Although the billboard I saw for this restaurant seemed inviting, the food was subpar. It is an old place and they don't have the quickest service. The cafeteria style is not the best because you have to pay for each item. For example, you would have to pay 5.75 for the entree and an additional 2.25 per side plus thirty cents more if you want a roll. The rolls were very dense and unenjoyable. The crackers were also stale. I didn't try anything off the menu, but I am not sure I will be back to try it again. :/ read more

Unlike many of the reviews I've read my wife and I had a contrasting opinion and experience. Our waitress was pleasant and timely, she engaged us with personal conversation and made sure we had everything we needed. We were both overwhelmed with the amount of food for the price. My breakfast included 2 eggs, 3 strips of bacon, hash browns, 2 biscuits w/ gravy. It was served on 2 plates as one lg serving plate wasn't big enough and it only cost $6! No, it's not the best food in the world, but it is a good solid breakfast for very little money. read more

Food is average. Food on the buffet is made from yesterday's leftovers. The last time I was in there the waitresses were so rude to me and for some reason were badmouthing me??? The waitresses are old hags, with small town mentality, but when you get paid $2.25 an hour, you get what you pay for. Have eaten here for years off and on with my husband. Used to be open 24/7. The food here is poorly prepared. The biscuits are doughy and the gravy is pasty. The prices are high for the food served and the service is not adequate. The manager is unfriendly and unprofessional. When my food was not completely cooked, the manager said to take it or leave it. Paying for undercooked biscuits is just plain wrong. The biscuits don't seem to be fresh, I think they are frozen and get heated a bit and served. I suggest any other place in town. read more

New to Bastrop, so we have been trying out new places. Mother in law came to town so we went to Maxines because we have been there before and know how good it is. Well, maxines was closed, so we decided to try out this restaraunt. The iced tea was not fresh or good at all. I normally drink 3 or more glasses, but only managed to get half of one glass down. I noted before I ordered that everthing was overpriced, but I just assumed the portions would be huge. I couldn't have been more wrong. I ordered the beef burger for almost 7 dollars....fries cost extra also.... This 7 dollar burger was crap, smaller than a McDonalds quarter pounder, and the bread was terrible. Cheap buns squished and broke easily. I was pissed. My wifes BLT was just as disappointing, and my mother in law's chicken salad sandwich was bad too. I have seen better food cooked / prepared on the beach, or some camping trips. To top it off, paying at the register was just as bad as the food. What an old angry b!tch working up there. She was pissed off at me and the world. And I didn't do or say anything wrong! Never coming back for lunch or dinner.... I have to agree with the other reviewers. This place is a smoke pit. I have lived in Bastrop for five years and have braved going here twice. It's just aweful with the smoke..Food's actually "okay" if you can taste it without the smoke flavoring :-( I am so hoping Texas passes the state wide smoking ban. In my search for a good chicken fried steak, I stopped by the Texas Grill for lunch on my way to HEB. I walked in and did as the sign said, and seated myself. The server was on top of it and came over to me with two choices. A buffet style lunch, where you pick what you want and are charged accordingly, or a CFSteak from the menu for $10. I opted for the menu one because she said it was bigger. I got my side salad quickly, and it was delicious and fresh, I think she added a bit much cheese, but it was good. Ten minutes later I had my steak and fries. The fries were good, hot and crispy. The steak... the white gravy was in a paper cup, ewww, I cut into the edge and there was all crust, no steak. When this steak came out, I though, wow, eyes are bigger than my stomach! Not! about 1/4 of this was empty breading, and the breading that was on the steak was loose and just fell off, makes me wonder how he got it from the fryer to the plate. The breading was tastless and bland. I will probably go back again, someday, but not for chicken fried steak. Oh, and Joyce T, I am glad they went liveral freaks and stopped you smokers from ruining my food and social time. Just sayin' read more

We didn't come here for a long time because of the reviews but finally did on a Sunday morning since so much else is closed. It was great! The food was traditional and good. Exactly what we were in the mood for. The service was excellent and the prices were very reasonable. We will be back. read more

Hubby and I stopped for a late breakfast after he had blood drawn this morning..I do not know her name but our waitress was young with pretty long blonde hair and fantastic! Kept our coffee cups filled and served our breakfast promptly, even brought me a fork that I was missing. You get a huge plate ful of very good food. Egg was fried to perfection, hash browns crispy on outside and warm in the middle. Biscuits were huge and a meal in themselves, then served with gravy on the side..wow! So happy to read that there is no longer smoking allowed. That would have kept us from ever coming in and what a shame that would have been, enjoyed our meal and we will be back! read more

Wife and I stopped here a couple of weeks ago and decided to go for the buffet at lunch. Probably a bad idea. I ordered CFS off the menu last time in and it was very good. The CFS on the buffet was dry and meat inside a huge crust shell was not good. Also had the corn salad...terrible choice. The star of this show is the yeast rolls. Huge loaf of bread. read more

