This little restaurant was a fun find. Apparently decor is not a must for these folks, but the food was quite good, and generous servings for the price. We had soups that were quite pleasing. Lea had the coconut soup while I enjoyed the lemongrass. We shared, and agreed that they were both quite good. As mentioned by another reviewer, they get extra points for the Enoki mushrooms in the soup.The spring rolls with shrimp were very tasty, served with a vinaigrette style dipping sauce. Each lunch entree is accompanied with your choice of soup or salad plus, an eggroll. Service was a bit lacking, with only one server on the floor. We got, and refilled, our tea, as out server was in the back more than on the dining area floor, but the food was good enough to bring us back again. read more

This is by far the best Thai I've had in Austin and in the top two or three Thai experiences I've had ever. I got chicken pad Thai, pineapple fried rice with shrimp, the potato wontons, and fried tofu appetizer. The flavor on everything was amazing (I find some Thai lacks flavor in Austin). Ambience/Decor - Let's get straight to it... forget it. Concrete floors, bare tables, nothing on walls except a few TV's. Not great. It's funny, it would probably be cooler if it were grungier and more of a hole in the wall. Service - The lady who helped me was very nice and my to-go order (I ordered in person) was brought out quickly Food - I have to admit, Nam Sod is my go-to. It's the first thing I order when I go to a new Thai place and this visit was no exception. It was good. I've had incredible Nam Sod and I have had some OK Nam Sod. This was solid, although I would have preferred cabbage to lettuce and more of it - my last few bites were pork only. Still good though. Sorry to be the lone dissenting voice here, but I found this cafe to be generally underwhelming. Their decor is minimal, which lends to a cafe style, rather than a dining style experience. In and of itself, of course, that's not a make or break, but I don't have a lot to rave about in the food department either. We went with our standard barometers for gauging a Thai restaurant: the litmus tests all must pass in order receive repeat business and recommendations. Tom Ka Kai -- Salty, thin. Nice choice of mushrooms rather than the standard buttons. Pineapple Fried Rice - fair but forgettable Panang Curry - The panang curry lacked two items that we typically expect - creaminess, and accent vegetables. While the latter isn't a deal breaker (a couple token green beans, slices of carrot, or peas), the curry itself was little more than your average red curry. Chicken SaTay - The meat wasn't thinly sliced - more chunks - but it was a little heavy on the yellow curry. The peanut sauce was of a less creamy consistency than we prefer, which made it seem less bold from a flavor perspective. Egg Rolls - Bland. Commercial rather than home-made Overall, Yelpers, this is forgettable food, but I can't say that I'd snub them if I lived in the neighborhood. Thai Taste is my favorite Thai place in Austin. I'm lucky to live nearby so it's become a regular spot for take out and occasional dine in. The spices are authentic and they're good about honoring your heat preference. The staff are friendly and they've been investing in the dining area. My tum yum soup had no lemongrass in it so I had to ask for lime. The beef pad see ew was terrible the meat was very hard and super chewy. The tiger cried was not good meat was hard and chewy rubbery. Very disappointed will not be coming back to waste my money or time on this place. read more

We ordered several times from Thai Taste before. We were happy that a new place was close by for a quick Thai fix. To celebrate a family member's birthday, whose fav food is Thai, we placed a big order, including dishes we ordered before. Sadly, the food was horrible this time. Having had Pad Thai from Thai Taste before, this was the worst Pad Thai I have ever eaten period. It was mushy and boring. The noodles were overcooked and stuck together and lacking in flavor. What a nice surprise! I lived in Thailand for years so I am always looking for Thai restaurants who aim to make their dishes taste more like the real thing. This place does one of the better jobs at that in Austin. (if you haven't been to Thailand, you'd be surprised how different the American version can be at some places) And this place is under some new ownership so that could explain why they do such a good job. They really do get close to real taste, with friendly service too. Its a cute simple place, so if you're looking for a cutting-edge hipster 'room' experience this may not be for you. My husband and I went here for dinner in mid-September, and were appalled. The place was full of customers (looked like a birthday party) without masks. Like 10+ people in close contact (not "Limited capacity"). The employee who rang us up at the register was not wearing a mask when we entered, but quickly pulled one over her mouth when we approached the register. The other employee was not wearing a mask, but was wearing a plastic face shield, which does not prevent aerosol spread. I had to hand them my credit card (not the advertised "Contactless payments"). No "Temperature checks". This place is, at best, negligently contributing to the spread of Covid. That said - the food is amazing, but we will not be back until 2021. read more

