From the outside it does not have curb appeal. But it is bigger than you expect. You enter a patio area, end then the bar area and then you wonder where to go next. The layout is a bit challenging since the menu board faces perpendicular to where you enter. When I arrived a group were craning their necks to read the options. This is not fancy. My order was called and I had the charcoal grilled fish and my friend had the classic burger . We also split the chili fries. Both came on paper fry containers and a cafeteria style tray. There was a large condiments stand with wagon wheels. It is similar to chuckbox but much larger. The food was decent and the fish cooked correctly. I apologize for no pics, we were engaged in a stimulating conversation. People put food first but in today's workd, we need to spend more time talking and listening to one another. I completely forgot to take pics of the food. Overall, it is a simple smashed style of burger patty. The ambiance is lower lighting with a western aged setting. Think traditional western style. It was my first time and while not my preferred style of burger, the food is decent. This is a place that offers customizable food, TV's and it was not too noisy. First time here. Unfortunately, I was a bit ill when I walked in. I thought it was just because I hadn't eaten much in the past 24 hours. Had nothing to do with their food. It was just me. I had the Border Burger. Thought the green chilis sounded good, but they were full chilis, and I prefer them diced up. I probably could have requested that, if I had known, or diced them myself.. No big deal, I just put them aside. The rest of the burger was very tasty. I also had the fried mushrooms. They were probably frozen and from a box... Unless you really like fried mushrooms, I wouldn't bother. I really loved stuffed mushrooms, and sometimes I hope the fried mushrooms will be close enough, but not here. This place is BUSY; cops, firefighters, and lots of tradesmen. They could really use one or two people to take the food out to the tables so you don't have a half dozen people standing around the register with their thumbs up their butts waiting for their food. They have a decent-looking condiment/toppings bar, but after standing around waiting for my order to come out and feeling very dizzy, I didn't have the energy to bother with it. Any classic, hamburger loving person should come here. I've been wanting to try it for ages, and the food and vibes just bring me back to a feeling of when I was growing up. Simple ingredients and straight forward, tasty food. They even have a salad bar for your toppings! That made me so happy. I got the Border Burger that comes with jalapeño cheese and a grilled green chile. We also split onion rings and fries. Both were delicious. The hoopla was right on target! No other burger joint over the last decade preps up their ingredients like The Original Hamburger Works! First off the grilled/roasted green chile (a whole one) are perfectly done, tasty and tender! The mushrooms are fresh, tender and perfectly sautéed. The extraordinary bacon is slightly crisp and perfectly tasty. Their sautéed onions were fresh and delectable. The cheese was grilling on the burger just right. And last but not least, the half-pound of beef burger patty is perfectly char grilled over aromatic and tasty mesquite, not overdone, not underdone, and extremely tender - almost to the point of not needing any accoutrements (lettuce, tomato, onions, jalapeños, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, sliced jalapeños, relish or any of their other fresh goodies at the self-serve toppings bar. My wife and I like a good burger and saw a reel on Facebook for The Original Hamburger Works so decided to head down there to try it out. The inside of the restaurant is pretty cool with lots of old signs on the walls for decoration. The menu is pretty straight forward. I had the great big one and my wife had the big one. We both ordered fries and a soda. The food was very good, I liked the fixings bar as I'm picky about how my burger is constructed. The fries were hot and cooked perfectly. Great burger spot! New to the area so we wanted to checkout a good local spot instead of a chain burger spot. Huge dining area and the restaurant also has a bar. You pay when you order then wait for your name to be called once your food is ready. They have a condiment bar where you prep the toppings you want on your burgers, there's a large selection. There were a lot of people which felt like a good sign, but the service was also quick and easy so we didn't have to wait long for our food. Overall the burgers were really good. You can pick between a 1/2 pound or 1/3 pound burger. They have tons of options on the menu and also sell chicken sandwiches, chicken tenders, fish and chips and fish sandwiches. The bacon cheeseburger was awesome as the patty was well cooked and seasoned and the bacon was crispy and tasty. The border burger was great too. Tasted home made. The green chiles were big and we wish they had been cut up but very tasty burger. The fries were nice and crispy and well seasoned. The onion rings were okay too, we could tell they got a little cold or that the oil was old so they tasted a bit off but we did go an hour before closing so we think they will be better next time when we go earlier. They don't use a flattop instead, it's basically BBQ'd using select wood as a heat source. The taste from a well used and seasoned 'pit' (if you will) cannot be described nor replicated so the word "Original" is just that! Remember the failed business Fudruckers where they had a dress-your-own food bar? They have a successful concept with abundant options so you can do whatever you want with dressing your food. This place has been in business for over 40+ years and I finally had an opportunity to try them since I was in the area. It shares a parking area with other businesses in the complex. The lady taking orders, literally, was handling customers in line, phone calls and online ordering, but she was friendly and professional the entire time. I decided to try their "Big One" burger (1/3 lb) w/cheese and a side order of fried zucchini. You can see their chefs/cooks working hard