If it had not been a family dinner, I would have insisted on speaking to the manager for a reduction in my bill. The only waiter walked around as if he was asleep. He needed reminding constantly. When he delivered food to the table, he just set the plates on the end of the table and walked away. He forgot drinks, an additional cup, hot sauce, and my daughters meal. Plates were brought one at a time with 3-4 minutes between deliveries. There were only two (2) other tables with people in the restaurant. The food was ok, but nothing special. After this total lack of service, he informed us we had already been charged 18% for his service. So, just OK Thai food at a cost of $105 became $133 due to our waiters gracious donation to himself. We are glad there are many Thai eateries available, as this one will never see us again. read more

Thai Nivas Cafe is like a gorgeous blonde chick, not like a smokin hot chick, but so pretty that you think she must have somethin goin in insider her head besides American Idol and designer jeans. Walking into TNC, after reading the positive reviews, and taking in the decor, I was intrigued enough to think, 'what's up baby?' However, TNC went the way of most overly beautiful things, stunnin on the outside, but frontin on the inside. Three of us from my work Funch crew (fun + lunch) got there almost at 12:30 so it wasn't like we hit major work lunch time. The place did have several tables of at least 6 or more work crews, so I'll give them that, but it took forever for us to get our orders. Even after all of the cackling office chicks and khakied software developers trudged out to their economy cars and left us alone with the Harley Davidson sushi chef and his overly willing to please minions, we still didn't get our food for at least 15 minutes. And, this was after waiting for 10 or more for the crowd to cycle out. We had yellow, panang, and red curries. All of us felt that it was pretty average compared to all of the other Thai we've had in town. Mine certainly was, with only 3 potato chunks, my yellow curry hunger wasn't satisfied. And what a fooch killer it was laced with a handful of string cut onions that there was no getting around, other than to not eat much of it. It's Friday night people, onions are off limits! We did get the Nivas specialty roll, which was basically your salmon roll, and we did not order it fried, but it came out that way. It was good enough for neither of us to care that it wasn't how we ordered. To their credit, the Harley Davidson Sushi Chef did bring out three crab rangoons when our food finally arrived, and amid the profuse amount of sorries, we decided that we were back on track with TNC after that. I'll come back here for more biker sushi, but not Thai. And besides, while TNC might not be the deeply satisfying kind, there were a lot of other hotties dining here that made it worth the effort. read more

We were recommended to eat here by a coworker. There were good and bad aspects to our dinner. The service was a little slow so we sat for awhile without anyone attending us. There were five of us at dinner and we split a variety of food- some were better than others. The sushi rolls were delicious!! We also got Tom Yum which was great!! It had a kick to it! We also ordered Masaman Chicken Curry and Spicy Stir Fry. The waiter asked us on a scale of 1-5 how spicy did we want our food. We decided 2 since we were down for some heat but not too much but sadly the food had no spice at all. Definitely a place to try regardless. read more

