So I started a new job by food carts, I've sworn them off to save myself from myself! I decided I would get Thai since I forgot my food at home. I ordered the chicken pad Thai and crab Rangoon. After I paid I realized that it's fast food Thai so the pad Thai was pre made and spice was added by seasoning. Noodles were soggy and you can taste the powder. In town on business and decided to grab a quick bite at the food trucks. I love Thai but generally don't like spicy food so I get "mild". I ordered the cashew chicken which came with white rice. I would say half the entree was carrots, onions and red chili peppers. Large pieces of chicken made up 1/3 of the entree. While I found the dish very tasty it was "barley" mild. Thai food here is absolutely amazing. This was our first time and we will become regulars so that we can try everything on their menu. The atmosphere is great and relaxing. The staff is super friendly and very prompt in serving their very tasty dishes. We tried the dumplings, pork rolls, coconut curry, and pad see ew. Everything was amazing and we purposely made it so we had left overs. We finished our meal with a mango desert. Wow it was good. This just down the street from my house, and it's amazing, ordered the sai ua last night, delicious. They have the best Thai coffee. Worth a trip just for that. But everything is good here, have had 4 different dishes. I'm partial to noodles. But the red curry in the sai ua was just the right spicy and flavor! They can make your dish as hot as you can want! We've ordered carry-out twice from Thai Sky on SE Division, and both times we were very happy with the food. The food is tasty, very fresh, and piping hot. The salad rolls are *huge*. The stir-fried eggplant was excellent (if a tad salty) and I was pleased that it was not half-filled with onion like it is in some other Thai restaurants. The tofu in the stir-fries is generous and tasty and is not that weird super-fried puffy kind that you sometimes get elsewhere. While Thai Sky is not a vegan or GF establishment, we had no trouble getting a variety of vegan and GF options. It's great to have a Thai restaurant in this area! read more

Came here to pick up some food for dinner after finding it on yelp. It's a pretty small food truck located on 5th Avenue. The prices are pretty decent, in fact I got Pad Thai for $6. It was pretty yummy and tasty with a good flavor and they gave a decent amount. The service was fast and they even take credit card using an iPad. It was the first really chilly day in Portland's winter and I felt the need for something spicy to warm me up and clear out my sinuses. This sure did the trick. I rolled up around ten to four and a very pleasant gal took my order. I ordered the Pad Khee Mao with chicken. She let me choose my spiciness level on a scale of one to ten which is so much nicer and more specific than the normal choices of mild, medium, or hot! I chose a 7/10. More on that later. I give this five stars for a food cart for a few reasons: delicious chow, generous portions, very affordable prices, and speedy service. I have been here twice now and both times I've been very happy with everything. The Pad Khee Mao was the perfect thing for a chilly day. It came garnished with a mound of fresh bean sprouts and cilantro. I overdid it just a smudge on spiciness. I'd go for a 5 or 6 next time. I ended up blowing my nose between bites. It was a bit of a face melter. Also, they have sturdy to go boxes that I like to reuse as Tupperware. All in all, Thai Sky is definitely worth a try if you like thai food and you are looking for something quick, simple, and delicious. read more

Thai Sky is great! The food is delicious and the staff are very awesome! This cart is a family owned and run business, and the owner makes recipes his mother taught him when he was young man in Thailand. I see a few reviews that negatively mention their steam tray - I have not had a bad experience flavor wise or food quality wise. I go to Thai Sky a lot and have talked to the staff at length, and I know that they are making the specials fresh all of the time to keep up demand. Seriously, there are always so many people ordering and this is a great way to quickly serve their customers. Sometimes I'm totally pressed for time and it's nice that in the heart of lunch rush I can quickly get some good Thai food. They also cook anything to order which is nice if you have the time, and want something outside of the specials. Very generous portions too. The pumpkin curry is incredible, as is the Pad Kee Mao and Tom Kha soup. All of their food is great, and if you aren't sure what to get, ask them for a recommendation! read more

