Coming here for a birthday lunch was the best! We had a slightly larger group and they were able to accommodate us by piecing together tables and we had an incredible time! To start off, the waitstaff showed us the drinks so we could take our time with the menu. Our server asked if our party had any restrictions and made sure to inform us if any of the food items we chose had it or if a particular dish would be fish sauce heavy. The zabb hang here is so good it reminds me of cao lau from Vietnam. It's a perfect mix of sour and savory with the noodles being a bit bouncy. The Kaprow stewed beef was a bit spicy but manageable. We had a reservation for a weeknight and were seated as soon as we arrived. It's nice to have another nice Thai option in the UES with some menu items that are a little different from your "typical Thai" restaurant menu. We ordered the Sai-ua Spring rolls to start. The thai herbs really came across nicely with this dish and the rolls were nice and crispy. We also had the Yum Som O pomelo salad, which is probably not something I would typically order but it was really delicious if you like a subtle mix of sweet and savory. For the entrees we shared the Zabb Hang (dried noodles), crab fried rice lava, and a seasonal duck lychee curry. All of these dishes were really great, although the portions were on the smaller side. I came here because I saw a lot of good reviews and probably the hype because of social media. We easily got a table for Thursday night for three people. The corn salad special didn't have much flavor. Corn was put in and poured dressing on top, no marinating. We got the grilled branzino that was recommended. Unfortunately it was dry. The sauces that came with it were great and helped with the dryness. The crab lava rice was also recommended but that was also dry. My favorite restaurant in the Upper East Side. Wow. Delicious Thai food. I started off with Tod Mun Goong as an app which were these like shrimp cake things, very tasty and fun! For my entree, I had Chicken Khao Soi, it a coconut curry noodle soup with chicken which actually healed my soul. There's so many other things I want to try on the menu. I would rate this a 4.5/5, but rounded up. Imo Tha Phraya reminds me of Soothr (in terms of food quality) but with a much better ambiance (much easier to get in, more spacious, less crowded, etc). Crab fried lava rice was yummy (if a bit pricey) and they gave me as much sauce as I wanted. Also went for restaurant week and the soft shell crab karee was excellent (crab was perfectly fried and so soft, flavor was great; really wish this was on their regular menu). Pork cheek and pomelo salad appetizers both decent. They have one of the better mango sticky rice desserts in the city here, so highly recommend ordering if it's in season! I also liked their Thai iced tea ice cream but kind of wish it didn't come with the accompanying jelly/corn. I've come to this restaurant twice before -- once alone and was seated immediately on a friday night, and another time with my friends and was seated within 20 min on a saturday. the interior of this restaurant is extremely put together. it's dark, but there are light fixtures decorated throughout, with the bar being the main show. the place is loud with all the talks of other groups, but eventually you don't notice it. my favorite dish from here has got to be the beef ka prow. the stewed beef is incredibly tender, and it packs a slight kick. the nice, soft bed of rice underneath soaks up the sauce from the beef, making it a perfect base for the dish. I've tried a few other dishes, like the seafood pad kee mao and duck curry. the pad kee mao was tasty, but I couldn't taste the usual spice and flavor of a typical pad kee mao. this dish was definitely overpowered by a seafood taste. the duck curry had a very savory and sweet flavor to the sauce. the duck itself was soft, but the skin was difficult to cut into. overall, it is slightly pricy, but the dishes are worth it. read more

When I heard rumors swirling about a contender for the best Thai food in NYC being on the Upper East Side, I quickly dismissed it. Everyone knows the Upper East Side is traditionally the culinary desert of Manhattan. However, I looked up Tha Phraya and it has 4.9 stars on 867 reviews on Google Maps. I was SHOCKED. Those are first team All NBA numbers. I made the trek from the East Village to the Upper East Side with my big bro. Whenever my big bro and I go out to eat together, it's biblical. He's the one friend who can eat as much as me. Together we consume the amount of food of 4-5 average civilians. When we walked in, I turned to him and said "are they Soothr's sister restaurant?" as the vibe in here felt like an alternate universe Soothr. It turns out the co-owner, Manna Che, previously worked there. I knew I was in good hands. We sat down and debated over the menu like it was the Declaration of Independence. After some strong deliberation and civil discourse, and with the help of our waitress, we decided on the following: Miang-Kham, Chicken Wings, Beef Pad See Iew, Pad-Ka-Prow, Paloh Hang (carmelized pork belly), Crispy Whole Branzino, Chicken Khao Soi, and the Crab Fried Rice. A FEAST! We are only 31 days into the year, but this is the best meal I've had this year and it's not close. I normally highlight 1 or 2 dishes and really dig into what made them great, but almost EVERYTHING was "the one." The only dish I could have done without was the Miang-Kham, as I didn't love the texture of the betel leaves, but that's a personal preference. This ain't no Chalong Thai, but it's in the ballpark--which is more than I can say for most of the city's Thai restaurants. We started with the Sai-ua Spring Rolls, which were crispy and savory. The Nam Tok Moo hit home in that