We have been going to the Texican in Mancheca for over 2 years now and we love it. Recently used the banquet room for our rehearsal dinner and it was perfect. Delta did a great job and she is so efficient and easy to work with. The food is always consistent and the weekly specials really make it a place someone can eat at twice a week and not feel like they are spending too much money. This is my favorite non-well known Mexican restaurant in Austin. It is never too crowded and the wait staff is always so helpful and kind. Their happy hours and deals are solid. One of their texican martinis and you can bet you'll need to eat that basket of chips to drive home. All for $5 on Wednesdays! My girlfriend has been craving cabrito for the last several months. She also likes surprises. So I Googled the best cabrito in Austin. Several rave reviews were of the grilled cabrito at Texican Cafe. So Saturday night we hit the road and drive the 40 minutes to see if it was as good as the reviews I read. Started with a house margarita on the rocks (her) and a frozen margarita for me. Generous portions, but not so much alcohol you need to worry. We had the small ones, not the grande ones. I ordered the San Antonio enchiladas. I am pretty picky about my enchiladas and these didn't disappoint. The basic enchilada was really good, but instead of a typical meat sauce on them, they used carne guisada (big chunks) and the gravy from the carne. I have never tried this combo before and it was really good. I forgot to order onions on my enchiladas, but these were very tasty without the traditional onions. Typical rice and beans were good too. My girlfriend said her cabrito was not seasoned heavily which is what she likes. Her words "tasty and tender." I ate a couple of pieces and agreed that it was good. The cabrito was served with a generous portion of grilled tomatoes, onions, and bell peppers. She didn't leave anything on the plate but a few bones. The only disappointment was the tres leches cake. We have eaten some very good tres leches around Austin but were disappointed with theirs. Service was good, especially since the place was pretty full when we were there, about 7:45 PM. Next time we go back may be to try their breakfast/brunch menu. read more

Me and a bud tried this place out for the first time last night. I'm gonna go conservative with my rating after my first visit. I don't feel that it quite meets Habanero level but it is still quite good and definitely deserves a revisit. And cummon people...ya don't rate a Tex-Mex restaurant based on frakkin cheese enchiladas! I mean seriously?!? Anyhoo, I learned that Tuesdays are $2 draft pints. AND Negro Modelo is on draft! How frakkin awesome is that! They don't charge for chips and salsa +1. The salsa is sufficient but could be a bit more picante for my taste. They have chuletas rancheras on their menu which made me immediately like this place. Thinly cut pork chops with onions, tomatoes, and serrano peppers = killer. The charro beans were equally delicious with nice, plentiful hunks of bacon. My friend had the carne guisada. He said the meat was tender and the gravy was great; perfect heat level and flavor. I was glad to know that. I'm really disappointed when the meat in carne guisada is tough and chewy. =( Service was friendly and attentive. The menu has cabrito on it sure, but at like $15.99. Like wowsers! O_o I'm thinking I need to go into the goat raising business. I will return to try some more menu items to see if I can increase my rating one more star. read more

Dropped this past Sunday to try it out. The place was not super busy yet as it was around 2:00 in the afternoon. Quick seating and waitress was polite and quick. Chips and salsa were good. My better half ordered the Santa Fe enchiladas and I the Ranchera chicken enchiladas. The order came pretty quick....about 10 minutes or so. Food was good but not great. I've had better Chicken ranchera enchiladas at other establishments. The Santa Fe enchiladas were super greasy. I guess from melted cheese and the ground meat. She ate what she could but left most of the food on the plate. I did not try anything from the bar as my interest in in the food. Will probably not be back as there are other restaurants that serve better Tex-Mex food. read more

My husband and I walked in and it automatically smelled like cigarette smoke or an old bar. I thought " maybe its because its next to Stardust bar" and ignored it. The place was dead. There were a group of wait staff sitting and folding napkins. Another red flag.. Why was this place dead on a Saturday night? We got seated right away ofcourse, and not only was our table dirty but you could see old food underneath and right by our table. The table was sticky and dirty as well. Update: I ate at Texican again and it did taste fresh and good, but it sat very heavy in my stomach. I'm not sure what they used to cook with but I had a stomachache after eating the fajitas. I am a little scared to go back again in case it has the same effect. Great Tex-Mex food! The restaurant is clean and we received great service. The salsa is homemade and has just the right amount of bite. I had the chicken fajitas which were well priced and tasted great! The flour tortillas were some of the best I have had in a long time...hot, fresh and soft. read more

