I almost always enjoy eating here. The food quality is consistent and the dining area is always very clean. However the restroom needs to be cleaned more often and restocked. My absolute favorite is the Galbi on the dinner menu that's honestly all I order for protein so I am not interested in the premium option. Most of the servers provide great or reasonably great service and when it's super busy they usually have someone helping them so they can keep providing great service. However I don't like being pressured to order premium and being told I need to get it. I am not sure if the restaurant is putting pressure on the servers to insist with the customer to order premium or if it was just the particular server Antonio. After declining twice I noticed the server Antonio behave in a different manner as if he was looking down on us, as if we were no longer worth serving. Throughout our dining experience we were consistently waiting for our meat and sides that we were only allowed to receive small portions of. I only like the cucumber and potato sides so I asked for double for my husband and I, especially because I know we will definitely finish and ask for more. The server told us he was only allowed to bring one of each or else he would get in trouble. We had to flag him down for a refill which took extremely long. I still remember the first time I tried Gen Korean BBQ. It was the Torrance location and overall, the dining experience left a positive impression on me. After Torrance, then it was the Alhambra location but stopped going as it was really crowded (and the floors were really slippery). That was many moons ago and there are a lot more AYCE Korean BBQ places now especially in the SGV but saw the Gen Korean BBQ gift cards at Costco and said, why not, it's been awhile. And, decided to give the West Covina location a shot. They were busy and glad they used the Yelp online wait list feature which helps. Still waited a bit after arrival but we got seated. They were busy and perhaps understaffed considering the long time it took for our server to take our orders as well as seeing how long it took to turn around tables when waiting for our table. More importantly, they ran out of many items like kim-chi fried rice, chap-che and both casseroles and it was only 8:30 pm. The food also seems less authentic now. The side dishes didn't have that spicyness and the marinated meats were too sweet so I suggest sticking to the non-marinated meats. Came in for lunch on a weekday and I would hate to come on a weekend. There were maybe 6-7 tables including us and somehow it felt like the whole place was packed the way the staff were running back and forth. Maybe it was because I was hungry, maybe even hangry, but am I the only one that gets a little irked if another party sits down 5-10 mins after you did but somehow they get all their banchans and waters to the table before we do? Not to mention the fact that we placed our order in first but the other party again was served first? Our server seemed swamped and I can tell she was trying her best to tend to every tables request for more of this and another order of whatever, but man.. there were a lot of wasted energy and food. We didn't ask for rice but they gave us two bowls, and when we asked for spoons she gave us forks. Brought the family out for dinner! We were seated within minutes of arriving by a friendly host and our server greeted us almost right away as well. We were a party of 6 so we tried not to overwhelm him with too much ordering at once but he welcomed our orders quickly and with ease. He also let us know about the dinner specials and let us compare pricing to see what would best fit our needs. I HIGHLY recommend doing the dinner specials which include the upgraded menu if anyone in your group is going to be drinking beer and/or have kids joining you. The vibe as always is chill and the music adds an extra spice too. The playlist is always so good! Their dinner rush was busy but even then our service was always quick. Now that there are more kbbq places that are authentic and accessible, we only really came to try here because it was very convenient for us. We came around 5:30pm for a Friday night dinner, and there was a good amount of people dining already. The restaurant doesn't seem that well ventilated either, so it's very smoky inside. Now getting settled inside, the interior of this place is quite nice. Their menu is very extensive, but also very extensive to the point that it's a bit overwhelming to choose items haha. I noticed there were a lot of Mexican inspired items like carne asada, al pastor, etc. so that's pretty interesting to see! Also noticing that we were the only Asians dining at this kbbq joint lol. Tasting the banchan, it didn't taste that fresh, especially the kimchi. We ordered a few rounds of beef. The brisket was surprisingly a small portion so we ordered several plates of it. It does shrivel up a lot, and you could tell that the quality of meat was very mediocre. We were also curious to try the squid steak? That can definitely pass. The bulgogi fried would also be a pass because the fries were too hard and the meat didn't really taste like bulgogi, just flavored meat. Every meat was a kinda disappointing, except for the galbi (marinated short rib). That one was actually pretty good and we should have only just gotten that. Honestly, the food here is very mid and not so much authentic to Korean bbq culture. But lunch items like beef brisket, side dishes, salad would come out fast. Special items like beef fingers or short rib would take over 30 minutes. We would order and the waiter would bring two pieces of short rib (6 bones) after half an hour of waiting. All the tables were waiting. Meanwhile you would see a cluster of waiters on the side just chatting with each other. All the initial food on first