This was an unexpected find: great Thai food in a strip mall next to a pizzeria! Everything was fresh & of fantastic quality (I never knew that the Thai iced coffee I'd been drinking was of poor quality until I tasted the iced coffee here). We ordered the crispy spring rolls but he brought us the fresh spring rolls, which are completely flavorless. Thankfully it came with a sweet & sour sauce or I would not have eaten a second piece. We were going to ask for our correct order but we were in a time crunch and I decided healthy is better, wish we asked for the correct order. My friend & I split a ginger shrimp stir fry. It was ok, I make it better at home. What was a bit annoying is that on Saturday's the only size available is the dinner portion, which would be fine if it was actually a dinner size portion. Easily the best Thai food I've had in Maine thus far. I ordered the crab rangoons and beef pad Thai. The rangoons blew me away. They were full of filling and were rich and creamy. I can't even fully describe how great they were - I don't think I've ever had rangoons this good. The pad Thai was also excellent. It wasn't dry and the flavor was great. A frequent takeout flyer of Thai9, I decided last night was the night to actually go sit down and eat, which I'm really glad I did. I'm going to make a pro's list, simply because I found no 'cons.' None. A miracle, I know. 1. The interior is bright, clean, stylish, and simple. Also, my own kitchen is painted blue and green so the validation that I have some sort of style was welcomed. 2. Massive water glasses. I drink a lot of water, what of it? 3. Our food was plated BEAUTIFULLY! We started with crab rangoons and steamed pork dumplings (both Chinese dishes, but whatever) and they were perfect. I had Veranda on Thursday and these dumplings were better. By far. Boyfriend raved about the crab. 4. Good allergy awareness. I have a peanut allergy and my boyfriend got beef Pad Thai with 'no peanuts.' Well. They forgot that part, BUT our very good server let us know what happened and that it was fixed, and that's the difference between life and death so HIGH FIVE! 5. They're consistent. I always get curry with tofu and it's always perfect. Bright. Colorful. Crisp veggies. Love it. 6. Cleanliness. Clean tables, clean floors, clean bathrooms. 7. Service! I have heard nothing but good things about this place. I'm not sure if it was an off-day or what, but I wish that had a better experience on my wife's and my July 3 lunchtime visit. Service is fast and staff is friendly. We were greeted warmly and seated right away. We ordered tempura vegetables, chicken pad thai, and chicken drunken noodles. Tempura veggies were very thick cuts, which meant they were raw and difficult to eat. Tempura batter was under seasoned. The chicken in both meals was overcooked/bone dry. Drunken noodles dish was good but noodles were undercooked and chewy. The pad thai was under seasoned. Given the reputation of the restaurant I was expecting better. There is better Thai food in the area than what I experienced. Bua Thai in Old Orchard Beach stands out as one. The biggest turn off, though, was a foul-mouthed customer sitting at the counter. Multiple F-bombs and other swearing loud enough to carry through the restaurant, including tables with small children. The next time my waitress came to the table, I mentioned it to her. Her response: "I know. He's had a couple of glasses of wine." i had to remind her that there are children in the restaurant. She said she'd speak with him. When she returned with the check she said, "We're going to talk to him when he's leaving." It appears that management would rather address problems after the fact instead of when the situation is occurring and actually affecting the dining experience for other guests. read more

Thai 9 is a hidden gem. It is over by Cabelas in Scarborough and I went with my guy last night. I am very critical of Thai food because I have had some on the best Thai food ever so I love good Thai. This place was actually very good and authentic, it was awesome. We got the calamari, dumplings, pad Thai and drunken noodle. The dumplings were very good but the calamari was excellent! A nice light batter and a delicious dipping sauce made for a great dish. The drunken noodle and pad Thai were both 2 stars but his drunken noodle was a lot spicier than mine. This is always my complaint at Thai restaurants actually. The star scale is almost never the same, usually 2 stars is what I like/can handle but I have been to restaurants where I can't barely eat a two star and others where a 2 star has basically no heat. So that would be my only complaint about Thai 9! Other than that, fantastic meal and great service. Will definitely be going back!! read more

