The service was far less impressive. The staff was unwelcoming and unpleasant. It seems as though any request I might make would be a tremendous inconvenience. Went to Thai Smile for lunch with a Frankfort friend yesterday. Small, very casual place. Interior is old school and not much to look at. Walked in at noon. Only two available tables. Clearly, a very busy, popular lunch spot. Even a steady stream of patrons coming for takeout. Ordered the #21, Drunk'n Chicken with 3-Star heat. You can order as many Stars as you like for heat preference. Used their hot sauce to add more to my dish. Tasty, but could have used more chicken. Note that there is no longer table service. Once you've selected your dish from the menu, you go to the cashier to place your order. My friend knows the owner, and he said it has been difficult finding staff. This place never disappoints. The basil chicken has been my go-to order here for over 15 years. It's so good I rarely ever order anything else. That said, everything I have ever tried here has been fantastic too. The pumpkin balls desert is a seasonal item that has to be tried. The pumpkin ball look like pumpkin spooned out with a melon baller and put into a bowl of warm sweet coconut sauce. It's hard to describe how delicious & unique this desert is. read more

We're Lexingtonians, and have long heard of the Thai Smile goodness in Frankfort. We've waited and waited to go, trying to co-ordinate a visit to Frankfort with dinner. Those stars never aligned, so we just drove out there to try Thai Smile. We had a great dinner, and really enjoyed the place, but we'll probably never come here again. No harm no foul, just nothing here worth the drive considering Lexington has great Thai food only minutes away. If we lived in Frankfort, this would definitely be our spot. My friends and I were having a game night and we ordered a multitude of entrees to go. I had Pad See Ew which was so delicious. It contained stir-fried noodles with chicken, broccoli and eggs in a sweet soy sauce topped with ground peanuts. I ate myself into a food coma with leftovers for lunch the next day. You can pick the spice level which I chose level 2. The one thing I would have changed was adding more broccoli to the dish, but I was very much satisfied and would go there again. read more

If you have been wondering where the locals eat in Frankfort, you have found one of our gems! Congratulations. This place is never a let down. The food is always hot and fresh. They keep your water cup filled with ice water and the food is delicious. The only soda they sell is in bottles, so keep that in mind if you are craving some carbonation. The service always feels a bit rushed. Sometimes I go in and they're not that busy but the cashier speaks and works so quickly that I feel like they want me gone ASAP. Maybe this is because the cashier wants to get back to playing his game on his iPad? Nevertheless, he is pretty friendly regardless of how quick he is moving. He also offers my daughter candy when she is with me. Their lunch specials are reasonably priced, around $7-8 and their dinner specials are more around $10-12. I work in Frankfort and Thai Smile is one of our favorite spots for lunch. It's best to arrive shortly after 11am or wait until around 1pm, though, as it's a very popular place and you're likely to have to wait in line for a table if you show up at noon. The menu is sizable and includes all the things you'd expect at a Thai restaurant. My favorites are the Rama Chicken (and the servers always point out that it has peanut sauce and make sure that's not a problem) and the Chicken Pad Thai. A friend of mine is a vegetarian and always substitutes tofu for chicken with no problems. The egg rolls are amazing. The service can be lacking at times, because they're so busy. And you checkout at the counter, where there's always a line. The guy at the counter kind of barks your total at you and I always feel like I'm being too slow to suit him, even when I have my credit card in hand and I'm ready to go. This little spot is hidden away in a half empty shopping center in Frankfort. The service is always expedient and attentive. Some of the Thai owners/servers are a lot of fun and will joke around with you while you order. The egg rolls are crispy and hot. I had the Pad Kee Mao, which is stir fried rice noodles, chicken, basil, tomatoes, broccoli, egg (which I could not detect), and bamboo shoots in a sweet and sour sauce. You can order based on up to a five star scale (five being the spiciest, Thai hot). I do not think even Thai hot is particularly spicy, but this may be a personal preference/disposition. I asked for two extra cups of chili sauce. The first cup kicked it up a notch, but the second one changed the texture with too many seeds, without adding more spice (my fault, not theirs). Overall, though, good food. They also had a volcano chicken I was interested in (friend chicken with garlic sauce and bell pepper). They also had multiple combinations of meat, sweet, spicy, and even fruity (pineapple). Lots of things to try over serval visits! Large portions so there are plenty of leftovers. read more