I have been going here for years. I love their breakfasts as well as their entrees- try the patty melt. They have a buffet, but not sure what days/times. The place is large and retro- not on purpose, just hasn't changed through the decades. Service is good and the staff is friendly. You pay at the counter, not through your server. Deserts- cakes and pies are made fresh daily- try the peanut butter pie. Portions are large, so be prepared! read more

My daughter and I ate here a few months ago, but I forgot about leaving a review. She and I were each getting a salad, splitting the fried shrimp and each getting a dessert. Looking back, I should have been concerned about getting fresh shrimp in Bastrop, , but my daughter really wanted it, so we got it. Totally tasteless. Seriously, I could probably bread and deep fry a kitchen towel and get a better result. Our side was cold,and the salad bar was picked over. I complained to the manager, because our server never checked back on us after we got our food, even though we asked for refills and she was incredibly rude. She interrupted me to say I shouldn't have eaten it if I didn't like it and they don't give away free food. The problem with that would be we each had half of one shrimp and the rest was untouched. She kept saying that there were more shrimp on the plate that we ate until I got the menu. Then, I showed her how many it says we got and then she rolled her eyes and said okay. The server came over and said that the owner doesn't like to hear complaints, so I should watch it. Couldn't figure out if that was a threat or what, but it was weird and offensive. Asked for refills again, which never came and we skipped dessert. She did redo our bill, but somehow by the time she took the shrimp off and charged us for the sides and salad , it wound up being more than what it would have been if nothing was changed. I don't want free food because it's bad, I want to pay for good food in the first place! I won't go back. Maybe it was the shrimp or just a bad night, but everyone was rude and we left still hungry. There are better places to eat in Bastrop, including an awesome Chili's up the road, so don't waste your time. read more

Not horrible and not great. Breakfast served all day. It was a cold day so i ordered hot tea. Water was only warm. Lunch from full menu or cafeteria style for selected items. Not many choices for a vegetarian. I had the fried veggie appetizer featuring mushrooms, pickle chips, and onion rings. It was quite acceptable. The ranch dressing was a bit bland. Hubbie had chicken fried steak and scored it a 6 on scale of 10. Servers were very friendly and it seemed there were quite a few locals dining there. It was around 1pm when we were there. read more

A good candidate for Restaurant Impossible - First the food: Well Grandma musta been fired, or died. The menu selection was VERY limited because they were out of almost everything. They put lime slices on the Iced Tea because they were out of lemons, and someone had to make a run to the store to get tomatoes for the salad bar. The open roast beef sandwich was cold and tough as leather, the gravy was congealed, and the bread under it was burnt. They swapped it out for a burger but the top of the line burgers were all so well done and dry they were hard to chew, the only good thing in this place was the fries, but those were EXTRA making the burger/fries/& Ice Tea over $10 - Ridiculous. Then they grumbled about changing the $8.95 Roast Beef down to the $6.25 for the burger on the bill! Really?! Who wants to pay more for crap you didn't / can't eat! The Décor: The carpet is definitely NOT new, it was worn, snagged, and had so many wrinkles it was a tripping hazard. Four of the hanging light fixtures had burnt out bulbs and one was even missing the glass globe. The out dated wallpaper is peeling in several places, but your kids might enjoy the two crane games by the front door. The only other good thing besides the fries was the new waitress who was truly embarrassed but handled everything as professionally as possible. We left her a tip, but unfortunately it was put in a collective jar to be split among all the staff. What a shame. Keep going until Robert Irvine does a makeover on this dump. read more

The best that can be said about the Texas Grill? It's a dive. The worst that can be said? It's a dive. If you like nasty dives that are filthy, with worn out carpet, this is the one for you. About the only purpose to this place is if you need an early morning breakfast on Saturday or Sunday in the Bastrop area, this is your only choice. The food is greasy and average. Dive food. If the restaurant choices weren't so limited in Bastrop, I don't think this place would be around. read more

Came for Sunday breakfast and will not be back. Food was bad. Hash browns were mushy and tasted strange. Veggie omelet was just some cold raw vegetables thrown in. Tables looked sticky although that may have only been because of worn varnish. Very disappointed. read more

My small family of 5 have been frequenting this restaurant almost weekly for months. Love the service we try to get there just after 11 so we can have the buffet. Love the country vegetables they are great and if you make it there on Friday the catfish totally rocks. read more

I have lived in Bastrop for many years, we have always come to The Texas Grill. It has been interesting to watch the many changes that they have made. I love the non-smoking, I come to the buffet in the afternoon because it's always good southern cooking. They have a good variety of foods to choose from. It's really the only place that I can bring all my kids, and everyone gets what they had a taste for. From country cooking to Mexican, and salads. Breakfast is just like grandma made when we were little. The service is friendly and prompt. Of course there have been a few ladies in the past that weren't the friendliest, but....they were there in the early hours of the morning to keep the after hours crowd under raps. The most memorable would be Ms. Bert. She has passed on now, but will always be remembered by those native to Bastrop!! Lol read more

There has not been smoking in the Texas grill for two years. The food is good home stile food. The waitresses are frendly and attinitive..The prices are in line with the economy. Try the eggs decorated not on the menue but the will fix to order. (scrambled eggs with chili and onions). read more