ordering came fast but everything else thereafter did not. And yet they kept mindlessly changing the grill even if there was nothing cooking. It's almost like they're told to follow an algorithm and not serve as much after a set time so you get full faster. My husband and I came here for lunch, but because it was a state holiday, we were charged dinner prices, which already didn't feel great going in. Unfortunately, the experience only went downhill from there. Service was exceptionally slow. Our server would disappear for long stretches, and when she did stop by, she rushed off so quickly that we barely had a chance to ask for anything. The biggest issue was our grill. It was completely burnt and unusable after a couple of uses and we sat there for about 10 minutes waiting for someone to offer to change it. Even when our server came by twice, she didn't acknowledge it and walked away before we could say anything. We finally had to flag someone down ourselves to get it replaced. Honestly, this just reinforced why we usually avoid Gen. We have consistently had poor service there, and it often feels like the staff is intentionally inattentive so you can't order as much as you'd like. By the end of the meal, we were more frustrated than satisfied and just wanted to leave. Definitely not worth the price or the experience. First of all, love that you can add yourself to the waitlist on Yelp before being in the vicinity of the restaurant, saves a lot of time waiting. Went here on a Saturday after 1pm, it's a weekend so I assumed it was gonna be busy. There was a table that wasn't cleaned for the 20mins we were waiting up front. Looking like they were short staffed. We got sat at the far corner booth near the back door after the guy in front of us that was supposed to sit there said he didn't wanna sit there. I'm like whatever I didn't really care cause I was hungry. The menu is on a QR code but physical menus are available as well. The meat came before all the sides we ordered and we never got the rice we asked for at all till the end of the meal. Even as the meat was already cooked we still didn't have any sides, not even the banchan. The tofu soup wasn't really good, the bulgogi fries were okay and the japchae wasn't too bad. It's funny cause potato salad was the only banchan I asked for and that's the one they didn't give lol. Like I said, I understand it's a weekend, they're busy and seemed short staffed but there were just too many mistakes in my opinion and it was really hard to flag down people. Didn't get my corn cheese either :( My sister has been here a bunch and she really recommends the place so idk if I just caught them on a bad day. It takes a really bad experience for me to write a negative review, but unfortunately this visit left me no choice. My issue was not with the food itself, but with the overall service. We were seated (party of 5) and our drink order was taken right away. We were ready to order food at the same time but were told to wait. When the server returned, we ordered a first round of only 3 meats, which arrived fairly quickly. However, our drinks came much later -- and even then, only 4 of the 5 drinks arrived. The last drink never came, even after an hour, so we canceled it. While eating the first round, we noticed the grill was empty, so we placed a second order of 3 meats. It took 40 minutes for the second round to arrive. We were sitting there waiting with nothing to cook. Our waiter checked in several times and was kind, but kept explaining that the kitchen was backed up -- which may happen, but 40 minutes is unacceptable, especially for an all-you-can-eat restaurant. At $30.99 per person, I expected much better service and pacing. We did not feel like we got our money's worth. After the second round finally arrived, we decided not to order anything else and just wanted to leave. Fried fish was surprisingly good, although looked and sounded like a brick when it slid off the plate. One of the dipping sauces was just plain oil. No seasoning inside the oil. Service - terrible. One server for 430pm service for entire restaurant. Over worked. Missed several orders and requests. Didn't come frequently enough. Meats came out fast, but everything from the kitchen took forever. Took a really long time to bring more salt. Not a kid-friendly place. No drinks for kids. No plastic cups for kids. They charged $5 for leftover food. It's the whole point of sitting at that table. We waited. No server. No manager. No "sorry, we'll be right there." Just raw meat, salad, and an empty grill. Don't go here. What a huge difference from my last review 3 years ago! We came on a Thursday evening around 5ish and it wasn't packed. It took awhile for someone to see we were waiting to be seated. When we were seated, we were asked to move because the table we were sitting on, the grill was not working. Put a sign there people to let staff know this, at least! I order right away before the server can go anywhere because I can already tell this place is going to suck in service. Ok, the brisket was tasteless. When I asked for more sesame oil I had to literally walk up to the bar to ask for some. Aaron was the only one reluctant to help us. Silverio our server was nowhere to be found. If your grill turns black, don't expect them to change it. For the sides, they only give you like 5 pieces of kimchi cucumbers and like a tablespoon of kimchi and radish. The only thing that was good was the salad. How sad. Food and service should be important but it's not at this location. I'll never come back here. The staff could care less about the customers. So we went to Gen KBBQ in West Covina on May 25, 2026. Of all Gen KBBQ locations that we have experienced over the years, we have never met a Server like Zachary! He was always on top of everything as he really paid attention to detail.
