Had lunch here on the weekend with a friend. We got there right when it opened and had no wait getting seated. Outstanding service which made the whole dining experience fantastic. We each got the 6 hand roll set. Every hand roll was delicious with my favorites being the amber Jack roll and scallop roll. The fish to rice ratio is very generous on the fish which doesn't happen everywhere. The rice in each roll was perfect since it was not overly vinegary or sugary, which made the flavors of each bite come together perfectly. I will be back to try other hand rolls here! read more

A few other reviews mentioned this, but I failed to see them before dining: The Bar will not allow substitutions in any sets even due to allergy (I have a scallop allergy). I understand there is no obligation to substitute for allergies, but most places will as a courtesy, including Sugarfish & Kazunori in my experience. I don't think staff here noted allergies for cross contamination purposes either, as a prior reviewer mentioned. Separately, I don't think the meal was worth the price and likely will not be back. read more

Wow wow wow is all I can say about this place! The food was absolutely exceptional with the freshest fish and most amazing taste to everything. Marcelo the sushi chef was friendly and attentive and our waitress Zoey (sp) was so thoughtful with her assistance when I was trying to find the best gluten free options. Unfortunately the spicy anything can't be modified to be gluten free so I opted for the Lux 3 hand rolls with the help of Zoey and added the amberjack and yellowtail on, which was a GREAT choice. All the hand rolls were incredible and I left wanting more. My suggestion would be to order the amberjack for flavor and light fresh taste and round it out with something richer like the Hye which has a heavier creamier texture. Again, though both incredible and everything I ate I enjoyed! Big shout out the incredible staff who all worked together to provide an awesome first time visit for me. It's so nerve wrecking trying to find safe places to eat when you are gluten free and the whole team here really made my experience wonderful. I will mention this is not a certified gluten free kitchen so I suggest eating at your own risk level of acceptance, but I throughly enjoyed my experience and will be going back soon! The location itself is unassuming and lovely with just a few intimate seats at the bar which I enjoyed very much, the music was upbeat but not loud which makes it a nice little lunch or dinner spot. Went here for lunch and it was good. It's similar to most hand roll restaurants, though they don't offer as many options or customizations as Yunomi. The sushi tasted fresh and we didn't wait too long. Again, similar to most hand roll places, it's very small inside so large groups are not best. Plenty of parking around. read more

The girl who answered my call (questions as a first time visitor) was really sweet and helpful. It was the first time anyone has said "if you have more questions, feel free to call back! She is a GEM! I THINK her name is Anna but now it's been a couple of days. The sushi itself: 1. The fish was fresh so that was awesome!!! 2. Pricey given you are actually getting HALF of a roll (4 pieces) for the price of eight! They are really small. 3. Nori (seaweed) was very tough and chewy. Either it is stale or low quality. Since it tasted fine, I'm going to go with low quality. I don't believe it would be humidity from the rice since the rice here is not warm or wet. I have given four stars for the freshness and also the flavor of the spicy tuna. Having said that, I would rather pay for an entire roll with better nori. read more

Came here after a suit fitting nearby at The Grotto around lunch time. This was about 12:30pm and we were seated immediately. They mentioned they've only been open for 3 weeks. The restaurant was clean and the bathroom was clean. There's a parking lot as it's located in a shopping mall. The staff was very attentive, nice and accommodating. Been to a lot of hand roll places but this one had the crispiest seaweed. We got the 6 roll set. I'd give each one a 7.5-8/10. If I was in the area, I would definitely come back. read more

Pretty good! I tried the lux set and added the CUT and salmon handroll. Flavors were flavoring. My favorite was the negi toro and the HYE. CUT was pretty good too, but I was hoping for more Uni. Looking forward to come back as they have a pretty good value tasting for $35 where you get miso soup, 3 handrolls and a shot of sake. Everyone was friendly. They were a bit behind but I think because they're new, they're still finding their flow. Not bad though, will be back! read more

