Their peanut sauce wasn't peanut forward but I liked it anyways because of the sweet and sour taste. The pad Thai could be more smoky, but it was perfect texture, great taste, and I loved how they added so much tofu! Tom yum was good as well. Its the only Thai restaurant we found that was open late so we went for it. We were in town and overnight stay Appearance - lacking in everything I'm used to seeing in a Thai restaurant. I've been loving the food at this place since 2008. Candidly, I tend to stick to the same items, but the food has been consistent in my intermittent visits. It's not overly glamorous in here, but I'm not there for the decor. I just want a satisfying meal. I have noticed less people in here lately as the stores around expand and change. Thai Stick has been our regular spot for Thai Food for over a decade now. Although there are other Thai restaurants closer to our house, we haven't strayed much from this place much at all. Prior to Covid, Thai Stick used to stay open late, sometimes after midnight, especially during the weekends. Their late-night hours likely had a big influence on our loyalty to the restaurant. The food, too, of course. Our favourites are: LARB CHICKEN ($13.95) - Tangy, bright, and yummy. Wish that it had rice powder for a slight crunch in texture and roasted fragrance, a bit more mint, and whole lettuce leaves to eat in cups. THAI STICK SALAD (with no BBQ Chicken for $10.95) - LOVE this salad, but often need to order extra dressing/Peanut Sauce ($3.00) because the serving is generous. YELLOW CURRY (with Chicken for $17.95) - Creamy deliciousness. PUMPKIN CURRY (with Vegetables or Chicken for $17.95) - DJ's go-to curry because he loves pumpkin. GARLIC & PEPPER Beef ($17.95) - Very flavourful, goes perfectly well with steamed white rice. PAD THAI (with Chicken for $16.95) - Of all the Thai noodle dishes, Pad Thai is DJ's #1. Thai Stick's version is not bad, but I have had tastier at other places. Sweet Sticky Rice & Mango ($9.00) - The mango is always very soft. Roti (Thai Sweet Pan Cake, $5.00) - A simple, but delightful dessert. Thai Ice Tea ($3.00) - What is a Thai meal without Thai Ice Tea? Order it here, you won't be disappointed. As for the venue, the place would benefit from a good cleaning and maybe even a renovation. The building is run-down with carpet coming undone at wall edges, filthy window sills, dirty baseboards, chipped paint, etc. The women's restroom is surprisingly clean, but the hallway that leads to the bathrooms is like a storage space with cardboard boxes of supplies stacked against the wall. Service is nice, though, even when ordering to go. At our last take-out order, we were given a complimentary order of Roti. Ordered the ground chicken pad Kaprow via Uber Eats. Usually love ground chicken with this dish as it soaks up the yummy sauce with the rice. Well, this dish was so bland it was terrible. No peppers. No spice. No flavor. After placing the order, I called the restaurant to ask for it to be spicy. No answer. Phone went to voicemail. The rock cod fish with the sweet tamarind sauce was exquisite, and the texture of the fried fish with something that taste like bread crumbs was just so good to bite into. The dishes are consistently delicious and truly taste Thai, clearly reflecting the owner's hands-on approach--he has been preparing the food himself since the restaurant opened and still takes time to personally greet dine-in customers. During our visit, the owner shared that the restaurant's lease may not be renewed and that they are currently expected to remain only until September. When you walk into this restaurant, you feel like it's more of a home feeling as you're immediately greeted by staff and seated with a friendly smile. The place is simple, but the food is soo good! I've been here many times and the food never disappoints. My favourite is the minced chicken, Thai spicy hot level with a fried egg on top. My friend ordered pad see ewe noodles with beef and looked and tasted so good! When you're having your meal, staff check on you and make sure you're satisfied. The owner and cook Paul is often in the kitchen making the delicious meals, but will occasionally walk around and chat with customers. The ambiance feels more like you're having a family dinner at a home with a relaxed atmosphere and conversations with staff. The price point is where you'd expect for a good, filling meal. Was craving Thai food and was in the area. Unfortunately, this place did not hit the spot. The papaya salad was lacking in flavor. It was rather bland and did not have the sour, sweet