The good: The beef ribs were HUGE and the brisket was some of the most tender I have ever had!! The bbq sauces are what does the heavy lifting because they were great as well. The peach cobbler was also a highlight. The sides were just your regular bbq sides. The bad: The seasoning was lacking in the brisket and ribs. My son and I visited Terry Black's BBQ on Shepherd in Houston yesterday. Very nice place, great parking lot. Interesting to walk by all the smokers outside. We came on a Thursday at 11:30. The place was busy but not swamped. Ordering went well and the service was friendly. As others have said, you order your sides and desserts first at one station, and then move to the meat carving station to complete your order. My son got a sausage sandwich and I ordered 1/2 pound of moist brisket, 1/4 pound of turkey and 1/4 pound of regular sausage. For sides we got mac and cheese, Mexican Rice, and green beans. The brisket and the sides were the stars. The most brisket was excellent and both the mac and cheese and rice were oustanding. I didn't try the green beans. As far as the other proteins, the turkey was servicable but not as flavorful as some of their competitors and I wouldn't order the sausage again. Its hard for me to find sausage I really like at Central Texas style bbq places. For some reason Pappas BBQ has the best sausage in town for my taste, so I'm probably not the best judge for sausage. I think Terry Black's will be a good addition to the Houston BBQ scene, but isn't an absolute "I have to return" kind of place. I was a little worried going opening week, but we went around 11am on Saturday and had a small wait to order food and found a table right away. Service is fast. You order cafeteria style. You order your sides and slices of bread from the first station, then you order your protein and pay for your food at the next. Drink station is self serve and they have all the utensils and to-go boxes/containers there as well. Plenty of seating inside, upstairs, and outside. The brisket and the sides were all good. The Mac and cheese, potato salad, and coleslaw were all worth ordering again. We ordered sausage and it was good, but next time I will order more brisket instead and try the beef rib. Terry Black's is a great addition to Houston's high-end barbecue scene. The building is impressive, the atmosphere is great, and it's obvious they designed the whole operation for scale and high throughput. Even when it gets busy, I'd expect the line to move much faster than places like Truth or Pinkerton's. The staff was also excellent--very friendly, helpful, and genuinely eager to take care of everyone. As for the food, I thought the meat and sides were good, but not quite at the same level as Truth or Pinkerton's. Still, it's a very solid barbecue spot in a great location, and I'm glad to have another serious option in Houston. My only concern is that the parking lot seems a little small for how much traffic this place is probably going to get. read more

I've had Terry Black's BBQ in Austin a couple of times and I thought it was solid. Definitely not the best BBQ I've had but it lived up to its expectations. I am so happy that they just opened one in Houston so I waited for them to die down before giving it a try. Ima just say from my experience both Austin and Houston location were about the same. There are items that were better in Austin and vice versa. Let's start by saying the parking is okay, but if you come on the weekends expect to drive around until you find a spot, there's also street parking which we opted to do. The ambiance has a cool vibe to it with a country backyard type setting. Although it was extremely busy I felt that it was well organized. You start off at 1 station where you order your sides and desserts, then you go to the last station and order your meats and pay for your meal. The wait time was less than 5 minutes which I thought was well executed. Having two stations makes it less stressful and minimal wait times. They also forgot my sandwich but one of the workers chased me down, handed the sandwich & made sure I got everything. Nice work staff. I went ahead and ordered a handful of items for my friend and I to try. Pork ribs, regular sausage, moist brisket, chopped brisket sandwich, Mac & Cheese, green beans, potato salad, cream corn & peach cobbler. * Pork ribs- ribs were tendered and fall off the bone. It had a nice sweetness to it and some heat on the back end. Very pepper forward. 4/5 * Sausage- good flavor & good snap. 4/5 * Moist brisket- good bark, decent smoke rings, pepper forward, tendered and melt in your mouth. Solid brisket. 4.2/5 * Chopped brisket sandwich- good quality brisket, bread was fine. I prefer it to be toasted on the inside with a better quality bread like brioche bread. 3.5/5 * Mac & Cheese- simple, good bite but could've been more creamy. You serve this to me, I would not be mad about it. 3.5/5 * Green beans- bland, not a lot of flavor. Had to add some seasonings once I took it home. 2.5/5 * Potato salad- the Austin location was way better. I prefer mine to have more mustard in them. So this one in particular wasn't too tangy. Potatoes were more on the soft side close to mushy. 3/5 * Cream corn- creamy & sweet. 4/5 * Peach cobbler- it was a bit too sweet for my liking but I liked it. The pie crust was perfectly cooked. It's better if they had a scoop of vanilla ice cream to complement the cobbler. 4/5 I liked their spicy and regular bbq sauce, it was tangy and vinegary. Overall, I was satisfied with my dining experience. I'll be back in a couple of weeks with another group of friends to try out other items on the menu. read more

