First stop in Texas, it's got to be BBQ. A friend of ours recommend this spot, and right when we pulled up, we knew it was a good one. The small parking lot was full, plenty of people dining outside.. and we were hungry. Right when you walk in, the different smells instantly take over. It's cafeteria style so first you choice your sides. We went with the cream corn, coleslaw and beans. The line moved pretty quick so don't stress if you see a huge line. Once we got to the teams, you have plenty of options.. Julian and Ryan greeted us when we walked up. They asked us where we were from and asked us if this was our first time, it was. Instantly, they gave us a few pieces of burnt ends to try! Amazing! What a great start, HUGE shoutout to Julian and Ryan. This is what excellent customer service is, especially when it was so busy, they still made our experience personable and rememberable. They both deserve the recognition for going above and beyond. Thanks fellas! Back to the BBQ. We went with a half pound of brisket, half pound of pork ribs, and half pound of sausages. Trust me, half a pound of a lot of meat. The brisket was AMAZING. It was super tender, juicy and packed with flavor. Brisket is a MUST. The pork ribs were fall off the bone tender, and the sausages were on point. I recommend using the sauces, there's original, spicy and sweet. I personally like the spicy, just a tiny kick. The cream corn was delicious, sweet and every bite made me want more. The coleslaw was perfect, not too saucy and it had a sweet taste to it. I normally don't like beans but these were pretty good, had some brisket in it so that made it even better. Short wait for a table but patience, it'll be worth it. Overall, the food is GREAT! No better way to start your trip. Some of the best BBQ I've had in a long time. I had mac and cheese, banana pudding and brisket -- two slices. They don't ask if you want wet or lean -- they just slice the brisket in front of you. It was juicy and lean. It had a little fat on one edge. I paired it with the original barbecue sauce. The sweet was too sweet. The mac and cheese was cheesy and sticky, which is perfect. The banana pudding was OK. Not enough bananas and too many vanilla wafers. I tried the regular sausage. It was not good. We got there at 10 a.m. on a Saturday. It was not too crowded and we found parking in the lot. When in Austin Terry Black's Barbecue is a popular choice. Of course I found this establishment via Yelp and saw all the good reviews so my friend and I headed over. Upon arrival the first thing you immediately notice is the line wrapped around the building. We didn't know what to expect exactly but we got in line anyways. The line was to order food and it moved quickly. The restaurant had indoor and outdoor seating and you find your own table to sit at. On a busy day like ours it took a couple of minutes for tables to open up and you cannot save a seat prior to ordering food. Ordering food was cafeteria style and quick paced. You start by ordering your sides and desserts first and then move on to the meat. The meats you pay by weight and there were several options. The meat was tender and flavored well. We got the brisket and ribs. The sides could have been better nothing to really write home about. I got the beans and creamed corn. Finally tried terry, blacks, barbecue to see what all the fuss was about. The meat was tender but the rub of the beef ribs was so salty that it was not a good experience. The turkey was super salty all the way through every single bite. Brisket was not over salted but it was chewy hard -- not what I expected. I'll get to the point: This place lives up to its hype. We were in Austin for a layover and left the airport *just for Terry Black's... I'm so happy we did. Here's what I ordered: - 0.5 lbs brisket: By far the star of the show. The meat was juicy, with half of it a bit more fat-laden. I kept forgetting to add sauce, because the brisket itself was so full of flavor. I used the hot sauce, which wasn't particularly spicy but certainly added to the dish. I now wish my entire order was just brisket... - 0.5 lbs pork ribs: The ribs were also flavorful but just tougher to eat around the bones (of course), as they were drier. I thought the meat would fall off the bone, but that wasn't the case here. Still delicious, but definitely second to the brisket for me. - pint mac and cheese: Also delicious but a bit salty. The dish was very cheese-y -- in a good way -- but now that I've had it once, I would try a different dish next time. - banana pudding: This banana pudding was epic -- a small bit of cream, two layers of pudding, and slices of banana sandwiched between. The pudding was light and creamy, just the right amount of sweetness. I can't wait to find other banana pudding -- I can only hope it's just as yummy elsewhere. What can I say? I really enjoyed Terry Black's! I got the creamy corn, brisket (regular and burnt end) and pecan pie! Everything tasted great. The