (I have the receipt) When I checked my bank account Terrapin charged $50 more...$207.87. And I left a cash tip for Maggie L. As of this writing, they have not responded. The food incidentally was meh at best. I wonder if others have experienced this. Update: I did get a refund and an apology. They stated the $50 tip they added was meant for another table's check... Patrick made her the center of attention and she loved it! The food was excellent. We had the short ribs, bolognese, fish and lamb shank. Calamari, mushroom bisque, quesadillas and ahi tuna. But they were good it would've brought the bite to the next level. We shared some tapas of duck quesadillas w a guaco on top it was nicely cooked crunchy tortilla w a good portion of duck inside. Then I had the artichoke fried w an aioli on top very crispy good flavor. The best bit was the ahi tuna on a wonton. Very good bite. Our waitstaff was great. No wait time and they have a couple of places to try inside and out. We chose the bistro. But would love next time to try the pavilion in the back or the patio because you get both menus. We were searching for a restaurant with an eclectic menu on line and found it wasn't easy. Then we drove by Terrapin and were drawn in by its unique architecture and style! ( it appears to have been a church) I liked that it had two menus. It had a bistro menu and a dining room menu. We chose the bistro as it was less expensive and the crowd seemed to be in the bar- not the restaurant. We were allowed to substitute sides easily which was refreshing. The server was always smiling and attentive. There seemed to be plenty of staff which nowadays is unusual. The menu was great. Tons of tapas priced under $7! We shared a crusted tuna, awesome mushroom soup and a shaved broccoli salad for our appetizer. I had the sliced sirloin steak which was cooked perfectly and came with a tangy horseradish sauce with mashed potatoes. My friends had the meyer lemon chicken breast and the pork chop with apple demiglaze. All were nice satisfying portions. Our cocktails were generous and old school. Four of us dined here last night and everything was delicious! We started with the spinach artichoke dip and a mushroom soup and loved them. I got the leg of lamb and my husband got the pork chop, both at the recommendation of our waiter and both were delicious! The pork chop was very moist and huge! The lamb fall off the bone and so big I couldn't finish it. Our server was Patrick who was so funny and a great server. Food came out fast and hot and not a single complaint with the meals. Rhinebeck is a lovely city with plenty to do and home to one of my favorite antique stores. Terrapin, a "new American cuisine" restaurant. It's in the most gorgeous building and has a stunning outdoor seating area. I've passed by this place countless times in the Summer, and it's always busy and filled with people on the patio enjoying the food and appearing content. I took this as a sign that this restaurant would be a hit. My mother, grandmother and I were starving, so we took a chance and went in. There were only a few others sitting down, so we were quickly waited to. I ordered from the vegetarian section - Caribbean Red Beans and Rice with Local Chickpea Tempeh, topped with queso frito, sauteed kale and sliced avocado. This dish was $35...so it better be worth my money...right? I had high expectations because it sounded delicious. I omitted the queso frito, but they brought it out anyway on the side. Words cannot begin to describe my disappointment when this is the dish they brought out. WHAT IS THIS?? I was honestly disrespected by the food that was placed in front of me. It literally looked like beans and rice from a can that they put in the microwave with ZERO seasoning. It was such a sad excuse for Caribbean food. There was minimal tempeh (which I hoped would be the saving grace) and not enough avocado. I'm honestly disturbed by this restaurant's audacity to confidently serve this dish to me for $35. The service was fine, the dining room could use some help. It felt odd and out of place. As if they placed tables with their eyes closed. Unfortunately I am unwilling to return. read more

