I almost always enjoy eating here. The food quality is consistent and the dining area is always very clean. However the restroom needs to be cleaned more often and restocked. My absolute favorite is the Galbi on the dinner menu that's honestly all I order for protein so I am not interested in the premium option. Most of the servers provide great or reasonably great service and when it's super busy they usually have someone helping them so they can keep providing great service. However I don't like being pressured to order premium and being told I need to get it. I am not sure if the restaurant is putting pressure on the servers to insist with the customer to order premium or if it was just the particular server Antonio. After declining twice I noticed the server Antonio behave in a different manner as if he was looking down on us, as if we were no longer worth serving. Throughout our dining experience we were consistently waiting for our meat and sides that we were only allowed to receive small portions of. I only like the cucumber and potato sides so I asked for double for my husband and I, especially because I know we will definitely finish and ask for more. The server told us he was only allowed to bring one of each or else he would get in trouble. We had to flag him down for a refill which took extremely long. My girlfriend and I went for her birthday expecting a great time but the service completely ruined our experience. Our server Giovanna was completely rude, from the moment we walked in. She would slam down our grill when changing it, and multiple times would walk away before we could completely finish our order. No eye contact was made--and she wouldn't bring the things we asked for. (Rice paper, silverware, etc.) Granted it seemed like they were short staffed, but that is no exception to be rude. I still remember the first time I tried Gen Korean BBQ. It was the Torrance location and overall, the dining experience left a positive impression on me. After Torrance, then it was the Alhambra location but stopped going as it was really crowded (and the floors were really slippery). That was many moons ago and there are a lot more AYCE Korean BBQ places now especially in the SGV but saw the Gen Korean BBQ gift cards at Costco and said, why not, it's been awhile. And, decided to give the West Covina location a shot. They were busy and glad they used the Yelp online wait list feature which helps. Still waited a bit after arrival but we got seated. They were busy and perhaps understaffed considering the long time it took for our server to take our orders as well as seeing how long it took to turn around tables when waiting for our table. More importantly, they ran out of many items like kim-chi fried rice, chap-che and both casseroles and it was only 8:30 pm. The food also seems less authentic now. The side dishes didn't have that spicyness and the marinated meats were too sweet so I suggest sticking to the non-marinated meats. We LOVE Gen, but not this location. Came here on a very slow Friday, and service was terrible. It was clear the servers and manager don't care about you. Food was typical Gen fare. We paid dinner prices because it was a Friday, but we were offered lunch food. All the special dinner items took forever to arrive. But lunch items like beef brisket, side dishes, salad would come out fast. Special items like beef fingers or short rib would take over 30 minutes. We would order and the waiter would bring two pieces of short rib (6 bones) after half an hour of waiting. All the tables were waiting. Meanwhile you would see a cluster of waiters on the side just chatting with each other. All the initial food on first ordering came fast but everything else thereafter did not. And yet they kept mindlessly changing the grill even if there was nothing cooking. It's almost like they're told to follow an algorithm and not serve as much after a set time so you get full faster. My husband and I came here for lunch, but because it was a state holiday, we were charged dinner prices, which already didn't feel great going in. Unfortunately, the experience only went downhill from there. Service was exceptionally slow. Our server would disappear for long stretches, and when she did stop by, she rushed off so quickly that we barely had a chance to ask for anything. The biggest issue was our grill. It was completely burnt and unusable after a couple of uses and we sat there for about 10 minutes waiting for someone to offer to change it. Even when our server came by twice, she didn't acknowledge it and walked away before we could say anything. We finally had to flag someone down ourselves to get it replaced. Honestly, this just reinforced why we usually avoid Gen. We have consistently had poor service there, and it often feels like the staff is intentionally inattentive so you can't order as much as you'd like. By the end of the meal, we were more frustrated than satisfied and just wanted to leave. Definitely not worth the price or the experience. I noticed there were a lot of Mexican inspired items like carne asada, al pastor, etc. so that's pretty interesting to see! Also noticing that we were the only Asians dining at this kbbq joint lol. Tasting the banchan, it didn't taste that fresh, especially the kimchi. We ordered a few rounds of beef. The brisket was surprisingly a small portion so we ordered several plates of it. It does shrivel up a lot, and you could tell that the quality of meat was very mediocre. We were also curious to try the squid steak? That can definitely pass. The bulgogi fried would also be a pass because the fries were too hard and the meat didn't really taste like bulgogi, just flavored meat. Every meat was a kinda disappointing, except for the galbi (marinated short rib). That one was actually pretty good and we should have only just gotten that. Even as the meat was already cooked we still didn't have any sides, not even the banchan. The tofu soup wasn't really good, the bulgogi fries were okay and the japchae wasn't too bad. It's funny cause potato salad was the only banchan I asked for and that's the one they didn't give lol. I only saw 2 staff members walking around. The place is pretty wide and open. We got a big booth despite being only 2 people. That was nice since it was roomy and the table could easily accommodate our food. The food was good and if it's bad it's kind of your fault since you're the one cooking it. I loved their hodak. Since it's been a while for me, I don't now if this is new but I like their fried appetizers, especially the mango tango bites, it's suppose to be a dessert, it's sweet but kinda like mango sticky rice where I feel like you can eat it any time of the meal. There are also many other great fried options. Plenty of meats to order, some seafood, vegetable, and soups. I also appreciate the servers, they are all very nice. Following my son's 8th-grade graduation, we decided to celebrate with lunch at Gen. We arrived about 20 minutes before opening, and there were already two other families waiting outside. It quickly became clear that the restaurant was not expecting such a large crowd right at opening. The team was immediately slammed with guests, to the point that additional employees had to be called in early to help manage the rush. Despite being short-staffed, the staff worked incredibly hard to accommodate everyone. We had the pleasure of being served by Zachary, who truly went above and beyond. He was assisting with seating guests, lighting grills, taking orders, delivering food, and making sure everyone had what they needed. At one point, it seemed like he was doing the work of several people. The front of the house had only three employees working, including the manager, who was also helping behind the bar to keep drinks flowing. While service was understandably slower than usual due to the unexpected volume of guests, Zachary never once complained. He remained friendly, professional, attentive, and positive throughout the entire experience. He was literally running back and forth between tables, sweating from the nonstop workload, yet he continued to provide exceptional customer service with a smile. Some guests became impatient and chose to leave, but most of us stayed, recognizing how hard the staff was working under the circumstances. It takes a really bad experience for me to write a negative review, but unfortunately this visit left me no choice. My issue was not with the food itself, but with the overall service. We were seated (party of 5) and our drink order was taken right away. We were ready to order food at the same time but were told to wait. When the server returned, we ordered a first round of only 3 meats, which arrived fairly quickly. However, our drinks came much later -- and even then, only 4 of the 5 drinks arrived. The last drink never came, even after an hour, so we canceled it. While eating the first round, we noticed the grill was empty, so we placed a second order of 3 meats. It took 40 minutes for the second round to arrive. We were sitting there waiting with nothing to cook.