I've driven by this Thai place for years but never stopped in until last night. I'm glad I did. There are a handful of Thai restaurants near my home, but none that I think are so great that they beat out the others. Lately I've been grabbing my Thai take-out from Land of Smile, just a little east of this place on Olive, so I was happy to get a comparison. First, I like the decor much better than any of the other Thai places nearby. The wood walls and tables give is a warm ambiance, and I like that it doesn't have the classic out-of-date knick knacks around that you often find at Asian restaurants. I have 3 dishes that I like best at Thai restaurants and I wanted to see how they compared with my other choices. I was glad that my friend ordered one of them, the panang curry. The portion size was perfect...enough to finish it all but not feel stuffed. My single bite taste was a little spicier and soupy than I get at Land of Smile, but I liked that it wasn't filled with slightly undercooked vegetables (the Land of Smile version comes with green beans, carrots and onions that could be a cooked just a little longer before being tossed into the sauce). That said, I still liked it enough that I would order it here. I ordered the Kee Mao noodle dish with chicken and the flavor was perfect. This is only the second place I've had it, and was surprised to get spaghetti looking noodles instead of the flat egg-noodle style noodles they use at Land of Smile. I have to say I think I like the Land of Smile version better but I did enjoy my meal. Carry out I would probably grab it from the other place, but I would much prefer to eat-in here and would order this again. The only other comment was that my friend ordered hot green tea, and the water wasn't really hot enough to tun the tea bag into steaming tea...we asked for a top off with hot water but I'm not sure it really helped. Is it weird to order sushi a few times in one sitting? Like, pick a few and then decide you didn't order enough food? I feel like I do that with sushi and tapas. I don't know if my servers hate me or if this normal. Anyhow, this server thought I was crazy... but the second one helped us out and the food was excellent either way. We arrived at an oddball dinner time in order to catch a movie. The server told us right off the sushi chef had just left on break! When I told her, that's really all we came in for she said maybe she could call him. It was a bit awkward then and I felt like I had to order lots of sushi to make up for him missing his lunch break. Another reviewer had called him Harley Sushi Chef, that is exactly what I thought of when I saw him come in... I half expected him to come out from behind the bar and start teaching us karate since we were the only ones in there. Aside from our oddities, the food was excellent, also loved the atmosphere and when people started showing up it seemed like a really fun date night dinner place. I love this place. Was in the mood for Thai, and this was a perfect spot in between the girlfriend and I and we were not disappointed. We came in late one night and we were the only people in the restaurant. The decor was nice and clean. The server was lady who did not speak very good English, but she was one of the friendliest people I've ever been served by, very helpful with the food choices and lots of smiling. The gf and I were fairly hungry, but we definitely ordered way more than we could eat, with the plan to have left overs for lunch the next day. We ordered a roll of sushi, some seaweed salad, tom yum noodle soup, and pad thai. The roll of sushi wasn't bad, but wasn't memorable enough for me to remember which one we got exactly. But the seaweed salad was amazing. The pad thai was also extremely good, it had a thicker sauce and great taste. Better than your normal take out Thai food. The tom yum soup I loved, it wasn't extremely sour which I like, but wasn't sour enough for my gf who loves pickled things if that does anything for you. So if you like sour, it may not be enough, but if you have more middle of the road taste buds, it is a good half step into the tom yum soups. We enjoyed everything so much we actually ended up finishing everything..... Will def be back. read more

Wow! I enjoy this place a lot. I was in the area and wanted some food to-go. Excellent quality of pad see ewe! I got it without egg and with tofu. We love the food here. It's amazing Thai food. Great Japanese sushi too. The problem is that the service and wait times for service and food is often excruciatingly long. Sometimes food comes out 45-60 minutes after ordering, and not at the same time as the other dishes. The owner seems to know the service times are ridiculous because she seemed resigned to my complaints about waiting 50 minutes for food to come out of the kitchen. There is surely a lack of leadership and coordination here. The way to eat here is if you have unlimited time and aren't that hungry or if you call in for take out. At these prices, better service is expected. The place would definitely be packed and table turnover higher if the service times were more efficient. read more

In town for a conference and needed a place that had vegan options along with meat options to have dinner with a friend. This place was just about the mid-way point between our two hotels, so it was a natural choice. The place had a lot of people in it on a Wednesday at almost 8:00, so that was a good sign. I was pleased to see the the menu was not just thai and included Chinese and Japanese food as well. I got a bowl of miso and California roll to start and some beef pad see eiw for the main meal. My friend had the veggie rolls to start and a tofu-veggie mix for the main meal with jasmine rice. Everything was really fresh and came out very quickly. And, they were able to split our bill (for business receipts) without a problem. I would totally come back here when I am back in town! read more

