Terrible Colring and Customer Service. Hair Dye was all over skin- face, temples, forehead, following a color. They didn't seem to know how to get it off, how to have prevented that by being careful and did not care. Expensive Service, is par for the course, and- usually a treat and luxury, not causing a client to be in tears and look like they did it themselves. I cheated on my stylist to come here because I was suffering from a case of brokeassness. Groupon came through for me in my time of need and gave me a serious discount (from what I would normally pay anyway) on a cut and color. I decided to use the day I was leaving town for a wedding to get my hair done, per usual--if I have an event, I hold the hair appointment off until right before--2 birds with one stone, I say. This place is about a quarter the size of my usual salon. Fine. But that also means it was super cramped. Le sigh. Not a very relaxing situation. My flight was 7ish and my appointment was at 2:30 PM. This should be plenty of time... It was not. This was the fault of the colorist. I was excited about the prospect of organic color. The process is different than usual, and there are lots of steps. Warp the hair, put it under the heat, take it out of the heat. I was told the timing for each step and left alone. Fantastic. So the colorist did her thing, and walked away at each step. She disappeared. The timer went off. She didn't come back until 10-20 mins after each step should be finished (which wasted more than 30 mins of my precious pre-flight time). At one point the stylist, Bill, noticed me looking around for her and took care of it himself. I was beyond livid. Bill cut my hair as the clock ran down. We went downstairs into a part of the hair salon which reminded me of my basement rec room in high school. He was funny, and sweet, and I loved him. He worked like a mad man to give me a style in the remaining 20-minute left before I lapsed into the zone of missed flights. He did not remotely accomplish the style I requested--was it a failure of articulation on my part? But he gave me giant newscaster hair in the allotted time period (which was not BAD, just not what I wanted), and I was grateful for his hustle. I tipped the man and GTFO. While Bill was fantastic, I just can't beat my regular stylist as far as cut goes. I loved my color (it's only been 4 washes since, so I can't tell you if it will last), but the colorist created a cascading series of events which caused me to just narrowly make my flight (and I mean running to the gate Home Alone-style). I am very disappointed with the service I received from this salon. I booked an appointment for a simple shampoo and blow-dry for my bachelorette party. The girl who gave me the blow-dry, Sacha, needs some serious client/stylist consulting manners and should probably lose the attitude. I have fine hair like some other people in the world, it's not that unusual. I understand it's not the greatest and easiest to work with, but I work with what I have and still manage to make it look good on my own. Being told repeatedly that my hair is "so thin" and "so flat" that there's nothing to do with it is not only unprofessional but it's down right rude. Excuse me but aren't you the person I am paying to temporarily fix my volume issues? Making a client feel self conscious and insecure on one of the most memorable days of her life is unacceptable. I needed a haircut and in general, I'm not horribly picky as long as I have a decent do that looks fairly up-to-date. There was a little bit of a wait before someone could wash my hair so I people watched. There were two employees responsible for washing hair, a gentleman and a woman. The woman seemed to a little pressed for time and slightly frazzled. Across from her was a lady cutting hair who was downright nasty to the woman washing hair - condescending, passive aggressive, and overall, inappropriate. What is completely reprehensible is that everyone went about their business like this was normal acceptable behaviour! I'm sorry but I've had my share of work place unfriendliness and really wonder if I want to sponsor a business that treats their employees like this. It made me sad....very sad. As for the haircut, it was perfectly fine. It seemed to me that most women were here for colour treatments (so maybe that's where their expertise is) but I actually like my natural colour. read more

Sandra is a talented stylist! It is so hard to find someone who knows how to handle my long, wavy, and chemically damaged Jew-fro-Latina hair. It really needs to be handled by a pro and Sandra did an amazing job giving my hair flattering shape and taking some of the weight out of it. It was also much easier to style for the next month or so. She didn't openly seem annoyed when I requested my hair be blown out which has happened to me in the past with previous stylists at other salons. I really enjoy getting my hair blown out and it was nice to actually get a blow out that held up for days. read more

