I really wanted to like this place. I ordered the Orange Chicken - medium, steamed dumplings, crab Rangoon and Tom Yum soup - medium. The orange chicken was very good, crispy and not overly sweet. I'd recommend that for sure. Dumplings looked pretty but didn't come with dipping sauce and were a little dry. The Tom Yum soup wasn't horrible, it actually was almost really good except it was a little on the sweet side and just not my preference. If you like sweeter Tom Yum soup then you'd like this. Lastly, don't order the crab Rangoons at all. They were horrible and had barely any stuffing and the sauce almost ruined it and tasted stale and was very thick. So it was alright. I'd go there again only for the orange chicken but probably would pass as it wasn't amazing. read more

First time visit. Jay our wonderful waitress was awesome.She greeted us with a warm welcome and seats. She was very patient with attending to my sometimes demanding needs. We ordered spring rolls that have the perfect crisp, the kind that makes your mouth water. Crab ragoons with real crab and a yummy sweet chili sauce to pop them in before a bite. First thing you notice right away is that you are transported to a nightclub or rave party. The restaurant is very dark with black lights that highlight the art on the walls. The ambience is usually mellow, I have gone several times with there never really being big groups of people. The food is good, that is why I continue to go back. They are not kidding when they say Thai Hot, they mean it. I stay a good 3-4 in the spiceness level. All around good place that I continue to go back to and will continue to do so. The ambiance and decor is the only reason it's not "perfect". I personally like to see my food and I already wear glasses so have such a dark place disorients me a little. Sooooo disappointed in today's experience. My friend and I ordered spring rolls, crab rangoon, Thai fried rice, and curry chicken. After 2 bites, we determined that the curry chicken was not what we liked. We informed the waiter, and he said, "So do you want to pay now?" This restaurant is phenomenal. My girlfriend and I have tried multiple items on the menu including the pad kee mao , red curry , ginger lover , and sukhotthai ; all have been extremely delicious. We also tend to get an order of the Thai dumplings which are chalk full of pork & carrots and come which a delicious dipping sauce. Sure, this news is no Joy Behar & Whoopi walkin' out on Bill O Reilly & Babs taking a mighty stand... yet it's integral in our daily lives here in Indy. To the point: the drunken noodles have changed -- for the better. Maybe it was the choice of chicken over beef that made them switch it up on me... but I'm happy about it. Before, the beef drunken noodles were all noodles and beef. Granted... those noodles ruled my school... yet... now that I've seen this drunken noodles with chicken... all has changed. Bean sprouts, spices, peppers, brocolli... just an over all more well-rounded thing it's got goin' on. Maybe an even more important note: I think when take out orders happen, and you give them different spice levels... it all just gets jumbled because a 2 is more like a 4 and a 3 is more like a 7. I had dinner here on a Saturday night, and we had no trouble getting a table for three around 6pm without reservations. The aroma when we walked in smelled strongly of Indian spices which I'm guessing may have been wafting over from Shalimar next door. The menu here also seems to share a few items with Shalimar; we had never seen samosas on a Thai menu before. Anyway, we decided to stick with Thai rather than the Indian items or sushi. I'm not sure what is up with sushi on a Thai menu....I didn't see anyone order any while we were there....The vegetarian spring rolls were tasty, but I'd probably call them egg rolls if they weren't labeled as spring rolls. They were crispy and filled with cabbage and carrots. The entrees come with salad or soup. The soup is a basic broth that was flavorful and had a nice kick to it, but at least my cup had nothing but broth. I'm not sure if this is typical here, but similar soups at other Thai restaurants usually have some lemongrass and/or a few vegetables. The entrees are very large; unless you are very hungry, plan on leftovers. I had a red curry with chicken and medium spice. The curry sauce was really flavorful, but medium spice was not really spicy at all. I'm glad I didn't go up a step in spice though as apparently the gap between medium and hot is huge. A friend ordered his dish hot, and it was extremely hot. I'm not sure what was going on with the spice levels, but elsewhere my medium would have been mild, and his hot would have been "Thai hot". The red curry came with green beans and matchstick sliced bamboo shoots. It was also supposed to have eggplant, but I only found one half-sliver-dollar sized slice in the whole dish. Service was OK. The food came out fast, and the order was accurate. We really had trouble though getting refills on our water. The friend with the extra hot entree tried repeatedly to flag down a server, and was ignored about three times before someone finally refilled his water, but then walked away before refilling the other two glasses on the table. We did manage to flag someone else down who then brought us a carafe which is what other tables seemed to have. Bottom line for me is that this is decent Thai for a very good price. There is better elsewhere in the city, but this place is quick and convenient if you're in Broad Ripple. read more

This is my 3rd favorite Thai place in Indy (after Siam Square and Thai Taste) and my go-to for Thai food in Broad ripple. 3rd favorite might not sound like a compliment, but considering Thai food is my absolute favorite, it is! Like most ethnic food places, Thai Cafe is very accommodating to vegans and go out of their way to make substitutions and omit ingredients to make dishes vegan-friendly. Some of my favorite dishes here are the most classic Thai dish of all - Padd Thai and curry. Although, I usually go with curry because they have some damn-good curry here. The green and red curry are both creamy and delicious. The combination of the curry sauce, tofu, veggies, and rice is mouthwatering. We always get the vegetarian spring rolls for an appetizer. I do recommend dining in here, as my experience with ordering to-go here is that it tends to take a while longer than if you dine in. They also work with Delivery2Go and will bring your order straight to your door, which is an added bonus! read more