Driving on the busy streets of olive blvd, in a small strip mall there is a tiny Thai place called Thai Nivas Cafe. By the ratings on yelp with 3.5 stars, I was a little bit shocked because every time I have been there, the food has always been delicious. It usually isn't crowded and I wonder if it is because of the location. The environment and decor in the restaurant is cute and the service has always been welcoming to me. I always get a Thai iced tea and the pad peanut sauce noodles with chicken and extra peanut sauce, because who doesn't love a good pad Thai and Thai iced tea. What I appreciate with them is that they don't charge an arm and a leg for extra peanut sauce and they always give you plenty. Next time you are in the area driving down olive looking for a nice quiet tasty restaurant, give Thai Nivas a try. read more

Hubby and I ate here not too long ago and it was good. We started off with pot stickers that were fluffy and flavorful. We both had PadThai - mine was with tofu and his was with chicken. I ordered mine with spice , not too spicy though - a 2 out of 5 in heat. Hubby had his without added spice. We also ordered Thai iced coffee, which was delicious! Went here thinking Thai food, but ended up with the sushi lunch special. Three pieces of nigiri and a california roll with miso and salad. Perfect for a small lunch. The nigiri were of my favorites: salmon, tuna, and yellowtail. All three pieces were fresh and well made. The california roll was not the best...not sure I could put my finger on its shortcoming, I've just had CR I liked a lot better other places. Miso and salad were pretty standard. Service was slow, but I was by myself and trying to do a little work so really didn't mind until I had to chase down my check when I was ready to leave. I thought this place would be the answer to my craving for Thai food...Several of my friends highly recommended it. Perhaps it used to be better. I ordered 3 entrees for takeout. The pad thai was so sweet even my tween wouldn't eat it, and this kid loves noodles and pasta. The chicken red curry was watery. No taste. The chicken was dry. The pork basil was similar, watery and tasteless. The pork was also dry. Seemed like the cooked the protein ahead of time and just toss it into whatever sauce you order. Overall a "fine" place. Not necessarily my top Thai Restaurant in town but overall a very cozy atmosphere with a decent amount of space. The decor is typical Thai with Tique wood paneling with some elevated seating, both tables and booths. A common trend is for Thai restaurants to also serve sushi so we did partake. Overall it was very good. Nothing "fantastic" but if you want a little Japanese with your Thai then go for it. We ordered Ba Mee and also rice noodles. The beef and rice noodle soup is fantastic. They also tend to cater the monthly food fairs at the temple if you didn't know. I believe the beef noodle soup is easily one of the best in town. The service this evening was a little slow but very polite. Price is typical for a Thai restaurant. Parking is good and free. This is a little hard to find off of Olive Rd. It is right across Red Racks. We'll be back when we are in the mood for some comfort food! read more

This is currently our favorite Thai restaurant in St. Louis. It's amazing that it's owned by the same person who owns the 3 Thai restaurants in the Loop, because it's so much better (and cleaner!). The food is really delicious here. Portion sizes and prices are reasonable. Quick, friendly service. Nice decor. There are only 3 minor things I would change here... 1. They need a little background music - it's a little too quiet. 2. The restaurant is too big... there are usually only 2 or 3 tables being used, and it just feels cavernous. Definitely not cozy. 3. Their food is served on giant, flat rimmed plates... the sauce lays all over the bottom and because the dish is almost completely flat, it's impossible to get a little on a spoon to put on top of your food. If you pick up the plate, the sauce runs off the edge onto the table. It also allows for the food to get cold more quickly. It would be better if they would serve the food in bowls, along with a plate to serve yourself. It would make it easier to share and would stay warm longer. Overall, it's highly recommended. read more

