I ordered the Tom Kha soup, and I wanted to compare it to the versions I've recently had at Sap's and Madam Mam's. The version at Thai Taste was good -- but not as intensely flavored as the ones at Sap's and Madam Mam's. Thai Taste does not use as much lemon grass, and I would guess they use less galangal as well. The result was not bad, but definitely milder than the ones that I'd compare it to. I intend to go back and explore some of the other items on the menu. Service was fine, given that my order amounted to a very straightforward requirement. If you like a beer with your meal, remember to bring your own, as they offer only coffee, tea, and soft drinks. read more

We love Thai taste. We live in southwest Austin, and this is our go-to. Sweet people. Authentic, delicious Thai food. I wish they were open on Sundays! It's simple. It's reasonably priced.....and it's perfect take-out. We like everything we've tried. The green curry chicken is my personal favorite. My kids like the Pad Thai. Their crab rangoon and egg rolls are great. If you like spicy, they also have Thai peppers in fish sauce.....I can't remember the name of the sauce that mix makes, but I love it. Ok. Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice... I went back because I had the flu and really wanted some lemongrass soup. Since it is on the way home from the Dr., I went to Thai Taste, and ordered to go. Long story short So cheap-they gave me literally one small scoop of steamed rice. No lemon grass. Really, I couldn't find one piece. The worst part- it was the saltiest dish I have ever been served. I couldn't eat it. Though it did make a good gargle for my sore throat. Never again! read more

The Good - Location, location, location. Set in a shabby little strip mall fairly close to my abode, Thai Taste is located in an area in dire need of solid dinner options. The eatery also sports a well-lit and clean interior. - Portions were sizable, and the the price was right. - Service was prompt and friendly. - Tried the Lard Na with Tofu and Tom Kha. Tom Kha was a little spicy for my taste buds, but yummy nevertheless. Lard Na was also savory, and I was given an ample portion of roasted soybean gravy to go with my flat rice noodles. The Bad - Tom Kha practically left me crying. I'm sensitive to heat (not flavor) due to a stint on the now-banned medication Accutane, so next time I'll remember to ask for a more mild dish. - Lard Na could have been more flavorful, and the tofu at Thai Taste wasn't the soft, fluffy, well-fried variety that goes into the Lard Na at Madam Mam's. Next time I'lll try the Lard Na with Beef. I'm picky 'bout my tofu. The Verdict - Look. Thai Taste is a local business located in a "cursed" location. It's a great alternative to the sh!tty burgers/buffets/fast food in the immediate area. I'll definitely be back to try some other dishes - I have a feeling that I simply didn't order the "right" dishes. With a bit more exploration I'm sure I'll find some favorites. So, I've been on an asian food binge the past few months and have reasons to now update my previous thoughts. I still think they have awesome Tiger Cry. But, as my dietary needs have changed, I don't eat that anymore, hence my needed update. The soft spring rolls (not fried ones), are bland. Just plain bland. There's nothing in them to give flavor, no herbs, nothing. Just tastes like vermicelli, which is nothing. Used to like these, not so much now. Fried egg rolls. Hmmm, they don't seem to taste as good as I remember. The Mixed Vegetable Salad is pretty darn good though. So while I've lost some favorites due to an awakening in my palate, I found this yummy dish and will be having some more when I return. Easy, could make at home, but not until i had their's for inspiration. :) The Thai Tea is always good. I mean I think they'd have to really try to make this drink bad tasting. It's just soooo yummy. Mmmmm, condensed milk, yumm. The ladies working here are still pretty nice, but our interactions are minimal. We just do pick up, so haven't the opportunity to sit down for a full customer service experience. read more

I love Thai food, and this place was just ok. Nothing bad, but nothing to write home about. The overall ambiance was lacking. When we came in, it was practically empty, they had something strange going on with the lighting and table setup that made it feel like a cafeteria rather than a restaurant. Also, it kind-of smelled like industrial cleaners. The service was ok. They were attentive, but had no sense of timing, and came up several times to ask us if we were ready when we were clearly busy talking and all still had our menus open. The food itself was ok. I liked the tofu spring roll. That was the highlight. My main course was tofu and snow peas, and it was not at all spicy (to my taste) and the sauce may have been a tad too sweet. I was also disappointed at the very small volume of vegetables. There was, however, tons of tofu. The ratios just seemed off. My S.O. also agreed that his food was only ok. Not up to central Austin standards. Overall, they get an ok. But I probably won't be back. There are much better Thai places in town. read more