Thai Smile is an office go-to for weekday lunches for us. I had been to the Thai Smile in Richmond before because my dad works there, but I frequent the one in Frankfort because it's near my office. The service is pretty in-and-out because it gets very crowded during lunch hour. Lots of legislators and businesspeople fill the restaurant right at 12. They have a ton of options and a huge variety. I somehow always order the garlic chicken with 4/5 stars of spice. It's served with rice and broccoli and is so delish. They bring you a small bowl of mystery soup before your entree that I am not a fan of but everyone I've gone with likes. The service is abrupt but that's understandable considering how busy they are. Thai Smile is the very first Thai restaurant I tried in the US and I was impressed from the get go. In the beginning, I kept ordering only the egg fried rice, which is, by the way, ammmazingg!!! Later, i started trying out the noodles. The fried chicken egg noodle bowl, I didn't particularly like it. The pad see ew was little on the sweeter side for me. The pad thai was great, but i don't really favor peanuts. And then, one fine day, I tried the Pad Kee Mao and I was HOOKED! It's my go-to dish, every single time. In fact, I order it in other Thai restaurants too while I travel and try to judge them based on how close it comes to tasting like TS! Since it is delicious, generously portioned food that they're offering, they're always jam packed during lunch hours. The wise thing to do would be to order to go by calling in a good 20 minutes before you go in. But I do like eating in, somehow it all tastes even better. Everyone loves it here but me. I have tried so many times to enjoy myself but it never works out. The food is the star here but the service reminds me of the "soup nazi" on Seinfeld. I never seem to have any time to look at the menu. They try to rush you here and it's so unpleasant if you do not know the menu or what to eat. Locals get the same dishes over and over but I'm not a local. I have no idea what to get. I guess the curry is popular but I don't like curry. I don't know how to order it or what level of spice to get. The staff is always in a hurry. Rushing the patrons. There's never any time to check out the food options. I hate it. This time we were asked what we wanted at the register. I have no idea dude. Ugh. Grrrr. They are always in such a hurry to close or rush people through. I'd like to be seated and peruse the menu please. But I dare not say a thing. I can sense the patrons here are used to it. They seem to fear the "Big Boss" owner. Rush rush rush. Order up and get out. Follow the system. It sucks. I don't like the system. I'd like to learn about the food here or see what's popular. But there's no opportunity for that. People stand around and stare of you don't move it along and get with the program. Embarrassing. I basically ate fried rice that came with my food which I don't care for at all-- due to the lack of choice /menu and the pressure to hurry it up. As a person who has been very poor and has suffered, I'm grateful for my meals. I'm happy to be able to eat in a nice restaurant. I know it's family owned here and I respect that. Well worth finding. I never would have found this place without reading another Yelper who noted the Day's Inn plaza and semi-deserted strip mall. And the place was hopping at an early lunch. Speedy service in a pleasant atmosphere (once you get inside), with quite good food. The curry was great, and the "Volcano" chicken was good. Curry was ordered medium but was spicy hot. Volcano chicken was ordered hot but came out medium. Not many places to eat in Frankfort, but those who know have found Thai Smile. I'm smiling. read more

My son and I went to Thai Smile for lunch. The restaurant was buzzing with smiling staff and the restaurant was full of customers but they have plenty seating. We started with the egg rolls and wonton soup. Hands down the best egg rolls of any restaurant in Frankfort. The wonton soup was good too. My son ordered the pad kee mow which came out on a generous huge plate and was rich with pad noodles, tomatoes, bean sprouts, broccoli and spices and chicken. He was in heaven. I had the chicken red curry. Let me tell you the rich spicy coconut curry blended with the generous chicken and bamboo shoots. It was the best curry I have had in decades. You've got to try Thai Smile. It's fantastic food, and the atmosphere is nice and laid back / casual. The food is served quickly, and the staff is always friendly. My favorite dish is the green curry. It's out of this world good. Plus they let you pick how spicy you want your food...a big plus. The Thai places in Lexington cater to a milder crowd, and have become way too bland. Also, don't pass up the appetizers...the portions are big enough to be an entire meal, and they all good. The spring rolls are my favorite, but I always have to try the special. I've got to warn you it doesn't look like much from the outside and it's a little out of the way, but this is the place to go if you are ever hungry in Frankfort. My advice though is get there either really early, or come for dinner. Thai Smile is an old staple for state employees, and it fills up for lunch during the week. Sometimes it can take over an hour to get a table. If you're not up for the wait stay clear between 11 Am and 2 Pm on weekdays. Dinner is a far better option, and the food is usually a little better too. If you're ever in Frankfort ignore the chain fast food up by the highway...if you can make it past Panera you're gold...Thai Smile's right down the street...near the Big Lots. This Thai place is tucked back in a mostly abandoned strip mall off of 127 in Frankfort. Despite the lack of visibility they were doing a brisk lunch business on a Tuesday during the Arctic Vortex. Yes, we ventured out despite the real possibility of being transported into another Arctic dimension. That didn't happen, as far as we know. What did happen was some pretty good Thai food. The lunch menu is a bit limited. They have the usual suspects but there doesn't seem to be a choice of protein. I ordered Pad Ke Mao. It came with chicken. Chicken is not my favorite because more often than not white meat chicken is cooked to death leaving it very dry. It was overcooked in this case however the noodles were a good shade of al dente. I ordered Thai hot but alas, they did not believe me. It still had a great flavor I just would have preferred some heat. This was especially disappointing because they had a hand written sign on the door warning of the extreme heat in this weeks batch of chilis. The gf had Chicken Pad Thai. She would have preferred tofu but again this didn't seem to be a choice. This could have been due to the very heavy lunch crowd they were having. They also didn't ask us if we wanted any drinks. A runner filled our water glasses and left the pitcher. This worked out just fine. We will definitely return and give it another go. read more

As a former Frankfort resident, the one thing I REALLY miss about Kentucky's capital is Thai Smile. Despite some decent offerings in Louisville, nothing can match Thai Smile! I used to come here frequently for dining in and almost always ordered the chicken pad thai, but more recently I've been getting take-out. After placing your order, it's done very quickly--I've never waited more than 20 minutes for my meal. On the last visit, I had the beef and broccoli with garlic sauce and it was heavenly. My husband ordered a curry and some curry puffs, so for those three dishes, our order came out to be $27. A little pricey, but the taste is worth the cost.
