I ate here last week with a dining companion as I have many times before. The decor of the restaurant was what I would consider homely with brick walls and a fireplace upstairs. For dinner both myself and my dining companion decided on the bacon-bleu burger. I ordered my burger medium and it came to me at medium rare but still tasted pretty good. It was also nice to have the option of wet or dry blue cheese. For sides I had the cole slaw and my dining companion had the home fires. Neither was terribly inspiring although not too bad either. The bottom line for me that this is a decent place for a burger although it is far from the best burger in Pittsburgh as many claim. I am sure that I will be back in the future as their wait staff is always good and the food worth the price. read more

This is a classic Pittsburgh restaurant. The inside has a lot of history and character to it. The burgers are considered one the best in the area and I'd highly recommend ordering one. They are cooked true to temp so I get a medium well and it comes out with just a hint of pink the way I like it. The burgers come with home fries which are okay but not one of my personal favorites. This was my wife's first time here, my first in many, many years. Our burgers were excellent as were the chicken noodle soup, cole slaw, and potato salad. From the first bite, it was obvious that the meat used in the burgers is quality. There is a large menu that I was not expecting to see, which included seafood, pork, even a $40 filet mignon. The side dishes are small. Our server, Ben, was extraordinary: everything one would want: welcoming, friendly, efficient, attentive, charming, and funny. The only downside is the limited space in the restaurant, which causes the diners to be so close to each other that there can be no intimate conversation. There was an empty booth when we arrived. I requested it and the owner declined to place us there, leaving it for a larger party. The booth was empty for the entire time we were in the restaurant. This is not the kind of place you come for a million toppings. This is a straight up, non-fancy, large burger. It's not trendy, and it probably never will be. Otherwise, I came here and personally ordered a whiskey sour and a cheesesteak with coleslaw. The whiskey sour was spot on, and the alcohol content was spot on as well. The cheesesteak was great, not particularly traditional, but great nonetheless. The steak was tender and there was plenty of it. Lots of cheese. No complaints! My parents' meals were great too! Also a great place to go for thick cuts of steak, fish, chicken, etc. They have an in-house butcher, source the best stuff they can, and of course the wood-fire grill. One thing to note is that they really sear the meats, so if you're ordering red meat done medium-well or more, they'll occasionally be slightly on the drier side. Most of the time they nail the char/tenderness ratio but you can't expect anywhere to get it right 100% of the time. I recommend ordering meats with a sauce on top (e.g. bbq burger, chicken sandwich w/mayo, etc) to add some moisture for the perfect combo, but that's all personal preference. Tessaro's is my favorite burger spot in the city. The bacon blue burger is my normal choice, but I have been known to spring for the bbq burger; both are fantastic. I order my burger cooked med well at most places, but at Tessaro's I order it medium (oh it's so good to be bad). All of the ingredients used at Tessaro's are fresh and of superior quality. My favorite thing about the burgers here are that they arent soaked in grease, which is more than I can say for some other places in the city. Do I think that Tessaro's has reinvented the burger?
