For portions they serve you it justifies the price in my opinion (-$47). You're getting two plates basically for the price. I've never had to jump through so many hoops just to pick up food. I placed an online order and was told it would be ready in 45 minutes. I arrived after 45min, only to find two lines outside and TWO top flight security guards managing the process. Before even getting in, I had to show my order confirmation, the card I paid with, and my ID. WTF? After waiting about 15 minutes outside in the sun, I was let in... to stand in another line for ANOTHER 15 minutes! I had a taste for the curry chicken for months now but trying to make it on the days that it's served (because it's not served daily), just hasn't worked out. Anyway, I finally make it back yesterday and wow was I disappointed. I ordered two separate plates: curry chicken and jerk chicken. The containers they use now are significantly smaller than the old ones and the portions are way smaller. Paying $30 for a plate didn't used to bother me because I'd be able to eat off it 3 times. I've had oxtail once in my 45 years of life. And I eat soul food I cook soul food. I've just never been an oxtail person. My son wanted to try the oxtails. So he ordered the oxtail plate and I ordered the short rib plate. needless to say, we couldn't tell the difference between the two plates so I began digging in to his oxtails. Now.. no lies told.. the oxtails were fire. Definitely not how I had tasted oxtails before where they had an aftertaste. Not these. I didn't realize I was eating his plate until we opened up the short rib plate and there was the obvious short rib bone in it . Unless I will say both taste it like they were smothered in the same gravy.. which we didn't mind at all both protein, tender and really good. Oxtail eaters. There's a typical fat on them and lots of little bones. Short ribs, I had a couple of tough pieces that were more like cartilage than meat. That upset me because they definitely don't give you a lot of short rib and oxtail. Contrast to the chicken where they give you a lot. I'd say you might get a tablespoon of and a half of oxtail short rib. And the plate is drenched in gravy. Would be amazing if I had more meat. The sides : When you get your plate, you're gonna be impressed just feeling it because it's heavy. That makes initially feel like OK may be paying over $30 for this was worth it. But when you start noticing things like there isn't a lot of protein unless it's chicken... now you're starting to pick apart everything a little more.. The true star of the show here , hands-down, the mac & cheese. It's not overly complicated, it's creamy, noodles cooked perfect, and you even get some of the stick to the pan parts which I love. In my opinion, this is really what you're coming for if you're coming here. The cabbage is boiled . And actually, I liked it because it wasn't oily, you can taste the fresh peppers in it, it wasn't crunchy. It was cooked well. The rice and peas lack luster. And I only really say this because it's hidden under your protein. they give you so much that's what's weighing down your plate. It's really hard taste the flavor of the rice and peas, which is the true staple of a Jamaican dish, not mac & cheese. The kool-Aid.. One thing my community knows how to do, and better do right, is make some Kool-Aid. Sorry not sorry. And they definitely made that Kool-Aid right . Delicious, FLAVORFUL soul food with a Jamaican persuasion. I love Tev's Kitchen! While researching for an event, I came across Tev's in Eater LA's latest 38 Best Restaurants in Los Angeles list and was surprised I hadn't heard of it. Southern California boasts some of the most diverse and best representations of food from all over the world... but I'd be lying if I said we had the Caribbean cuisine down like the foods of Latin America and Asia. For West Indian flavors, the Inglewood, South Central, and Compton triangle has all that on lock and now you can add Tev's Kitchen on the list. On a cloudy Good Friday, I head up the 110 and drive toward Leimert Park and see Tev's distinctive red building popping out under the grey skies. Although I was reading the lines could be hours long, around 2 pm on Friday afternoon there were only about 8 people in line... 9 if you count Chef Tevin Love himself rolling a crate full of groceries through the front door. It was about a 30 minute wait between getting in line outside and arriving at the ordering window, but they made sure to pass around the daily menu while you waited. Besides Salmon, Ribeye Steak Strips, Jumbo Tenders, and Lamb Chops, they have a rotating list of dishes that changes at least a few times a week, as