Good luck, folks. When you're a new customer and still signing up, they are all over you with service, tech visits and prompt replies to emails and phone calls. Once the system is installed, pray you don't have a problem because you'll barely get their attention. My inverter had a faulty circuit break that knocked out power to half my house about three weeks after installation. My electrician diagnosed the problem and installed a temporary fix, but said I would need Solar City to do the permanent repair. Forget the fact that they supposedly monitor your system to diagnose problems remotely - that didn't happen. Then, they ignored the email I sent to the service dept. Then they guy that I got on the phone said they couldn't send anyone until I first went home and told them which code was flashing on the digital readout. Really - we've gone from monitoring my system via the web to "we need you go out in the yard and tell us which light is flashing?" Only after I do that will they schedule a service call. This feels more like a cable company than some vaunted new solar provider. Thanks for killing off my enthusiasm for this service, SC. read more

An army of techs showed up on time, and in three hours had our system on the roof, and everything placed. they were courteous, communicative and efficient. Follow up visit for inspection was the same. Highly recommend. Highly. Other companies wanted tens of thousands to install. If you want it gone, they'll come and get it. It even looks great. I wanted to believe the one star reviews were some mistake and I could avoid the issues they had, but I was SOLD. The rep was nice, but NOT forthcoming. They bent information, led me to believe certain things, then after signing a couple of agreements, I get a 2nd or 3rd with contradictory information. I was ripped off, sold. Not happy. They came over to our new house and promised us a NEST thermostat and a panel upgrade. That gets you into proposal mode. Then they pulled out of the promise of NEST thermostat and then, out of the promise of the panel upgrade. Took them a year to get our solar panels up and running ~ they repeatedly blamed The City of Burbank for all their failures to move the process along ~ but this only happened after we told them we were contacting home office and proved that it wasn't The City of Burbank's fault. 2. For all our trouble, waiting and checking up on them SolarCity's Michelle Conde mconde@solarcity.com said she would have $100 mailed to us... we were sent $50.44 instead and she said she would "look into this" ~ it's already been a week with no reply. ...even their apology fails. 3. NOW, on October 7th, see the reply below, meanwhile, SolarCity has sent us an email saying our panels are not producing the promised power, that dirt might be obstructing them... they didn't even bother looking up if it had rained in our area... it just rained over the weekend... more of the same. Here's what The City of Burbank had to say about SolarCity blaming them for their failure to get the solar panels up and running: "Hello Jessica, I want to provide confirmation and congratulate you on your solar PV system having been interconnected to our grid on 7/21/2015. No further action with the utility is required from you or SolarCity. I am sorry to hear this process was so lengthy for you. Our records show that plans were first received by our Residential Service Planner on or around 9/19/2014. Within a week our Service Planner visited your home to spot the new meter and associated equipment for SolarCity to incorporate into their plans. Subsequent design review comments were issued by the various City Departments over a six month period. This seems excessive to me given the experience SolarCity has doing work in Burbank. Finally, the electrical permit was signed off by the Building Division on 6/30/2015 and the system turned on three week later by BWP Test Technicians. I don't believe BWP of the City stymied SolarCity's efforts to provide a solar PV system in a timely fashion. Additionally, we don't have record of SolarCity indicating as much. I hope this brief timeline of events is helpful. And as always, please feel free to reach out to us anytime with any concerns or comments." Here's part of what we sent to Mr. Lyndon R. They need to grant permission before you can start sending power to the grid. Some inspectors will contact you before they contact us--if so, please call us immediately." Two years ago my husband and I signed on with Solar City, excited for the opportunity to do something good for the environment. We were told our power bill would essentially go away, and that the bill we paid to Solar City would be a flat rate that, over a year, would pale in comparison to our DWP payment. We had never had had a particularly large electrical bill, but it seemed like a fine trade. What actually happened has been a very different story than what we were told to expect. Our DWP bill has remained the same, and we