This was a super enjoyable omakase experience. I came for lunch with a friend and got the deluxe set (standard is $49 + $10 for wagyu course). The fish was all delicious and all had some kind of unique topping, and some were also torched. Each piece was truly one bite and I preferred this to the bigger nigiri that eats more messily. Typically at sushi places I stick to salmon, tuna, and yellowtail, so I had some reservations about whether I would like everything, but really everything was tasty. Some of my favorites were the appetizer yuzu yellowtail with microgreens, and then amberjack (who knew!). The wagyu had a truffle topping and it was a great piece but I am not sure it was necessary and next time would probably just opt for the standard classic set. The waitress was very friendly and the chefs checked in throughout the meal and seemed to care that we were enjoying the nigiri. A few times we were asked if we wanted add on ons (drinks, and then sushi add ons later). I would have preferred if the menu was just maybe left without explicit solicitations to order more. But other than that not sure anything could have been better. The restaurant is simple, understated, and minimalist. Though right on a busy street the outside is so narrow and understated that it would be easy to walk by every day and miss this place. We made reservations for the lunch omakase (got the one with Wagyu so it was about $59) - there is a $10 add lunch special if you get a beer or sake (my husband got the orion beer). There were around 9 courses and then we got the waygu piece bc we picked the $58 omakase - otherwise it is $49 for the 9 pieces. I think there are other places that def give you more pieces for the price. The appetizer was monkfish liver with some salad - the monkfish liver was okay - def needed the sauce otherwise it would have been dry. I enjoyed the king salmon and otoro pieces. One Bite is probably one of our favorite omakase restaurants on the UWS, still. But we can't be as gung ho about it as we were when it first opened. The attention to rice has diminished precipitously. Temperature, compression and seasoning are not attended to with the same care as it was when the place first opened. It's not at all bad for a mid-tier restaurant -- just not excellent as it once was. At a recent lunch and dinner, shari (sushi rice) was too cold -- cooler than room temperature -- and overly compressed. It did not dissolve upon contact the tongue as it ought. (I like to eat nigiri sideways in these cases.) At recent omakse meals, there were far more pieces that were heavily Americanized than there used to be (think salmon with aoli). Solid lunch omakase that hits the sweet spot for quality and portion size. The New Zealand king salmon was exceptional. Stopped by this place because of the good reviews! First impression, sushi chefs are going through pre-cut fish on a board and throwing various pieces off to the side. Not a great sign. Nomz: Started with the trio starter - found a fish bone in one of them. If you know sushi - that's a very bad sign and was a turnoff to us. Rice ratio was off in the nigiri - very inconsistent from piece to piece. Lots and lots of torching happening at this place - which as a purist - always makes me die a little inside. Drinks: Tried two sakes - loved the sake carafe - super modern and practical. Service: Chefs didn't engage much - which is fine just noting it. Overall, felt disorganized from the beginning and that set the mood. Ambiance: Small, but typical for these sushi spots popping up. Nope or Dope: Nope, lots of misses at this place. The chokehold this place has on me is unreal. I've been here 4 times in the last 6 months, most recently last night, and I'm already trying to come up with another excuse to come back. It's a cute little place with limited seating so I'd recommend making a reservation. The staff! Everyone is genuinely SO NICE and so ready to make your experience special. Last month, I came for my birthday, my party of 6 was loud and crazy (the sake was flowing! I'm sorry, I feel so bad!), and the staff just vibed with us. The chef made us a special piece and blew gold dust all over it, and then they turned on a rap song super loud when bringing out my cake. It was a Monday. It was amazing. And the food, good lord, the food! This is one of the best omakase experiences I've had, and I've been all over the world, including Japan. Every piece is delicious. The little toppings and sauces are well thought out. I'm not a fancy food critic so I can't describe it all properly but please believe me when I tell you everything was YUMMY and well worth the price of admission. Highly, highly recommend. Echoing all the other reviews by saying this was one of the best meals I've ever had as well! The fish was amazing, the RICE was amazing. You hear about sushi chefs having to train for years to get the rice right. Until now I haven't quite understood why that would be, but NOW I DO. Going forth I probably won't be able to enjoy "regular" sushi again. Service was extraordinary; there were 3 sushi chefs serving a full house (12 seats I believe?) with one of the chefs serving only my party of three. The host was fully present as well but not obtrusive to make sure we were taken care of. Seating is just at the sushi counter, but you don't feel crowded. Hands down the best omakase on the UWS. We have been probably 5 times and each time it's exceptional. Amazing food, great sake options, and it is SO reasonably priced. It's intimate sushi counter seating makes it perfect for a date, but it's so relaxed and inviting it's a place you can frequent without having to wait solely for special events. Awesome lunch omakase! $50/person for 9 pieces (including a small app and hand roll). It's very close to the American Natural History Museum. It's easy to get a lunch resy at the 10 (12?) seater counter. The space is limited but is well decorated. The waiter and chef provided excellent service in the small space. Each peace had a unique texture or flavor. I especially loved the Hokkaido Scallop, and Otoro. They even had amberjack and mackerel. I usually don't love mackerel but this one was so smooth. Was craving sushi after spending all day at AMNH. Found this place with great reviews and decided to give it a try. True omakase restaurant, they just have one menu and the set depends on lunch or dinner timing. The service as soon as you enter is great. There is just the sushi bar to sit at so very limited seating. I was glad to be seated as soon as I walked in. I did see that a lot of people had reservations. They personalized the reserved sign at the bar with the person's name which I thought was a nice personal touch. The chefs were friendly and efficient. They made, played and served each dish and explained what it was. It's quite intimate and fun. Each bite was better than the last. My favorite was the A5 Wagyu topped with uni, followed by kanpachi and then scallop. They were all delicious really. Right before the set is completed, they ask if you'd like anything a la carte. I did the kanpachi and Wagyu/uni. I asked the server for a semi-sweet recommendation for sake and they recommended Hyakumoku which paired well with the meal. It also went down very smoothly. The seafood was fresh and great quality, you could taste it. The chefs were very proud of the seafood from Hokkaido. We got seated at 2pm at the very end of the lunch window. Our 9 courses were expertly prepared in front of us. For lunch it's the fairly standard sushi items you would expect with many of them toasted with a small flame. My favorites were the king salmon with garlic aioli and the Japanese scallop with salt. The preparation had the right amount of wasabi and seasoning to enhance the fish. We also had the sake, served at a mildly cool temperature. I would definitely come back.