Just ordered delivery from Thai 9 thru Uber Eats. Came quickly, outdoor drop off. No problems with delivery. The problem was they got half the order wrong. I ordered pad thai and pineapple fried rice with tofu. The pad thai was good, but I got only a 1 spice level. My fault. Next time I will get 3. They sent chicken fried rice instead of pineapple. I don't eat chicken so it was completely wasted. I am quarantined so I can't leave the house to bring it back. Very disappointing. read more

Thai Nine serves the very best tasting food in town! Its consistently delicious every time we go. Love the Crispy spring rolls, Crab Rangoon, Thai fried rice, Chicken Sataan, Mixed vegetables.... always brings us back. Just not satisfied with other restaurants when we travel and return to Thai Nine to readjust our palates once home. Food doesn't leave a "greasy spoon" taste like the meals served in some establishments in this area. Feel comfortably satisfied after a meal vs craving copious glasses of water. My family and I just moved to the area and we heard nothing but good things about this place. We stopped in for the first time tonight. The food was great, but the service was poor. Our server may have just been having an off day. She got upset with us when we kindly asked for a side of rice for our son because his chicken tempura meal came out with just the chicken. She avoided us for the rest of the evening. It wasn't even like the restaurant was full yet either. We do love the food and we will most likely be going back. My girlfriend and I got take out drunken noodles and yellow curry. Both were great, my girlfriend said the noodles were the best she'd had. When I got home with the bag, they'd forgotten to include the rice. I called and they were very apologetic. Here's the thing trying new places is a wonderful experience. Sometimes it works out beautifully and others just fall short. Unfortunately this was a falling short kinda time. To begin, it wasn't busy at all, a Saturday night around 5pm maybe that should have been my first clue. Next, it's Maine in the winter, heat is necessary, every single person in my party was freezing and when we asked about the heat they said it was broken but then it miraculously turned on. The service took a long time-not so much for the food to come out but for them to visit our table. The tofu dumplings were excellent. The curry was bad. It had an insane amount of onion peels in it, full on peanut shells, it wasn't very warm, a complete disappointment. My sister ordered her curry and specifically asked they they cut her vegetables into smaller pieces and that was not done and had to be sent back. In our time there several people complained of reviving the wrong orders or bad food. I cannot say as though I would ever return. read more

Thai 9 is our favorite spot for thai in the Portland area. Why it's not actually located in downtown Portland like it deserves is a mystery; a mini strip mall next to a Cabelas is the last place you'd expect to find food like this. I've been here maybe a dozen times in the past year, rarely ordering the same thing twice, and I've always enjoyed my meals, (thai iced tea, crab rangoons, spring rolls, tempura, satay, curry, fried rice, pad thai, kau gai, sweet & sour, cashew nut, etc). The presentation seems a step above other places as well. Last night my girlfriend's yellow curry chicken was a bit odd though. The chicken was tender and fell apart in your mouth, but it was kind of rubbery/squeaky? Just a strange consistency, like it had been marinading in coconut milk (maybe?) for too long. Also, the music is all over the place. One night it's Miley Cyrus and the top 40, the next it's Louis Armstrong and friends. Never know what you're going to get. The staff is very nice though. Reasonably priced as well, for how good the food is. If this place were closer to my work, I'd be there all the time. read more

Pretty decent spot in the plaza by Cabela's. The decor is nice and the staff is very friendly and efficient. I had the fresh rolls w/ chicken which consisted of two rice paper rolls that were then sliced into pieces. They were good and the veggies inside were fresh. The piece of chicken that was inside was pretty teeny tiny though. For an entree I had the basil chicken. The flavor was pretty good and the portion was modest. The spice level can be customized upon ordering and it was accurate to their scale. I wasn't blown away but it is definitely a decent option in the area that I would revisit. read more

Turned away by the manager today at 2:40 PM. Apparently could not be bothered to serve me at that time. Look at the hours on the door which stated that lunch service ended at three. So be aware that this restaurant is essentially closed from 3 PM to 4 PM and maybe even from a little bit earlier. I gave them two stars instead of one because I've been here before and the food is actually pretty good. I think there is also a major problem with language barrier with this manager. Absolutely horrible. The host was the sole waitstaff, and I'd guess he was the cook as well, the way he was running around. He was incredibly difficult to understand; had to repeat himself several times before we understood what he was saying. To top it all off, the food was terrible! My husband got the pad Thai with duck, and the duck meat was so dry it was in inedible strings. I'm weary of any place in a strip mall, but wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt. I was wrong.