I just got back from here for lunch and it was really disappointing. I've eaten Thai food all over the country and in Thailand many times, so please don't ever, ever serve me pad Thai that tastes strongly of ketchup. Sad. It's hard to stand out from a crowd of over 600 street vendors and 15% of them being Thai. This was the quietest street vendor on the block, so we decided to check this one out. The gentleman operating the truck is very friendly and we wound up chatting with him for a bit. We ordered the Pad See Ew ($5.00), which he made in a few minutes. He handed over a heavy Styrofoam platter that I could easily guess weighed about 2 lbs. When we opened it, we were treated to a rather aesthetically pleasing Pad See Ew. It contained a combination of julienned carrots, bean sprouts, cilantro sprigs, broccoli, thin slices of beef, and an generous serving of flat rice noodles. Served on top was a nice sprinkle of chopped peanut bits and a lime wedge for good measure. I was surprised at how much food we got for $5.00, easily feeding two people or one very hungry person. The noodles were soft and far from greasy. The sliced beef was tender and flavorful. The added bonus of all the vegetables really gave this dish some texture, from the springy and refreshing bean sprouts, to the crunchy broccoli. Combined, it had the the perfect level of sweetness, making for a rather pleasing Pad See Ew that I'm sure many will appreciate. I have to venture to say that Thai Sky serves a Pad See Ew that is a step above the norm, and possibly even doing better than a lot of Thai restaurants on 9th Ave in New York City and Elmhurst in Queens, New York. The Pad Thai and Pineapple Curry here was incredibly tasty. The Pad Thai was my favorite out of the two - the peanut Pad Thai was strong and flavorful, unlike some of the other Thai restaurants I've been to that have bland Pad Thai noodles. They also have chili flakes, crushed peanuts and other condiments on the counter so you can flavor your order to your liking! Moreover, the Pineapple curry was mediocre. The curry flavor itself was not very flavorful and tasted somewhat watered down - I would've preferred the curry flavor to be more seasoned. Disclaimer: this is only for the Pumpkin Curry and Iced Coffee I love to check out the food carts at PDX but I almost never get anything since there are so many and I find them overwhelming. It was getting late and hunger took over so I got lucky with Thai Sky. I ordered the pumpkin curry with chicken, and it was really delicious, so spicy! The bell peppers and green beans were crisp and the star of the show, the pumpkin/squash was al dente! Seriously, I've ordered Pumpkin Curry at other places and hate it when the pumpkin is hard. I wish I could have tried other dishes, but you will not go wrong with the pumpkin curry. It did have the perfect amount of spice and we pretty much demolished it. Location: Food trucks in Portland make for an interesting concept in that most I've visited actually seem more like "mobile" takeout places much the same way as "mobile" homes. Technically the trucks can move, but they all seem to sit conveniently across several locations downtown. Thai Sky sits on the intersection between Oak and Fifth along a row with other food trucks. The primary difference is Thai Sky is usually open for dinner until 8pm, a time when crowds are substantially smaller than lunch (and is incidentally the only meal when I can actually go). Downtown parking is plentiful, particularly past 7pm. There's even a (sort of) eating area on the sidewalk by the truck. Food: Right up my alley - cheap, fresh, and delicious. Every dish is made to order, right in front of you (which means it's fresh and hot - right off the wok!). In a blind taste test, I think the food would compare favorably against most Thai takeout/casual restaurants. Most dishes end up having the same sort of taste (stir fried basil, onions, and bell peppers), but that's hardly a bad thing if you're into basil. You can also specify the level of spice in your dish, but note this place has an "authentically" Thai scale. I'm usually one for challenging myself with really spicy dishes, but their "8/10" is pretty legit. To make your next day easier, I would recommend topping out at a 6/10. =) I've honestly not had anything bad from the menu, but their mainstays are definitely the starch (rice/noodle/rice noodle) dishes. I'm a big fan of their Pad See Ew and Yakisoba (fried noodles - not sure how authentically Japanese, but hey, it's tasty), as well as some of the more vegetable oriented stir frys - the Basil, Onion, and Bell Pepper or the Eggplant Basil. As far as protein goes, Shrimp and Chicken are winners, while the beef leaves something to be desired (can be a bit dry and tasteless). Service: Service is fast, efficient, and very friendly. The owner clearly loves his job, and always has a smile on his face. As every dish is made to order, and there is only one chef, I suspect wait times can really add up when there are many folks in line, but considering the quality of the dishes I'm impressed by the speed at which he can turn out the dishes. Besides, waiting for freshly-cooked Thai food isn't bad at all when you can strike up a good conversation while he's cooking. Usually with food this cheap one doesn't expect much from service, but at Thai Sky you can have the best of both worlds - cheap, quality food AND the owner always seems to be in a great mood. Extra points for me here. I also like that even if you don't have cash, they still take most credit cards with a nominal fee ($0.50). Very convenient, although a bit awkward when the credit card reader doesn't work. Luckily even in this case there are Chase and Bank of America ATMs within close walking distance. Value: When one considers its quality, this place is phenomenal value. I don't think there's a single entree priced above $7. Soft drinks ($1) and teas are also very reasonably priced. Portions are absolutely gigantic (definitely Asian American portions). I would consider myself a pretty big eater, but let's just say I don't plan on going to the gym after a meal here if I finish the entree (which I always do because it's delicious). Honestly I'm not sure how these guys (and other food trucks in Portland) make money. Considering the quality of food and portion size, I'm not sure if I've had Thai food with the same price-to-goodness ratio outside Thailand. Overall: A go-to for takeout and a solid 4 stars. Food stacks up well against most Thai restaurants I've been to, and the value is simply unbeatable. A real gem. read more