The food here is always great whether you sit on the bistro side or the restaurant side, and the drinks are strong and taste amazing. The service is always attentive and consistently excellent, which makes the overall experience really enjoyable. My only wish is that they would change up the menu a little more often. They rotate between spring/summer and fall/winter menus, but it feels like many of the items have stayed the same for the last 3-4 years. First visit to Rhinebeck for work in a nearby area. I stayed at the Inn at Beekman Arms and could have easily eaten there, but while shopping around the cute town, a local woman suggested I try Terrapin. Ao glad I listened to her! As other reviews point out, the building itself is an old church and has lots of character. It fits perfectly with the entire vibe of the area- the feel that you are stepping back in time, or at least, getting to feel the past's presence in the now. So, I'll get right to the best part- the food. PLEASE GET THE CHICKEN SOUP WITH SOURDOUGH DUMPLINGS AND HOMEMADE CHICKEN BROTH. I've traveled for the past 20 years, eating out all over this country and I must say this is the BEST SOUP I'VE EVER HAD. The flavor is perfect. You can tell when something is made with love. This is it. I also had the quesadilla with figs and goat cheese (and something else). I can't remember the exact ingredients in the quesadilla because I was too spoiled with the soup and nothing could compare to it. I do remember that the quesadilla was tasty, but I definitely wished it had chicken in it. Again, I had the soup before the quesadilla and I was still wanting more. Next time, I'll definitely get more soup! I also had a glass of the Sancerre on the menu. It was delicious. A delightful Cherry sorbet (presented with a real cherry and a mint leaf) and a well-made, tasty decaf cappuccino ended this delicious adventure. For a nice and comfortable atmosphere, Terrapin Restaurant is the place to stop at. A reservation is highly recommended if someone wants a seat quickly. There is a decent amount of seating inside and also outside, with plenty of room to move around. It was fairly packed when we came, but our waitress did a great job moving it along. There's a lot on the menu to offer, and it's awesome to see the variety. Looking at it, some of the prices may jump out at you, but great quality food makes it reasonable. All the foods we got tasted delicious and wonderful, and the burger I got was one of the bests I've ever had, very juicy and a little messy. Another visit will sure come soon. read more

I was so excited to go to this restaurant. It was truly beautiful as mentioned lighting was perfect. Very crowded. But I must say. The service and front desk were terrible. We were seated in the higher floor above a table of very loud people. We asked to be moved. The woman from the front desk moved us and said. Sorry. We have many guests with parties. It's going to be loud. Ok. I could deal with it. The we waited 15 min for our waiter to come and greet us. We ordered drinks which arrived 5 min later. We ordered our meal. Not more than 10 min later we got our salads. As soon was we could finish our last bite and maybe 2nd sip of our drinks we were served our meal. 10 min later we were served our dessert Then the check. We were in and out of there in 1 hour !! 200$ later. We did enjoy our main course but watching other tables who arrived the same time we did just getting their first course was upsetting. Stopped in the bar area after a long day driving and doing errands. This restaurant & bar is really a gem in Rhinebeck. While we were only in for a beer and sandwich the experience was very positive for 5pm on a Thursday afternoon. Electing to sit at the bar we received very prompt service and each had the Reuben sandwich. This sandwich was outstanding with freshly cut Pastrami, Swiss, and thousand island dressing and a huge portion of fries with malt vinegar or ketchup (I selected the former). My only complaint was even though it was about 82 degrees outside it was freezing inside and I couldn't wait to get back out from under the ceiling fan. Service was prompt, efficient, courteous, and engaging. Could not have asked for a better wait staff member. read more

She recommended several plates, which was helpful. But I was super disappointed there were no seasonal specials. Here were are in farm country during the height of the season and nothing locally grown/in season fresh produce? What? The county fair is just down the road and in full swing! The menu was not exciting. Kind of all over the place, a bit random. Sandwiches, burgers, Pub food, Caribbean, Asian, Tapas and appetizers? The dinner menu was at the bottom, what a tease. Separate menus please. We decided to get the fig and brie quesadilla as an appetizer. It was a play on baked brie and fig in pastry. Honestly it was just ok. The flour tortilla had a bitter aftertaste. Skip it, the original is way better. The fish and chips were good/fine I was told. The shoestring fries were seasoned and tasty, but again slightly bitter aftertaste. Also ordered the crispy eggplant sandwich served with pesto and mozzarella. The sandwich had too much bread for me so I deconstructed and removed half. I wanted to taste the eggplant and mozzarella, not bread. Once again, there was that bitter aftertaste. It was the deep fried eggplant. The bitter aftertaste I realized was from old frying oil. The plates we ordered were generously sized. The servers were polite and attentive. Would I go back? The restaurant wasn't open for dinner yet, so we had a drink in the attached cafe which had a strong drink menu and many choices appropriate for lunch or a smaller dinner. Once the restaurant opened, we enjoyed our appetizers, lamb chops and goat cheese wontons. Both were amazing! For dinner, my friend had a mustard chicken dish that was very tasty and I the filet mignon. Both were excellent, as was the service. They needed a sauce or something. The wonton were good but not enough. 2 small pieces for $6. Each item on my small plate was $6. The lamb chop... may have had potential but I wasn't asked how I wanted it cooked and forgot to say I wanted it medium well. I wasnt gonna send back 1 chop. It was medium rare and I couldn't even bite into it. It was too chewy. The oysters were really small so mostly bloody mary mix which tasted good. I really wanted to like this place but just didn't care for the food. You could tell I didn't eat much of any of it. Ended up going next door (gigis) for dinner. read more
