IF I COULD RATE THIS 0 STARS I WOULD.... half a star maybe for the tiger rolls... even then you did not get enough for the price we paid. Me and my dashingly handsome date went to Thai Pepper with optimism. The interior is very nice and gives you the fine dinning experience. HOWEVER the service is a different story. We waited 30 minutes to even have our order taken, and another HOUR and 45 minute to receive our food. We ended up ordering the tiger rolls (excellent) and the pad Thai (terrible; waste of resources and incredibly over priced) pad Thai was dry, bland and didn't resemble REAL Pad Thai in the slightest. It reminded me of a microwaveable minute meal you could pick at the dollar store. After ordering 2 pad Thais and the tiger rolls (4 small pieces) our bill came out to over $50.00. I do not recommend eating here if you're hoping for decent pad Thai. I can't speak for any of the other food, obviously. This was my first and last time dinning here. Hopefully honest reviews like this will encourage them to put more thought into the food they put out and the experience of their customers. read more

Had a wonderful dinner recently at Thai Pepper. The Country Curry and Chicken Satay were delicious, and I love the cucumber salad that comes with. The cocktails were also very tasty. All this in a lovely setting by the creek - the patio is really really nice. Our server, Elliot, was wonderful and helpful. Will definitely come back next time I'm in the area! read more

On a nice night ask for a seat on the patio by the creek. It's very pleasant there with the sound of the creek and the Christmas light lighting. Many of the dishes are slightly different that what we normally think of when we think "thai" restaurant and the change is nice. Everything is clearly made with care. Spring Rolls taste like spring rolls (contrary to what I just said). Nice and Crispy Calamari - very crispy! Evil Jungle - very good, but spciy. The beef is really flavorful and tender, but it definitely has a kick! Sweat & Spicy Crispy Fish - this was probably my least favorite dish of the night - plenty crispy, but not overly flavorful. Pad Thai - refreshingly different than "normal" pad thai - less sweet, a little bit drier, and still quite tasty. Not the cheapest place to eat in Ashland, but worth the patio seating every time! read more

Thai Pepper has been a favorite for over 20 years, but last night's dinner was a huge disappointment. The service was lousy even though there were empty tables and many wait staff on hand. Our waitress did not come to take our order for over 20 minutes. She brought the dishes out one by one so we sat and waited till we were all served. She never came back to check on us or fill our water glasses. I had to get up and ask another waiter for water, and another bowl of rice and to get our check. I ordered a shrimp with veggies dish. The sauce was watery, no flavor except salt - and so salty that I could not finish my meal. They served small bowls of rice to go with the curries my companions chose, not enough for either of them. That will likely be my last visit to Thai Pepper. read more

I hate giving a bad review, and if you look at my other reviews, I think you'll see that I almost never do, but after thinking about my experience at Thai Pepper tonight, I decided that it might help the restaurant to know how bad my experience was. My partner and I decided to stop in here tonight because it wasn't too busy and they advertised that it was happy hour all night, and since we didn't want a lot of food or have a whole lot of time we thought it would be a good time to try it. We got seated quickly and ordered drinks (after being told they were out of everything we wanted), and since we had already looked at the menu outside, we were able to order our food then too. We asked to keep the menu in case we wanted more drinks or another small plate. It was about 30 minutes before our drinks arrived, but it was at least another 40-60 minutes before our food got there and in that time only the hostess had stopped by to refill our water glasses. When the food finally got there it was simply bad: beef satay with two tiny (I mean really small. Think smaller than you're thinking!) pieces of beef that were charred and tough, paired with a tiny dollop of white rice, two small bits of not-Amazon sauces, and a few plain old French fries on the same plate as our veggie satay that was ok, but undercooked with minimal sauce and no other flavor to speak of; and a green salad that had some cold beef on it and a fairly tasty dressing, but which just didn't taste like something that I couldn't have gotten for 1/3 the price by buying some greens and a lime at the coop. I realize this isn't a lot to order, and all that, but we weren't expecting to wait for 1.5 hours for our food. In all this time, no one came by to say sorry or explain why things were taking so long , to ask if we wanted to order another drink, or even to ask how he food was once we got it. Anyway, take this for what you will, and I hope the restaurant can improve its workflow. We're locals and like supporting local restaurants, but this is one we won't be going back to. read more