I am so disappointed. I had to leave a one-star review for Terry Black's because the Austin location I've been to was 100 times better than the Houston location, which I was incredibly excited about. Unfortunately, it was nowhere near worth the money. The Houston location just opened a couple of days ago, and I'll give credit where it's due: the location is great, the restaurant itself looks amazing, the barbecue pits are right when you walk in, and you can see them cooking the ribs and brisket. Everything was extremely clean, and the staff was very friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately, the food was a completely different story. I ordered the mac & cheese, rice, coleslaw, and about a pound of moist brisket. The sides were extremely bland. The mac & cheese had almost no flavor, the rice tasted like something I could have heated up from a microwaveable package, and the coleslaw had none of the tangy flavor I would expect. Overall, the sides were very disappointing. Then came the brisket. I specifically asked for moist brisket because I like mine fatty, juicy, and tender. The employee brought out one tray, opened it, and he immediately said, "I asked for moist." A few seconds later, another tray was brought out. He opened that one, sliced it once, looked around, and essentially raised his hand as if to say, "Who isn't listening?" He eventually walked back himself to choose another brisket before finally getting what he wanted. That should have been my warning. The brisket we received looked fantastic when it was sliced--about four or five slices totaling roughly a pound, for around $35. The top half was actually moist and delicious. But the bottom half was unbelievably tough. I was practically breaking the plastic knife trying to cut through it. It was like eating a well-done steak. For a place known for barbecue, and especially after specifically ordering moist brisket, that was incredibly disappointing!! We didn't even finish half of it and ended up leaving the rest on our plates. What made the experience even more disappointing was that, especially for a brand-new grand opening, I expected a manager or someone from management to walk around and ask customers how everything was going. Not once did anyone come by our table to ask how the food was or how our experience was at their new Houston location. I was with a couple of friends who had never been to Terry Black's before, and I had hyped it up so much based on my experience in Austin. They were extremely disappointed and said they would never come back. I hate leaving a one-star review, especially for a brand-new location, but I can only review the experience I had. Maybe other menu items are better, but based on the brisket and sides we ordered, there are so many other barbecue spots in Houston that are more consistent and deliver much better brisket. Unfortunately, this location is way off from the quality I've experienced at the Austin locations. The service was very friendly, and the setup and seating were nice, but at the end of the day, what matters most is the food. The turkey I had was dry, and the brisket was very average. Nothing about the food really stood out or justified the reputation. And honestly, charging extra for jalapeños, onions, and bread has to be one of the least Southern things a Texas BBQ joint can do. Those are basic accompaniments that traditionally come with your meat, and they cost practically nothing. It just feels unnecessarily nickel-and-dimey. Overall, the atmosphere and service were good, but the food needs a lot of work, is it an off day? We got here at 1030 when they opened and they let us in at 1025. Customer service is on point. I would like to mention Ghost who was very friendly and also Daniel who was simply excellent. He was kind, took his time to talk to us, followed up, and was absolutely superb. Great staff all around. The wait was very short even behind the eight people who cut us because the staff is so efficient. Sides are picked first and then someone carries your tray to the register where someone is there cutting and weighing your meat right before you pay. Place was well ventilated and I did not come out smelling like smoked meat which is a bonus for me. Brisket with the burnt ends was amazing, especially the burnt ends. The pork ribs were flavorful also. I did not love the barbecue sauces-they're a little sweet but you don't really need them for most of the meat. Mac and cheese was delicious. Corn was a little sweet for my liking. Very generous portions of the pickle and onions and white bread. Overall a good experience and going to go back next week and try the turkey! read more

