Thai72 just opened recently and the neighborhood was really lacking a great Thai place after Limeleaf, Amcook and any others nearby closed. My mother and I were looking forward to trying it after the great reviews we read. I do believe I'd give them a better review if we came a second time but this time, the experience was severely lacking. As soon as we walked in, there was no one to seat us at the host stand. We waited until a host arrived, who immediately told us that the kitchen was closing. It was 3:35pm and we were terribly confused. Apparently, the staff is given an hour break from 4-5pm so anyone coming in will be turned away in that time range. I agree that the staff deserves to eat and deserves a break but for the entire establishment to stop running for an hour seems like a faulty business practice. We were given what felt like an ultimatum - order quickly or leave. Perhaps if there'd been any sign of such practice, we wouldn't have come at the hour we did and would've arrived after the break. Admittedly, that "ultimatum" set the tone of this review and our experience. When our waitress arrived, she not only rushed us to order but barely let us finish before she ran off. She was very concerned to get our orders in before the kitchen closed but it made me incredibly anxious. It made us both feel uncomfortable and that our patronage wasn't wanted. As if we interrupted their practice or that we should've known better. What was strange is that, even though we had a time limit, our food was all served after the kitchen "shut down." Considering how we were rushed, the food took more time than you might expect to be prepared or served. We ordered the Thai Crepe Dumplings, which came first. It was absolutely delicious but the filling didn't stay in the rice noodle skin at all. Is it a crepe because it is folded? I didn't think it was a crepe... Then, at least, 10 minutes later, I was served my Tom Kha soup. I love Tom Kha soup and theirs was heartier than I expected. it was absolutely delicious except it needed a vinegar or lime juice for acidity. And there were big pieces of galangal and lemongrass in it. Another 10 minutes or so later, we were given both our Chicken Lettuce Wrap and the Kra-Praw Kai Sub we ordered. The Chicken Lettuce Wraps were more like Lettuce Cups, but they were fine. The Kra-Praw Kai Sub had a good bit of heat to it. The fried egg and the rice calmed the heat but we could definitely taste it. I'd never tried that dish before but I'd definitely order it again. The sign outside said you got a free cocktail for checking in on Yelp, which I did. It took asking two different people to get it but I received my Lychee Martini. There was definitely some unexpected heat to it as if there were chilis in the Martini itself as well as the glass being rimmed with Togarashi. I didn't expect it and I didn't enjoy the heat added to the drink. Over all, the food was great and I imagine the service might've been fine if we came at a better time but they need to make it known that they take this hour break. It seemed like was still delivery orders going out so I don't understand. We'll try again. read more

My son is a picky eater, but he loves the pad thai, chive pancakes, and Thai iced tea here. The lunch specials are generous and worth the 3 courses. Reasonably priced for the UWS. Their house soup that comes with the lunch specials is lovely. Glad they are in the neighborhood! :) read more

Meeting friends in the afternoon, went shopping and ended up hungry for not having breakfast. Walked into this Thai restaurant alone and tried their lunch special. The set came with your choice of appetizers, soup or salad, and an entrée. I picked the chicken and shrimp dumplings, they look more like Siu mei. Tasted good, if the fillings can be slightly more moist, it will be perfect. Salad is simple bit refreshing, the citrus dressing is mildly sweetened, so delicious to be eaten with the lettuce. I ordered drunken noodle as my main, spicy, a little too salty, you may want to drink beer or Thai coffee to wash it down. A good value for lunch in Upper West of Manhattan. read more

I went to Thai72 since it's pretty close to the AMC movie theater and it had great reviews on Yelp. The decor of the restaurant (including the water wheel) created a modern and relaxing atmosphere. Great spot for a date. The wait staff were really attentive. As soon as we had our jackets off, the waiter was ready to take our drink order. He made several recommendations including the appetizer platter and the duck tamarind. We opted for other selections. I tend to share plates so we ordered two dishes (Chicken Pad Thai and Red Curry). The Chicken Pad Thai very good with a nice size portion. Chicken was slightly dry but the rest of the dish was flavorful. The Red Curry comes with Jasmine rice and has a little kick. The Red Curry consisted of coconut, milk, string beans, bell peppers, bamboo shoots, and basil and was really good. read more