I write this review with some trepidation because on one hand, I want them to be busy and successful so I can enjoy their food for a long time; but on the other hand, don't want too many people to know about it so it's not too crowded when I want to eat there. I guess this is a good problem to have. I've eaten here probably a dozen times not straying too far from my favorites, because they are all so good. I might try a different noodle or level of spiciness, or something small, but I am always pleased with the freshness, quality, and sense of healthy when I eat here. It is reasonably priced and has both Thai and Japanese items on the menu. The place is clean, well lit, and everyone who works there is friendly and attentive. Went to order takeout with coworkers and was met with a not very friendly hostess. When asked which was better, the pad thai or the beef salad, she said "everything is good" with no further discussion. I usually like it when a waitress or waiter gives suggestions on what to order based on the choices I give. Usually they will say, X is more filling, but Y is more flavorful. Y has a distinct flavor that not most people enjoy, but X is playing it safe. None of that with her. Ordered a thai iced tea with my food and requested it to have half/light ice -- the entire cup was filled with ice. Ordered a beef salad -- it was 90% beef and 10% salad; I wish the salad was actually more of a salad. However, it had the right flavor I was looking for. Prices are reasonable, poor hospitality, food is mediocre. read more

The food was outstanding. Delicious! I picked up an order of Shrimp Pad Thai. My family ordered the Chicken Pad Thai, Spicy Stir Fry with Duck, and Crab Rangoon. When ordering the Spicy Stir Fry they ask what your heat level is from 1 to 5, with 5 being the hottest. When ordering this dish, keep in mind that even level 2 has a nice little kick to it. The only issue I had was the wait for my pick up order. Maybe it was just a day that everyone decided to get take out, but the wait for a carry out was kind of crazy. I probably waited 30 minutes at the restaurant (keeping in mind that I placed the order 15 minutes before I even left my house). I hope that no one ever tries to light up in this place. It's a tinder box with all of the wood and lacquer. Don't get me wrong it's absolutely beautifully done, but WOW you would think that they are part owners of a lumber yard. We were one of three tables in this place at 6:30 on a Saturday night..... PEOPLE YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE MISSING. The food was wonderful. The spring rolls, which I base the way my night is going to head, had fresh vegetable filling and the sauce on the side (huge plus). The service aspect can't be gauged because only having 3 tables occupied makes it possible that a 12 year old off the street could at least get the job done. **Note** Our server was good, not great. The Pad See Iew, my go to, was prepped to what I would have thought to be a 3 out of 5 star. Her Pad Thai was closer to 3 than the 4 she ordered but no minor or major complaints. The size of the portions made me look at her and say "Looks like it'll be Thai for lunch tomorrow". Damn there was a lot of food and it was so good that it didn't make lunch the next day.... I hate myself for late night eating. It's just as good cold and reheated. Three funny/odd moments of the night. First, there were more To Go orders than people actually eating in this place. Second, our server told us she only works there one night a week and the Thai place she works at full time does things differently. I didn't have her ellaborate and don't think I want her to either. And third and most commical..... They played the SAME SONG over and over again. I have no idea what it was because it wasn't in English but they had one song on repeat. Thai Nivas is not too far from where I live, so it has been added to the "Perfect Lazy Thai Food Night" list of restaurants. It has good food at reasonable prices. They serve everything from the basic Thai noddle & curry dishes to some pretty dang good sushi. I especially like their spicy scallop roll. Not every sushi menu has scallops listed on it, so it is nice that they have some new options you don't see at every place. The noodle dishes I have tried here are tasty, pretty standard and comparable to what you find at most Thai places. One thing that does stand out about their noodle dishes is that they give you a lot of veggies, instead of just noodles...making the meal a little healthier! read more

So this place perplexes me and makes me wonder about the breadth of my knowledge of Thai food.... next to nothing! That leaves Thai Nivas with being... different. Their pad thai is overtly sweet, and their pad see ew has a crazy fermented flavor. I decided to try out their "chef's special," which was a "volcano chicken" and the first bite made me think hm.... chicken breast with a tomato sauce you typcially see over meat loaf... disappointing... and yet I couldn't stop eating the thing. It tasted even better the next day. The problem with the place is that it has pretty bad service, even on a slow day. We found ourselves waiting forever for service more often than not. The atmosphere is nice and it does warrant a try, but I just can't say that I'm a fan of anything except for that chicken, which doesn't bring me back much. read more
