I really want to love this bar. The drinks and the food are wonderful and the staff has always been friendly. The only issue is that after 10pm it's an utterly lost cause. The live music is way, way, WAY, WAAAY too loud. The actual music they're playing is great, unfortutately it's just positively DEAFENING. I mean I'm 28, I like loud music. But unless you're there to drink by yourself and not speak to a soul, it's a no go because there is no point in trying to have a conversation with anyone. I love authentic Irish bars, like this one, which has been around for almost 100 years... I forgot I was at the Pike in Long Beach, CA and thought that I was in some place in the Temple Bar neighborhood in Dublin, pretending to read a Joyce book. Just kidding. This place stinks. They do have a lot of live music, which is fun, and it smells like old, spilled beer, because a lot of s-heads come here on the weekend nights and talk-yell way too loud. But hey, you want a pint. Cool place to hang out with friends. A really good live band was playing there on a Friday night. The dance area is small but good enough. The crowd is not too rowdy and pretty chill. Seems like every time I come here I never remember why or how and I always end up here as a "we got kicked out of the last 3 bars, let's go to the Dubliner" sort of end up place. Tiny patio, crowds all around the bar and dance area, less so on the outside tables to the left as you walk in and around back, but the crowd went from College kids pubbing, 20 something's who didn't go to college. Decent bar tenders and I say decent because they aren't busy enough to not care about the customers banter, but still ignore you. 10 minutes for 2 Bluemoons and 2 Newcastles. Not a lot of people having more fun than at our first few spots we go to beforehand. Taxi pull up right out front and their tends to be a lot of fights due to the crowded smoking area out front. Come on a non late night Saturday. Preferably when a band is playing and pub, not club when you're here people. read more

The BF and I visited The Auld Dubliner for a late Friday night dinner while on vacation. The place was hoppin when we arrived, but we had no problem getting seated. The atmosphere was very relaxed, and I loved the decor of the place. There was even an Irish band playing--it was presented like an informal jam session as opposed to a real performance, which seemed like a perfect fit for this establishment (it really added some Irish flavor). Per our servers recommendation, we started off with the spicy potatoes appetizer and then shared the Irish Beef Stew--and it was more than enough food for two. I've come here twice when on a trip to a conference out in Long Beach. The location is perfect for those near the convention center, and honestly just a really cool place overall. The staff is excellent, and your bartender there knows how to pour a pint of Guinness (yes, there is a proper way to pour a beer like that), and the food is better than your average bar. Typically they have a band playing in here, and the talent can vary, but they are passable, and not overly loud. As for the food, great Irish grub here with very reasonable prices. I found myself here yesterday for lunch. Ooooooh. They have boxtys! I have not had a boxty in forever! It's a bit like an Irish crepe. I ordered one with corned beef. It was delicious with the right amount of hot mustard to give it a spicy bite. I wasn't quite sure though about the quartered boiled cabbage sitting on top of the boxty. But my boxty was tough! It didn't get soggy from the slightly wet cabbage. I couldn't believe how tasty the vegetables were though. Usually, side vegetables tend to be some sort of frozen mess but these seemed fresh. I'll have to come back in the evening when there's music and perhaps have a drinky or two. Otherwise, it was too bright (and sobering) in the day to put up with the sour bar smell. read more