I went here 2 days in a row on their second n third days of opening in Houston. One for lunch n the second for dinner. Combining menu items on my two visits I had Lean Brisket, Sausage, Spanish Rice, Mac n Cheese and Peach Cobbler. The flat side brisket was very delicious, smoky, juicy, tender and had a great amount of bark and fat. The sausage was also very delicious, smoky, crunchy with a soft inside, kinda spicy and nicely savory. Obviously a fattier meat and made so well like the brisket was in its way. The Spanish rice was a really delicious side dish and had a savory aroma to it and a moist, sticky texture. I would possibly get this every time when I want a side. I also really wanted to try their coleslaw, but for now won't eat several raw greens n fresh cabbage until this damn outbreak goes away, which hopefully it does soon. The mac n cheese on the second night I went seems a bit pale in color and not as deep golden like when I saw it the first day. It had good, robust noodles and overall 7 / 10 in taste imo. Definitely not bad, but I prefer a very dense, sticky type like the one from Killen's Bbq. The brisket didn't need sauce, but I still really liked both the spicy n sweet bbq sauces on the table. Both very good and not too runny or excessive in vinegar. The one meat I never put any sauce on is sausage, but I like to dip a few bites here n there when it comes to brisket, ribs and chicken. The peach cobbler was really delicious for a sweet treat and had nice, tasty, succulent peaches, good gel texture and a great, buttery, crumbly crust. It was pretty sweet and made with southern love. Much tastier than it even looked and I wouldn't be surprised if the peaches were fresh cut. The service from Kylie and Rob at the checkout counter was so welcoming, friendly, helpful and efficient. The service from employees at the front, side dish area and some others in the meat as well as table cleaning categories was also very welcoming and friendly too. We've been to the original Black's BBQ in Lockhart so we knew this one should be very good. It was. While i was taking a picture of the pits on the way in a young man wanted to know if i would like to look a little closer, yup, i would. He opened up a couple and showed me some cooking briskets and the 3 day process and he showed me some jalapeno n cheddar sausage links....i was duly impressed. We showed up a bit after 12 and didn't have to wait long to find a parking spot. The line was out the door but not by much and it moved pretty quickly. We got a small portion of some of the best cole slaw i've ever tasted. It paired very well with the 2 sausage links, half a pound of sliced moist end brisket and half a pound of pork ribs.....all 5 stars. Every table had 3 different BBQ sauces, this "Q" doesn't need a sauce but i had to try all of them, yum. Don't get the beef ribs--they don't trim them! I'll start by saying I'm no stranger to beef dino ribs. I've been getting them for years at Truth and other local barbecue spots, and I'm familiar with the composition of that piece of meat. That said, I can also tell when the exterior fat cap has been left on (standard practice is to trim it down to 1/4" before barbecuing)., and this restaurant doesn't trim its dino ribs--see photo. I'm really ticked I was charged $56 for an end rib that was literally half fat! Unfortunately, I got my order to go and didn't realize the poor quality till I was already home, and I couldn't go back to the restaurant to have it addressed due to needing to get back to work. Besides the beef rib ordeal, I also tried a few other things. The brisket was cut too thick and lacked smoke flavor and a red smoke ring. It was also dry and tough, even though I asked for moist. Additionally, the potato salad was quite bland, and the creamed corn was just sweet and lacked any other flavor depth. On a positive note, there was plenty of parking, the line moved fairly quickly, and the indoor and outdoor ambience is authentically rustic. If the management can bring the quality of the meat and sides up to the standard of the local barbecue circuit, it would be a great place to hang out with friends and family. read more

We were offered an informative tour by two of the very knowledgeable employees, Searcy & MJ, knew exactly what they were doing. Managing commercial scaled smokers are no joke...Searcy was a well experienced pitmaster, informed me of the process, the volume produced,air flow, safety techniques and shared his appreciation for Terry Black's refreshing approach to the BBQ industry and the unmatched respect & training for their employees. The entire visit was one everyone should experience on a regular basis. It's patio was beautiful and spacious, the two story interior offered ample seating and I applaud all the staff for keep the pace & offering very good customer service. This place will be an EPIC success. Oh, the well stocked bar was great as well...Try the black margaritas...Whew..paired perfectly with the bbq. I cant wait to plan my next visit.