well as off the menu specials. I decided to get the Fried Catfish and an order of their famous Sweet Chili Sauce Wings so I can give Tev's Kitchen a proper assessment for my first time. The kind young lady taking my order not only gave me recommendations on what sides to get (Cabbage over Broccoli, Garlic Mashed Potatoes over Rice), but even helped me save a couple bucks by creating a special combo for me: instead of the Fried Catfish meal ($28) she helped me order a Sweet Chili Wings (off the menu special of the day) for $25 and a piece of Fried Catfish ($8) on the side. Now I love saving money as much as I love good food, so that's a Win for me right there. From ordering to the food being ready, it was about another 30 minutes, but the time passed quickly as they played classics by Jimi Hendrix and Dandy Livingstone in the living room. When the food was good for pick up, they also give you a cup of iced Kool-Aid, which is amazing. Fruit Punch is my favorite so I was pleased to see the glistening ruby red drank. I've eaten at Dulan's for years and let me tell you: the sides here are way more flavorful than Dulan's! In addition to my Cabbage and Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Macaroni & Cheese is part of each order and Tev's is BANGIN'. As to be expected, the Sweet Chili Wings were treacly sweet but good... the Catfish was perfectly fried and the lemon garlic butter sauce they served paired perfectly with it. Will definitely need to come back on the weekends for the more distinctly Jamaican dishes like oxtails and jerk chicken, but my first time at Tev's Kitchen definitely has me wanting MORE. I'll try to keep this quick. The food is excellent. I've been a couple of times and sampled most of their menu and I can't say anything bad about it. Oxtails, jerk chicken, wings, the sides and the beverages are fantastic. At the average of $25 - 35 per plate, they do give good portions that can last a day or two if you can't finish it in one sitting. However, there is a VERY BIG NEGATIVE and that's the security and the service. I understand that their location might not be in the best neighborhood, but they tend to treat the customers like criminals. If you place an order online for pickup, when you arrive you must show your photo ID and the credit card you ordered with. If you don't have those, you're pretty much out of luck. Say you're picking up an order for an office or a party and you don't have the card on hand, they won't release the food. This is one of the worst policies I've ever seen in my life. I refuse to believe that someone will randomly show up at this restaurant knowing exactly what's in an order and give the name of who placed the order all for the sake of stealing a plate of food. I've come to the conconclusion that when he arrives for food reviews they automatically load up his plate on purpose. I tried the lamb plate with double mac and it was an additional $7 for extra mac. The order was over $50. The food was hot upon delivery and the wait time was 20 minutes. I however, was disappointed in the lamb portions and size of meat cuts. The lamb pieces were extremely small (4) pieces per order. The lamb was extremely thin and not tinder to bite. The flavor was good, but the portion and cut size of the lamb was unacceptable in my honest opinion. I wasn't expecting Ruth Chris or Eddie V cuts, but atleast if you are going to use those cuts of lamb include at least (6) per order. I understand lamb can and is expensive and food cost are higher these days. I think the intent is good, but better excution is needed. In my opinion I would consider a decent plate with (6) lamb of a decent cut or if you continue to serve (4) use better thicker tender cuts of meat. I also expect lamb to be tinder also. This however comes with skill and execution of the chef. The mac was plentiful and flavorful. It was however a little greasy which isn't a fault. The cabbage was good but could use more seasoning in my opinion. I love supporting black businesses and will more than likely spend whatever the cost, but I may never come back. The location is in a sketchy area of town near 48th and Gramercy.I grew up on Arlington and Jefferson, so this isn't a fault or jab at the location. The macaroni and cheese is top tier! Probably the best I've had from a Jamaican eatery. Overall the food is good and you get nice portions. However the wait will prevent me from returning, unfortunately. I arrived relatively early and still had to wait 1 hour just to order. Then another 1.5 hours to get my ordered food. I can't lose another 2.5 hours just for an order. This is the norm. Oxtail is $38. A combo (for example curry chicken and oxtail) is $47.
