We have been going here for years and it never disappoints. They are known for their chicken fried steak and that's usually what I order. We went for lunch so I got the lunch size portion which comes with one steak and it is still huge. Dinner portion comes with two steaks so be warned, you will be getting a lot of food. My lunch came with mashed potatoes and gravy and corn along with a delicious biscuit. The chicken fried steak has a light crispy breading and is never greasy. The gravy has a delicious peppery flavor. Plan on leftovers and if you're nice, they give you a little extra gravy. My husband got the chicken fried chicken dinner which comes with 2 large chicken breasts and 2 sides. He got the mashed potatoes and a salad. They have good salads but be warned, they put chopped green olives on top unless you request to have them left off. We both had half our meal left over to take home. I had been dying to try one of their deserts so I got the peach cobbler and it was really good. More of a cake type top than I'm used to but delicious. They have really good fried catfish and even a decent burger. On the weekend you can even get a brunch chicken fried steak(called Eggs Bubba) that comes with a fried egg on top. So yummy! If you get a chance to go to Texaz Grill please do. You won't regret it! Bring your appetite! The service is always top notch!

I live up the street from this place, and it was already a great experience being able to walk to it. Upon arrival, the inside is so much fun. Quite the exciting atmosphere, very Texan-country vibes. We arrived for dinner, and were seated almost right away. The waitress was very attentive, personable, and nice. She offered the specials, gave us some ideas about the menu, and notified us of their most famous dishes. After looking over the menu, I decided to go with the CFC (Chicken Friend Chicken), with mashed potatoes and French fries, with my gravy on the side. Before the entrees came out, the waitress dropped off some of their buttermilk biscuits, which I gotta say, were probably the best I've ever had. I've never been a huge fan of them previously, because most of the one I've experienced were dense, dry, and quite crumbly. TexAZ's biscuits were perfectly light, buttery, and soft. SO Good! Our entrees came out and they most certainly did not disappoint. The CFC comes with TWO, full-sized chicken breasts, fried to perfection. It's not a super thick batter, which makes for a really nice crisp crunch. The chicken was quite juicy and flavorful, and adding a little of their gravy on it only enhanced the dish even further. The mashed potatoes were also fantastic, and the French fries were very fresh, and lightly salted. Overall, the experience was great, the service was great, the food was great. Highly recommend if you are wanting something that feels like home-cooked, comfort food.

Really nice. First time here and not at all disappointed. The inside is really fun. And has all these decor around. The food however also pretty good. I had the steak and eggs. The steak personally could've used more salt and so could the potatoes. I had the Sunday driver as well. Tastes like oj and vodka. My mom had the burger and it's a big burger. The burger beef is very soft and easy to eat and flavorful. My steak was easy to cut as well. The waitress was very friendly and I'd come back. Party of 8. They accommodated us when they were full of reservations. And account of a somber occasion being celebrated for my friend that was leaving out of the country the next day. I've lived in the valley for over a decade and have never been to Texas Grill and I sad about it. The food have a really good dinner vibes. It's a little dark and the walls are busy but it's also kinda cool as you can find something new every time you come in. The food was good and plentiful seasoned well hot and I got exactly what I wanted!

Very cowboyesk.... Their prime rib was absolutely phenomenal - seriously smoky and delicious. I was *blown away* by that. The chicken fried chicken sandwich, though? Eh, it was okay, nothing to write home about. I needed to doctor it up a bit - added some coleslaw (with a healthy dose of Tabasco ), because it needed a little something extra, The bun came dry. There was again tomato pickle, lettuce and onion on the side.The chicken was a bit greasy, and the mashed potatoes, while super delish and the gravy was amazing with some lumps and peels. The only downside was the wait time. It took about an hour to get our food, and the place wasn't even that busy. Sounds like they might have been training some new staff. Overall, though, the prime rib and mashed potatoes made it worth the visit! Highly recommend trying that.

I have been going to this restaurant for years, even before it was Texaz when it used to be known as Lonestar. They have been in the valley for YEARS and I can understand why. Their food is simple and DELICIOUS. Their chicken fried steak is huge and I cannot even begin to describe the flavor. Their steaks are always perfectly cooked perfection and I always leave feeling full and satisfied. If you're looking for a casual night out with delicious steak and potatoes I would recommend this place. It's also fun to see what they've got on their walls as the place is packed with fun trinkets. read more

Ok..I've been here 2 or 3 times and what I like the best is their atmosphere. My home is Dallas and so much of Texas is in this joint. The owner has lots of ties to Texas and it's a joy to speak with him especially the stories behind the pictures. I have always ordered the same dish, chicken fried chicken which is delicious except for some reason the gravy tastes a bit off, can't explain it. So, what keeps me coming back, the atmosphere...next time I must try another dish and report on it. read more