Well we returned last night for a birthday party, the scene hasn't changed as the server was not able to serve the large group and he received no help from the management. This place is still poorly run and the food is just average. Too many places to go with better food, that are run better. I just moved to Austin and was happy to find a Mexican restaurant close to my neighborhood. We stopped in Friday night and found a full parking lot. It could have been that the crowds were there taking advantage of happy hour. We arrived at 7 pm and were fortunate to find a parking space close to the front door. After a short wait for the table (I had a beer at the bar), we ordered the El Paso style enchiladas. I am originally from El Paso and was looking forward to enjoying some home style food. I was not disappointed. Delicious enchiladas that were perfectly with just the right sauce and cheese. The rice and beans were also very delicious. Chips and salsa= perfection. We will go back to this neighborhood restaurant often. I really can't think of anything to complain about. We love going to Texican Cafe. Normally we have great service and the food is amazing! Today was not the case of that at all! They sat us in the back booth right next to an employee entrance which would have been fine but after you read this review, you will see it was far from. We had a waitress named Elizabeth and she seemed very promising at first. She asked us what we wanted to drink and any appetizers we wanted. She brought us a big thing of chips and 2 salsas. Little did we know... that was all we would see of her for a whole hour after immediately putting our food in. I get being in the service industry it can be difficult. That sometimes you may have more tables than you can handle. (Sadly, there are no excuses for what we just endured because there were maybe 3 tables being used at that time.) When I finally received my orange juice an hour later and then our food FINALLY came out you could tell my plate had been sitting under a heat lamp for a good while. The cheese and beans made that crust film over it. You know, when you can poke holes in it and see that the top layer has dried and hardened. We waited so long for our food that we were full from the chips and salsa we had. We immediately asked for to go boxes as we had been sitting there hearing the employees in the back repeatedly bang on something, non-stop the whole time we were there. She finally came to get our card to pay which was an act of congress in itself, and we waited a good 10 minutes and she was still just walking around and still hadn't even processed our card. After the continuous banging on whatever they were hitting, we couldn't take it anymore and we went to the middle and asked if she could just run our card. She said yes here you go just leave it here when you finish and walked away. We went to the front and I mentioned to the hostess "hey, just a heads up, where you sat us was extremely noisy so you probably don't want to sit other people there" she brushed it off saying "my bad" with no real concern at all. So I'm sure that the next customers coming in will be sat right there with no real thought again and I pitty them and hope they bring ear plugs, and don't forget to order EVERYTHING YOU WANT right then and there in the beginning. These folks went above and beyond while I was there with a large group of 25+ while celebrating my daughter's birthday, I looked like a total hero but they really saved the day, WOW!! Well I didn't want to post my displeasure to your page but since my message I sent in private has been ignored... My wife and I have been regulars to your establishment on manchaca for many years and for the first time we were disappointed in the quality of the food. It started with my wife's drink you all served here in a shaker because you ran out of glasses( your a restaurant and bar), then came out nachos which tasted like they were made with really old chips, then the tortilla soup I ordered was served Lukewarm at best and to top it off the fried ice cream my girls ordered was ridiculous at best(picture attached) I'm not sure how all of these things went bad on the same night but like they say when it rains it pours. After years of dining here I am not so much upset that we he the one bad night but the ignoring of my complaint has left me questioning if I want to come back. read more

I took my dad out for Brunch on Saturday and I have to say we were both disappointed with the quality of food. We both ordered the Migas and I had asked for crumbled bacon mixed in and it came to me with no bacon at all. The potatoes were under cooked and were huge making it very difficult to put in the tiny tortillas. I would like to recommend that you automatically add bacon to the Migas and please cut the potatoes in much smaller pieces and make sure they are cooked like almost fried. Texican has become very popular but seems to be abandoning some things that have given them success. The Margaritas were almost straight lime juice with no hint of Tequila. In the past, as in most Mexican restaurants, I could substitute a side salad for rice & beans,but no more here. Was charged $4.50.for salad and then it was served after my meal arrived. I've been eating at the Texican Cafe on Manchaca for decades. Their food, drinks and service are always good. My father always orders the Steak Juana Maria served with beans and hand cut fries and it never fails to please. My late Uncle loved the Cabrito, which is always fall apart tender. The Fajita Chimichangas are huge, stuffed with meat, cheese and various other goodies, then rolled in a flour tortilla and fried. The steak & shrimp combo fajitas are a personal fave of mine. The shrimp are seasoned perfectly and the steak is tender. I've taken a few vegetarian friends to the Texican through the years and they're always happy with an order of spinach & mushroom enchiladas. The food is definitely Tex-Mex, NOT traditional Mexican, but it's darn good eating just the same! read more

The food here is decent but it won't knock your socks off. They start you off with homemade chips and salsa; I've never gotten stale chips, and the salsa has the perfect amount of heat (could use a little salt). The tortilla soup is not the best I've ever had but it is pretty good. The migas are great, and I also like the taco salad. I'd avoid the burgers (but hey, it's a Mexican restaurant, why are you getting burgers anyway?). The restaurant itself looks rundown and could use an update. read more

I have been eating here since it opened I am just getting around to a review. I was hoping the crowds would stay away. I see everyone I know at the Texican, okay the secret is out. THE BEST TEXMEX IN AUSTIN. We started coming here way back when as it was the only place south for good food. The only thing that has changed is we have lots of options now. Thankfully the Texican has not changed. The folks that work here stay here that says a lot for a start. The food is always fresh made and delicious. The salsa is so good and they aren't shy about more chips and salsa. The homemade flour tortillas are worth the carbs. I have become a fan of the Texican Martini.