Brilliant!!! I have always found it hard to find a good hair stylist when I move to a new city. I go to Lily for my color and Megan for my cut and style and the combination results in always a great haircut. This is a great salon with modern chic styles walking out the door and that includes me :-) The staff are all lovely and there is a mixture of American, Irish, French and Russian. I have been getting my hair cut by Sharon for over a year now, she is fantastic. She is a perfectionist and is excellent at what she does, with a great knack for understanding what it is you're asking for and giving you what you want. On the flip side, she isn't afraid to tell you not to do something if she doesn't think it will suit you - she won't give you a pixie cut just because it's fun for her and you asked for it. Plus she is fun and sassy and hip and does the awesome snipping at the ends of the hair for great texture. Price is reasonable for the quality of the cut. Parking is on the street and the gal at the desk will refill your meter for you. EDIT: Just found out the hard way that when you get colored, a blow dry isn't included. Maybe this is normal (I'm not a very big salon-er)? It's good to know though! read more

OK, so I went here for the first time this past weekend (on a Saturday) and I was extremely pleased with the experience. I found out about this place through Groupon - they offered a haircut, wash, and style for $30 bucks. Most places are over $30 just for a haircut, so I figured why not? They just assigned me to whoever was free, and that happened to be Bill. Well, Bill is who I will go back and see. He gave me a great cut, did a nice blow out, and he was easy to talk to. The salon was VERY packed that day, but he was able to get me to a sink relatively quickly, and other than that there was no wait. The only reason I am giving the salon 3 stars instead of 4 is because a) without a discount, the prices are expensive and b) I got a $15 parking ticket because the meters are only for one hour and I was in the salon for an hour and 20 minutes. The salon apparently has free parking in the back, but I couldn't find where it was, so that's not too helpful now is it? :( Overall, clean facility and talented crew. I'll be back! read more

I honestly hate changing stylists because I'm incredibly vain when it comes to my hair and once I find a stylist that understands me I don't let them go. Unfortunately, due to a job change, I lost my stylist and I had to search for a new one, which is a horrifying experience for me. However, I was advised to check out Tete a Tete and to ask for Bill. I have nothing but amazing things to say about the entire experience. Bill is amazing. Great personality and a good eye for what works and what doesn't. For me, Tete a Tete is all about Sacha Stanley. She is great with color (got the brassiness out when previous colorists insisted there was none) and has me on a much better path toward a sexy/pretty haircut. An organic hair color line (I'm not sure how that's possible, sort of like jumbo shrimp) is also now available, which is way less irritating and makes my hair shiny. I have been a client of Tete A Tete Salon for over 15 years. I have to admit, I have tried other Salons in the Boston area that friends recommend, however I always come running back to Tete A Tete! Every friend that I have referred to Tete A Tete have also stayed loyal clients. All of the staff from the salon owner, to the hair washers are so pleasant and truly artists. They all have their specialties. Sharron is the ONLY stylist that I will allow to trim my bangs. When I lived in NYC, I would travel home to have my hair cut by Sharron. Diego does a fabulous high bun and chic pony tail, and Bill is a blow out genius! With reasonable prices, a clean and comfortable atmosphere, and a very friendly staff, I always leave the Salon more than satisfied. I highly highly recommend this Salon, and I am an extremely picky Newton girl....especially when it comes to my hair! Don't get me wrong, I didn't have a bad experience at Tete a Tete- on the contrary, it was a very satisfactory experience. My hair was cut with precision and in the style I wanted, but it was not worth the price tag I paid for it. If I'm going to pay top dollar, I expect my cut to be AMAZING, not just good. Maybe I'm not used to Newton prices, but I used to pay $50 for an incredible cut in NYC, and I have yet to recreate that experience here in Mass. read more