In all my romantic fantasies, this is what I imagine an Irish pub to be while visiting Ireland. The place is loud, the decor is colorful and the food is rich and hearty. The Bangers and Mash are good. The sausage is crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. They have this appetizer where it's basically ground meat in a phyllo dough served with spicy brown mustard is great too. Shepards pie doesn't disappoint either. Drunk little me thought it was the OLD Dubliner...forgive me for not being so sober and cultured. Regardless, the place was alright. Not too shabby. Got inside and saw that there was a huge square bar feeding both sides of the room with a ton of people bombarding it. Reminded me of Shaun of the Dead when they were behind the bar and the zombies were trying to get in. Eventually we all fought through and got what we needed. The decor was dark wood and I don't know whether it's the lacquer that the carpenters use or if it's because there's so many patrons, but everytime a place is adorned with wood, it's always sticky. Then again, who cares when you're slammered right? Right! So, me and the crew heard Young Folks playing on the speakers and we all broke out in an impromptu live show. Nothing short of amazing if you ask me. I could really do without the smoking patio also being the place where they check your ID to get in. He was incredibly patient and helpful throughout the entire process. The waitresses were incredibly quick and patient, the other bar staff that helped us man the door were equally wonderful. If you didn't know this place was a chain, you could never tell. These folks went to great lengths to give it a real, "Irish" feel. Mismatched stools. Dark, worn wood everywhere. Yellow and red walls with vintage books, signs and mirrors all over the place. Musicians hanging out at a table, just playing--regardless of an audience. Even the layout of the bar is perfect. The food is fantastic. I've eaten here three times and had different meals each time. They were all spot on good. This is also one of the few places that has Smithwicks on tap. Christ, I love Smithwicks. If you're looking for a relaxing, inviting place to enjoy an adult beverage with your meal, stop by the Auld Dubliner. The place was packed to the hilt...I bet most were from out of town, since the bar is in what I was told is the touristy part of LB. When the best friend and I decided to go for a nightcap on a Monday night, we thought nothing would be happening in downtown Long Beach. For the most part, we were right, until we got to the Auld Dubliner. It was surprisingly active for a Monday night, and possibly the best bet in the area. While the weekend nights here would be difficult because it's popular yet holds a small space, the weekday nights were just right. Always packed, which may or may not be a good thing. Service is pretty quick, at least at the bartop. I love the live music that has been playing each time I've visited. It seems like everyone knows everyone. I've never tried the food because I'm honestly a little frightened, not because of the bar itself, just because of bar food in general. Three stars because there's just something that is a little off. Maybe it's the strange looks I get from everyone because I'm not a regular and they are. Who knows, but something about The Auld Dubliner isn't completely inviting. Maybe I'll become a regular and forget about these times but for now I'd rather be at Shannon's, down the street. I love the vibe in this place! Great band, great people, and great beer! When the band plays all you want to do is get up and dance even if there is no one dancing. Just be the first one to get on the dance floor and people will follow. Be sure not to get your toes stepped on by other people jumping up and down. In reading the reviews for The Auld Dubliner, it's interesting to notice the debate over whether this place qualifies as an "authentic Irish pub." Sorry folks, it does not. Not by a long shot. I've been lucky enough to sip many a Guinness in the pubs of Dublin and Galway, and I know that real Irish pubs have a distinct vibe and a character which simply cannot be replicated, because the most important component of an Irish pub is living, breathing, talking (and talking, and talking...) Irish people! The Old Dubliner is a corporate concept, and it shows. However, it is also a cozy, friendly establishment and by all accounts a very popular place when the sun goes down in Downtown Long Beach. My wife and I both liked the potato leek soup and the banger wontons. She enjoyed her Irish boxty potato patty. Unfortunately, my bowl of Irish beef stew left something to be desired. The meat was excessively fatty, the thick broth was very bland (even by Irish cuisine standards), and it basically tasted like stew that had been forked out from some can. The place gets three stars, but barely. The service was friendly and the beer was nice and cold. It also has a pleasant atmosphere. If I was in a crappy mood, it might only rate 2 stars, but I'm trying to be more humane these days. Just stay away from the stew and you'll be reasonably content. read more

If you are looking for an Irish bar in the LB area look no further. Their pub food is Irish and great. I love the shepherds pie and the curry chips. I've had several of the boxes and those were pretty on par with some places in Dublin. If you like sweet curry,e the curry chips are the best I have had in the LA area. Now for the beer, nobody serves up the guiness like they do. This place serves all the famous Irish beer and alcohol, harps, guiness, smith wicks, Jameson, yes...they got them all with super nice waitresses and bartenders. Go here for football or rugby games because they use setanta and fox soccer channel to get all the EPL games. Watched a couple of world cup games here and it was a blast. So was St. Patricks day. Just get here early though because I really can get crowded on those days. read more

Ahhhh the Auld Dubliner. I've always had an affinity for the Irish and this place satisfies my fix. The food is great. I had the chicken boxty which was runny but delicious and had me sopping up the sauce for every bite I took. And you can't have a meal here without a nice glass of Guinness or your choice of whiskey. I had a party bus and used this as a stop. They were great and pre-ordered some food for my party bus friends. When we got there they had a whole section reserved for us with family style servings. They made this easy, especially since no one in our party was really sober. read more
