I don't love Thai food and I have never had Peruvian food. I suggested this place for dinner as a treat for the husband since I always say no to Thai and because we were seeing the new Star Trek movie right after and wouldn't have to leave the parking lot. He raved about the Thai beef salad. That is his favorite dish and he said it is the best he has had in California. We ordered a Peruvian dish that actually looked better on the plate than it did on the menu. It started with a J and was various types of seafood fried in a tempura-like batter. I eat here all the time because it is across the street from my office. Not exactly sure why they have Thai and Peruvian together, but they do. The prices are pretty ridiculously cheap and you can have a sit down meal for about $6. The curry dishes - Panang, Yellow Curry Chicken, Shrimp Curry, tend to be decent but the food is fairly inconsistent. Maybe they have two different cooks but sometimes it is great and sometimes it is bland. The staff is friendly and as I said the prices are great. Had my doubt with Thai and Peruvian going together and I was right. Water tastes like faucet water and the taste even the effected the soda too. Pad Thai is very flavorless and gooey and I crunched on an eggshell. Jalapeño in vinegar is actually jalapeño that goes on nachos from a can. I have been frequenting this restaurant for a few years now and it never disappoints. The food is amazing and the staff is very nice and accommodating. It is nice that they not just remember my name but also my preference for how my favorites dishes are prepared. As the name implies - they serve a variety of dishes - so depending on your craving you can opt for Peruvian or Thai - they now even feature sushi. As I sometimes am a creature of habit I typically order the same dishes - but this varies on who I am dining with at the time. When dining with friends, we typically opt for the Tom Kha Gai soup (thai chicken coconut soup) - it is the perfect combination of hot and sour with generous portions of chicken and mushroom. The Larb Gai (lettuce wraps with ground chicken) is also tasty and a pretty generous portion for an appetizer. Regardless of who I am dining with we never skip the egg rolls - they are amazing - crispy, hot, and delicate and served with a variety of condiments - sweet, spicy, or savory - my favorite is their home made fish sauce prepared with a variety of Thai chilies which adds a salty umami flavor. This amazing fish sauce is also great paired with my ultimate favorite dish, Pad Kee Mao - spicy flat rice noodles with chicken and veggies (peppers, onions, and mushrooms) served over Romaine lettuce. You can customize the spice level as you like. Husband loves the Peruvian dishes and fried rice with chicken, and my daughter loves the Pad Thai and Thai Iced Tea. Udon Noodle Soup is also a favorite of my daughter's and mine and definitely a go to when feeling under the weather. Make sure to order the Sticky Mango Rice for dessert. When offered a glass of water, don't skip it, it is amazing - I am not kidding - not sure what the filtration system they use but it rivals bottled water IMO. Lastly wanted to address something I read in another review noting the service can be a little slow. That may occur occasionally but keep in mind that this is only because they are very popular with folks dining in or opting for take-out which of course keeps them busy, despite this they take time with their guests to ensure they are happy. I had dinner there on New Year's Eve. We went early. When we arrived there was only 2 other tables that appeared to have customers. A short time later it was only our table of 5. I have only eaten there once before but a couple of others have frequented more often and always been happy. We ordered. It appeared to be taking a while especially since we were the only table. Finally they brought when we thought was rice which was going to be shared. But no it was dish for one of the guests. We sat expecting them to bring the other food but finally asked the person who did get served to start eating so her food didn't get cold. Then a second dish come out; waited some more; then 2 others came out along with the rice. The server said "everything ok now". No, one person still had not received her dish. It arrives. Food was good but service was terrible. One person in the group went to use the restroom and came back to table saying there were lot of orders to go sitting waiting to be picked up. I honestly don't know what they would have done had any other customers actually come to restaurant to eat. I realize sometimes you share food but we did not place orders that way other than rice. I think this is one of the best Thai places in Camarillo. I really enjoy their yellow curry, pad Thai and pork ribs. If you're eating in you can enjoy the Thai Peru decor. I just the love the elephant chair that greats you. I will often call ahead here and swing by and take it to go. It's still warm when I get home. The food is rich with flavor and nice an hearty. I like that the pad Thai has veggies also mixed in. The pricing is very reasonable and portion size is great for sharing. I have never had much of a wait while coming here and the service is always very friendly. They serve wine and beer also if you are in need of a drink with your dinner. FOOD: I ordered the chicken Pad Thai lunch special and found it to be a bit too sweet but balanced well with the savory. You can order the pad thai as spicy as you want - mild, medium, hot. I ordered it medium and found no need to pile on hot chili sauce the way I usually do. The lunch specials include a small bowl of soup, followed by a main dish of anything listed on the lunch menu served with a side salad, egg roll, and white rice. SERVICE: service was poor which leads me to three stars accompanied by a story below. Both water & drinks were not offered initially, neither was the option to choose the lunch buffet. I wouldn't have known about it if it wasn't for the reviews and people getting up to fill their plates. If I ever return, I'll definitely take a look as a lunch buffet. Service just got worse after my yelp offer was denied and there was no mediating involved. YELP OFFER: I was eager to try this place out because I had purchased the yelp $12 for $20 offer and was just waiting for the right time to stop by. I was cautious not to come on a Friday or Saturday and understood that the offer did not include the lunch buffet. However, when it was time to pay, the yelp offer was not accepted by the waitress as we had ordered lunch specials. She told me I should have told her about the offer ahead of time so she could have clarified what was applicable and what wasn't. I didn't feel the need to mention the offer, as the fine print should cover all exclusions. Lunch specials were never mentioned. Anyhow, a word for the wise and kind of a *DUH* explanation, make sure when using an offer at Thai Peru, let your waiter know ahead of time to avoid my same encounter I did. Also not sure why businesses sign up for these type of offers when they make them impossible to use. ALL IN ALL: The food was decent and the restaurant was very colorful and well decorated. Not a bad Thai stop if you're hankering for some chicken satay and Pineapple Rice w shrimp. The price is good and the yellow rice is tasty. I like a little more heat than what they offered, but a few flakes of pepper did the trick and we were back in business. It's not a "go out of your way" destination, but if you're in the neighborhood it's well worth the time to try your fave Thai dish. I really got disappointed with the Peruvian food and the lack of health codes in this restaurant. I ordered 2 cans of soda and on top of these cans were dirty and the glasses as well. I ordered a mixed ceviche. It didn't have the Peruvian flavor. No lime juice, no Peruvian chili an no spices at all. The lomo saltado looks like boiled beef with onions an tomatoes. The fried calamari was the only plate that It was good. I recommend you to focus in the Thai food because the Peruvian that you offer it doesn't look like the Real Peruvian Food. If you want to eat Peruvian Food don't visit this place. read more