We were introduced to Thai food back in the 80's outside of Washington, DC. Now living in Austin, we have found the best Thai food right here. With the new management and menu, it is excellent. My first thought was the same, "It's in a strip mall...across the parking lot from McDonalds" This restaurant is truly a hidden gem. How did something that started so good turn so bad? We started coming to this place for work lunches shortly after they opened. The food was initially fantastic - fresh ingredients, cooked well, spicy, not sweet. They even used real magrood (kaffir lime) leaves in the curry. Something happened though, and the food took a turn for the worst. Pad Thai became a sugary overcooked pile of mushy clumpy noodles. The curries seemed to all gain a cup of sugar each. It got to the point where there was not a dish I could eat there without feeling halfway to getting sick - the same kind of feeling I get from eating too much dessert. Last time we were there, I heard a woman at another table complaining about the dish being overly sweet. Is this what happens to the food when a Thai restaurant sits in Texas long enough? Not all of us want sugary bbq-like sauce in our meals, believe it or not. Hopefully they'll go back to their original (and I imagine more authentic) recipes. read more

Went here the other night when it was fuh-REEZING in Austin and it was delicious! Boyfriend and I got the tom yum soup with shrimp and the chicken pad thai to share. The soup came in an awesome little firepot and was just perfect. Lemongrass always clears my sinuses and makes me feel better when it's cold outside. The pad thai was exactly how I like pad thai, a little more on the sweet side with ample crushed peanuts. :D Both dishes were around $10, so VERY reasonable for dinner prices. I'm actually sitting in the restaurant while I type this. Upon walking in, they have a chalk board with the specials which is nice because when a waiter explains them in person, I can't remember the last few they mentioned. The decor is lacking but I think this place is new. They will probably build it up later I'm sure. We walked through and the waitress asked us to pick any table. It took her a few minutes to get to us but she was the only waitress and I was in no hurry. They're playing easy listening new music which is relaxing and there's a muted tv playing a football game. You can watch the traffic along 71. I can imagine this place being nice when it's raining, sipping some tea in the evening or at night and just sitting back. I ordered their spring rolls and hot green tea and my husband ordered a coconut Thai soup. Our three meals we shared were Thai fried rice, Indian fried rice and crispy duck which came on a bed of vegetables with a side of cabbage and hot sweet and sour sauce if some sort. What I liked about the dipping sauce they give with the spring rolls is that it's thicker than a Vietnamese fish sauce and sits on the roll instead of just dripping off. The flavor was good. The Indian fried rice was pretty spot on with slice jalapeño. They left a few pieces with the membrane for added spice if you wanted it and some pieces were just flesh. I'd definitely come back to try another dish. The waitress works hard to get everything out on time, she cleans as she goes and our plates were hot. read more

