I have been going to The Bagelry since I was in college at WWU, way back in 1984 when it first opened, and it is still THE BEST! There is a reason it is always busy! It is because it is THAT GOOD! What I love: The bagels are delightfully chewy without being "doughy". The texture is fantastic. The selection of FRESH bagels is second to none! The quality of the ingredients they use is consistently great, not to mention mainly locally sourced! Their sandwiches? SO GOOD! The place has this groovy, authentic, hippy-ish kind of "college-town" feel without being contrived. There are lots of places to sit and all kinds of interesting, slightly bohemian flyers on the wall to help pass the time while you wait in line with 20 other people. The service is fine! In fact, Ebony is delightful! Yay! And, to the gal who grumbled about the service? Come on, give me a break! If you have to get in and out in 30 seconds or less, go through the drive-thru at Starbucks! This is an experience! No, seriously! My experience at the Bagelry wasn't stellar, but it was okay. First off, the window system they have for ordering and pickup was a little confusing for me, and the woman at the window wasn't at all friendly, but I'm sure I was the 2000th person she had to tell to go to the other window, so I get that. I had a Sourdough Bagel with Tuna, and my friend had a Rosemary Bagel with Tuna. My bagel was pretty small, and very tough, I had to microwave it when I got home just to soften it up, which worked fine. The tuna was not a generous portion at all. We also got Tim's Cascade chips, they have a good variety to choose from, and I do love Tim's chips. Maybe I'll try a plain bagel next time and something different. For the price I was expecting more, maybe a little larger and more tuna. Just a side note. We went to old town to have a burrito and our favorite restaurant had just closed their doors for good the day before after 30 years in business, very sad. We all have our favorite restaurants, and we all need to get out there and support them, that is the fourth restaurant I enjoyed dining at that has closed in the last year. This is a very tough time for the small, independent restaurants, please make it a point to enjoy their menu or you may soon loose that opportunity. read more

Took close to 30 minutes to get two bagels and two coffees to go. We saw our drinks idling on the counter and inquired if they were ours only to be told that our drinks were still in the queue. Asked again ten minutes later and yes, they were our drinks. Saw employees rushing back and forth inside; two collided into each other while delivering orders. Great bagels. We got a breakfast bagel with egg and cheese. I wish they offered bacon or sausage on it also but we were happy with what we ordered. They were flavorful and crispy on the outside and perfectly chewy. Our main complaint is that the service was poor. They didn't take cash due to COVID-19 which I understand, but the guy helping us was kind of rude and snappy when I didn't see their sign. Finally, when the girl put our order on the table and called my name, she just walked away from me after I said thanks. This is why I deducted 1 star. I love me a fresh bagel and The Bagelry has so many options to choose from! I ran in for a quick lunch for a bagel sandwich and it was so good! They sure do get a lunch rush, but they took care of everyone quickly and have a super friendly staff! Bagel sandwich included chips and a slice of pickle, and got a drink separately. My favorite part was that they offer sprouts on your sandwich (for extra) - so good. I'll definitely be back for more! read more

TL;DR: If you use a coupon for a free bagel, they won't cut it for you, won't give you a knife, will make you pay for cream cheese as a separate transaction, will give you a plastic spoon to smear it on yourself, and will probably make you feel bad for using a coupon. I don't usually write negative reviews, but after a really awful experience at The Bagelry on Sunday, May 1, 2016 at about 10 a.m., I would like to share my poor experience. My friend and I were about to leave town to head down to Seattle. The friend we were staying with had the Big Blue Book, which is a coupon book for local businesses around Bellingham. The free bagel with no strings attached at The Bagelry caught our attention, and my friend raved about how wonderful the owner was and how he had a strong tie to the community. The line was pretty short but moved very slowly. When I was greeted by someone behind the counter, I requested a garlic bagel with cream cheese. They gave me at ticket, and I proceeded to the cashier. I didn't know that this was a cash only spot, and I only had $2 cash on me. I wasn't going to use the ATM when I was just about to leave town. I informed the cashier that I had a coupon and was prepared to pay the difference for the cream cheese with my $2. She immediately corrected me and said that I wasn't able to do that and could only get a plain bagel. This took me back a bit; wouldn't The Bagelry want to make money off of the upsells? After talking with the her a bit more, she agreed to let me pay for cream cheese as a side item in a separate transaction and gave me a plain unsliced bagel. I asked if I could get a garlic one like what I had requested at the beginning, so she grabbed one of those and wasn't very nice about it. When I looked in the bag, I found it was unsliced and asked if they could please slice it for me. A couple people came over to the cash register and told me they were unable to cut it for me and that the coupon only covered a bagel, and not the cutting? Great, so I asked for a knife and discovered there were no knives available. I had to use my hands to rip the bagel in half, which was very messy and didn't work out very well. The plain cream cheese on the side was a tiny scoop that was about $1.50 (I couldn't afford the $2.07 for the flavored cream cheese scoop). They gave me a plastic spoon to spread the cream cheese, which also did not work very well. They were very unfriendly to me, and the experience was honestly a bit humiliating. I use coupons as a way to discover new places and return if I have a good experience, but I wish I just went somewhere else so I didn't have to go through all that. I interacted with at least three different employees, all of which were not very nice or understanding. My friend said that if the owner had been at The Bagelry that morning, this very poor customer experience would not have happened. read more