Ordered "to go" on door dash app. Here is my timeline: - Order says ready around 6:45pm - Come in at 6:40pm to ask if it's ready early by any chance - Waiter 1 says 5 minutes. - I come back in 5 minutes but waiting behind a group of little girls who are putting in a "to go"order with waiter 2 - after taking their order, waiter 2 helps me and checks on my order and tells me 10 minutes. - I wait.... 10 minutes pass - little girls get their order first (me now super confused about my order) - I ask waiter 1 what is happening. He says he will check on it and proceeds to "check on it" and then preoccupy himself with other tasks (imagine when you're in the office just walking around fast to pretend you're busy) instead of coming back to me to give an update. - by this time door dash has texted me that the order should be "ready" by the restaurants estimates - still nothing. (Side note I have a newborn that now woke up in the car with mom that's throwing a fit) - I try to cancel my order but it says no refunds because the restaurant is "prepping" it - I call over waiter 1 again who proceeds to talk about how the app is wonky on how it works and gives bad estimates, and how the girls got their order because it was a smaller order (I ordered 8 rolls... not huge) blah blah excuse excuse... now I assume they're making my order because now I'm having colorful discussions with waiter 1 - order finally ready at ~7:15 Side note, door dash texted the order was ready at 7:03 so someone clicked completed before they even finished. The vibe was friendly and the service was fast. The hand rolls were creative, with tangy sauce mixed into the fish so I didn't feel like extra soy sauce was needed. There's a seared wagu beef and uni roll that pretty popular. I liked it but prefer the fish and scallop options. My favorite is everything that has scallops. I'm not usually a big scallop fan but it was super fresh and flavorful. Quite honestly, all of the rolls are fresh and flavorful, some have a crunch that I think is crispy rice mixed in. My only recommendation is to add options with fresh and or pickled cucumber, radish and carrots. All of the rolls were just a protein. Unfortunately, my entire dining experience was overshadowed by an employee troubleshooting a printer issue just a foot away from me. For all 23 minutes of my visit, she was on SPEAKERPHONE with what I assume was the owner, discussing the problem at full volume. This mild situation seemed so stressful that another employee had to step in to help resolve this critical technical emergency. The constant distraction made it difficult to enjoy the meal. Actually better than any sushi place I've been to in el segundo and Manhattan beach. The fish always tastes fresh and I love the different specialty rolls they have. The fish to rice portion is perfect and I always end up ordering way too much and leave way too stuffed. Love this place! I didn't even get to take any pictures of the food cuz I gobbled it up so fast. That should tell you enough. I got the 4 set (no substitutions allowed) and 2 of the Wagyu hand rolls. I'm usually not a fan of the scallop or blue crab hand rolls bc sometimes they taste too salty or too mayo-y BUT WOW their crab and scallop hand rolls were soooo goood! I don't know what they do differently but they're doing it right. The Wagyu was so tasty and just so fatty, juicy, tender, Smokey, and seared. I got another one bc I just couldn't resist. The staff were very friendly. And whoever was the supervisor/manager (dressed in all black) was very friendly and very nice!! Shoutout to him. The ambiance was very clean, cozy, and elegant. I was originally craving poke, but decided to give this spot a try--and I'm so glad I did! The vibe is casual with all bar seating. I sat near the chef so I could watch the magic happen. Marissa, my server, was super friendly and gave me a thorough rundown of the menu. Since it was my first visit, she recommended the "Taste of the Bar" set--which includes your choice of miso soup or sunomono salad, 4 hand rolls, and a shot of sake or green tea. I chose the miso soup and hot green tea. Here are the handrolls I got and how it ranked for me: *Spicy Tuna Crunch* - 4/5 Not usually a tuna fan, but this was fresh and the rice pearls + cucumber added a really nice crunch. *Scallop* - 4.5/5 The scallop with kewpie mayo and masago was such a creamy, well-balanced combo. *Salmon Truffle* - 5/5 My favorite! Seared salmon with artichoke truffle, citrus juice, and lava sea salt = perfection. So flavorful and balanced--I'd come back just for this one. *HYE (minced yellowtail belly)* - 4/5 Beautifully made and flavorful. I'm not a big yellowtail person, but I could still appreciate the freshness and how well everything worked together. The food was excellent--while not strictly traditional Japanese, it was still high-quality and delicious. My toro uni roll had the largest piece of uni I've ever had--absolutely yummy! My friend and I were especially impressed with the chef. We visited on a Sunday afternoon, and all the staff were attentive and went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. Dine in review only: Ok- the food is AMAZING. Yes. No doubt. The wait was expected for a restaurant that only has less than 20 seats. (45min at 6pm). Suggestions: 1) get shade!!! A curtain, blinds, SOMETHING to block the horrendous heat and bright light *beaming* onto your face as the sun sets. 2) Hire more help, staff was so stressed about to-go orders, barely got service for dine in customers. 3) Because we are on bar seats, we can see a full view of the kitchen. When you a customer can see boxes, Bounty paper towels spilling onto the floor... it's just not appetizing. If you're going to charge the money you do, consider cleaning up your ambiance. I was hoping that this was going to be the new Kazunori of El Segundo but it did not meet expectations. Overall, there was a miss in several categories. The seaweed was not as fresh and the ginger and wasabi were not on Kaz levels. Not one hand roll was OMG wow. Pricing might be even higher than Kaz so that's a bit disappointing. One thing that Kaz has is the sushi rice, in the amount of vinegar they use. The bar rice is a bit on the harder side. Hopefully they improve as they go. read more

I ordered the Lux 3 Hand Roll set (Salmon Truffle, HYE, Negi Toro), along with Blue Crab, Scallop, and Toro-Uni Hand Rolls to-go for my dinner. While the fish was really fresh, the heat from the sushi rice caused the seaweed (nori) to steam inside the takeout box. This made the nori soggy and difficult to bite through. I wouldn't recommend ordering takeout unless they use protective film or provide separate packaging for the nori (similar to the "pull-tab" packaging style found in Japanese rice balls "Onigiri" that you purchase from Japanese delis) to preserve its crispness. Additionally, I found the rolls to be a bit overpriced for their size, as they were much smaller than those I've had at other sushi places. Looking at photos from dine-in customers, the portions seem larger, so I'm not sure if the size differs for takeout orders. I might try dining in next time to see if the quality and portion size make a difference. read more

We had the pleasure of chatting with Vladimir the head chef (forgive me if I butchered the spelling) and he was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate. He walked us through the fish selection in such detail you could tell everything was fresh and thoughtfully curated. And yes I'm a foodie so of course I had to try it all! Every roll was crafted to perfection the flavors the textures and the presentation everything was on point. El Segundo just got a whole lot tastier.