This might sound strange - but on Friday (2/22/19) - I had one of the best fried pieces of fish I have had anywhere, and I was dining at TEXAZ Grill. Flaky, hot, just the right layer of breading, I would order that cod any day of the week. We also tried the chicken fried steak, but we aren't chicken fried steak aficionados, so while we still prefer a pork tenderloin to a chicken fried steak, there was nothing to complain about. The coleslaw is a little different, very heavy on the onion flavor. One of us liked it and one of us did not. The side of the potatoes (both mashed and fried) were very good as well. Homey atmosphere and glad we stumbled in. read more

I have been here 2 times in the last two months with my family for lunch. The atmosphere in the restaurant is awesome. I love the decor and overall feel of the business. Parking is an issue with larger vehicles but I will do what I have to do so I can get the famous chicken fried steak. As good as advertised. In my two trips to this location I have had to leave food on my plate because I was stuffed ( this is rare). This is becoming one of my favorite stops. read more

Atmosphere - great. Service - terrific. Food - blah. I had the chicken fried steak, it was bland as hell and horrifically greasy. My wife had the chicken kebab - it was at once overdone and yet smothered in butter, apparently to moisten it back up. If you are at all health-conscious, try another restaurant. If you are from Texas or just like bland, fried food with good beer, this is your place. read more

This is the ONLY place to get Chicken Fried Steak! The portions are HUGE so bring your appetite. The pulled pork is good too! Just took some visiting friends this last week and it was delicious as always. They loved it. These guys are very consistent and the service is excellent! The have a cool little bar too. I went here tonight after hearing good things about the place. I was very disappointed. The food servings were large but the food itself was not very good. The Chicken Fried Steak had no real taste at all. It was just bland. The pork chops were good but not great. Salad just a salad and the bread was cold. I do not think I will be going back after spending $46 dollars for so-so food. Very disappointing. read more

I'll be honest...I'm not a food connoisseur, but I know a good Chicken Fried Steak. Theirs is similar to how my mom makes it, and wow the portions are huge. And for the price? You just can't beat it. No wonder they are so popular and have been around forever. Love me some TexAZ, but be prepared: you get what you pay for, and for under $13 for a dinner don't expect some 5 star meal. This place is great and Steve, the owner, is always there and stops by to chat often. I ALWAYS have the chicken fried chicken sandy with longhorn cheddar. Fantastic! They have a secret sauce that goes well with the sandy, its basically a glorified thousand island. It comes with a side of the house gravy that I use with the potatoes. The wife ALWAYS has the catfish and she just loves it. The soup yesterday was a Mexican cheese soup, tomato based with spices and longhorn cheddar. Let me tell you that this soup was out of this world. I will be checking the website often to see when it is back and will surly go have it again. Most of the soups are great and every day there are different specials. Definitely have to check this place out if you have not been. read more

Hey folks, I don't eat meat and have no opinion about the chicken fried steak which is the "claim to fame" of this fun, funky, character-rich joint, but I do come here regularly for FRIED CATFISH, which is awesome! The dinner portion is two generous pieces of lightly battered, crispy on the outside, moist and tender on the inside catfish served with delicious tartar sauce on the side, while the lunch or optional smaller portion is one piece of fish. A dinner salad, biscuits, and Someone on Yelp complained about the simple, chopped lettuce salad which they felt was served with too much dressing. That is easily remedied by simply asking for dressing on the side, which my husband always does because he only likes a little and prefers to put it on to his liking ... simple! The mashed potatoes with country gravy are rustic ON PURPOSE, hello! If that's not your thing, there are other choices you can substitute, just ask! Sometimes I'm more conscious of watching carbs and choose sliced tomatoes instead, and you can, too, just ask your waitress for suggestions! All in all, this is a fun place to enjoy traditional comfort food, the hustle and bustle, the busy but friendly staff, the funky Western decor, and the wide variety of folks who enjoy the same. If you want "fine dining," get out the big bucks and go somewhere else, but if you want simple, down-home food in a unique environment, try TEXAZ! read more

Still not feeling well after eating at this restaurant. I ordered the ribeye steak. It arrived swimming in grease, having clearly been pan fried, too long. The flavor of the meat tasted like meat that sat in the fridge too long. My husband, typically a hearty eater, didn't even eat a quarter of his meal. It's really too bad, because the staff here seem nice. It isn't a place we would choose again. read more