way that only boat noodles and broth can. The Crab Fried Rice Lava was one of the best ones I've had, with plenty of juicy fresh crab meat to satisfy my aquatic cravings. I went to Tha Phraya for lunch and enjoyed a delicious lunch meal. I ordered the Pad Khee-Mao part of the lunch special included a spring roll. I also ordered a Thai iced coffee. It was cute inside and it was clean including their bathroom. The service was excellent they were busy with people having lunch. The food came out pretty quick. I asked the waiter if they can make my dish mild instead of medium on the spicy level and they were able to accommodate that request for me which I greatly appreciated. Been here several times now and only now getting to write a review. Recently recognized with a Michelin Bib in 2024, I was actually kind of surprised. First of all as far as affordability goes I think a lot of places don't really meet what I consider affordable when Michelin does, but I suppose it's relative to the Michelin star places. Even still you're paying 25-30 for an entree. I grew up near Little Thailand and my expectations for Thai food are very high. My issue with Thai spots in the city often forego authenticity and flavor for a higher price tag. Though the rent is higher and this is somewhat similar, I've come to the conclusion that this spot is doing a service to Manhattan and ESPECIALLY the food desert that is UES. First of all it is actually authentic with a sleek modern vibe. The food is solid - but def not the best Thai food in NYC by far, but still solid/quite good. Crab Lava Rice - one of their unique items, although the crab flavor I would've liked run through the rice more and more sauce. Pad See Ew - was pretty good as far as these go, and I use this as my standard for how good a Thai place does their "classic" dishes. Chewy noodles, good sauce, though the chicken could be more tender Spring Rolls - even tho there's no sauce these meat filled spring rolls are actually quite delicious ! I recommend these which have a gentle heat and nice tender meat interior and great crunch. Luckily, there was one open seat at the bar, and I was seated immediately. Walking in and first sitting down, the interior had a cozy feel. The seating at Tha Phraya is very crowded, but this did not take away from the overall experience as I was not with a group. As it was a spontaneous visit, I was not familiar with the menu. Still, the waiter was extremely helpful and patient with me and offered suggestions based on my taste preferences. To start, I had the Miang-Kham, which was a very refreshing and interactive plate. The dish consists of essential Thai aromatics (ginger, lime, dried shrimp, coconut, shallots, and sliced chili pepper), as well as a small serving of what I believe was a plum sauce -- altogether culminating inside of the leaf wrapper like a bomb of diverse flavor -- spicy, sweet, sour, salty. For the main course, I went with the Panang Nuea. I was initially eyeing the Paloh Hang, but I decided to try something different. When I visit Tha Phraya again I will try an item from their featured menu. I first noticed the layer of oil that had separated at the top of the bowl from the rest of the dish, but after the first bite, I kept digging in. This is now my favorite Thai spot in NYC, a close second would be Thai Diner. My favorite dish was the duck breast curry with lychee!!! The curry was so flavorful and had a little bit of a kick, but not so much that I was dying. Also really loved the crab fried rice lava -- it comes with this amazing green sauce that I want to pour all over everything. We also got the crab curry "Kang Pu" which came with vermicelli for you to pour the curry over them. Loved every dish. The spring rolls were highly recommended by our server Chris and he was SO right!!! So flavorful. I've never had spring rolls like these before. Curry puffs were good as usual (comes in 3). This is probably my new favorite thai restaurant in NYC. I was so stuffed after eating at other restaurants that I was thinking if skipping this, however last minute I thought I just try it. I ordered pad kee mow, aka drunken noodles, on the lunch menu, wow, it was so flavourful, light that I could still finish it all by myself when I was stuffed like a turkey. One of the more interesting options in the UES, Tha Phraya features one of the better Thai options in Manhattan, with a fairly traditional Thai dishes that don't seem to focus on any specific region. We tried the pomelo salad, a personal favorite of mine, which was nice and refreshing. A good balance of salty and sweet. The crab fried rice was a natural crowd pleaser with a runny omelette and lumps of crab served on top. The boat noodles, sort of a Thai version of pho, ended up being the best thing we ordered. We liked it the first time around. The food was different from the usual run of the mill Thai fare and flavorful. This time around though it was quite disappointing and the soft shell crab was greasy and tasteless. The crab fried rice was also mushy and over priced with a few pieces of crab strewn over the pasty orange rice. The pork belly was decent. Since they are packing it in their attitude is also quite negative and they were downright hostile today when we asked for another table as they were trying to squeeze in the three of us into a table for two. So overall it was an unpleasant dinner experience for us tonight and I doubt we'll be going back anytime soon. One of the best thai places I've been to in the city. We had a bunch of shared dishes including the hot and sour fish, pork cheek, chive dumplings, and spring rolls. Each one had a nice surprise that is unique and different from what you would think of in a traditional spring roll or traditional chive dumpling for example.