He was also very patient when explaining what each dish had bc i was also ordering for a vegetarian. Great addition to the neighborhood! Thai 72 has an awesome ambiance, good drinks, and excellent food. We tried it for the first time on a Thursday night and went right back the following night with an out-of-town guest who loved it as well. The summer rolls are the best I have ever had. Also amazing is the duck crepe and ba mee poo. The menu is incredibly visual and well laid-out, which makes it easy to order - especially for those who might not be familiar with Thai food. The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is because I think Thai 72 could go a little bolder with flavor - in terms of intensity, it isn't as authentic as other places we have tried. Overall, though, the food is amazing, the staff is wonderful and it's a really nice place to have dinner alone, with another person or a group. read more

Prefer ordering from sala Thai just a few blocks away, which has a better balance of savory, sweet, and sour flavors in each entree. We have explored a large number of Thai places in New York. This is our favorite. They have the best pad Thai, it is now the yardstick to which we measure other pad Thais. Note that we can't speak to authenticity, we have no experience of going to Thailand or having Thai people in our families or anything like that, just two people who love to eat. But maybe they are so good because rumor has it the chef used to cook for the king of Thailand. Once in a while we go sit down in the restaurant with friends, but often we just order in. This is our 1st time to THAI 72 located on West 72nd street on the upper West side of Manhattan. It occupies the same space as the previous Lime Leaf Thai restaurant. It is a complete overhaul of the previous space with a brand new, tastefully designed upscale, modern décor and a completely new menu that is quite extensive. This new design is quite an improvement over the previous owner. It is much more inviting and appears to have more space for seating more customers. The bar area is very inviting for sitting and having a drink. In the back dining area, there is a big water wheel fountain. Great ambience, better lighting. Romantic. read more

I have eaten here countless of times and I have enjoyed it each and every time! Thai is one of my most adored cuisine options and the food here has definitely exceeded my expectations in flavor and substance (although it isn't always consistent due to the changing chefs which could be a good thing but personally I prefer consistency) I have had the entrees:chicken Rama and pad Thai. I have tried the appetizers: sautéed chicken and rolls with plum sauce. All four options have been delightful and I really do suggest getting the rolls with the plum sauce. The ambiance of the area is tranquil and serene it looks and feels like a high end manhattan restaurant with the water wheel being my personal favorite spot to be seated by(perfect for two). The staff is very attentive, my water glass was never empty and I was checked in on by staff an ample amount of times which I personally prefer especially since the staff actually seemed like they wanted to assure that I was having the best experience while there. During my birthday dinner there the servers had brought out a dessert with a candle on it and sang the birthday song and one of the other customers(who remained anonymous) had paid for my whole meal which I am still left feeling grateful for. Pretty good Thai food especially considering the prices. I've had the Pad Thai (pictured) and Pad Kra Paw--the pad Thai is definitely a bit better. The ambience of the restaurant is actually super awesome, and even though the delivery is fast and free, I'd recommend eating at the restaurant for a better experience. Yes, the management embarrasses you, enrages you, and just plain hurts your feelings by showing contempt for you. We've seen the desperation. Beware. If they want your table, they might start clearing before you've finish the Pad Thai, take the fork right out of your hand. You might have to karate chop a managers wrist to keep her from grabbing your wineglass before you drink that last sip of Pinot. And forget desert. As we know first hand, the nice server will bring you the desert menu, but the manager will grab it out of your child's hand and yell "No desert!!" Doesn't matter if you've spent $$$$ so far. We came here for dinner during the week and it was fantastic. We are both healthy eaters (I am plant-based) and it's hard to find a lot of fresh dishes that aren't overly fried or covered in sauce. I LOVED the Thai72 vegan menu, lots of options to choose from. We ended up getting the mango avocado salad, the healthy soup (perfect if you're under the weather!), the vegetable dumplings and the Pad Se Ew with vegetables. The place has a nice design and atmosphere but the food was below average. Duck Bun "special" was bad- dry and overpriced ($11 for 2 pieces). Coconut Milk Soup tasted watered down. Noodles were ok but the beef in the dish was chewy and overcoocked. Beyond the food, it was sad to see how every single customer getting up from their table (including me) bangs their head on the low lamps hanging above the tables. Had a great dinner here while recently visiting my old UWS neighborhood. Before I get into the food, you could easily miss Thai72 in the string of storefronts on busy 72nd street, but it would be a shame to miss it as they have designed a charming, little oasis on the UWS. Brick walls, great lighting and water wheel all add to the feel. Kudos on the design. Both cocktails I got were great - the Secret Garden cocktail was my favorite. Since there were 5 of us, we ordered an assortment of appetizers and dishes to share. Standouts were crab rangoon (the real King Crab made these so much better than the sweet fake crab ones you get from other Asian takeout). Crispy spring rolls, curry puffs and dumplings were all terrific too. The Pad Thai (with shrimp), Tamarind Duck and Braised Pork Red Curry dishes were my personal favorites. My friends enjoyed the soup with seafood in it (although commented slightly fishy). True testament of the quality is that a friend in our party is Thai and she was a fan of their authentic food! Desserts were good too, but could have done without the diner style presentation (topped with whipped cream and cherries). Hats off to Chef Tee who has quite the pedigree of cooking for the Thai royals. Will definitely be back for more. read more