Their chicken fried steak is the best, ever. And I'm a Texan! Along with it the mashed potatoes are like mom made them at home-seasoned just right. I assumed I'd get the steak each time I visited this grill full of Texas memorabilia, but then the next time was all-you-can-eat catfish. Oh, my. Possibly some of the best catfish I've ever tasted. Iced tea is also something to write home about. All in all, if you can't eat in Texas, this place is just as good! read more

For a genuine steak place that has good food and isn't fancy - this is the place. The food is straight forward and tasty. What a great, unique place! Smoked prime rib is fantastic - juicy, well seasoned, so tasty. Potato wedges are the perfect pairing. Very cold beer completes the Texas experience. Parking is a challenge but worth the trouble. read more

Always a must every time we visit Phoenix. The chicken fried steak is as good as anywhere we've dined throughout the south.The atmosphere reminds us of the honky-tonks in Nashville, Tn. minus the dance floors and live music. Servings are gigantic, the food is cooked to perfection, icy cold beer and nothing but friendly prompt sevice. Nothing pretentious, simple down home cooking, reasonably priced. We/I probably eat at TEXAZ GRILL 2 to 8 times a year. I already been there 2 times this year (2012). Chicken Fried steak (me) and chicken fried chicken are our favorites (wife/daughter). I like the ambiance. You can go dressed up or sandals and shorts. This place has been here for years. The surroundings neighborhood seems to be booming with eateries. Back to the restaurant. Wait staff seem to work here for ever. Hence the automoton staff. They serve you food, but not with a smile. I think that needs to change. I tried the T-Bone. Medium rare. It arrived half medium and half rare. The side was 6-8 double fried potatoes, for $24 dollars, I will stick to my favorite. If there was a 3.5 stars I would rate it at that, but I am a fan. read more

History

Established in 1985.

When we opened in 1985 as Lone Star Steaks, we promised to serve great food, from a real Texan, done one meal at a time, at Phoenix's Original Texas Steak House. We never imagined that anybody would be so arrogant as to try and lock up the name for the great state of Texas. We were wrong. A huge restaurant conglomerate from Kansas has threatened to take us to court to force us to quit using the words "Lone Star". Well - it seems there just wasn't enough room in town for two LONE STARS. We decided we'd rather keep on putting our money into great food and great service than blow it on a bunch of lawyers. So even though we were right and had a legitimate claim to use our old name, we sure didn't want to be confused with some slick, national chain with almost 100 restaurants. So - the old Lone Star became the TEXAZ GRILL at 16th Street and Bethany Home Road. And as for the new carpetbaggers in town; yeah, well, real Texans know what's right.

Served in a nearly soup bowl sized cup (hot) or gigantic mason jar (iced). Diner coffee can sometimes leave much to be desired but this coffee was soooo delicious and strong. The food? So awesome. I went with a classic breakfast plate - eggs, sausage, potatoes, blueberry pancakes. I added a biscuit because the menu said they were homemade and I had to try it. I'd just personally skip the steak next time and try something else.

That was a power move and I stand by it. My husband had the meatloaf sandwich special, which was so good I spent the rest of the meal in quiet mourning over my own ordering choices. Absolutely outstanding, no notes. The potato salad he got as his side was excellent too, which only added to my suffering. Now. The sides. The fries are mandatory. The Hawaiian coleslaw, on the other hand, is a trap I walked into so you do not have to. Sweet coleslaw is already a divisive concept, and this one doubles down with chunks of pineapple thrown in for reasons I can only describe as chaotic. If tropical fruit in your coleslaw is your thing, go for it. If you have any savory coleslaw loyalty whatsoever, order literally anything else. The ambiance is pure nostalgia, antiques everywhere you look, sandwiched on both sides by an antique shop, which is fitting because this whole place feels like a time capsule in the best possible way. And for my fellow vinyl collectors, this is a hidden gem. I turned around approximately six times and found a new box of records every single time. I did not come here expecting to go digging, but I am absolutely coming back to do exactly that. Apparently I cannot go anywhere without finding another way to spend money on albums. No regrets, this place has great taste in more ways than one.

