Really cute Tex-Mex restaurant tucked away on the west side of River North. Interior is very clean but pretty minimal, and a short menu with a few really solid options. Would be a good place for lunch or takeout but there's seating inside as well. The owner is a very kind lady who seems to run the entire place (ordering, cooking, serving) herself. There is self service refillable coffee. The breakfast tacos come in a pretty generous portion - the egg and potatoes are basically a omelette on a flour tortilla while the chorizo came out very pleasantly spicy. The top item on the menu is definitely the texas chilli mac, which comes as a pile of elbow macaroni covered in cheese and the Texas red chili. I thought the chili mac could have used a little more toppings and fewer macaroni - with how it came it was a heaping pile of plain macaroni and ended up being a dry. Portions were pretty large for the price point.

This place is a gem! I used to have a go to breakfast spot I went to frequently back in SoCal called Rooster Cafe and somehow this one seems to remind me of it. Small, hole in the wall, limited menu with emphasis on quality ingredients, execution, and strictly open for breakfast & lunch. PROS: -Showed up about 1pm on a Thursday. No line or wait. Sick. -Was craving breakfast and the chef in the back was more than willing to make me the green chorizo breakfast sandwich I was craving even though they typically only serve breakfast items up until 11am. Dope, but why not all day breakfast? -They serve La Columbe coffee. Didn't really mean anything to me, but I can appreciate quality coffee. Win. -They have those plastic squeeze bottles so you can hose down your food with as much salsa as you please. Love it. -All food is priced under $10. Yee. Save money. CONS: -I smell like a burrito yet they don't serve burritos. I could see breakfast burritos making a killing here. Just sayin'. That's about all I got on this. Will definitely be back to try more. 'Til next time, cheers!

DAMN! Is that for real? I saw a pic of this on Yelp and knew I had to hurry my ass over instantly to try it! Great portion!

My favorite tex-mex in Chicago, that's conveniently located across the street from me. The downside is that this place is only open from 8am-3pm, so if you don't work in the area, your best chance is catching their delicious breakfast/lunch on the wkend. They must be doing really well for themselves. River North real-estate can be pricey, so to only stay open for a few hours and sustain a business without selling alcohol is very impressive. Everything I've had here is ridiculously tasty. The first time I ordered a Mexican King Ranch Casserole, which is one of their specialties. The portion was a bit small, but it was just the right amount for me. The dish was bursting with flavor. It comes with a side of slaw. The slaw with hints of lime juice was a perfect complement to the dish. I went back yesterday and got their Texas chili mac. Great portion. The bf and I split that and an order of the guisado tacos which comes with two. The flour tortilla was so soft and the thinness of the flour was just right. A tad chewy but thick enough where the filling wouldn't sink through if I added a bunch of sauces as I always do. It came with a hefty portion of hash potatoes. Make sure to try their sauces! Warning: they stop serving their breakfast items at 11am. Not printed on their menu. One of these days, I'll wake up earlier (I'm a night owl), probably get in at 10:55am, just to try their Austin-style breakfast tacos (chorizo tacos) and quiche.

Counter Service. Good food served in a la-di-da attitude with a venue that makes you cry. The only decent meal in this neighborhood. Excellent price and portion at $10 below. Hearty menu with great preparation. GREEN CHORIZO BREAKFAST SANDWICH serves 2 light eaters. Nice toasted bread, good amount of chorizo and perfectly moist 1-pc scrambled egg. Well seasoned and perfect as-is. You don't need the optional dry/piecey pico de gallo and/or the salsas, but if you like 'em...pour it. My lucky day as Kim as strawberries as a fruit option. Bottomless LA COLOMBE coffee. WARNING: - menu items are subject to availability - vent may be on but smoke still in the dining area that seeps into your clothing (so, no dates here as you will smell like food) - smoke makes your eyes watery

There's a little false representation going on the menu. Menu indicates they serve Gulf Shrimp tacos. My claim is that the shrimp on the taco are far too small to be legitimate Gulf Shrimp. I'm not a marine biologist so I can't prove it but everyone knows Gulf Shrimp is bigger right?? The sauce on the tacos werent great. Luckily I ordered another dish as well. The chili Mac. The restaurant really redeemed themselves here. Good taste, decent portion size and put some of the green salsa on it. They also throw in some Fritos with the chili Mac! I'd go back but avoid the gulf shrimp tacos!!

In town from Texas and was looking for some breakfast tacos, found Texican and felt like I was home. Great chorizo and potatoe tacos. Will be back!!

The chili-mac and chicken casserole were okay, not spectacular. I liked the shrimp taco more, but it was also just okay. The lady owner/manager who was there was a bit on edge with the rest of the staff, which was uncomfortable to witness. She needs to relax just a little and loosen up.

I recently enjoyed some delicious shrimp tacos from Texican. For the price I expected more food, but in the end the great flavors still satisfied. Happy to have these guys across the street from my office in Chicago!

We've been in twice in the last 4-5 months, and I like the indoor-outdoor space on nicer days. The value proposition on this menu is terrible unless you come in for happy hour (4-6 PM), and even then, the appetizers are so tiny that they end up being food for one, not many. The margs aren't bad and the "pizzadillas" are the go-to for the group because that ends up being a decent deal when looking to entertain the group. I don't have any service issues, and Texan's location is perfect for "let's start here then go down the street." And, at 4:30 or 5 PM, we haven't had an issue getting space for 10-12 very last minute, although I'm sure that will change over the summer. Average stuff, elevated by a big space. I would skip this place for date night, but with a crowd, worth a look!

I visited recently on a rainy day and noticed water leaking inside the building and by leaking I mean it was literally raining inside. Unfortunately, I remember seeing the same issue last summer, which is a bit concerning from a safety and upkeep standpoint there's literally wires and heaters the water is pouring out next to. The music was also extremely loud, making it difficult to have a conversation, and the sound quality from the speakers was not very clear felt like listening to nails on a chalkboard. On a positive note, the service was excellent. The drink selection is somewhat mediocre, but the draft margaritas are very good. The food menu is weird, those looking for more traditional tacos may not find them here. I think simple would get them a lot further.

We all had different types of tacos, so I can only really talk about mine. I had the taco dinner - three tacos - Asada, Carnitas, and Al Pastor. Everyone seems to rave about the tacos. I thought they were good, although I'm not sure, for the price, it was much better than any other Mexican restaurant. The steak, which had an extra cost, was just okay. The carnitas were good, and the Al Pastor was good, but not outstanding. The rice and beans were really outstanding and also a highlight of the meal. But, if fairness, good is still good. I plan to give this another try. I suspect if I order something different, given how good the service was, I'll be more pleased with the experience.

I had the Mojito Pina. I asked for it to be made with pineapple juice instead of seltzer, but I swear it had carbonated water in it , and all I could taste was lime and zest. I only drank 1/4 of the drink. The chips in salsa are complimentary and both were fresh and delicious. I had the Salmon Rostizado. It was deliciously moist, served with sweet potatoes, salad plantains, and mango salsa. Before I left , I told the waiter the drink wasn't good and appeared to have carbonated water, he denied it and said he made it himself. This might be the problem: waiters acting as bartenders.