I've been going to the Bagelry since I moved to Bellingham in the late 90's. It was then - and still is - pretty much the best bagel you can get in the tri-county region (if not beyond). Just walking into the place you can smell the yummy goodness of whatever they are baking that day. My favorite is the sourdough and the garlic. They don't toast their bagels, which used to bug me but now I understand why: a good bagel just doesn't need to be toasted. If you really want a warm bagel, ask for whatever's fresh out of the oven. Their cream cheese is also to-die-for, and the coffee's good too. What bugs me about the Bagelry is that they still, after all these years, are a cash-only business. While I admire their dedication to this concept, the fact is it's 2014 and the overwhelming majority of people use debit cards for most transactions. Yes, it would cost the Bagelry a small fee to process these transactions; but I do wonder how much more business they would generate if they accepted cards. (Yes, yes, I know there's a cash machine on the premises but it also charges a pretty hefty fee.) Speaking of money, their prices are pretty high. I just don't think it needs to cost that much to get a bagel with a scrambled egg and coffee. We often go elsewhere for breakfast because we can get more food for less money. But the fact is, if you want a really good bagel, there is only one place to go and that's why the Bagelry is still king in Bellingham. UPDATE! I'm pleased to report that the Bagelry is now offering TOASTED bagels, and this is worth a full star upgrade from me. Well done, Bagelry people, well done! These are the best bagels I have ever had! I am so picky about my bagels after having the privilege of eating here growing up. They did unfortunately raise the prices after covid and at times the staff is not super welcoming, but the food is worth it and the wait is never too long. I'm a big fan of the Bagelry whenever I'm in Bellingham! I often bring their bagels for trainings I'm holding, and they're always a big hit! If I'm lucky enough to have some time before a meeting, I like to come here myself and enjoy a bagel and a latte. They make a great latte and the ambiance of the restaurant is cool with all the bustle of patrons and yummy smells. I've only ever tried the garlic bagel with Italian cream cheese. It's just so so so so so good.....However, I've been meaning to branch out and give the others a try! The Bagelry is doing it right, that's for sure! read more

Bagels can be OK, but tend to be inconsistent in flavor from too salty to totally bland. While the cream cheese spreads are good, the bagels just don't seem to have the necessary consistent love in their preparation. Service is decent, but the bagels are smaller and less flavorful than the best bagels in Seattle and just less flavorful compared to Vancouver. Not sure why, but the blueberry bagels were a big disappointment with lackluster flavor. Wonder if they used some kind of canned blueberries or what went wrong. The challah bread looks very interesting, but did not try it. Parking options decent. read more