I've lived in the Broad Ripple area for years and finally got around to trying Thai Cafe with some friends! We met up on a cold, blustery evening to enjoy some delicious Thai food and beer. The restaurant is small and cozy, so there's a very intimate feel eating here. The restaurant is clean, the waiters are friendly, and there is a good noise level throughout the building. We started by ordering a samoosa appetizer, followed by some Chang Thai beers. As we journeyed through the huge Thai menu we sipped the foreign lager and intensely made our decisions. I decided on the Thai teriyaki prepared with fried chicken and thick teriyaki sauce served with broccoli and white rice on the side. The teriyaki sauce was intense: thick, strong, and glazed all over the chicken. Every meal starts you with a complimentary soup or salad, which is fantastic for the price you're paying for your meal. They are not trying to do it all - sushi, Chinese food, etc. They are focussing on fresh, high quality Thai food and it is the best in town. I just wish I didn't have to drive so far to get there (Westfield) but it is worth it. The chefs used to be at the Thai Issan on Rt. 32 in Westfield but took over the ownership of Thai Cafe. My loss is Broad Ripples gain. The food is definitely the best not to mention that really good people are funning it now. I have my faves around town, and the ones I absolutely stay away from. I, admittedly, didn't go into this visit with high expectations but after reading a few reviews I was in. There were a few of us, so we grabbed a couple of entrees. My pics aren't great, the lighting is multicolored, which makes for interesting photos. But the food was spoke for itself. The menu is mostly Thai but has some fusion elements. We got spring rolls, orange chicken, panang curry and the salmon cream cheese sushi roll. The orange chicken was the best I've had. I am not a huge fan of the fish but this was good. The spring rolls were pretty standard. The curry was almost perfect. I asked for a 4 on the spice scale of 1-5, I could've gone for more spice. I searched for a couple of hours trying to figure out what to have for dinner last night. I opted for the spring rolls and the pad woon sen. The spring rolls were delicious. They were really hot and the sauce was good. The soup that came with the pad woon sen had a really good flavor. There was cilantro in the soup, however, and much of it was really brown. You could tell that this was because the cilantro was old and not because it was sitting in the soup. The pad woon sen was okay. The vegetables in the noodle dish also tasted old. They have one of the most unique and diverse menus of thai food in the city. Many options that are not found at other joints (including many with moo dang, thai bbq pork, which is one major plus for me). Portions are great, prices reasonable, service is good. Taste is iffy, however, on many dishes. Some are amazing such as the sai ko larb and ba mee moo dang but other more staples of thai cuisine like basil stir fry or pad woon sen are less than stellar. When we walked in there was no one in the place except for the workers. Worried at first but then again it was prime trick-or-treating time. The girls working were extremely helpful when my friend and I were picking out our dinners. My friend ordered Pad Thai- level 3. It was very good and flavorful. She thought it was definitely spicy. I ordered the Padd See Ewe- Level 3. I added extra spice to mine and it was perfect. Large pieces of chicken. No one likes to be skimped on the protein. Portions were large and I made two meals out of it. I definitely recommend this Thai joint. Looks like it may be more popular as take-put versus a sit down meal. Thai Cafe is my go-to Thai restaurant. The portions are huge, the food is tasty, and the restaurant itself it one of the most oddly decorated places I've ever been in. (See: weird brain-like sculpture on the ceiling.) As someone who can't handle much cilantro, damned European genes, there are several rotating dishes I get. Pad Thai, obviously is a major contender. The curry varieties are all excellent, but the best thing on the menu to me is the THOM YUM SOUP. ALL HAIL. A savory and filling soup that takes you on a journey to Flavor Country, this is what I look for in a soup! I usually get it with tofu because the chicken is sometimes dry, and the shrimp still have the tails on. Nothing worse that having to stop the shoveling of food into your mouth to take the tail off of a shrimp. This is also dangerous if you get the soup spicy and then plan on doing some eye touching later. All entrees come with a cole-slaw type salad or cup of savory broth. This place is tops! read more

Major plus: delivery food is well packaged and arrives hot! I have eaten at Thai Cafe twice, once in person, once delivered. Noodle dishes are good but leave a little to be desired. I find the veggies and noodles just a bit overcooked. The meat tastes like the oil it was cooked in without much seasoning. But they do give you just the spice level you ask for. It may suit your tastes if you like a nice saucy dish, but I'm always looking for those crisp veggies and aromatic flavors. read more

Fortunately, Thai Cafe doesn't even come close to that--their green curry, which is my gold standard for Thai food, is delicious. I also love the little crispy things they bring you as snacks before your meal. I will agree with Marc that the huge TV is very annoying. I really hate TVs in restaurants, and they seem more unavoidable with every passing year. Other than that, I think the ambiance in here is very cute. Very average Thai food here, so it's nice in a "Thai craving emergency" situation, but not for every day dinner. I was told our take-out order would be ready in 30 minutes, so I arrived after waiting 20 minutes and it was already waiting and cold. The Thai iced tea was so overly sweet that it was inedible and our crag rangoon was a bit soggy. Pad Thai was passible, but again, not something I am going to frequently order here. Portions sizes are nice and entrees automatically come with soup, so they do have something going for them, but they'll need to step it up a notch for my repeat business. read more
