Stunning food from a decidedly unassuming venue. This place is tucked away so much that I when I arrived to meet friends, I thought it was closed. It's snuggled in beside the pizza place. I can only suggest that you find your way there. I tend not to differentiate food based on ethnicity, rather, I judge it on whether or not it's good food. What I got at Thai 9 was good food. No, it was great food. So few chefs these days really get the concept of layering flavors. This chef gets it. From the soup to the main course, the flavors were perfectly set up. This does not happen by accident. I don't know if this is a chef owner, but if it's not I suspect it will be. This was great food. There are a lot of options for Thai in the Portland area. That being said, I encourage everyone to drive a little out of the way and head over to Scarborough for some of the best Thai around. The ingredients are always fresh, and the service is very quick. I consider myself a big Thai fan, and will eat pretty much anything on the menu at a Thai restaurant. Curry, Thom Kha, noodles, you name it, I like it. The problem with Thai 9 is I find it very hard NOT to order one of the same two things: Pad Thai or Pineapple Fried Rice. If you go, you MUST try the Pineapple Fried Rice. I've tried duplicating it at home, but I have never succeeded. The balance of spices are perfect, the rice nice and fluffy, not too greasy. ANYHOW... Like I said, it's a bit of a drive if you live in Portland, but it is very well worth it. read more

My boyfriend and I decided to try this Thai restaurant since we just moved up here a week ago. They will ask you how hot you want your food and I went for 4 out of 5 for spiciness. I really enjoy great Thai food and make sure I try some every where I go. This place really surprised my taste buds because I was having Thai withdrawals ever since a few months ago. When I walked in, I was really glad to see how clean and inviting it is for a Thai restaurant. There was a bar area and plentiful seating. Aside from the look of the place, the portions are a great size for take out. I regret snapping a photo, but I finished everything in two days. I had the Spicy Basil Beef with Jasmine White Rice. The dish was perfect because it had the right amount of veggies and spicy basil to go with the rice. Go there for lunch or dinner because you won't regret it! read more

Went in on a quiet sunday afternoon and was pleasantly greeted by one of the owners of the restaurant. Sat down with my friend, I ordered the Pad Thai as I usually do at thai places, and my friend ordered the drunken noodle. Both of us were blown away by how good it was. My frined said his was the best drunken noodle he's ever had in his life and I compared my pad thai to that of the times I've had it fresh on the very beaches of thailand. Amazing. read more

This review is long overdue! Thai 9 is my go to Thai restaurant whenever I am in town. I travel to the area frequently for business and always make it a point to eat here. My all time favorite dish is the garlic chicken. It's sublime ... fresh veggies, tender chicken, and the lightest, most flavorful garlic sauce ever!!!! Can't find anything as good in the Boston area. YUMMY! What a gorgeous place inside. It just moved from one side of the mall to the other so the fireworks place could move in. The color they painted the inside a really nice green is really gorgeous. The table and chairs make this place super classy. The food is really fresh and absolutely delicious. My Husband and I both had the pad thai. It came with big chunks of chicken and shrimp. Very delicious. We started with some Satay Chicken On A Stick with peanut sauce and it was so flavorful and really fresh. We cannot wait to go back to this place. It was packed on a Friday night, too. Soup was good but tepid and very small. Spring rolls basically lettuce, not much flavor. Stir fried rice was excellent. My suggestion is to skip the appetizers and soups, the main dishes are very good. Service excellent, could use some decor help. read more

My wife and I LOVE good Thai food so when we saw this restaurant near Cabelas we checked Yelp (of course) to find the reviews pretty good. We ate there for lunch and ordered off of the lunch menu. The atmosphere was very pleasing and quite modern. Not your traditional Thai motif but more like a modern restaurant. The place had quite a few patrons but the waiter was very pleasant and efficient. My wife had the Drunken Noodles and I had Red Curry. The meal came within a few minutes which is not unusal as it takes little time to prepare from pre-prepped ingredients. The meal was very good; not great but we might be a little more critical since we have eaten at so many Thai places. The only reason we gave it 4 stars is because of the portion size. We both felt wanting after the plate was empty. I realize that the plate was only $8 each but we have had greater helpings at less cost for lunches elsewhere. Overall we both recommend this establishment. You will certainly be happier eating there than Famous Dave's across the street! read more