now pay $65 a month to Solar City on top of it. So, instead of saving us money, our arrangement has ended up costing us an extra $100 per DWP billing cycle. Either something isn't right, or this is the worst deal on the planet. Neither the DWP nor Solar City will accept responsibility, let alone acknowledge there is a problem. So we are caught bouncing back and forth between them. We've left many messages on the DWP's special solar phone line, but have never reached a person. The DWP's regular operators tell us that we don't understand how Solar works or that Solar City ripped us off. They repeatedly refuse to even look at the system (though we've been told by multiple people with solar that initially the DWP failed to actually connect them). Solar City says we must be using more power than we did before, or that we need to trim a tree (the shadows from this tree are off the house by 6 am in the summer). I really don't see how we could possibly be using more power, considering we're the same family, doing the same things, and haven't introduced any new appliances that would use up the equivalent of a house full of power. The Solar City panels are not generating the amount of power specified in our contract with them, which I think could be a part of our problem (although, I think even generating half the expected power should result in some kind of discount on our DWP bill, which we have yet to see). Last spring, Solar City told us that they would not consider adjusting our 20-year lease until we'd had the system for two years and they did an internal review. Our system was installed two years ago this month. When my husband called last month to ask about the review, we were told it would just happen spontaneously. We're waiting. They then advised me that a contractor would call me within the next two hours before coming to take a look at it and getting it fixed. I called their 800# around 2pm and they gave me the same runaround..called again at 5pm ....SAME DAMN THING!! called again about 10mins ago and I explained the situation then he asks, "so what is your concern?!" It has been 10 months since we signed up for solar power and it is still not turned on. We signed up in December of 2014, it's now October 2015. We live in the City of Pasadena. Communication from Solar City has been unacceptably spotty, and we still don't have a timeline as to when this is supposed to be on. We never get a clear answer as to what is happening with the system, they did blame the city at first, but now it's taking so long they don't respond when we ask what's the holdup? Also, after reading upon carefully I saw the lease totaled $16k and the option to buy was an additional $16k. After a year we receive a bill from Edison for $1,633.92. We had no idea we were on an annual billing. Solar city never explained the facts. Our sales man sold us on an illusion of no electric bills. Our system only offsets 64% of our energy usage but we were told 84% and that we would pay a low rate for over usage, etc. our electric bills were only $4-$6 a month but now we find out that was just taxes. Our energy usage was $200-$500! So where are the savings? What does this system do? It makes money for SoCal Edison and Solar City. That's all. Solar city billing dept is a mess, their customer service people are pleasant but that's all. We chose their $500 deposit option to lock in lower rates and they charged us taxes on that? Why? You cannot get an answer until you give lots of information. They call you... I wanted to talk, because I am interested in solarizing my house. I was always suspicious of Solar City because they sit in our local Home Depot under a gigantic 2 acre roof and haven't "sold" their system to the Home Depot store. Why? I did finally talk to one of the reps and the minute he saw our house with the flat roof via Google he TURNED US DOWN. I signed a contract with Solar City and in July, they installed panels on my roof. The DWP took until Nov 1st to turn them on. (Not their fault.) However on Nov 3rd, the panels stopped functioning. They have had a number of service people out, and time and time again, they state that it's the inverter and they are "working on it" Nothing happens for a week or two, until I call again. Then I get a new appointment, with the same tech, who again confirms that it's the inverter, but boy oh boy, he can't fix it right now. "I'll be back" he states. And I hear NOTHING until I call again. It has now been 3 MONTHS. I have been paying to lease panels that were not functioning from the day they were installed. Every time I call, I get the run around, and comments about my contract. It's not that the panels are under performing. THEY ARE NOT FUNCTIONING AT ALL, AND HAVE NOT SINCE THEY WERE INSTALLED. I am beyond furious that I have now thrown away $170 for NOTHING. and though every service customer person I talk to says "We really want to get this resolved" I have seen absolutely no indication that this statement