Oh boy. I've tried this place twice recently, and no no no. First time was a couple weeks ago when my family had bought us lunch to go from here. I ordered the chicken as I normally would get when going to a Thai BBQ restaurant, and I was excited to have some really good Thai food. The lunch meal came with the main entree, fried rice and a salad. The salad dressing was super watery.. and just dripped off the lettuce. Made it seem like when you're out of dressing, so you add water and shake it. Was runny, had no taste and no consistency. The fried rice was ok. It was hot, not dry, but not flavorful either. Now the chicken.. I've come to love that Thai BBQ taste, but the chicken skin didn't have that saw char look/taste as it would. The chicken itself was a little slimy as well. Made it seem like it was undercooked so I didn't really eat it. We ended up deciding to eat in here since it was near an event we had just finished. People wanted some good Thai Food, and this one was less than 1/2 mile away. I did not know at that time that this was the same location my family had bought lunch from two weeks prior. Walking in the restaurant, I could see that it is definitely outdated. When they say 'Original' Thai BBQ, they mean it. The interior looked like it was from the 80's. Maybe the tears on the booth seats gave it away? They are definitely in need of an update. As for the food, I did not get the chicken as I was skeptical from my last experience. I got my 2nd choice, which was the garlic spare ribs and white rice. Again, no no no. These spare ribs were so hard and dry the sauces couldn't even seep through it to help out. The white rice was so dry I just couldn't. I had to inform the lady who was serving us to change it to the fried rice. She had the audacity to roll her eyes. We've been going here for 10+ years since it's so close to us and it's a small mom and pop business that we supported and got some cheap, yummy eats at. I believe, like other Yelpers have reported, that the management has changed, thus the flavor and quality, and in turn, the price points have changed. We got the pad see ew, orange chicken, and fried rice to go and it was all sub par. Pad see ew beef was dry and chewy and we didn't get that much of it either. The orange chicken wasn't sauced evenly and the sauce was quite salty with the chicken also being dry. Fried rice was unappealing, all of the protein was also dry and the broccoli wasn't the best quality either. First, this place has been here for YEARS, which is a testiment of their good food. All of the dishes we've tried all the times we've gone has been amazing. Our favorites are S1 (Bbq chicken plate served with shrimp fried rice and a sweet sauce for dipping,) and the beef satay which is served with a peanut sauce. The portions are big and the flavor is consistently the same... delicious. Oop, cant forget about their shrimp tom kha soup... mmmm. I am so happy I did. nice cozy, clean restaurant. wonderful staff, and a pretty great menu. I ordered the combination soup with chicken and shrimp and a side of rice, small cucumber cup. We usually order from here on special occasions (Mostly Birthdays and some anniversaries). Service is always quick, unless it's a busy time. The ambience is 90% of the time quiet. The portion sizes of the food is A LOT, LoL! I have never been hungry after eating Thai BBQ and Seafood. The orange rice (pictured) always hits! A West Covina staple! I've been going here with my family for several years now and I never get disappointed with the food nor the service. This time, I decided to show my partner what good Thai food was and we stopped by for a quick lunch! The restaurant was relatively empty but it had just opened so we got seated immediately. The waiter took our orders and the food came within 17 minutes of ordering. The Tom Kha soup came first and it was piping hot! Super milky and a bit sour, just the way I remembered it! The pad see ew was delectable as well, with the noodles having a perfect mix of sweet and salty. My favorite, the Thai bbq spare ribs that I always ask for a little more well done came out exactly as I asked for it and was tender and full of flavor, pairing nicely with the sweet honey sauce they usually give with the ribs. I'll never stop recommending people to this establishment and though I usually get the same thing here every time, I always get surprised on just how good the food is and how satisfying I feel after eating here. I've been a loyal customer of this franchise since the early 90s and have frequented this West Covina branch since it opened nearly 20 years ago. We've always loved the food, but the sanitation has hit an unacceptable low. It is stomach-turning to watch the staff use disposable gloves as a "permanent hand." This was not a one-time random occurrence. I have been back three separate times recently, and each time it was the same disgusting experience. I sat and watched as the staff handled cash and credit cards, wiped down dirty tables, and then immediately went back to plating food, all while wearing the exact same pair of dirty gloves. Gloves are supposed to be a sanitary barrier changed between tasks, not a way to transfer bacteria from the register and cleaning rags directly onto our plates. It is pure laziness and a total lack of management oversight. If they are this comfortable ignoring basic hygiene in plain sight of a 20-year regular, I'm terrified to think what's happening in the kitchen. After two decades, I'm done. I can't support a place that treats the health of its customers as an afterthought. read more

