First order, first impression. I wanted to order through DoorDash, but it said SSLA was closed. I called and explained to the gentleman that answered the phone that I wanted to place my first order, but the DoorDash app stated that they were closed. He was very friendly and told me to wait until 1:00 p.m. to place my order and offered to include a free punch with my order, which I did not receive, not a big deal because I did not pay for it. But, you should honor your word. At 1:00 p.m. I ordered the Soul Bowl with Red Beans and Rice, and Greens. I also ordered the three piece catfish. The catfish was a little too salty for my taste. I enjoyed the Soul Bowl, except for the yams. I don't usually eat anyone's yams because of the strings in the yams, these were no different, they had strings, so I had to pick around them to ensure that I didn't eat the strings, for some reason they have always made me want to throw up. Other than the strings, the yams were good. The greens, red beans and rice, and Mac and Cheese were delicious. I'm glad I ordered two muffins because they are delicious, I wish I had ordered more. First of all order ahead of time if possible. This was an interesting spot with variety of restaurants. All of them busy with customers. Check them out! Southern Soul La is not fast food and is take out only! We waited an hour 'cause we didn't know. This was my first experience with this establishment and I was not disappointed. As someone stated before order online or you're going be waiting a while. Is it worth the wait, every fiber of my being would tell you yes. I got the turkey chops, they were delicious crispy moist on the inside. Seasoned and fried to golden perfection. You're going be saying pork chop whooo! The yams they were so good not mushy they still had texture to them. What's better in life than tasting yams and mac on the same fork. It's like sweet and savory all at once. The Mac and cheese was good cheesy flavor obviously. I wouldn't slap my momma for it but my first cousin for sure! The greens I expect to see more turkey in them but withstanding that I loved them they were tender and still vibrant and the flavors from the meat permeated through those greens. The rice they make has flavor it's flaky Shelly rice but I could be wrong it gives me like those parboiled rice box mix rice you can get at the supermarket. If I'm wrong and it's made from scratch they do an awesome job if not it's still good rice. The cornbread muffin are glazed little buns that I did enjoy. The customer service was good even though they were busy and had nuff ppl standing out in the hallway. The lady still came out without being asked and checked with customers about their orders. I've been here a few times and can also vouch for the Fried Chicken and Candied Yams. Most recently I ordered: the Salmon Bites plate, sides were Greens w/Smoked Turkey & Mac and Cheese, & it's comes with a very flavorful rice & a cornbread muffin. Salmon bites were NOT dry, just fried perfectly and seasoned well. The greens were so good, even the stems did not bother me because they were tender. Mac and cheese is really good in my opinion and the rice and cornbread just round it out well. After a terrible experience at another soul food restaurant nearby, Southern Soul LA completely restored my faith in great customer service. I called just before closing, expecting to hear they were out of most things. Instead, the gentleman who answered the phone took his time to check what was still available instead of rushing me off the phone. I told him I was driving from a distance, and he genuinely cared enough to make sure the trip would be worth it. When I arrived, not only did they have my wings and almost every side I wanted, but they even surprised me by adding greens after telling me they were out. On top of that, they threw in a Kool-Aid. Those little gestures speak volumes. This is what hospitality is supposed to look like. They treated me like a valued customer instead of an inconvenience. Great food, excellent service, and people who clearly care about the customer experience. Southern Soul LA earned a new loyal customer tonight. Rundown: Location: it's a ghost kitchen with multiple businesses operating there. The buzzers are labeled by space number and business name. Just buzz them and they'll buzz you in. Just walk to their door number. Parking: 2 parking spaces infront of the building for to-go orders. There was a driveway on the right side of the building leading to the back. I'm not sure how many spaces available there since I snagged one in the front. Order process: just ordered on their website. Nice and easy website. No problems here. Food: yummy. I ordered the Whole Fried Chicken Wings plate. It came with 4 Whole chicken wings, your choice of 2 sides (I got mac & cheese and collard greens), served over Dirty rice and 1 cornbread. I ordered an extra cornbread on the side. All of the food was so flavorful and I loved that their mac noodles was not overcooked. I love the fact that the food not only smelled and tasted great, but the presentation of the food looked so well put together. Cost/Value: the combo plate was $25 before taxes, and the side of cornbread was $1. It was so worth it. That plate was fully loaded and heavy. Pickup/packaging: this is a pet peeve of mine picking up orders everywhere but they were on point here. They have a cart at their suite/doorway. I just walked up and was able to grab my order. I love the fact that their bags are able to handle the weight and size of their food. Also, the utensils were heavy duty weight so it was able to handle cutting into my wings. I really hate when food places go cheap on the utensils and break because their food is on the heavier side and need more sturdy utensils. Sorry, 2 stars is what it was.. I ordered the turkey chops, cabbage and macaroni &cheese. Also, the fried shrimp with fast lane(?) sauce. The turkey chops were fried, but not really seasoned. Maybe the grease was old, but they didn't taste fresh. Turkey chops are on the drier side, so some gravy would be nice. They were served over some sort of rice that didn't add much to the meal- just dry and kind of hard. Macaroni was a disappointment. It looked good, but the noodles were overcooked. Macaroni and cheese should be seasoned, and this was just very bland, maybe it was the cheese that was used that didn't have much flavor. The cabbage was also way overcooked and mushy. I know some people prefer their cabbage really cooked down, I prefer mine to have a little more texture. But the saving grace was the fried shrimp with the fast sauce. The shrimp were large, fried perfectly, and the sauce was balanced- sweet and spicy. Probably won't try it again which was disappointing. read more

The prices may be a lil more than what u may want to spend but it was well worth it. The catfish plate was seasoned very well and the crunch was definitely there.