is true. I wished I thought to read these reviews prior to signing up. Nothing but delays and miscommunication within SolarCity. I had based my decision to use SolarCity based on a friends experience. His project flew through, no delays. I think I have all of the things that could have gone wrong with his install and my combined. I signed up October 1st, 2015 and still waiting. I have had people show up to the house unannounced and make demands of my disabled wife to keep the dogs in the house, open the gate and to move my truck and trailer. It's now the end of March 2016 and I am being told that this the average time. I am estimating that I have another 2 ~ 3 months before I can turn it on. I have emailed the CEO Lyndon Rive (lrive@solarcity.com) and the VP of Customer Operations (bmerkley@solarcity.com) regarding all the delays. No reply. Extremely poor communication and customer service. I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and Los Angeles County Department of Consumer and Business Affairs. I was told to expect 2 to 3 months for install and turn on and was told nothing about the Acceptance to SolarFund process. In my mind this is deceitful business practices. At this point I want the solar panels off my roof. I'm done. No one has ever offered any type of compensation for the lies and deceitful business practices. I'm tired of the I apologize and I'll look into it. Just take the panels off. One thing to know. YOU PAY for the electricity to generate. Even if you don't use it. I was extremely impressed with his knowledge, passion and dedication to making sure the job is done correctly from start to finish. Company is purely in the business of making money. Although the idea of going solar to save money is good where you are helping the environment and not needing to upfront the money to get it installed sounds like a good dream. Let's face it, it's a good dream because you'll end up forking out more money than you should have. Let's start with the initial contact (Home Depot). They'll get your information and all and setup an appointment with you. Then during their visit, they will review your bills and bring out this information about how your electric company rates have been going through the roof and more increases are coming. They will collect your information and without asking for your permission they'll run a credit check on you. After it's already done and all, they'll let you know that you are qualified or not. Hmmm.. Wish I knew they were going to run a hard credit pull first. But it's too late for that now. They will continuously stress how Edison rates are going to increase a lot soon. Scare tactics? Perhaps, but seriously? They haven't in the past but to be fair, there are increases coming and it's pushing me more towards purchasing a system not leasing one. If you want information on how the rates are proceed to read this... otherwise skip this paragraph. For me, I use Edison and they have a 4 tier system. Tier 1 (13 cents), Tier 2 (16 cents), Tier 3 (27 cents), Tier 4 (31 cents)... These numbers will vary depending on where you live as well. For the average users, they will be within Tier 1-2. If you have discounts such as CARE 30% off or FERA (tier 3 at tier 2 pricing), the pricing is will be lower. Your electric company allocates a certain amount of kW per month to you for each tier based on the season, summer gets more allocations. If my research is correct, historically SCE rates have gone through the roof.. oops, I meant gone up from 13 cents to 13.2 cents (tier 1), 15 cents to 16 cents (tier 2), 19 cents to 27 cents (tier 3), and 23 cents to 30 cents (tier 4). OMG! These rate increases are outrageous. How can they do this??? But... this is the rates from 2001 to 2014. Ranging from 2% to 28% over the course of the 10+ years period... Now how bad is that??? Many people probably forgotten to look at the historical figures and listen to the sales pitch. SolarCity have various plans and the plan they will advocate is one that rises at 2.9%. Let's say they will try to offer you 18 cents per kW which sounds like a good idea because the Tier 1 & 2 you will buy from Edison while Tier 3 and above you buy from them... Honestly, this will probably save you money if you are really a Tier 3 and Tier 4 user. But you will need to make sure you don't overproduce power since the savings gets negated. You only want to produce the energy that is enough to cover Tier 3+4. For CARE or FERA, most likely you won't save any money at all. Will I be going solar? Very likely since summer push me to Tier 3+4 and the pending increase from Edison for this coming year or 2 is going to be quite substantial. There's a reason for that so I'll let you do your own research to find out why. Will I go with SolarCity? Maybe, but they will definitely need to bring their pricing down for their price per kW they are trying charge me. I can't see why anyone would want to pay over $16000+ over 20 years period for a 2kW system when I can probably buy a 1.5kW for less than $6000 before tax credits or a 3kW system for $11000 before tax credits. There's a 30% tax credit for those who buy the system. In addition, you might also qualify for other rebates... The information and scenario is reflective of my situation and may not apply to you or anyone else. So do your own research before you commit. Once you sign that dotted line, they got you for 20 years! read more