The huge glaring problem is the amount of protein they include in their orders, it was a f**king travesty. It's combination fried rice, it's supposed to have shrimp, chicken, beef, and pork in it. Let me tell you right now you're lucky to get a piece of anything in your spoon each time you scoop. Even the shrimp was small-medium size, and THERE WERE ONLY TWO. The damn thing was $18 menu price. There also were 2 cucumber slices, two tiny tomato chunks, and a bit of cilantro sprinkled on top. I think maybe a bit of onions too, I can't remember because it was so unnoticeable. No other vegetables. I don't typically exaggerate things and I'm doing my best not to this time, but it's clear that they're stuffing you with rice as filler, I tell you rice is 95% of the whole thing. Order at your peril. And yeah exact same story with the pad thai, I believe it cost $16. Out of the entire styrofoam box, 1-2 small spoons worth would be chicken, while the rest of the 2 pounds would be noodle. I kid you not it's like you ordered vegetarian plates and a bit of chicken accidentally spilled in. Even cheap ass eggs are rarely seen in there, I mean come on what are we even doing. So while I'm glad business has picked up, they kept parties waiting with very little acknowledgement. Came inside with a party of 8. And while I want to be understanding, the only other party waiting inside was a party of two. We ended up waiting for almost an hour for a table with very little acknowledgement. While some other customer was prioritized because he called 30 minutes AFTER our arrival when their whole party didn't even arrive yet. I do hope it improves. Because it was obvious our party wasn't the only one that was feeling the frustration. Thankfully, it seems a bit less for those already seated. The wait took a while for the food to come out and none of the servers really tried to check in with us for an update on it. As soon as the food was ready, it got to the wrong table. It's common for any server to make these types of mistakes especially since I've been a server once myself. But when the server fixed the mistake, there was no apology issued to us customers. OMG, I've passed this place by so many times and never knew that this place is the same ownership/chain restaurant as my all time favorite Thai restaurant named Thai Original BBQ, this restaurant doesn't have the "original" in the name, so never put 2 and 2 together, or had the urgency to try this place out. I've been trying different Thai restaurants all over West Covina/La Puente area for years searching for a place equivalent to the Thai Original BBQ restaurant........who knew? So I discovered this place, when I Yelped it and noticed that the menu was exactly the same as the other restaurants, can this be, I was so excited, couldn't wait to try it, keeping my fingers cross!! We phoned our order for pick up, so far no problems. We order two S-1, one S-2 (BBQ chicken & spare ribs dinners), also Pad Thai with shrimp and Pad see-ew with beef. After entering to pick up our order, the dinning area was a little outdated, but fairly clean, staffer was pretty nice and helpful. When we got home, I opened our Togo boxes and to my delight, it looked exactly like what I remember from the other restaurants and better yet, it tasted like the other restaurants that I loved. The BBQ chicken and spare ribs with their signature sweet Thai dipping sauce is one of the best, I have not found any other Thai restaurant that comes close to the quality of these particular dishes. Getting the usual S-1 (BBQ chicken with shrimp fried rice) and Pad Thai (seafood). I usually get them in L.A. side (3rd St.), but decided to give this location a try again (last time always take out only). I still enjoy the BBQ Chicken; but was a bit disappointed when one piece of the chicken was undercooked and overall temperature was kinda on the cold side. My family and I have been going to Thai BBQ in Cerritos for 35 years, but this review is for the West Covina location. The food is consistently good ! The prices are reasonable ! I was alarmed on how much service sucked ! There is a young Asian girl server with the braided hair did not give us our spring roll order. ( FYI , I'm Asian) I had to get her attention two times. A male server came after, and refilled our water and he was very nice. We had to hunt her down to get togo containers. She never apologized for her mistake. It appears she does not want to work there, and has zero customer service skills. I know it's hard to get good help but it's remarkable how she ever was hired to work with the public. For at least 2-years straight I have been lucky to be helped by MING! Ming is very helpful and was able to get my large order prepared in a timely and organized manner. Ming made the process easy and was very professional. Ming kept me updated as to when my oder would be ready so that I don't waste any time and the food was prepared nicely and tasted great!