We ordered the lime salad, tofu lemongrass soup, and tofu phad thai. Overall, it was essentially without flavor. Hardly any lime in the salad, no hint of lemongrass in the soup and no fish sauce or peanuts detectable in the phad thai! Also they used weird noodles. Bewildering... read more

Like many of the restaurants in the Ashland theater district, this has a tiny, selective menu, and it's yuppie-Thai, not real Thai. That said, a couple appetizers at the satay bar and an entree from the kitchen downstairs were tasty. My entree was shrimp with onions and mushrooms, and it mixed together very well. Not sure what to say about the service. It wasn't bad service: my food came, so did the bill, no problems, no insults, but the waiters give off a haughty and distracted air, as if they were grudgingly taking time off from the important task of learning lines for their auditions. read more

Definitely get the Thai iced tea drink. Delicious. They are supportive of substitutions and do everything they can to accommodate you. Sierra is an amazing server. Ask for her by name. I dined here yesterday and found the food delicious, service excellent and the atmosphere interesting and fun. It's in a lovely location over the creek on a sweet downtown street, although a little pricey in the satay bar for "small plates". I had been craving Thai food for a week, walked in and out of a couple other places in Ashland where I didn't like the atmosphere, and just stumbled upon this place. I ate "upstairs" in the satay bar. My regret is that patio outdoor seating on that warm night was not offered to me- I would have loved to dine outdoors, which I noticed was offered to other people who came in after me. I had a trio of satay skewers and a glass of house wine. That was just enough food for me as a small plate. One skewer was vegetable, which was good but a little lacking in flavor. One was chicken, which was super tasty and moist, and the 3rd was lamb which was very tasty but had a little gristle. The peanut sauces on all 3 were good, the rice was fluffy and flavorful, and the cucumber salad was excellent- fresh, crunchy and not too sweet. My server was very friendly and attentive, and the rest of the staff was as well, despite my wishing that the patio would have been offered as an option (I was clearly there for the first time). I recommend this place and will come back during my one month in Ashland, and sit outside! read more

This place has such a nice vibe. Relaxed but still intimate. The Evil Jungle that someone suggested on here was spot on! Chunks of tender beef over a bed of spinach with rice and cucumber salad to compliment. We really enjoyed the calamari and beef salad as well. We moved to Ashland recently, and were very excited to try Thai Pepper. The wait staff, bartenders, greeters, etc., were absolutely lovely; however we were truly disappointed in the food. It is quite inauthentic Thai food and lacked flavor. The Drunken Noodles had the strangest flavor, not like any we've ever had or made ourselves, and they were grey. Sadly, we will not be going back. We wish them well, and hope they can make improvements. We'd be willing to try again if they make some pretty drastic changes. read more

This was our second visit to Thai Pepper. Last year just days before the fires it for near Ashland Oregon we had stopped in and had an excellent meal. Our server was a young woman named Allison and we were very impressed with her service as well as the interesting flavors that were being put together. So our next trip back north to Oregon we made sure to spend the night in Ashland so that we could stop again at Thai Pepper. We were not disappointed, Allison was still there providing the same excellent service and insights. They have just open up their upstairs fried chicken spot, buttermilk, Japanese, and Korean styles, all season to perfection & delicious. No chewy cartilage/ fat, just juicy tender meat. Sep. '19: This was one of Ashland's best dinner restaurants for many years. But, Thai Pepper is going through a transition. The lower level dining room and creekside patio are closed for some kind of repairs or renovations. In the interim, what was formally the bar upstairs serves as the dining room. The menu is somewhat smaller to accommodate working in a smaller kitchen. It seemed like the servings were a bit smaller, too. Still, our lamb chops and curry dishes were quite tasty. I think everyone is doing their best to make it work, but of course it's not the same. One of the servers said she thought the upstairs will become something different from the downstairs, after it reopens. I certainly hope Thai Pepper survives and recovers fully from this challenge. read more

My wife and I have eaten at Thai Pepper several times over a ten year period when we come to Ashland. The food has always been very flavorful and well presented. Last night was another opportunity and they did not let us down. I had one of their specials, grilled Indonesian Lamb chops with vegetables in a very tasty sauce with rice. Four lamb chops grilled medium rare. The meal was very good. Add a pint of Boneyard pale ale, outdoor seating a my beautiful bride and what more can a person ask for? My wife has the Pad Thai with shrimp and complimented her meal as well. Plenty of large shrimp, a lot of flavor and filling. We will continue to come here during our future trips. read more