Best place for fresh bagels! Their bagels are the perfect consistency. Their lox and cream cheese is wonderful. The servers are really nice, and their shop promotes a lot of the local businesses. The bagels were okay, but the service was awful. We tried the curbside pickup and were told online that our order would be ready around 10:24 we checked in at 10:20 and didn't get our food until 10:57. I watched a bunch of people order and receive their food in the time I was waiting. On top of that I'm pretty sure they had our bagels ready at 10:24 and just never brought them because they were cold and stale by the time I got them. I was very excited to try this place but I was also very disappointed. Maybe it's an inexperienced staff? Not sure. We stopped in this cute town where The Bagelry is located on the way to Seattle from Vancouver. I ordered a plain bagel with butter, along with several breakfast sandwiches. The butter costed more than the bagel and when I inquired about it, the manager rudely told me I can go home and get my own butter. Since the kids were hungry, we completed the order. So sad that this place has such a low rating - I absolutely love it! Was worried when I came based on the reviews but I was in Bellingham for the day and was craving a bagel so I thought I would just give it a try despite what I read. I was SO impressed!! I'm not vegan but I am trying to cut down on dairy so when I saw that they had vegan spreads I was ecstatic. I got a sourdough bagel with their plain vegan spread and got a plain bagel with the vegan scallion spread and both were amazing. The bagels were fresh, toasted perfectly, and had the perfect bagel to cream cheese ratio. The staff was super sweet and the bagels were ready nearly instantly after I ordered which I wasn't expecting based off of a lot of the reviews. Bagels are good for a small town. Nothing to write home about but a noble effort outside of the northeast. Unfortunately they don't take cash and only visa or MasterCard at that. Staff is hit or miss. Can be friendly or very unfriendly. Been coming since 2002 but experiences are getting more and more lackluster. Oh well. Need to eat better anyway. Some better customer service would go far here. Just ordered and tried paying with cash (denied covid?), then card (denied Amex not accepted) and then some nice girl behind me offered to pay. I was so bummed by this and just left. I'm done for a while. Karin went with some Omelet which IMO it didnt look to tasty to me so glad I didn't get a Omelet lol. The place seemed to look clean IMO,so unlike some others who have posted I didnt see any dirty tables or whatever. Delicious bagels served by friendly people. I'm not a bagel eating person normally and have taken my time getting to the Bagelry. For months, people have been raving about the place. I get it. If you're in the mood for fresh made bagels and spreads, this is the place to go. With so many options, it can be difficult to know what to order. Fear not. Employees can help by making recommendations. I had an everything bagel with vegetable spread and a pesto cheese omelette. Absolutely delicious. I didn't have coffee, but it smelled wonderful. It's a relaxing atmosphere, which is perfect for a grumpy morning person such as myself. A friend treated me to breakfast my first visit. Often times, I think food tastes better when someone else pays for it. My theory is that this place is going to be good even if I pay for it myself. read more

Always dependable for a real bagel. Nice selection of bagels and cream cheese. I am a fan of the Everything bagel with scallion cream cheese. I usually pickup a half dozen to go along with a small cream cheese. Staff is super friendly and very helpful. You will also find a small selection of cheese and meats (can't call it Charcuterie... Just your typical deli meats). The space is large and clean with a nice view of Railroad Avenue (great for people watching). There are outside tables and chairs. Be advised they close early (currently 3pm Sunday and 4pm all other days). Also, no credit or debit cards are accepted (there is an ATM in the seating area. A sign advertises soups and omelettes (I have tried neither). Oh, don't skip the desserts! Today's visit reveled some awesome metal artwork on display... First of all, my dislike of the Bagelry has nothing to do with the bagels as they are the best in all of Bellingham. My issue is with the service. No one who works at the Bagelry EVER appears to be in a hurry and they put a lot more time and energy into the conversations they have with each other than the ones they have with their customers. Noticed I only had 15 minutes to order before they closed and I was 5 minutes away. All I wanted wad a bagel and a cup of coffee so I call in takeout order and the person on the phone acted like they didn't want to take my order. I asked do you take orders for pickup they said "we encourage online ordering and besides we're closing in 15 minutes" (exactly the reason I called in) okay so make me feel like I'm a pain in your heel because you wanna go home (I hung up). I used to love this place, we used to ride the bus from north county when we were kids just for the bagels. I came here a few weeks ago had no problem ordering at the window, was super stoked, came back again and they had a line down the street, gave it a 3rd try and received crappy service on the phone. I had a breakfast special and a latte. They were out of rosemary salt bagels so I ordered raisin. I ordered the eggs scrambled because the last several times there I've ordered the eggs fried, over medium, and they always came too raw and runny. So I thought, "How can one mess up scrambled eggs?" I also let the order-taker know this would be an order, for here, not to-go. She responded by asking if this order would be for here or to go. Really. So...20 minutes after ordering I was served eggs with absolutely no taste, very dry, hard, and rubbery tiny bits--nothing light or fluffy about them. The latte had a scratchy texture and over-extracted taste. The bagel was fine. Also of note: As I sat and waited for my order, an employee stood behind the counter (right beside my table) and drank from an espresso drink he had just made and ate food, while on duty.
