6/4/25 It's literally a hole in the wall, located right next to the infamous (and haunted) Hotel Cecil where serial killer, Richard Ramirez stayed in the 80's. My apologies for the morbid extra detail but it bears mentioning. Hubby loves Gumbo Boys' gumbo w/ chicken & shrimp with a side of steamed rice. He ordered the jumbo size (If you ask me, this is the smallest Jumbo ever seen!) and I ordered the fried catfish poboy. What is pictured/posted, the facade of the establishment is what it is. It's where you order, & about 4 seats, a counter next to the order counter that you may dine to enjoy your food. There are 2 red tables at the front of the shop with 4 chairs each. There is no indoor dining at all. Gotta admit, the food is great! The gravy on the gumbo was tasty & flavorful, just the right amount of seasoning, about 5 or 6 jumbo shrimp, tender cuts of chicken, andouille sausage. The cornbread? Meh, skip that, nothing special. Parking is horrendously limited unless you park & pay next door. A few orders are walk up & eat, but mostly to-go and a majority is delivery (DoorDash, Ubereats, Postmates, Grubhub). Oh my, the catfish poboy was phenomenal, perfectly fried fish and the lettuce & tomatoes were fresh. If you don't mind getting accosted by some vagrants while ordering/dining, you'll be fine. I ordered online, and this food was bussin! As a native Louisianian, I rarely trust cajun spots here in LA, especially those that have "gumbo," but the name "gumbo boys" was so bold, I had to try. I loved everything! The gumbo was delicious, and the sausages were perfect! The cornbread was on point! The eggroll with the red beans n rice dipped in the remoulade sauce went CRAZY! I wasn't expecting it to be so flavorful, but it was definitely a party in my mouth! I can't comment on the service or ambiance of the restaurant because I ordered takeout, but I will say this, everything was packaged neatly and arrived hot! I have no complaints! I ordered the Cajun egg rolls, says they are filled with red beans and rice, sausage and cheese, but mine were filled with only beans, rice and cheese, could be fried crispier. Also got the Chicken and sausage gumbo, which I really liked, meat (chicken and sausage, chicken was smoky, sausage was coarse ground which I love) and flavor were great, just very oily. Also got the red beans and rice, I did unfortunately bite into a few kinda hard beans, and the rice itself, wasn't cooked evenly, some bites were fine, others were filled with chewy/hard grains. This is strictly for the Cajun egg roll. Looking for a snack not a meal try the Cajun eggroll. This is what brought me here. Made fresh to order. A large egg roll filled with rice and red beans, cheese and sausage. Served with a tasty remoulade sauce to dip it in. Fried just right that gives you that crunchy 1st bite. Even though the eggroll brought me here there are plenty of other great items to choose from the menu. I will make my way back one day. I would suggest calling your order in. Some of the best gumbo I've had in LA! Various portion sizes to choose from and plenty of shrimp, chicken and sausage in my serving. Comes Roth crackers. Fish poboy was fully dressed. This too was enjoyable but could have had a bit more meat. The server was friendly, brought us our food (we sat at one of the two tables in the front). This is primarily a to-go restaurant. People I chatted with ordered in advance and came to pick up their orders. It's a cute facade but NO ambience. Downtown LA is not clean and the homeless population is in this area. Lost a star due to location. I located street parking and my sister paid $10 for the lot next to the restaurant. My friend and I came here after a few drinks at a bar up the street, we've always wanted to try! Will definitely be back. The catfish and shrimp were battered and fried to perfection. They came with a side of house sauce and hot sauce which complimented both perfectly! I enjoy by fries not too crunchy (I want to taste the soft potato inside) and they made them just how I like them. They weren't overly seasoned or salty! The hush puppies were SCRUMPTIOUS. My partners and I went here for lunch recently. The murals on the stall are so cute and the person at the counter was very patient as we decided on all the things we wanted. We ordered so many things so we could try it all! The only thing that missed the mark was the cornbread. Everything else was good to great. My boyfriend was pleased with the fried catfish - one of his favorites from someone who grew up in Southern Louisiana. My partner