Dear Katie L. of SolarCity I think you are misleading readers saying the MPU was the reason of the surcharges: May I remind you that my contract claimed MPU (main panel upgrades) was supposed to be "free of charge"? Instead, on the last papers sent for me to sign, I realized there were close to $9000 in hidden/additional costs. In my case, that in itself blew any of the promised "savings". That is something I would have loved to be told, rather than finding out while reviewing the last documents I was supposed to sign. Honestly, hidden costs AND the fact that SolarCity employees and regional managers are unresponsive, misleading, rude and condescending once I started asking questions is what this review is all about. Should I have not read/found those extra charges, I probably would have signed the contract and now I would be fighting your lawyers in court instead. So let this be a warning to any potential customers evaluating your services, and nothing else. I hope your duties as a SolarCity employee empower you to seek solutions based on what your customers post here in yelp, rather than minimizing and deferring the blame back to the once "potential" or even the unhappy customers. read more

Don't bother wasting your time with them. I normally do not post on Yelp! But after what just happened with their sales consultant I felt compelled to help others avoid the same experience. After setting an appointment at Home Depot, the consultant shows up, talks to me for 15 minutes about personal stuff and then leaves when he learns my wife is not present. It was stunning. When I asked him to sit down and chat, he got up, gave me his card and started to leave. When I questioned him, He actually had the nerve to say, "I'm trying to be professional with you." Huh??? I feel like I did once during one of those high pressure time share presentations where they won't talk to one of you unless both are present. I wanted to ask him if that is their policy or if he was just planning to drive the company bankrupt on his own. They won't be in business long treating people like this, that's for sure. After my experience, I came on yelp and was at least gratified to see that the owner comes on here to see what people are saying. My advice is to stop teaching your sales people to use Neanderthal strategies and instead just treat people as fellow professionals. My experience was so stunningly bad I could barely respond. SolarCity, absolutely the worst decision I ever made. The system is completely underperforming. Possibly causing damage to my roof. The sales representative that sold me the project mislead some of the information. One of my salesman was fired from SolarCity and is very disgruntled with the company and has nothing good to say about them. SolarCity tells me they will review my system after 2 years and refund me any money for the underperformance. I am shocked and do not know what to do. We had our solar panels installed AUgust 2014; but they did not work till October 2014; our rep Laird Sanders miscalculated the capacity required so the solar panels do not produce enough ; its about 500kwh less that our requirement; despite informing our Rep Laird Sanders in October 2014 that he needs to add capacity; he has replied only once in Nov 2014 and has not done anything till now July 2015; We therefore end up having two utility bills; the company may be good but their customer service sucks; once you sign on the dotted line you are at their mercy; despite call their customer service regularly to fix the issue; nothing has been done; SO BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU SIGN UP WITH THEM MAKE SURE YOU ASK IF THE CAPACITY OF THE SOLAR PANELS ARE ENOUGH FOR YOUR NEEDS BASED ON YOUR AVERAGE UTILITY BILLS; read more

I have been with Solar City for a little under a year now. It started with a conversation with a great guy in my local Home Depot store who stayed with me during the entire process. (His name is Frank Wagner). Going solar is not simple, but Solar City takes a lot of the complexity out of the process. Even signing documents is simple (using electronic signature process). Their installation team was very professional and efficient. They were on-time and the work was top notch. These are not fly-by-night people. To help clarify a few things about how the process works... 