on fulfilling orders and after about 10-15 minutes, my order was ready. While it's basically a burger, the patty was seasoned well and cooked properly. You do have the choice of how you build your burger with their sides wagon (ketchup, mustard, mayo, lettuce, onions, etc...). It does have a western decor along with a lot of memorabilia items that include signs and toys. There is a person that comes through and cleans tables as they open up. It's a fairly good size building with various table configurations that also includes a bar with more tables and a common courtyard for outdoor seating. We used to Like this place. Love the onion rings. Teriyaki chicken was very good. At about 3:30 pm on Monday a woman with long red hair walked through the restaurant, spraying dining room with bathroom spray. Many diners were very upset and moved to different areas of restaurant. Thank goodness we were almost finished eating and got out there as fast as we could. This is unacceptable. One of the great part about this restaurant is the bbq grill aroma not poisonous chemical bathroom scents. Unacceptable, does the health department ok this? I was surprised just how big this place was inside and there's a bar that seems to be in a completely different area from the rest of the restaurant. The inside is full of interesting and antique looking decorations that give the place an interesting atmosphere. This is another place where you line up and order your food up front before finding your own table to sit at. They also have a condiment bar for adding your own basic toppings on the burger. Came on a Tuesday right at opening. Fairly large restaurant with awesome western vintage decor from days long gone. Only one other patron during this time. Good menu as it had plenty of hamburger combinations and side choices. Decided on the Big one (with grilled onions and mushrooms) with fries and the wife got the Small one with Onion Rings. We had a good laugh at their "Retirement Burger." Spent a good amount of time watching the burgers get grilled during our wait. It became VERY busy shortly after as well. Several large groups received their orders before us, which confused me since we were of the first three patrons. Finally got our order and we made our way to the wagon condiment bar line to build our dream burgers! Yes, we waited awhile, but it was worth it after we took our first bites! Flavorful patties and fresh veggies made me giddy. Couldn't stuff my face fast enough. Fries were not hot or crispy at all, so we sadly abandoned them. The onion rings were perfect though! Amazing crunch and taste! Would have ordered more, but the line became quite long. Although we had to wait a long time for our orders, the service was great and the burger quality was awesome! Well, we jumped on the trendy-train and got off here after it appeared all over social media. Hamburger works was good overall, and serves a decent burger. First, I don't know why some people have called this a "dive bar." It's not. It does have a bar in a far back corner, but it's hardly a "dive." I'd call this place a dark, casual burger joint that is really big and expansive. It reminds me of the 80's classic, "TGI Friday's." So expect a wait, especially with all the social media buzz lately. If there's one characteristic feature of this burger restaurant that you need to know, it's this: the burgers are cooked over an open mesquite Grill. That means they burn mesquite-wood logs and cook the burgers on a grate over the burning wood. It gives the burgers a very specific, smoky flavor. Some people don't like the acrid smokiness, and some do. But know that ahead of time. I think it's a pleasant "backyard BBQ" kinda flavor. Just know it's not a griddled burger. So they're good. The patties are fresh and hot and not frozen cow-pucks. The buns are very fresh and soft. The condiments are your responsibility. This place has a big "chuck wagon-style" cart with all the fixings (tomato, sauces, jalapeños, lettuce, pickles, etc.). I found that they really should have a "signature" burger sauce to differentiate them. Also, it looks and feels weird to be handed a burger that's just a dry meat patty and two dry buns. You need to walk over to the cart and season and sauce your burger yourself. I didn't care for that, but it's fine. The "famous" fried zucchini is just restaurant-supply frozen, breaded zucchini rounds that they deep-fry. The ranch dressing was great, though the zucchini batter was super underdone and raw in the middle. I'd give em a 6 or 7. Fries were standard and mine were a bit overcooked and dark brown. But they were hot. The menu is super basic. Just burgers and hot dogs and sides. They do have a great fountain with a TON of soda choices, so points there. Service is just the order-taker and she was fine. Nothing noteworthy. All in all it was good. It didn't change my life or make a noteworthy impact. If you're in the area and you're craving a burger, give it a try. There are better burgers in Phoenix, but this is a very respectable one. Just remember that mesquite-grilled thing. Enjoy! read more

Oh my goodness! We haven't been here in at least 10 years! We moved to the SE side of town and we haven't been back often. We were close and we knew we had to stop in! This place is still amazing! This place has amazing burgers but their condiments bar takes a good above average burger to next level. They've always had an amazing list of burgers to choose from, I got "The Double Big One!" So good! We also got the Mushrooms and Zucchini, we'd absolutely do that again! The only problem we had is with our cashier. I gave her a $50, our bill came out to $42 and change, she gave me $2 back and change. I told Janna I was going to put all of the change in the tip jar so the they would have gotten $7 and change. So by shorting me, they only got $5. I don't know if she was being dishonest but I'd feel a lot better about it if I gave her multiple bills. read more

I'm in the Encanto Palmcroft area and the proximity to a bunch of places many phonecians, especially the Scottsdale variety, may have never even heard of. I've graduated now and Phoenix continues to impress with its diversity of culture and cuisine, especially DTPhx.