Okay. I'm an Ashland local who formerly lived in Portland and was *spoiled* silly by the plethora of Thai food options in Portland.... Plus, I've been to tons of thai restaurants all over the country. Thai Pepper has to rank somewhere near the bottom of the barrel... The worst part: It's ridiculously expensive for exceptionally MEDIOCRE food. I don't know what's worse; the fact that the food is seriously unimpressive and blah, or the price. Either way, this is just one overpriced restaurant that I will continue to avoid... It's too bad. Ashland doesn't have many Thai restaurants, and most of them are just okay. read more

No offense to Ashland, but I kind of feel like this should be classified as "Thai" food. It was all right as far as that goes, but don't go expecting something super authentic. We ordered some kind of spring roll appetizer that was nothing like I expected. It was essentially deep fried cream cheese. Do they eat cream cheese in Thailand? Methinks no. Methought I was going to have a coronary after eating just one. The main courses were better. We had a red chicken curry that we had been warned was "the spiciest on the menu." All I can say about the spice is, b*tch, please. It tasted good, didn't have a real rich sauce like a lot of curries, but tasty. if you enjoy thai food you won't like this place. you would think that with all the liberties they've taken with authenticity the food quality would be something they'd mastered, but that is not the case. even the simplest of their dishes lack the balance of flavor and textures that make thai food wonderful -- or even thai fusion for that matter. adding insult to injury, it's grossly overpriced. ashland deserves better. read more

One of the best happy hours in Ashland. $3 beers (the pilsner is to die for) and a cheap happy hour food menu with some good stuff on there. Ivan is our server and he is great. The food is just okay. The two stars is mostly because it is way way way overpriced. Portions are tiny and I can give examples. For two thumb sized spring rolls cut in half they charge 11-12 dollars. $9 for less than half of a cup of wine (small glass). Well, they managed to seat a group of 9 of us. We were out on the patio, which was fine because it was a mild October night and there were heaters. That is, some of the time there were heaters, because they kept going out and having to be restarted by the busy wait staff. The use of the patios allows Thai Pepper to seat a lot more parties than indoors but that doesn't make the kitchen or the bar any bigger. You want to get your orders in ASAP after you're seated so you don't get stuck behind a whole crowd of orders for people trying to get to the 8 o'clock shows. We put our food order in before beverages for that reason and consequently our drinks arrived about the same time as entrees. Of the 7 main courses we orderered, 2 were outstanding and the rest were just good. Not as great a track record as I would like for the kinds of prices they charge. Seek out the crispy sweet-hot fish for the biggest bang for your buck. read more

Must haves if you go there: Calamari Tiger Rolls (about as Thai as California rolls are Japanese but still delicious and possibly addicting) Chicken Saté Pad Thai (this dish has the Indonesian kick I spoke of) Beef Panang If the place is packed expect to wait a little bit for Entrées but the Apps and Bar Menu items always come out quick! We headed out a bit late for dinner and stopped in here after our first choice was full. We ate at the satay bar upstairs, something we had not done before. It was a good choice. We ordered lamb satay. The lamb was tender enough and served with a peanut sauce. I particularly liked the sauce; it was not the usual sweet sauce, but had a spicy bite that worked well with the lamb. W also ordered the chickens won tons with curry sauce. It was good; Rebecca liked it better than I did. The sauce was good, but not as much curry flavor as I would have liked. We ordered the papaya salad with chutney, which was great, particularly the chutney. As you can see, this was a small plate meal at the bar. We had limited time and this was just perfect. Expectations met and exceeded. By the way, we split a half bottle of wine, which was just right for the time we had. It did not hurt it was Trimbach Gewurtztraminer, one of our all time favorites. If you have not tried the satay bar, give it a try. The food was very good and the service just right. read more

We LOVE this place!! We have been coming here for almost thirty years and it has never disappointed. During the year we come for cocktails and appetizers in the recently remodeled bar. Walked by this place a few times and was enticed by their patio over the Ashland river! They were very helpful with reservations over the phone even when we were running late due to traffic. Our party tried the Yellow Country Curry, Green Coconut Curry with mint, seafood curry and the chicken skewers with peanut sauce. Flavor was good but not too spicy! Green coconut curry was the favorite by far! Overall, ambience is amazing, service was great, and food was yummy. I don't know if that's because all their dishes are made ala minute of because their kitchen is too tiny to crank out mass orders. If you have the time, though, the food is worth the wait.
