I am searching for a jeep for a "mid-life crisis" purchase. Just a 2nd "play car". I was searching on Cl and fell in love with a 2007 white/back Jeep Rubicon 2 door with a lift and 35" tires! I was a little reluctant though because it was at an used car dealership (That Car Place on Wyoming). A friend of mine, however, had bought a couple of Jeeps from them (15 years ago) and had a great experience. She raved about their "Lifetime Warranty" that they boast on their website and so I felt very confident about buying from them. My personal experience was awful though. First of all, they wanted $3K above KBB retail and would not budge. They claimed "the economy" and "covid" as reasons they had to price so high. I think this is BS. I don't know for sure, but I would bet they use the same reasons to low ball someone bringing in a trade in. Anyway, this was not the biggest problem I had with them. I test drove the Jeep in the neighborhood and loved it. It had a "sway bar" warning light on in the dash. The salesman explained that this was a minor issue that would be fixed easily in the shop as part of their readying the vehicle for sale to me. I decided to buy it and I had to purchase (for $500) the Lifetime Warranty because their warranty only comes for free with vehicles that are below 100,000 miles (this Jeep had 146,000 miles). In order to qualify for the warranty, the vehicle had to pass a 64 point inspection, and so I was even more confident that I was getting a sound vehicle. While signing the sale paperwork, I noticed that my warranty language said "10 year warranty" and not the "Lifetime Warranty" toted on their website and which I had paid $500 for. I questioned this with my salesman. He brought up the website on his computer and looked at what they advertise and he agreed that this was a contradiction to what they advertise and took it to his Manager (a woman in the next office). I said that they could just strike through the 10 year language, write lifetime, and initial it. The Manager flatly refused. I spoke to her myself and she said "well just don't buy the vehicle". I asked her if she knew that she was knowingly violating truth in advertising laws and she didn't care. The salesman took it to the Owner, above the seemingly unethical Manager with limited people skills, and he agreed to honor the warranty stated on the website. The salesman took the paperwork out for the Owner to sign and that is when the Owner changed his mind because he had called the company that underwrites the warranty and they said that my car did not qualify since it was over the 100,000 miles. This is a contradiction because I purchased the warranty for $500. No where did it say that the purcahsed warranty was any different than the warranty that comes for free for vehicles 100,000 miles or less. In spite of this, I still purchased the vehicle, but told the salesman I would be writing a review about this. It got worse however. We went out to the car after I signed the papers and gave him the cashiers check. He then said "oh! I forgot to tell you about the sway bar"! "They couldn't make the electronic control switch work so they disabled it and put a manual knob under the front of the car to manually engage/disengage the sway bar". He said that it is not needed unless I am planning to do heavy duty rock crawling (which I wasn't). I said I think I could live with it, but I was uneasy that he broke this to me at the ninth hour! He also would not give me the 64 point check list for the car showing that they went through everything! Upon driving the vehicle home, I jumped on I-40 and started accelerating. The vehicle was extremely unstable at speeds over 45 mph. It wasn't a vibration but a severe instability in the steering. The Jeep would move right and I would correct it to the left at which point it would go too far left and I would correct to the right! I would sway at high speeds left and right for many of these iterations until I could regain control. If I had to avoid debris in the road at the last minute I would have easily lost control of the vehicle. I pulled over and called the salesman. I told him what was happening and he admitted that no one drove the car after the sway bar installation! Part of the 64 point inspection was supposed to be a test drive. He said to "sleep on it" and if I was not happy in the morning to bring it back. I took the Jeep back the next day and was very worried that they may not fix it or take it back, because all the paperwork I signed said that I am buying it "as is". To their credit, they gave me my cashiers check back (as well as credit back the $500 credit card deposit) and I was able to completely get out of this deal. The only reason I didn't give this review a 1 star is because they took the car back without hesitation. I think this place used to be great but it is either under new ownership or management. read more