and spice i was yearning for. The chicken pad Thai also lacked flavor and did not meet expectations. The pineapple fried rice had Chinese sausage in it which I found strange. It lacked the savory flavor I'm use to from having tried this at many other Thai establishments. We were the only one eating there and I'm not surprised why. The carpet also looked like it had not been vacuumed in months. The chicken satay was good but the peanut sauce was super watered down. As soon we walked in the hostess was very welcoming, as we ordered the chef came out to make sure our order was correct since my husband has a seafood allergy to confirm. He was so nice our food was ready in about 10 min very hot and fresh. The waitress was very attentive to us. I get home open the soup it seemed thicker than ive ever experienced ever before. I thought, okay maybe they use coconut cream. I dont know, im feeling from the second i opened it. Is this heavy cream with milk? I thought, nooooo. Why would they do that? This was so disappointing, I don't know where to start. So much so, that I didn't want to review it. The restaurant being so empty on a Friday, should have been a warning. It's almost, like they've given up. The most striking thing, was there were no tables set for customers, at all. No napkins, silverware or menus. The decor was also so bland, that the restaurant didn't say Thailand... There were random items, boxes, a tv and a ladder leaning against the wall, in plain view. The one positive was our waitress, who was so nice and friendly, that she is the reason for the star. It went south, as soon as we received our water, sprite, and Thai iced tea. One glass of water had some white vegetable looking thing floating in it. The second glass of water, was so stain, you wouldn't drink from it. And When my girlfriend poured her sprite into the third glass of ice... Some green stuff came floating to the top! Luckily, my iced tea seemed normal and it was delicious. Right after we noticed this, we took a better look at the glasses and the silverware. They were so caked with hard water stains, that they looked dirty. The silverware was even worse. My girlfriend immediately said, "I don't wanna eat here"... I went to the waitress and asked, "can we please have our food to go", food was bagged and we left. On the way home we contemplated on going somewhere else to eat, but we had already paid $65 for this meal. We figured, let's go home, set the table and go from there. We should had stopped at Fiddlers Green. The See Ewe with Tofu was completely flavorless and I mean all of it. My Garlic Pepper Prawns were also flavorless and I honestly tasted no garlic. The Egg Rolls, also flavorless. Last but not least was the steamed rice. I've had better day old rice... In no way am I saying the food tasted bad, just no Thai flavor. It's like calling Taco Bell, Mexican food. The only item that tasted from Thailand, was the Thai Iced Tea. We were so confused after our meal. I'm not sure if anything here is made fresh daily. I don't understand why some reviewers are so negative, hostile really, about Thai Stick. I really think they are being unfair to this restaurant. My wife have been ordering from Thai Stick during short stays in the area over the past 10 years or more.The restaurant seems to do a very modest eat-in business, which worried us the last time we were here. But we almost always order to pick-up and take back to our room in a hotel across the street. The food is good, portions ample, and ready when promised, without any long delays that we have experienced elsewhere. We like Thai food, and I would rate Thai Stick a B or B- overall. Last night we ordered chicken larb, green papaya salad, and spicy eggplant. You can dial the hotness to your own preference. All the dishes were good, and we ended up with leftovers. I've given an overall rating of 4 stars. I think the food deserves a 3-1/2, with an additional 1/2-star for ease of ordering and quick service. Such a sweet homey vibe the minute you go in. It's not your typical fancy decorated Thai restaurant but that is not what you are going for. You are automatically greeted by a genuine worker, who Sits you down while You are provided ample time to choose from their pretty straightforward menu. The pad thai is hands down one of our favorite flavor. It is not the typical saucy pad thai, which I love. The panang curry, satay chicken and bbq chicken were delicious. But I would have to say the pad thai is my fave. The night was wrapped up with a little history of this gem that has stood in Millbrae for over 30 years.
