Yes, it does take awhile for your order to go through. Luckily, I usually come with friends when we're not quite starving and we have plenty of good conversation before the food comes. The old Subway tables are small, only fitting 4, so I wouldn't advise bringing a large group here. Meals are pretty big, I can comfortably eat 1/2 to 2/3. Make sure you check out the little whiteboard menu next to the register for more options! Most dishes run around $8-9. Really good food. This place used to be a Subway, so it has a weird feel to it; I always just get it for carry out instead. thoughts: 1) the curry dishes are so good. I prefer the normal curry to the green curry, but both are good. I always wind up drinking the juice when I'm done because it's that tasty. 2) at the same time, the curry isn't as filling as I'd like. Ok, this food cannot be beat. I've ordered many times and eaten several things and they're ALL JUST FLAT OUT AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS NOM NOM NOM! Do not go there if you are in a hurry, however. You will get angry and you may vow never to come back, which would be a travesty and, ultimately, your loss. If you want it faster, you can call ahead, wait about 20-30 minutes, then go pick it up. But seriously, eating Thai food in an old Subway is sort of awesome so you should really dine-in if you can handle the wait. Don't expect gushing service. Ignore all the reviews from Chris S about the fat he skimmed off of the panang chicken. The dude doesn't know that the oil doesn't mix, and that its supposed to be that way. I personally love the oil on top. If the oil was supposed to mix, you would not see the oil separating in a lot of Thai dishes. That's just how thai dishes are. They use oil and coconut milk. Holy shmacks! This place is absolutely hysterical! It is absolutely the strangest service I've ever had with the most delicious food in town! I am a weekly regular for the Pad Tai Tofu, the flavors you get in this are insanity! The juiciness in the Tofu is like nothing else on earth. I have been yelled at numerous times eating at this restaurant but it's obvious this has not hindered my desire for this delicious food. I once showed up early after ordering carry out from across town. It took me about 10 minutes to get there from Target and was told it would be 25 minutes. The middle aged man who works there barked at me when I told him I had carry out. I told him I knew I was early and would be fine waiting. He yelled at me in front of the room full of people eating... "You have lunch appointment with friend at 12:30 you don't show up at 12!!" I said I'm sorry I will sit and wait. For 3-4 years now I have tolerated the service here, which has been neutral at best (20% of the time), unfriendly 40% of the time and downright rude 40% of the time, because their food is good and I live not too far from the restaurant, so easy to stop in on way home. I have learned that if they say ready in 15 minutes, that often means 30. This week I reached my limit of tolerance as they chose to argue with me about when I called in; I allowed 35 min, as they told me 20 min on the phone. They stuck a receipt with time stamp of 20 min later than when I had actually called in, twice, both a lady and a man, yelling at me that the receipt doesn't lie. I guess inferring that both myself and the time stamp on my phone are lying? What is most annoying is they chose to argue about it, rather than figure out what the issue was. Turns out my food was done and they were waving the wrong receipt in my face which had same name on it, but different phone number. I'm really, *really*, confused by the people who ordered "Chinese" dishes here, and were disappointed in that they didn't enjoy them. Why would you go to a Thai place and order lo mein? That being said; I really enjoy Thai Siam! I typically order Panang Shrimp or Pineapple Curry, and am always happy. Five years in a row, I have gone here for my birthday dinner. Yes, the yellow subway tables/benches are a bit off putting, and yes, the place does get crowded; but I don't care. Let me start by saying, as far as the physical restaurant goes, I hate it, while my husband kind of likes it for its no frills appeal. As stated in other reviews, it's inside of an old Subway. What most other reviews that state this fail to mention is that NOTHING has changed since its Subway days, including the peeling yellow walls and tables. The service is spotty, depending on the mood the man behind the food is in. They tend to take forever and since it's a tiny place to begin with, there really isn't anywhere to wait. Nothing classy about this place whatsoever. That being said, if you like street style Thai, this is the place to go in Lawrence. Great Pad Thai, decent yellow curry (not my favorite, but still tasty), and my husband's pineapple curry chicken always tastes great when he lets me steal a bite. The only thing I've found to be downright unappetizing is their Thai Iced Tea. Color was weird and it smelled and tasted like a cheap cigar had been snuffed in it. In my opinion the food is way to expertly crafted for the price. Most Lawrence foodies know that you get standardized slop everywhere but here. There is no other place you should eat Thai food in Lawrence! The service at this place can be pretty horrible. They use one of their tables as a storage unit. Almost every time I go in I see someone get scolded for ordering incorrectly (use the numbers and don't ask for substitutions!) or attempting to use the restroom w/o ordering something. This place is very different for Lawrence. If you are looking for some real Thai food this is the place to go. I would first start off by letting you know this isn't a Panda Express. If you want that type of dining environment go to Panda Express. This place is a converted Subway and it's ran by one family. They have their table where they keep things on. Sometimes it has donuts or sweets, who cares this is part of the dining experience. When you order they might seem rude. Wouldn't you if you have been cooking Thai Food for 20 years. Deal with it. Don't talk back to them either, just take it. All of the food is cooked fresh. When you come in to order you will see cooking going on in the back ground. They have a huge menu to choose from. The food is good. The customer service is HORRIBLE. My husband and I have been here several times. We went tonight and