1) sign agreement with Solar City (we went with a lease with no money out of pocket) 2) get necessary approvals from power company - this can take a few weeks, but Frank was always in touch 3) once approved, the equipment is installed. Again, this was an easy process, even though it required several visits to examine my roof and design a plan that was appropriate to my home. They go to great lengths to make sure you will not have any issues down the road. And under a lease program, they will cover any problems if they arise. 4) Now here was the frustrating part - My panels are installed and collecting energy, but they couldn't be "switched on", or connected to my house/the power grid until the power company said it was OK. They say it can take two to three months, but ours took longer. Thankfully we had constant updates from Solar City, and the power company ended-up giving us a credit for the period of time beyond the promised window. Now that everything is working, our TOTAL power costs are about 1/2 to 1/3 than before. If you go with a lease, you will get a bill from Solar City for the power that your panels generate each month (at a locked-in CHEAP rate, and you can track your panels' power generation every day with a cool app for your phone), but you will NOT get a bill from the power company. Keep in mind that if your panels do not cover all of the electricity you consume every month, you will continue to buy power from the power company (at the lowest "tier one" rate, by the way), but they will not automatically charge you the balance every month. It will accumulate - some months the balance goes up when my panels do not cover all of my power consumption, and sometimes it will decrease during months when I generate more than I consume. BUT BE AWARE THAT THE BALANCE MUST BE SETTLED AT THE END OF THE YEAR - a "true up" is what they call it. But even with the money I will eventually have to pay to the power company - I am WAY ahead compared to having no panels at all. Going solar was a no-brainer, and Solar City (and Frank) made it so easy. I just don't understand why anyone would NOT do it. Estimator had limited knowledge and gave me erroneous information. If I wanted someone who could answer questions specific to my property, I would need to sign a contract. NO THANK YOU!!! There are a lot of other companies that will provide information and better customer service without having to sign a contract. read more

I was told I would produce enough energy to cut my bill in half and be able to bank the overage for months that would not produce enough. I was contacted by solar city in November 2014 and decided to go with there system after going through all the information given to me in regards to there system,I was told that they would put a system on my home that would not only produce enough energy to more than cut my bill in half but that I would produce enough so I would be able to bank the overage to use when and if my system did not produce enough in less production months, and whatever was not used my electric company would purchase, after the system was up and running I discovered that it was in no way going to produce enough to even get close to 50% maybe if I was lucky 25%, I called and found that Michael Valencia was no longer employed there so I emailed the regional sales manager Dustin Mansell who pushed it off to Jan Clark who called and said she and Dustin would be looking into my complaint back in March since I have received 2 emails from Ms Clark 4/4 Hi Raymond, I still don't have an update for you..however, I am now emailing supervisors. I have checked the area as I told solar city and there are homes a quarter of the size of my home that have more than 10 panels most have 20 if not 30 panels on there roofs. I was also not told that a lien would be put on my home and recorded at my local registry of deeds! I just found this out do to refinancing. there customer service is horrible no return calls or updates by emails. Unlike reviewers who gush about the service I am not working for the company. The lead in process was tedious resembling getting a mortgage. The salesman did not know how many panels to install to get the result we wanted. We kept getting calls from corporate that didn't match wat the sales guy said. No where on any documents or sales process did they tell us that the billing would be through a random DBA so when they deducted from my bank account I reversed the charges. It took 3 calls to find out the name of their alias. Now I'm stuck for nearly 60 minutes on the phone waiting for a human to sort it out"caller number 115"! - They don't save you any money, I pay more! - Their customer service is not given any power to help you, honestly their jobs are pointless. - They didn't charge me the first month then double charged me the second month because "their departments weren't communicating." - Didn't get Refund as promised. - Charged me fees for not having automatic payments set up. - They call me super early in the morning everyday because I refuse to pay these tack on fees. - Holes all over the side of my house and roof without any energy savings! read more