We went to try this place out yesterday, honestly this was total waste of money. This is NYC everyone, you don't need to settle with the mediocre food. Here is what happened: 1- Hosts: 2 hosts should learn to say "welcome" and smile. They don't even look into your face, doesn't welcome you, just shows you your table by pointing out, that's it. We thought to leave the place even without ordering but decided to give a try anyways, we were tired. 2- Food: Extremely overcooked, over seasoned, over sauced piece of mushy food. Doesn't taste fresh. Don't wait to see vibrant colored and fresh Thai food with layers of flavors. Inedible-mushy pastas. We sent back total 3 dishes: Drunken Noodle: There was "anise" in it even though it was not listed at the ingredients. Pasta was extremely mushy. Sent this back- this was inedible. When they were saying drunken, I wasn't expecting "literally". Replacement dish came wrong as a chicken dish, had to sent back. Third try: It was Pad Thai. Same, extremely overcooked and mushy. Extreme amounts of vinegar. A few small pieces of beef, I guess they forgot to add this literally. I couldn't even see any type of vegetable in it. This was only a bunch of overcooked noodles. Extreme amounts of egg. This egg was incredibly overpowering so you could only taste eggs, that's it. No flavor than eggs in the dish, you cannot taste anything else. This was horrible. We asked the waiter why this was overcooked and extreme amounts of vinegar and egg in it, he said this is what Pad Thai supposed to be and left the table very rudely. Sorry, I understand you guys are a Thai restaurant and this is your cuisine but that doesn't grant you to the title who is serving the best and most authentic dishes of the cuisine automatically, you have to earn it. And I am not saying that I am an expert but like every other New Yorker, we have been exposed to amazing food options from every part of the world for years now so all of us has some type of idea and experience about cuisines already. Let alone I was a restauranteur in Manhattan previously. Only good item was: Vegetable dumplings. This was good and only star goes to that in my 1 star review. Other dish we tried was Spicy Thai Eggplant. Same, it was overcooked and no flavors, like at all. You can hardly recognize the eggplant in it, let alone tasting it. 3: Drinks: $14-$15 for 1 cc alcohol and a warm drink. It was called something like Secret Garden with Hendricks in it. I don't believe that this was Hendricks and I am sure that the amount of it was around 1 cc. Do not waste your money on the cocktails here, total rip off. When we were leaving the place, waiter came outside to apologize about his behavior. I explained to him that his behavior was cherry on the top because the biggest problem was the food itself. We had dinner with friends here before a comedy show at the Beacon nearby and we were pleasantly surprised by this place! We're no strangers to Thai food and after a while, there are plenty of dishes that you come to expect (pad Thai, Tom yum goong, pad kraprow, etc) and this place had all of those, of course, but it also had a hugely diverse menu of appetizers that were amazing! We had the usual spring rolls and chicken satay, but also these dumplings that looked like a play on Thai shumai and some delicious duck crepes! The signature entree portions are very generous (we had the Bangkok Duck and Pork Chops in red curry and mango chutney) and a nice selection of wine, beer and some interesting cocktails. The decor is very wooded and unassuming with a cool laid back vibe that made for a great evening. Definitely coming back here! read more
