Absolutely some of the best food I've had in Portland, certainly the best fries! My boyfriend and I have come here 3 times this week the food is so good. We always get the down and dirty fries and the tacos locos. The meat is SO tender and good, cooked to absolute perfection and no bad pieces. The fries are for sure house cut and fried, the onions (all three varieties pickled, grilled, and fresh) are AMAZING. The real stand out for me on both dishes are the sauces that come on them both. They're so unique and delicious! They both are very cheesy too, which my boyfriend and I LOVE and were so impressed with the cheese pull on the tacos. They food doesn't take too long, I'd say about 5-10 minutes on average, maybe 15 on a busy day and it's absolutely worth the wait. The best part though is that I have a seafood allergy (both fin fish and shell fish) and my partner spoke to the owner of the cart who made a point to make sure I didn't get cross contaminated when they were running a shrimp special, and even remembered us when we came back! I walked over because of the big Texicano bowl with grilled shrimp sign and ordered it. When my beeper went off I was handed chicken. When I told him I ordered shrimp he said no you didn't. You ordered chicken. Then he showed me the ticket. I pointed at the sign and him know that's why I came to that cart. He said well I don't have shrimp. Then he turned around. The bowl is decent. I'd say 6/10. However I am giving it a one star because customer service is terrible. read more

I came here the other day when we were at Hawthorne Asylum for lunch and the place was absolutely amazing. I ordered the chicken tacos with rice and beans. These are absolutely incredible. I come here often, (at least over a year, maybe two) and both of the last times I've visited the carne asada was not fresh at all and tasted off the first day. The first time I noticed this I'd ordered a bowl I didnt finish and within a day or two in the fridge the meat had developed a pink slimy film on it. Tossed it and thought it was a one-off. I came back and ordered the bowl again, this time I could tell immediately the meat was going bad. It was pale and tasted sour. I tried to eat some of it and ended up tossing the rest and glad I did. My stomach was cramping and felt sick the next morning. This place used to be so good, I hope they stop using old meat and go back to handling food properly. read more

I'll start by saying this probably sits at a 3.5 star review but Yelp does not give that option so going to have to pick here. We got the El Filette Sandwich with a side of fries for $16. Sandwich fell apart a little easily so maybe best to bring a burger holder with you. Taste was good but not necessarily next level either. One thing I will say though is that the Carne Asada comes in strips so it can be a bit challenging to avoid getting big chunks in some bites, no meat in others. Fries were good and we ate them all. Next time I'll try the tacos and update if this is a 4 or 3 but for now I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and lean 4. read more

Skirt steak. Need I say more? As far as I know, this is the first truly Tex-Mex place in Portland. There are plenty of hole in the wall Mexican spots all around this town and I'm a big fan of several of them, but the newest cart down at the Hawthorne Asylum on 11th and Madison is food you should eat. Back to the beginning. the Filette sandwich is skirt steak marinated with veggies and sauce on a bun, I got it with the seasoned fries that they offer. They do not skimp on the meat or the fries. They have chicken options, wings, bowls and tacos as well. I know I want to try more, and at the Asylum there is a never ending way to satisfy your appetite. If that skirt steak was the gateway to get me to eat at Texicano, I can only imagine how good the rest of the menu is. Support local, I'll be eating there again....soon. Enjoy. read more

I don't often get to this part of town but I had heard some wonderful things about this food cart so I decided to take my family there and we were delighted by the food! There are a gazillion chicken sandos and tacos everywhere in Portland but these stood out. We had the tacos, Loco Pollo and the Carne Asada sandwiches. Hours are all over the place, says it closes at 10pm on google, 8pm on yelp and 9pm on the phone (when they answer). So when we try to order online, it's off. Try to order through the phone, but 99% of the time they don't answer. When they did answer, we barely got a response if they were still taking orders at 8:15. Did you know there's a 10' gnome at an apartment complex in Beaverton? Anyway, I digress. For some reason, we have never been to the Hawthorne Asylum food carts. So we decided we'd head there after exploring. I love me some Mexican food. I know this is more Tex Mex, but dang, it's good. I was actually going to order somewhere else, but my kid wanted to eat here. So while he was ordering, the carne asada spoke to me. And I couldn't ignore it. So I ordered the carne asada sandwich. It's an okay price until you realize it doesn't come with a side. Doh. Oh well. The carne asada was sooo flavorful! Seriously, it was delicious. My son ordered a chicken bowl and loved it as well. The chicken was so tasty, and his bowl was filled to the brim with goodness. He really liked it and was only able to eat half of it. After a morning of hiking waterfalls I was ravenous and our tour guide had suggested checking out the food carts at Hawthorne Asylum. I got a Texicano bowl with skirt steak and added guacamole. For $17 I was expecting a hearty bowl filled with steak and guac. What I got was a bowl that was mostly filled with rice and beans, some grilled veggies, a few pieces of steak, pico de gallo and the smallest containers of guac and salsa that I've ever seen. It was some kind of tacos with 2 tortillas, 1 soft 1 crispy, & then delicious toppings & your meat of choice (I had chicken). It was hot, fresh, flavorful, & very unique! I'm a harsh critic of Mexican food since it's literally my culture, and this place is quite good. It's not traditional Mexican from Mexico so if that's what you're looking for, this may not be it.
