Local Hayden Island spot. Great coffee and cheesecake. Owner is great and would recommend to anyone local to the island or visiting!

Love how close this place is to where I used to work in North Portland a nice not too busy and…read morerustic looking spot near Kenton park. The the coin inside is really nice and chill vibe. There's lots of seating and we came at a Thursday for lunch and it wasn't too packed. I had the Vietnamese Coffee flight to try out all the different ones, and the Ube cafe sua da was by far the best. I had the Vietnamese sizzling plate with baguettes and it was very good. The flavor is a little bit on the stronger side, but that's what I like so it was perfect for me and the portion was surprisingly enough even though it looked a little small coming out. Highly recommend eating it with with the baguette because dipping into the sauce was delicious. Look forward to coming for dinner sometime to try more!

It wasn't too busy, and we had a big party; really appreciated that they gave the celebrants complimentary desserts, which was a nice touch. The pandan rice cake with ube ice cream was a my favorite. We called earlier and they got reservations available to be made. The pho was perfect for the chilly weather. The broth was strong and flavorful, and the chicken was cooked well. My friend got the noodles with crispy chicken and mushrooms, and those were phenomenal. The Vietnamese platter would honestly make a perfect date-night meal. This has great variety and fun to share. The fries and wings were flavorful appetizers and a great way to start the meal. Service was great overall, but a bit hands-off after the food was served. I don't remember anyone checking back in on us. Nothing was wrong with the food, but it would've been nice to have that quick follow-up. Would definitely come back, especially to check out their brunch next time.

I'm always very opinionated and talkative in my Yelp reviews. I have a lot to say about food. But…read morecoffee I don't have much to say about. I dunno how to explain it. I just have trouble with it. The coffee at Koken was fine, I guess. It's strong. But what does that even mean? First I had it and it was pretty strong. Then I asked them to add more milk and it was a little too weak. So isn't it the amount of milk that matters? And isn't that very variable? Anyway, the reason why I came here is because I asked a barista at a different coffee shop what her favorite other coffee places are, and she immediately said Koken is her favorite. That's gotta count for something. But as I started saying, I'm more of a food person than a coffee person. And I got a dish here that I really, really liked. I forget what it was called. Their menu isn't online, so I can't look it up. Which is kinda refreshing. It's basically little pieces of bread that are sauteed/fried in some sort of African butter, with an African spice blend, and eaten with yogurt. And it was absolutely perfect. The warm, chewy, spiced bread with the cool, tart yogurt is just so great. Such a good combo. Simple. Not distracted by a bunch of other stuff. You really just get that wonderful contrast. The bread was perfectly chewy. And had a little bit of a crisp on the outside, in a perfect way. Check out the picture. Ultimately, it was just so homey, so satisfying, and so novel. It's like an hour long trip on public transit for me to get there, but I don't care. I know that I will be back.

I tried one of their food dishes called Fuul (Eritrean vegetarian stew) made of chopped onions, tomato, peppers, cheese, egg and beans. All of the ingredients were fresh and tasted good but it just tasted like bean dip. I mean the best bean dip I've ever had in my life but that wasn't what I was going for I had no chips lol.

Proud Mary in NE Alberta St, Portland…read more I was excited to come back home to Portland and hit up all my favorite spots in this week but I had to choose carefully because I wasn't taking on the Portland food scene alone, I'm bringing a friend with me who has never been to the city at all. I needed to set the bar high from day one. Proud Mary on Alberta Street was my first move, and it provided a light but delicious first meal paired with great espresso drinks. (And I needed to set the bar high for coffee in town because this friend own her own coffee shop in LA) This is the kind of place I bring people to when I want to show off what this city does best a casual environment with interesting food that doesn't take itself too seriously, in a space that just feels right. I went with the oatmeal and a side of hash, (a hash that has such a unique texture that I think about it pretty often now I love a unique potato eperince) but execution of the seasonal flavors in the oatmeal surprise me every time in the best way. They pay so much attention to detail of he flavor and presentation and that makes even humble dishes feel more special. My friend ordered the spring omelette and it was simple, it could have used a bit more flavor or texture or even an additional protien source but it was good non the less. When our cappuccinos arrived first, I remembered this is an Australian-owned café. Served with a dusting of chocolate powder the way an "apparently" proper Aussie capp should be. Both cups were genuinely excellent. For vegetarians, the menu gives you real options with actual thought behind them and of course their are so many dishes with meat that everyone can love, so that's a huge win for me Who it's for: first-time Portland visitors, coffee lovers, anyone who wants a brunch spot that earns its reputation. Strong start to any trip. Veg selection | Flavor execution | Value | Staff knowledge | Ambiance

I had the bambito geisha. The flavor profile was a bit too acidic for me. Also didn't taste like the usual geisha I like. Cute place and great service. French toast and pancake look bomb but didn't get a chance to try.