The longest but also the BEST haircut I've ever gotten. The atmosphere is French but also kind of funky. My stylist was Diego who just kept on going and going. First he sprayed my hair down with product after it had been shampooed. Then he cut but not just "cut"...it was very intricate. He's the MOST meticulous stylist ever. He put more product in my hair and blow dried which was a process...then he flat ironed...then he "checked" the hair cut by going over it strand by strand. I have miles and miles of hair and most stylists get really impatient but he wanted to make sure he got it just right so finally, he shaped the cut by taking alot of the weight out. It was amazing. Oh man, my hair has been through a lot in my 30 years on the planet. It's been every color under the sun and then some. It's gone from black to blonde and back again. Honestly, I'm astonished that it hasn't fallen out. I have very fine hair, but oh man, there is a LOT of it. My old stylist Mari used to have to thin it out every 2-3 months. She was a miracle worker with my lion's mane and I was sad to see her go to the west coast. I'd bummed around from Salon to Salon, desperately seeking someone who wouldn't cut my hair short with clippers, or razor down my split ends. I ultimately gave up after spending thousands of my hard earned dollars on Newbury Street, because I felt like what I was getting was as good as I could do myself at home after a trip to Sally's. Then I found Bill. Bill is a godsend! I completely swear by the fact that a great haircut and/or color can change your life. Dead ends and split ends are GONE. He thinned it out marvelously, without the use of those godawful thinning shears. He took the time to listen to my long term hair needs/wants and was willing to work with me to get me the hair I love! I'm getting married in a year and I'm trying to grow out the mop, while going blonder from the Christina Hendrick's Red that I was currently sporting. He made it look like I was blonde from the get go with tons of red low lights, creating a stunning Strawberry blonde. He expertly layered my hair to get rid of all the dead and the weight without sacrificing the length. All the while chatting up a storm and making me laugh so hard I almost cried. He's a sweetheart and a champion of the sheers! He told me how much he LOVES to do men's haircuts too, so my fiance will be paying him a visit soon. I had a Groupon to Tete a Tete for a partial highlight and cut. I felt awful because I was 30 minutes later (stupid traffic!) & walked in right as the receptionist was calling me to cancel. Noelle was very friendly.. she rushed through the highlights (which was fine, because it was my fault for being late!).. applying two different colored highlights & a low light. We talked throughout & she gave me great hair tips & advice.. she was very friendly. I told her she could skip the blow-dry since she had another client coming in.. but she insisted I get a wash, gloss, then a cut and a blow-dry. She did a great cut, then blow-dried it & cut it again to take off some weight. It was the best blow-dry I've ever had at a salon! Rarely do hairdressers get it right.. Even though her client had arrived, she took her time to make sure it was perfect and I was VERY impressed. I will definitely be returning once I muster up the money to spend on a hair do! How have I not written a review for Tete a Tete yet?! Finding a new salon is one of the worst parts of moving (for me at least), so I tried Tete a Tete at the recommendation of a friend when I moved from CT a year and a half ago. I could not have been more thrilled. I have never gotten more compliments on my hair since I started going to Sandra here! I've been able to go a little blonder than I have in the past because the highlights are so natural and somehow manage to grow out without extreme roots. Though my haircut is pretty simple, I'm always very pleased with that result as well. Prices I think are pretty standard and well worth the quality of services here. I just got back from a haircut and eyebrow wax at Tete a Tete, and it was fantastic. Megan was my stylist, and she was fun and very thorough. She sat me down before the shampoo and interviewed me about the products I use, where I got it cut last, how I like to wear it, etc. A very thorough shampooing, very precise layering...she took her time and did an amazing job! Not a single hair out of place, and she gave my long fine hair a lot of volume and movement...it looks much fuller now. Another lady waxed my eyebrows. Again, she took her time but they have never looked better. Which is great because at $25 I expect a good brow wax! I left there witha spring in my step. I will definitely go back. i love this place and every time i go in, it feels like visiting family. in fact, even throughout my collegiate experience (in PA) and after my relocation to NYC, I still refuse to let anyone but Diego cut my hair. in addition, Tanya has been styling my Mother for about 7 years--through some serious hair challenges--and let me tell you..miracle worker. every stylist at other salons has cut my hair regardless of what i've asked for. DIEGO HAS NEVER FAILED ME. I never think I do a particularly good job of explaining what is I want, and yet at the end of a hair cut it always comes out exactly as I envisioned it. The man is a genius and understands trends, face-shapes, method, etc. The compliments I receive afterwards are endless--and Diego is 100% to thank. my experience at Tete a tete has always been amazing--and i've never witnessed a customer leaving anything less than beautiful and satisfied. i don't do five stars for anything or anyone unless its the BEST. and tete a tete is truly nothing less. read more

Visited for the first time today and after reading the reviews was wary getting attitude from the receptionist, being pushed to buy products and arguments about discounts, but on the contrary had a very pleasant and smooth experience.