Oh boy, where do I even begin with Texas Grill? Let's just say the experience was as big as the portions they served. And by big, I mean you could probably feed a small army with a single plate. Seriously, I could have used their chicken fried steak as a pillow, it was that massive! Now, let's talk about the gravy situation. Dry is an understatement. It felt like I was trying to swallow the Sahara Desert with every bite. Note to the chef: gravy should be smooth and creamy, not a desert mirage. Speaking of the chicken fried steak, I have to say, it was a bit of a letdown. I mean, I get it, Texas Grill, and everything is bigger when Texas is involved, but did you have to supersize the breading? I had to search for the steak amidst all that crispy coating. It was like playing hide-and-seek, but with my taste buds. And don't even get me started on the salad. Brown lettuce? Really? I thought I was in a comedy sketch or something. I half-expected the waiter to jump out and yell, "Surprise, it's a prank!" But alas, it was not a joke. Just a sad, wilted excuse for a salad. Blue cheese dressing which tasted out of the bottle was the only highlight from the salad. Now, I have to admit, the food was okay, but it definitely didn't live up to the hype. I've driven by this place for the past 20 years, wondering what all the fuss was about. Well, now I know. It's the kind of place you drive by, keep driving, and never look back. I will say the food is good- especially if you are looking for a yummy comfort meal. Now, with that being said.. It is a KNOWN fact the parking lot sucks to get in and out. Honestly, we would probably go more often if it wasn't so bad. This evening pulling in, my husband and I were verbally attacked by another so called patron. I get out of my car, and this old (WT) lady comes up to me like she was going to assault me, and yells, "are you F'ing kidding me." Apparently she didn't like the fact, I turned in as she was just sitting there on 16th St. I ran inside to make them aware of the situation- As I was talking to the staff, including the manager, these ladies walk in like nothing happened and like they did nothing. I let the manager know that we are regulars here and I don't feel safe eating in the same establishment with these ladies-- as they literally verbally attacked us. He goes, well they are regulars as well. So, me coming in shaken up that out of no where these ladies (I may have used more colorful language) attacked us. Man, I love this place. Every couple of months I get a hanker - you know, that rumbly sensation in your belly that somehow translates to english when the sound makes it to your ears... it says 'CHICKEN FRIED STEAK NOW' with enthusiasm - and the only way to put it to bed is to head down to the TEXAZ Grill. If you ask, they'll let you have TWO biscuits instead of 1 with a healthy wheat roll, and you can load em up with butter and honey while waiting for that monster-sized chicken-fried steak to land in front of you. It's the stuff of dreams. Look, everyone and their mother serves chicken-fried steak, but this place has been doing it RIGHT for like 20 years now, hand-hammered till it's so thin there's only one side, and then battered and fried like nobody's business. Not only is it the best in town, they also give you 2 of 'em stacked up so you can save one for a sandwich the next day. Sure, you could just eat them both while you're there, but then you wouldn't have room for the bread pudding with whiskey sauce. Lord, don't even get me started on the bread pudding. New to the neighborhood. Had a neighbor ask me if I'd ever eaten at TEXAZ Grill. Said that I have heard good things about it but never stopped in. Our new neighbors invited us to join them at this neighborhood favorite. Could not have been more excited to find this place now so close by. Was in the mood for a steak. Had the filet, Was cooked absolutely perfect. My wife was not in the mood for a big meal so she had the catfish. Breaded just right. Light and fluffy. Both of our friends had the Chicken Fried Steak which we're told is their famous dish. OMG. The portions were the size of the plate. Man did that look good. Will definitely be coming back to give that a try. Had never had a Shiner. Served with tiny little glass. Was told that is a Texas thing... My friends and I ended up here after being turned away from another restaurant for having a "too big" party, despite having a reservation. We chose this place based on its ratings, and it exceeded our expectations. Our waitress was kind but sassy, which suited our group perfectly. She anticipated our needs and the drinks were strong, which we loved. It was my birthday, and this place saved the day. Everyone enjoyed their food, and there were no mistakes. I was so full, but my steak (medium) was incredibly tender that I had to resist finishing it to avoid overeating. I highly recommend this place for its food, servers, and lively atmosphere. Comfort food at its finest, the chicken fried steak always hits the spot and the gravy is killer! If I could eat it every day without gaining a pound I would, but as with all comfort food at comes at the expense of a few extra calories. The BBQ here is my favorite BBQ ever, very smokey rich flavor with their sauce. The BBQ plates are only served as specials a few nights a week but definitely worth seeking out. Had the Santa Anna Shake recently, an ice cream beverage made with tequila?! Surprisingly it worked great, very delicious. As I mentioned before, if you're trying to watch your figure this is not the place. But if your trying to indulge in some hearty Texas goodness, this is the spot. read more

Well let me just tell ya.........I was born in Texas and moved to Phoenix when I was 3. Lived there for 29 years. I now live in Round Rock, Texas. I have never had a ribeye that tasted better than the one at Texaz Grill. I have eaten steaks all over the state of Texas and not one of them has tasted better than there. I have never had a plate there that was bad. I kinda agree on the whole Vodka thing that one reviewer stated. For those of you who think the place has bad steaks, well you should come to Austin (close to Round Rock) and taste the ones here before you complain. I would fly to Phoenix just to eat a good piece of Beef.. Way to go Texaz Grill... Love and miss ya read more