My friend and I arrived a little after 2pm on a Monday. The place was deserted. We decided to go anyway. I was pleasantly surprised by the interior. The decorations and surroundings were subtle, soothing and at the same time upscale-urban (if there is such a thing) We ordered an appetizer and 2 entres and were delighted with all of our choices. Had dinner here and found it to be a charming little place. Not many tables in the restaurant, but the place was full and doing some brisk take out orders. Even with one man staffing both the take-out and sit in clients I found service to be punctual and you never felt like you were forgotten. I ordered the Pineapple Fried Rice with Pork as well as a Thai Iced Tea and found them both to be lovely. The Fried Rice was delicious with the right amount of heat and curry to it. The Cashews in the dish added another great flavor to the whole ensemble. The Pork was the real winner though, deliciously marinated yet very tender; I could have just eaten a plate of that alone! The sweetness of the Iced Tea balanced out the spice of the dish, it made for a wonderful combo. I'm really impressed with the place, I will have to try take out from there some time. read more

Excellent Thai next to Cabela's - who knew. When was the last time you could truthfully say that there is just as much mixed seafood in your Pad Thai as noodles, maybe more? Food: Excellent taste, lots of seafood/meat/poultry, very nice presentation. Protein and vegetables always fresh and plentiful. Very good vegetarian options if that is what you need. People: Nice, friendly, extremely competent, care (and remember who you are and what you ordered last time you were in if you are consistent at all). Atmosphere: Clean and nothing fancy, so you can come as you are and be comfortable. Work near Veranda and do not live all that close to Thai 9, but will make the trip every time. If you eat here, you will not be disappointed. There is a lot of Thai in and around Portland. It is hard to stand out. Thai 9 does. read more

Really really really really good food. The owner and staff really care about every customer Thai food experience. I know the owner personally and I know firsthand that his dedication on improving his culinary skills is second to NONE! I'm so admired by his inspiration to create new dishes. The first time he cooked me his Chicken Satay, he said that it's the best in the world and boy he wasn't LYING! It's the most tender chicken and it melts in your mouth. The peanut sauce has the peanut chunks in them. Another thing that separates this place from other Thai restaurants is their attention to detail because they make sure each plate is presented beautifully. We like Thai food, so while looking at reviews on Yelp came across Thai 9. Went for lunch and we were so very pleased with our choice. A small cozy place, but beautifully furnished and gave us a comfortable feeling. Now, for the food, they gave us complimentary pot stickers first and they were great. Next we ordered Crab Rangoon, great also. We then shared pineapple fried rice w/ shrimp and Massaman curry w/shrimp. We have never had the curry, but it was delicious, as was the fried rice. Wife says we have a new favorite Thai restaurant, and I totally agree. We met the owner/chef and he was very pleasant as were the servers. A very nice experience in all. read more

Last night was my first Thai 9 experience. My friend from work recommended it to me, and since I recently moved to Scarborough, I wanted to try it out! I called around 8:30pm to place a delivery order (thinking they would deliver it to my house and my boyfriend would receive it). I was told that they weren't doing delivery that night, and since I work until 9pm in Portland (they close at 9pm) I figured I was out of luck. I told the woman that I worked until 9pm and wouldn't be able to pick it up but thanked her anyway. To my amazement, the woman said she would stay open until I got there, no problem at all. So I arrived at 9:15pm and there she was at the front door. She greeted me with my warm food and a smile on her face. She wasn't bitter or annoyed at all. And to top it all off, the food was delicious. We ordered the pork rolls, pad thai, cashew nut stir fry, and drunken noodle. The food was great and didn't have that bright orange, chemical looking grease covering it like a lot of Thai food I have experienced. Although this review is more about their customer service, I cannot recommend Thai 9 enough. I will definitely be going back again soon. read more
