We discovered Thai Basil on Yelp when we were looking for a restaurant that had both Orange Chicken AND Pineapple fried rice. Not surprising that only one place comes up in Visalia with such a weird combination of picky-eater desires. Anyway, it's a tiny place in a strip mall near the 198. I was thoroughly impressed with the quality of the food and the service. It was a fairly busy Monday night, which is always a good sign because Mondays don't tend to be popular dine-out nights. All but two tables were occupied. We ordered the above-mentioned fruit-infused entrees, along with a papaya salad and a pad see ew. The food was delicious! (And I eat a lot of Thai food.) The spicy-meter was right on. Medium spicy really tasted like medium-spicy as opposed to the bland-medium that a lot of restaurants have had to tune to. The papaya salad was AMAZING. So refreshing and spicy. The pad see ew was also delicious, but a little light on the broccoli. Surprisingly, I even enjoyed my companion's pineapple fried rice. The orange chicken was tasty, but a little heavy on the batter. Prices are reasonable, although there's no concession for when you order a dish priced with meat in it with no meat. I got takeout here today, because I've been wanting some good Thai food and the reviews seemed pretty good. It was okay, nothing spectacular. The service was great, but he food was just missing something. I ordered the yellow curry with chicken, and like someone previously mentioned, it was pretty watery. I'm used to it being thicker with maybe more coconut milk. The taste was going in the right direction, but it was definitely not the best I've ever had. Maybe a tad below average to be honest. I also got pad thai with chicken, and it was good but a little on the sweet side. I'm used to having it a little more savory, but I liked it a lot more than the curry. My wife and I spent a decade in SF before returning back to Visalia, and had a couple of favorite Thai places in the city we have really missed. When we saw several reviews comparing this place as an equal in taste/quality to others in larger metro areas, we were excited to give it a try. What a dissapointment. Bland, boring food. We ordered several dishes ranging in spice factor and wound up tossing most of it in disgust. The noodles tasted like they came out of a box with a packet of spices you sprinkle in, the beef in the broccoli beef was grainy and tastless, and the cashew nut chicken was essentially boiled chicken with some nuts tossed in. The "Thai dumplings" were so dull the dog fell asleep after we gave her one. Sorry Visalia, but this isn't the Thai restaurant that's going to remind you of the one in the town where you went to college. read more

Great food. Horrendously slow service. The slow service unfortunately outweighs the benefits of the great food. I would rate this 5 stars for takeout since service doesn't come into play. My wife and I have enjoyed coming to Thai Basil for years. However the last handful of times we have gone the service has been terribly slow. After 55 minutes of ordering my wife finally received her soup. It was well over an hour (I gave up looking at my watch)) before ever getting our pad thai and chow mein. Awful! No need to eat after dealing with arrogant man there. We don't need to put up with his demeanor! There are several other locations with great food and service (or I can always cook at home) instead of being put through his mistreatments. He needs to realize that he needs customers more than customers need him! The male there, must be a manager/ relative of the owner needs to have at least some manners and respect. I say this after his foolish attitude when we pointed out about the length of wait time for our appetizer to-go order. A couple who came in after us had their appetizer orders a long time before ours! (We used to like their food but not after this highly unpleasant visit and extremely rude and arrogant customer service!) He raised his voice and rudely dismissed our valid concerns. After the unpleasant scene he made I told him we are not coming back and he eagerly yelled out "Don't come back!" Hah! He ought to know that we don't have to nor want to! By the way, there are many good restaurants we've been to for Thai or Vietnamese cuisine in town that have never given us a bad moment. Go instead to Davorns, Pho King, Asia Paradise in Farmersville, Pho N Seafood on Court St., Keothip, or any of the so many other options- much better than putting up with long wait time and arrogance. The food at this place is awesome. You have got to go and eat there. But get there as soon as is opens at 5:00pm because there is very little seating and it fills up soon. once you get a seat the atmosphere is traditional thai cultare all over including elephant salt and pepper shakers. But it's not at all tacky. The menu has a wide variety. The only thing is that it was a bit pricey. The orange chicken is extremley light and juicey. The different culture adds a little bit lighter blend of flavors vs. thick sauses and spicy fixes. I will definintley be going back. read more

I came here because my sister had told me they had the best steak salad. I came the other night and service was great. The women working were very nice. The issue I had was that EVERYTHING WAS SWEET. My fiancé and I ordered potstickers, tum yum, steak salad and pad se ew. I'm the best thing was the potstickers. The tum yum was overly sweet. The steak salad was sweet and beef was terribly hard to chew to the point where I had a headache half way through and didn't even bother finishing it. The pad se ew was, you guessed it, sweet. I have been to every Thai place is Visalia and Thai Basil is by far my favorite. I love their chicken pad Thai and also get the fresh spring rolls with shrimp for an appetizer. And I cannot forget the mango and sweet rice for dessert! It is to die for and the best in Visalia! It is a little pricey but I usually get all of the above and share it with someone else plus some leftovers. Their lunch specials are very reasonable as well. I only wish they were open longer hours and on Sunday so I could eat there more often! Lol read more

I dropped by because I was craving some Thai green curry and Pad Thai, however, other Thai restaurants in town that I usually go to were closed on Monday and so I gave Thai Basil a try. I ordered an order of chicken egg rolls, Green Thai Chicken Curry, Shrimp Pad Thai, and steamed rice. The egg rolls were dry, but edible; nothing spectacular. The Green Thai Chicken Curry came out looking water down and it tasted water down. The vegetables in the curry sauce had a crunch to them as they were not cooked in the curry sauce long enough for them to be tender. The Pad Thai was okay. All in all the food at Thai Basil was decent, but I would not call it authentic nor would I say it left me wanting to return for another round. read more

Whenever I think about their fried calamari my mouth starts watering :) If you ever had a stuffy nose come here and get the spicy pho and you'll clear right up, probably for the whole week :) I usually get a medium Pho to go, prices are outrageous value. Why get processed fast food if you can get fresh reasonably quick food for the same price!? The lunch crowd gets busy here though. Best Thai food I've had in a LONG time! Waitress' were very friendly, setting was intimate. A little awkward though if busy, because there is just a little partition separating you from guests waiting to be seated, the place is pretty small. Their thai iced tea is so good! I had the Pad Thai and thought it was like eating paste. The colorless glop of crap they stuck before me was something I'd expect from a kindergarten craft class. We waited about a half hour for a seat, by which point we were definitely starving. I totally understand if it is busy that you may need to wait a while- fine- however, after placing our order we waited roughly another TWO HOURS watching as SLOWLY table by table was served. My girlfriend really wanted to leave, and I couldn't blame her, but there isn't much Thai food in the area and I was craving it, plus once you've waited an hour and a half...you might as well wait a bit longer to finally get what you've been waiting so long for! I felt bad for the waitress because it's not her fault the place isn't better staffed. That said, I was greatly disappointed and kind of appalled that not once did the waitress or other employee (who I think I might be the manager or owner?) apologize for the insanely long wait time. No apology or discount was offered for our patience, the customers who continued to walk in were not even so much as warned that it might be another two hours before they would actually get to eat. Possibly the worst dine in experience I've had. Wildly unfortunate since the food is good- but how can you expect to hold onto customers if you can't even courteously acknowledge the long wait time or the lack of staffing. read more