I have eaten at Thai Taste twice in the past 2-3 weeks. I still think this the best Thai food in Austin. Some of the bad comments about this restaurant really floors me. I read a review from a few days back stating the Pad Thai is bad. I had the Pad Thai today and it was outstanding. I wish people would be more descriptive of what they found bad about the food. I had Pad Thai and the Tom Kah Kai Soup. I am absolutely amazed at the flavors Thai cooking can get out of something with so few ingredients. Its the perfect balance of salty, savory, sour, spicy and fresh. I love Thai soups and this hits the mark consistently. The Pad Thai had the perfect blend of peanut, salt, sour, sweet, savory and the perfect slightly chewy and gummy noodles. I added a little dried Thai pepper to both the soup and Pad Thai. About 3 weeks ago when i was there I had the Fire Bowl of Tom Yum soup....That is probably my favorite cold day soup. I always ask for it extra spicy and still add more dried Thai pepper. I usually get the dumplings too which I really enjoy. The service over the past 3-4 years has really improved. In the beginning service was pretty slow and unattentive. That is no longer an issue. The decor is the same and is perfectly fine by me. If you have not tried this place lately or ever you should. read more

I had an order of the shrimp fresh rolls and a chicken pad thai. The fresh rolls were decent, though I think they could be more generous with the shrimp (there is only one shrimp per roll). The pad thai was average for Austin: tasted fine, but completely inauthentic. It's far too sweet with too much sugar in the sauce. A proper pad thai is not supposed to be sticky like that. Lived in Austin majority of my adulthood and have never found such authentic thai food till I've across this gem. They recently went undergo new Management and most would pull away but this is by the best change this restaurant has received. The food is very well presented and the atmosphere is a very home like feel. The staff are bilingual in thai and English so be sure to stop by and say "sa wat de ka" which means hello. Highly recommend trying the papaya salad with chicken wings and sticky rice, my top favorite dish I grew eating while living thailand and it taste just like how my mom made it!!! read more

Everything that I've tried at the restaurant has been very good- from the appetizers to the traditional "american-style" thai dishes like Pad Thai to the more traditional Thai curries. The service is good but the restaurant interior is very bare-bones with not-particularly-comfortable seating. It's in a strip mall at the Y. It tends to be a little warm on the inside during the day. I did not have the greatest experience here. The service was really slow. I never got a water refill, but that did not matter so much, because the dish was not spicy as I had requested. On to the food. It was ok. I got the "special set" which consisted of two grilled chicken drum sticks, a small portion of Papaya Salad, and some sticky rice. All for $11.95!!! And I don't really care for drum sticks. They are also dirt cheap, and I resent spending so much on two. I tried the Tom Yum and it was okay, but nothing special. And not spicy. To round it all off, 10 minutes after leaving I was frantically searching for a toilet while on MoPac. No fun, and bordering on TMI. read more

We have been looking for a great Thai restaurant since we moved to Austin 6 years ago. Finally. Our search had ended here at Thai Taste. I had the Pad Kee Mao with Tofu and it was spicy as promised and delicious with well made noodles and heaping portions of veggies. Good portion for the price as well, so I'll be coming back. I had take out so I can't comment on the service, but the check out lady was quick and pleasant. The decor is simple and it's BYOB but my focus is simply on the food and its quality. Really good Pad Thai! I got it "medium spicy" and it was pretty hot! Thanks to Thai iced tea for cooling down the heat. Also, their lemongrass and coconut soups are really good...I'm not sure which one I like better! Their lunch special is only $6-7 for an entree, soup or salad, and an egg roll. Great deal! I've been going here for years and I always leave happy. The dumplings and rangoons are done just right, and their curries are always on point. I tried the Tom Yum noodle soup recently and was amazed at the flavors. A little bit of this and that from their spice rack and it brought out even more flavor. Also the Pad Thai and Pad Prik King is really hard to beat. Super friendly people working there and always a place to park, which is naturally a plus. This restaurant is close to home and it is typically on our rotation for take out. We haven't been there in a while, so I suggested it to the husband recently. We got the steamed dumplings, Penang chicken level 2 spicy, and Tiger Cried. Everything tasted good but that was short lived.