True to all the reviews, Texaz Grill is indeed a thriving local spot filled with the owners quirky character over its 25+yr history! all the waitresses provide that at home graciousness you'd expect from Aunt May. The food is down home scratch cooking in ginormous Texas portions. You'll likely not need a drink refill either as the water cups could drench 2! Fried catfish is succulent and tasty no need for additional seasoning, while their staple chicken fried steak lunch portion could put one under food coma if finished. Great atmosphere and friendly banter keeps this joint alive and having a starbux across the street is extra kudos :) read more

Help me understand the bad reviews... or maybe one time experience doesn't speak volumes, but I was under the belief that first impressions are key. Anyways, came here after my flight because it was close to my hotel. I ordered the Prime Rib 16oz Mulligan cut, medium rare (the only right way to eat prime ribs of a cut this good), and was sold on the first bite. Now I know what Portland is missing: steakhouses like this one. The hot au jus made it even better. I am ashamed to say that I ate the whole thing in one sitting, but can you blame me? My tastebuds thanked me that night while my waistline grew and grew. I shall be back. read more

We are never disappointed when we go to TEXAZ Grill. It is always a treat and a wonderful experience. The prices are high but well worth the price for food, experience, atmosphere, and quality. The only thing I would say it the 40+oz Porterhouse is not as good and the 20+oz. Not saying there was anything wrong with the bigger portion, we are well aware it is more difficult to cook and marinate a larger portion of meat. The 20oz was like butter and the 40oz was amazing as well, just not as to die for as the 20oz. Complements to the chef for everything, Green Salad was amazing too. Highly recommend it for all occasions. read more

I think Pauly C. may be too GTL for TEXAZ Grill... seemed like a pretty legitimate review (sarcasm). Coming from a regular patron of the neighborhood joint, its one of my favorite spots in town. I anxiously await the moment when their piping hot chicken fried steak comes out with its peppery gravy and I venture into Texas culinary heaven. Their beer battered shrimp are huge and are hands down the best shrimp I've had in town, no joke! Finish with a slice of their pecan pie, and bring on a pleasant food coma. I love TEXAZ. Just Say No! I am a big Chicken Fried Steak fan, so the first time my wife and I were at Texaz Grill, we could not wait to try their signature dish but, when the food arrived, it was "just OK". On our second visit it was just plain awful. The breading was coming off the steak and the gravy was more paste than gravy. There was certainly a lot of food on our plates. I assume they were going for quantity over quality. For the $35 price tag we will simply save the calories and not return. The only reason for the 2 star review is that the servers were nice and considerate. read more

The people here are so nice so it's upsetting to have to write this. Most of the items on the menu are coated in seasoning that has MSG. My family has left with asthma attacks, itchy skin and allergic reactions due to the high MSG content. They even have shakers on the table with MSG in it. Potato chips taste *GOOD* because they're seasoned with MSG. MSG is like crack for your tastebuds but it also causes brain issues because it's an excitotoxin. (Just google it.) I hope the restaurant will swap these MSG seasonings out in the future. read more

Stopped in for lunch yesterday...Was craving a good burger. However, when I saw the Chicken Fried Turkey on the menu, I had to put the burger on hold and enjoy one of my favorite items on the menu. (This is not always on the menu) All I can say is that this meal puts a smile on my face each time I eat it. The turkey is nice and tender and huge. The gravy is phenomenal and of course the mashed potatoes are that perfect home cookin' you want when you come to TEXAZ. Service at the bar is always terrific no matter who is behind the bar. read more

This restaurant was recommended to us during our stay in Phoenix. It does not take reservations so we knew to come a bit early to beat the crowds. The place was hopping and it was very energetic, loud and lively. We felt like we were with family and every one knew each other. Very welcoming. We all ordered the Chicken Fried Steak and the home made coleslaw. All I can say is that the food was amazing! Definitely come hungry, but even then, be prepared to take home a "doggie bag". We look forward to our next trip there. read more

We came in for dinner and we're glad we did. We ordered the prime rib and the chicken fried steak. All was delicious and the portion sizes were better than what we paid for, even the side salad is big. The service was very good. The restrooms were a little small but clean. I hated the parking both front and back, the spaces were small and there weren't enough for such a popular place, and it's shared my 4 other business on that corner. We would recommend anyone to stop in for a bite. read more

Thank you Texas for introducing me to the Steak Lin Su Saturday special! It's a fantastic steak topped with béarnaise sauce, artichokes, and mmmmm shrimp. YUM! The chicken fried chicken is DELISH!!!