burnt end was perfect! Peppery, fatty and just great flavors. The creamy corn was too sweet for me, more of on the dessert side but I enjoyed it. The pecan pies I took home with me! Not too sweet and also perfect. The staff was so friendly. Parking was plentiful when I got here, but definitely had a line when I left so arrive early. Also be prepared to pay premium. This place is more on the expensive side but definitely worth it! It's lively inside. Music all around, people talking, line to order. I vote for Terry Black's Barbecue (not because of it being my first name's sake) but because it is good. So, get in line and start picking your sides ((I picked cole slaw and BBQ beans) Please note if I was not traveling the next day I would have tried all of the sides and doggie bagged the left overs.... Then, you choose your meat (I chose the brisket sandwich) and ordered some meat to go. Specifically, the beef ribs bone in, the pork ribs 2 1/2 # slabs and 3 home made sausages. I got to sit and eat my food as they packed up my ribs and sausages as I decided to take it with me to my next stop (my friend in DC commented about her liking and missing Austin ribs) So, $100+ later I left with a full and happy tummy with my to-go ribs in hand. I think it was the best $100 I spent in Austin yet! Looking forward to my next trip back. Fun place and great BBQ. Love the variety of sauces. Maybe be the best brisket I've had! We scrambled around to figure out how to order, get water, utensils, plates and BBQ sauce. Our tip is that you enter, get in the line to the right, order sides and select beverages and then move to the center counter to order meat that they cut, weigh, price and place on your tray right in front of you. Water and/or fountain drinks are at the back to the left of the meat counter. Then it's off to find a table and grab plates, plastic utensils, and different or more sauce in iced coolers on the patio if it's not on your table. Turn over is pretty fast so no problem getting a table. Parking is another issue. You may have the circle or park close by and walk over. Read the sign gas - some nearby businesses charge a fee or have you towed! Loved it and went back a second time while on our trip. read more

They're super helpful when you do get to the counter and make sure you order exactly what you want. I'd say skip the brisket. The place is cafeteria style, which works well with the atmosphere. There's a long line, but they let us buy a drink while waiting in line and the line goes quickly. First you choose your sides; I got potato salad & cole slaw. Then to the meat line, got 1/2 pound of pork ribs and 1/2 pound of beef brisket. After you pay for it all, you pick up your utensils. It all cost almost $50. 3 kinds of barbecue sauce on the table, original spicy and sweet. They're all great. Also a roll of paper towels on the table, you'll need it. Cole slaw was chunky and refreshing, as was potato salad. Both meats were very salty (took off one star), but good with the sauce. Restrooms are near the entrance, so you have to fight your way through the line of hungry customers to use the bathroom. read more

To begin, this restaurant is cafeteria style, you order your sides, than your protein... you pay, take your food and sit down to eat it! Ok.. back to the food, I don't eat beef or pork so I chose the turkey. My sides were Mac and cheese and green beans.. my husband and kids had pork ribs, sausage and beef ribs with a side of cornbread and creamed corn.Based on their feedback, the ribs and sausages were very flavorful and soft.. When in Texas, must eat BBQ. Especially brisket. The first stop after arriving in Austin was this place. My sister-in-law lives in Austin so she knew this place and was down to grab some BBQ for a later lunch. Even at 2:30 pm, there was still a decent line of people waiting. However, the line wasn't too bad (only waited 30 minutes or so). It was pretty cool that they had drinks available to purchase while standing in line because it was definitely hot outside! The cool thing about this location is that they cut the meat right in front of you when you get to the counter to place your order. We went with a pound of brisket (marbled), a beef rib, jalapeño cheese sausage, and a couple pork ribs along with a slaw. Brisket: absolutely fantastic! So juicy and flavorful. The marbled meat was so tender and just the right amount of smoke flavor. I would get more of this next time! Sausage: not bad, but pales in comparison to Franklin. Beef rib: pretty tasty but I felt like it was overpriced. One bone was over $40... Pork ribs: decent, but not the best I've had. Slaw: not bad. Decent slaw. Overall, Terry Black's has some really excellent brisket. On par with Franklin for sure. But the other stuff was decent, but not worth the price in my opinion. Everything you see in the picture was about $115 before tips. If I came here again, I would just get a bunch more brisket instead. Worth trying though! read more