My wife and I were searching for a Range Rover Sport and one came up at That Car Place. She inquired and got an immediate response from Jason, the owner. When we showed up to see the car, it was already out, shined and cleaned and he tossed us the keys and said to try it out. 2 days later, we bought the car as it was a very fair price and in amazing condition. Caveat Emptor. We've all heard the phrase. It means "Buyer Beware." This especially holds true when buying a used vehicle from ANY car dealer. I'm going to admit that it's pretty much my fault that I wound up with a vehicle that I've since learned is going to need a couple of grand invested in it to get it into better running condition. That said, if you are considering buying any vehicle from That Car Place, especially if it has no warranty and is being sold "as is," TAKE IT TO ANOTHER MECHANIC AND HAVE IT INSPECTED STEM to STERN. In September I visited That Car Place to look at their selection of used Jeeps and I went to look at one Jeep in particular: a 1995 Jeep Wrangler with a 4 cylinder engine. It was in my price range for my first Jeep. I ignored all the warning flags that came my way while considering this Jeep. When I first started it up, I was startled by how loud and rumbly it was. When I asked Ladd Johnson why it was so loud, I was told it was the kind of exhaust system it had. Okay. I ignored warning sign #1. Warning sign #2: the length of time the Jeep had been on the lot. Forty five days. When I asked why it was still on the lot, I was told that people didn't have an interest in a 4 cylinder Jeep. I should have known I was buying a bad car. Additional warning signs: I was steered towards a much newer Jeep, which was sweet, but out of my price range. As I kept coming back to the '95, I was told that after purchase, I could bring the Jeep back to get a "good deal" on new tires, a new lift kit, and upholstery. After buying the Jeep, I subsequently learned the tires on it were 12 years old, and that I have a bent front leaf spring. I missed noticing the bent leaf spring when I crawled underneath the Jeep to check it for any undercarriage damage. As the daughter of an automotive mechanic, I consider myself to be fairly car savvy, however, my unfamiliarity with Jeeps and my eagerness to obtain one before winter (I live in the East Mountains) muted the voice in my ear (probably my Dad's) telling me to keep looking. Again, and I stress, whether it's from these guys, or any other used car dealer, take the car you are considering buying to another mechanic for an inspection. Two months after buying the Jeep and noticing a continued loss of power (yes, I know it's a 4 banger and they are famous for having low power) and horrible gas mileage, I finally took it to a local mechanic, and was told that the Jeep had an exhaust leak and needed a new catalytic converter. So I called Mr. Johnson at That Car Place and asked if he was aware the cat was fubar. He said "No ma'am, we would have replaced it if we had known." Uh huh. After taking it to a local muffler shop, it was revealed that the cat was completely void of honeycomb brick. So yes, the Jeep was loud and rumbly from the get go because of the type of "exhaust system" it had. More than likely this Jeep has an additional exhaust leak somewhere. More than likely a cracked exhaust manifold. Apparently, after much research, I've learned it's a pretty common thing with the 2.5 liter Jeep engines. TO THEIR CREDIT, I will say that Ladd Johnson and Jason Fetters did replace the radiator on the Jeep (the previous one had bent fins) and also ordered some sun visors at no charge (unfortunately, the kid who installed them put them on the wrong way). They also knocked $800 off the price of the Jeep (another indicator that maybe there were issues that I ignored) and I'm grateful for that. I'm also financing the Jeep. As new resident of the state, and just a few months at my present job, I didn't qualify for That Car Place' 2.5% financing. Without my permission or being given the heads up before proceeding, Mr. Johnson set me up through Wells Fargo at an 8.9% APR. I looked at the Jeep on a Saturday, gave him a small down payment, and by Sunday I had changed my mind. When we spoke on Monday, I learned that the whole transaction had already been processed, and so, despite my misgivings, I moved ahead with the purchase of the Jeep. I should have just said no. I didn't have to proceed with the purchase of the Jeep, but I did, so I am totally responsible. So, that's my experience with That Car Place. I went there based on their good reviews and lack of negative reports. I asked Ladd if I was buying a good car and he assured me that I was. I got charmed by Mr. Johnson and Mr. Fetters and I was never given a high pressure sales pitch at any time. I know they do a deal of business and seem to have many happy customers. But even the nicest of guys, doing a land office business, will occasionally sell a crappy car and Bible verses on the marquee do not guarantee honesty. It's a used car dealership after all. The moral of the story is: just take any thing you are considering buying from That Car Place to another mechanic for an inspection before you sign on the dotted line. read more

Bought a Jeep in February and there were mechanical issues from the start, 3 months later the transmission went out. A in depth diagnostic showed the repairs made from the initial purchase were bandaid fixes to get the car past the warranty. After a BBB complaint and spending almost 3 grand later, the dealership fixed it. Unfortunate to have a major repair months after a purchase. read more

Wow, All is all I have to say. They have been the best Car dealer I have ever worked with. Jason is super friendly and helpful. A couple weeks after I bought my 2006 Jeep LJ I had an issue with it. But being the nice guy he is, he went and took care of it and gave me a loaner car to drive around while it got fixed. I waited 6 months to buy a car because (1) I was not excited to deal with car dealerships and (2) I couldn't find the right car in my budget. I went to 5+ dealerships and browsed craigslist for hours to look for trucks before stopping at That Car Place. Not only did they have the exact car I was looking for in beautiful condition but they gave me a great price! They are mechanics and did some general work on the car before putting it on the lot. Every experience I have had with car dealers until this point has been negative but did not find the vehicle I was looking for from a private seller. I finally decided to check out a vehicle posted online at That Car Place. It is not in the best neighborhood but I was surprised to find so many nice vehicles in the lot (this guy likes Jeeps!) Once inside the gates I realized that this was a no pressure zone, what a nice surprise. The sales person approached me and answered any questions about the vehicle and did not push anything on me. After the test drive I said I might be back, he said ok and to let him know if I had any questions. No pressure to seal the deal that day and just gave me my space which I really appreciated. I went to another dealer where things were back to normal with someone pushing for the sale so I returned here to purchase the vehicle.