To be honest, I only get one thing from this cart. They've got this meal that is 3 (skinny) skewers of chicken over white rice for $4. That price includes peanut sauce, which I skip and instead add soy sauce, this siracha,sweet chili combination sauce, maybe some crushed peanuts and maybe some lime. If I want to be 'healthy', I can get brown rice for only $.50 more. Sometimes, it's the best meal I eat all day. Other days, meh. read more

4 reasons I eat at this cart on 5th and oak weekly. 1) wonderful taste.... best ever, and I've tried a lot of Thai places. My brother lived in Thailand for a couple years. 2) portion size is very generous. 3) best price for the portion sizes 4) Maybe my favorite part is that I love that they have about 8 items every day that are already in steaming trays ready to serve up, so you don't have to wait! They also have many other dishes that they cook up fresh if you prefer. Best tasting items: 1) Pad Kee Mao- very spicy and so flavorful. Put a nice spoon of chopped peanuts on and squeeze a couple wedges of lime on top. I take it made with chicken and with cilantro and bean sprouts on top...YUM!! 2) Coconut Milk Soup- This is the best soup in the world. I have tried it in a lot of places, and for some reason, no one can touch this! I take it with chicken, but prefer it without any meat. I don't want to write this review, but feel obligated to the yelp community to do it. I was extremely disappointed with my lunch from Thai Sky today. It has been over 2 years since last eating at Thai Sky after a questionable plate of Pad Thai. I had forgotten why I didn't return until I had handed over my 5 bucks. The food is kept in warming trays with monster heat lamps right next to the window. The noodles are limp, over cooked, and the chicken was all the awkward dark cuts and overly dry. I can handle dark chicken meat, but at least allow it to keep some moisture. As I watched the server scoop my helping of Pad Thai, I promptly called an audible. I needed something else as the nightmare of Pad Thai past returned to me. I asked to try some of the curry, settling on the peanut curry with chicken. It looked ok from the outside, but once I put the first bite to my mouth, my understanding of why I hadn't returned was cemented. The veggies (carrots, broccoli, bell peppers) were all over cooked, flavorless, and tasted like something you would feed a baby. The chicken was the same darkish, dry flavorless chunks, and the peanut curry was overly watered down and lacked the punch I like from normal curry dishes. I was so disappointed that midway through my meal I had to stop. I was still hungry, but I couldn't make myself eat anymore. I was done. And unlike the Terminator, I don't think I'll be back. For their own sake, I hope that their tofu dishes are better, my fear is that their veggies will suffer the same problems as all the other dishes as they sit under the heat lamp. It's basically Thai Food from a mall fast food joint. That's not what I expect from a cart. I expect more. Make fresh food and make people happy. read more

Really really good simple thai food. Please get the tofu peanut curry sauce. Its the best and worth lining up for it. I just love a dish of chili basil tofu with pepper and a side of thai ice tea. $1 thai ice tea! I don't know any other place in Portland that serves it so cheap and still good. My favorite of all the Thai food carts. I go here weekly, and they definitely know me by now! It's great if you want to quickly grab some awesome Pad Thai. The chicken satay rocks and is another of my favorites, and the pineapple fried rice is wonderful. They also have a great Thai iced tea and all their prices are super affordable. Frequently, I have enough food for 2 meals, which is even more awesome. They also accept GoBox (if you don't know what that is, look it up!!) Definitely recommend these guys to anyone looking for good Thai food downtown! read more

If I can give it a zero star I would. Pre-made food in a steam tray waiting and who knows how long it's been sitting out. The best thing about food cart is that they make your food when you order! But not this cart. I order your typical phad Thai w/chicken and not 10 secs later my food was ready. One of the worst food cart on 5th ave if not the worst. I wouldn't recommend anyone going here.