Thai Taste used to be my favorite place in Oak Hill, THEN my birthday of 2013 happened and I will NEVER go back. The main lady in that place is SO rude. I ordered something new for once and I just didn't like it. I told her I didn't like it and that I wanted something else. She brought me my regular dish and then they kept asking if I wanted a box for the other dish.. and I said over and over again to various people I didn't want it and they can take it off the table. They literally left that dish in front of me the whole time... Finally when it was check time, it was on my bill. So then I had a argument with that main lady to say I wasn't paying for something I didn't like or wouldn't eat. She then Told me that I shouldn't ever order something that I don't like and know only what I do like. THEN told me that if I don't pay for it, that it comes out of her money. She the freaking owner of the business, you should have a shrink budget for that. It just got worse and worse.. to where after 2 years of constantly going there, many times a month.. she killed it with horrible service. Honestly the food good, but the service is terrible and they make you feel like sh*t. I noticed more people do carry out then actual sit down. Might be because of that main lady. We have dined here several times since they opened and have never been disappointed in the quality of the food. The Tom Kah soup is delicious and has just the right amount of spice. If Thai taste was somewhere else I think I would give it 5 stars because its location is the main thing that keeps me from eating there more often. I live in South west Austin but for some reason even though its physically close the drive always takes me 20 or more minutes given the traffic in the area. But lets forget all the nonsense about location and get the the important aspect...the food. Thai taste does a great job of bringing Thai food to the people of Austin. I've tried almost every Thai place in town and this is definitely near the top of my list. Their Pad Thai is excellent and made the way it should be. Their Tiger Cry is also top notch as are their spring rolls and everything else I've tried. I also am a big fan of Thai tea and always get myself some when I go. The food is great in the restaurant as well as for take out and I can't say enough good things about the people who work there. I'm knocking Thai Taste down a star simply because they raised their menu prices. It's now $7.95 for their lunch special, which makes for a total bill in the $12 range if you get an ice tea, tax, and tip. Their portions are extremely small, and for $12 I'm very disappointed because I love the food. The service also continues to be sub-par. Pretty much every single time I go here, you are seated quick and your orders are promptly taken, but good luck getting anyone to refill your glass or bring condiments once your food arrives. read more

I ordered the Tom Kha soup, and I wanted to compare it to the versions I've recently had at Sap's and Madam Mam's. The version at Thai Taste was good -- but not as intensely flavored as the ones at Sap's and Madam Mam's. Thai Taste does not use as much lemon grass, and I would guess they use less galangal as well. The result was not bad, but definitely milder than the ones that I'd compare it to. I intend to go back and explore some of the other items on the menu. Service was fine, given that my order amounted to a very straightforward requirement. If you like a beer with your meal, remember to bring your own, as they offer only coffee, tea, and soft drinks. read more

Oak Hill has really developed over the years. At one point there was just an old western looking saloon strip mall here; Now there is a Thai restaurant. I visited for lunch and here's the run down: The Tom yum was middling; not offensive but really muted in flavor. Chiefly salty. Little sour. Kinda dull. Kra prao was tasty. Good. But the rice was not fresh: too many hard pieces which really irritated my molars. Or was it chicken gristle? What is breaking my teeth in this dish?? I know I'm going through a strange patch of oral sensitivity, but this is ridiculous. In a Thai restaurant??? Anyway, I'm not that impressed. The question is: should I be happy that there now seems to be a convenient Thai restaurant in every neighborhood in Austin? I'll leave you with that question to ponder. read more

We love Thai taste. We live in southwest Austin, and this is our go-to. Sweet people. Authentic, delicious Thai food. I wish they were open on Sundays! It's simple. It's reasonably priced.....and it's perfect take-out. We like everything we've tried. The green curry chicken is my personal favorite. My kids like the Pad Thai. Their crab rangoon and egg rolls are great. If you like spicy, they also have Thai peppers in fish sauce.....I can't remember the name of the sauce that mix makes, but I love it. Ok. Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice... I went back because I had the flu and really wanted some lemongrass soup. Since it is on the way home from the Dr., I went to Thai Taste, and ordered to go. Long story short So cheap-they gave me literally one small scoop of steamed rice. No lemon grass. Really, I couldn't find one piece. The worst part- it was the saltiest dish I have ever been served. I couldn't eat it. Though it did make a good gargle for my sore throat. Never again! read more