got the blue crab po boy. It was tender and flavorful with great bread. Both the red beans and rice and the gumbo had so much protein - tons of sausage in both and a lot of chicken in the gumbo. A great value. Worst take-out experience ever. I arrived to pick up my DoorDash order, only to find out they couldn't find the order even though it stated the order was ready for pickup. After showing them my order and items, they finally scrambled to prepare it. When I got home, I realized they forgot the gumbo entirely. I had to make a second trip back, and the staff seemed completely clueless about the situation, even though I was just there less than 10min ago (It seemed as if the staff was under the influence). To top it off, when I finally got the gumbo, it was the wrong one, and one of the catfish pieces was half-cooked. Overall, a disappointing experience from start to finish. I've been enjoying Gumbo Boys ever since they sold food on a humble table on the sidewalk off 6th or 7th streets. This was about 3+ years ago. Now they have a whole store front! I was sad when the table setup disappeared off 6th street. Never knew what happened to the Gumbo Boys.... and long and behold I search for cajun food on Yelp today and find out that they opened a whole store front!! Wow!! The food was really superb back then so I was curious to see how it measures up now that they have a dedicated restaurant with a kitchen. I ordered the seafood gumbo and the red beans. Both were amazing!!! Just how I remembered it from back in the day when they sold both items on a very humble table off the street. I noticed that the Jambalaya is missing on the menu!!! I totally suggest that Gumbo Boys bring it back!! It was amazing also. Same fellow cooking and serving the food! There is no beating around the bush.... the restaurant is not in the best area of town. People from out of town or first timers in the area should most definitely exercise caution after the sun goes down. Ordered the Cajun egg roll and the alligator po boy The eggroll was good and cheesy. Size was a little small for the price($5) imo Was really disappointed with the alligator. I haven't had it before so I ordered it because on the menu said tenderized but it was super chewy. I'm not sure why someone would want to sell chewy meat.. skip and get something else... I ordered ahead and it took about 15 min so not too bad. I would not recommend ordering at the window because you'll just be waiting outside since there is no indoor area. Overall I spent $21. What an amazing little Gem in DTLA. Food was on point even my 10 yr old was in love. I graduated from LSU so I lived in Louisiana for years. This is the most authentic food you will find outside of the bayou. I live in Montana now and watched a YouTube video of AD trying it and knew we had to make the trip. Well worth it!! Okay, so I'm from Texas. The cousin state to Louisiana, and this place is not a Cajun place like either state. The food is better than a lot of places here, BUT nah. Not even close. The shrimp are a good size and fried well, but super salty. The fried okra was like dried out? No okra in it. Just fried pieces. The gumbo, OMG, was like gravy. Legit tasted like brown gravy. I do want to try the beignets though, but I won't expect much. And I don't understand why they are open until 9, if they don't want to serve people after 8. Most of the items are sold out anyway. There are 2 cafe tables outside and the neighborhood has a substantial number of unhoused transient folks. This in no way diminished from the quality of the food. I feared I couldn't eat there because the menu seems heavily laced with shrimp (an allergy food for me) and has some pretty spiced sausage. Also there is no chicken on the menu. I have had the po boy sandwiches. Catfish is my go-to favorite. I also always get red beans and rice and some fried okra. I don't cook this way at home, so having fried fish is a rare treat for me. I've also had the sausage po boy. Make sure to get a corn muffin with your meal! BREAD PUDDING is also a rare treat that you don't see served up in too many places these days. It's made by the sister of the GUMBO BOYS. Oh, and by the way, the owners actually do work there. I have eaten outside after work and have taken it home. I've even brought it back to the office to share with friends at work. Parking is not easy there so you might want to go with someone if you're driving. The food is ordered at a window and then it is brought outside. Please tip them well. Establishments like this need to stay in business.