since the Covid-19 stuff has been going around we call when we get to the restaurant to make sure our food is ready before we go in to pick it up. We did just that here too. I really don't understand why people say the family who owns this restaurant is rude. I think Lawrence folk are all obsessed with midwestern nice, but not everyone is going to fall at your feet with fake niceness. I went for the first time to this place today with my girlfriends and their kids. Prior to that, I had tried Thai Siam's food when a friend invited me over her place for some take out. I remember enjoying dinner mainly because of the company, however, I didn't think the food (we had Pad Thai and Red Curry) was exceptionally great having been to Thailand numerous times - I know how real Thai food tastes like. I felt that the food here has been 'Americanized' and well, I really have no problem with that. Whatever sells here, right? Anyway, back to today's visit. While deciding what to order, a lady walked in, looked at us and sighed that exasperated sigh and said something in Thai, which I understood (I speak enough Thai to get by) as "Oh, why are they so many?" 'They' meaning me, my three girlfriends and their three young children. Why wouldn't they want the business we're bringing? Beats me! After standing there for about 5 minutes and no one asking us what we'd like to order, I finally made eye contact with the male staff member (possibly owner?) and he snapped, "What? Are you ready to order? You should stand behind the counter and not back there!" Back where? We were behind the counter. So to appease him, I took one short step towards the counter and then that's when he asked what we'd like to order. Weird. It cannot be a cultural thing because I'm Asian, I have many Thai friends, I've been to Thailand and this is not their culture to be mean. It just isn't! So don't think it is cultural (It ain't a language barrier either, the guy spoke good enough English to me). They're just plain odd. So oddness aside, I was polite (because seriously, you shouldn't be mean back to the people making your food) and ordered. 45 MINUTES later, we get our food. The poor kids were telling us that they were so hungry. We got there at 12pm. Food was at our table at 12.45pm. In fairness, the food was good. I ordered Chicken with Garlic Sauce. For $7.50 it was a good price for a decent lunch. However, like what other reviewers said, the place is a little dumpy. What's up with that table with all that garbage on it? Bottom line, the food was alright. But it was the experience dining in there that left a bad taste in my mouth. Never coming back. I'll be dining at Oriental Bistro, where the service is amazing and the food worth coming back for again and again. So here's the thing: This place is unbelievable when it comes to the food. I ate there once a week when I lived in Lawrence (just moved a month ago). Everything I've had here has been amazing. I'm especially a huge fan of the Chicken Pineapple Curry. However, there are a couple caveats I want to put on this place. First, call your order in and get it to-go!! It's fresh food and most of the time they're really busy. So it's going to take longer. I know not to order from there when I'm on a time crunch. Second, they are not the friendliest people. I've been yelled at before by the owners for one of their employees screwing up, and I still went there once a week. In addition, since they saw me consecutively for 3 years, once a week, you would imagine they would have tried to remember my name? But again they're really busy, so I wasn't too heartbroken when they never remembered who I was. I can turn a blind eye to the service if the food is this amazing. However, I did stop tipping them after I was scolded by the woman owner. So if you get easily offended, I wouldn't really recommend this place, but if you don't, then prepare for some amazing and very authentic Thai food. read more

The food at Thai Siam is good, but the service is beyond awful. We once went in for carry out and were told it would take 20 minutes. TWO HOURS later we got our food. Sure, it was Valentines Day (I think 2006), and sure they were busy. But it was ridiculous. After an hour we asked for a refund, as we wanted to leave, but they would not give us one. We ended up getting beer from the liqour store next door and hanging out in the parking lot while we waited. Other times I've been to Thai Siam and my food has tasted like soap. Also, the Pad Kee Mao is heavy on sprouts, so if you ask for no sprouts, you get a very small portion of food. I've been to Thai Siam twice, and after the first time I would have given it 4 stars based solely on delicious food. On that day I ate tofu pad kee mao and tofu green curry and both were very good. I've eaten lots of thai food in Chicago, Portland and other cities that have lots of excellent thai food. Although neither if those dishes compared to the best thai food I've had, they exceeded my expectations. The best Thai place in Lawrence! I have been coming here every Wednesday with a group of friends for about 3 years. The food is always hot and tasty! I always get one of the curries, which is plenty of food. Sure, the owners aren't exactly the friendliest, but they have never been rude either. Recently my friends moved away so I have been getting take out instead. I usually get there 5 mins after they say it will be ready, and it is always ready for me. Thai Siam is the best Thai food in town. I honestly eat there AT LEAST once per week, if not more. It takes a while because everything is made fresh, but its well worth the wait. I am always polite and the service is always exceptional. I think the people complaining of bad service are just impatient because they're used to fast food and quick take-out. The owners and workers recognize me because I eat there so much and are very polite and often ask me how my mother is doing. The food is good but not great. My favorite dish is the Green Curry. I was slightly disappointed in the Pad Thai and Panang Curry. The Phad Thai I found to be a bit dry and lacking that hint of lime so often found in other Phad Thai. The Curry in general is on the runny side in case you are one who prefers thicker. The bad customer service was tolerable when the food was excellent. Kind of a "Soup Nazi" thing, however the food has gone downhill and the customer service has gotten even worse.
