The BEST place for a mens haircut. Came here for the very first time on friday 9/18 about half an hour before they closed. My fiance needed to be cleaned up before our wedding and with the reviews i figured it was better than supercuts. Right off the bat we were greeted and my fiance got right in. Long story short, dave and gary are honestly the coolest dudes ever. They're very personable and make you feel like youve been life long friends even though you just met them. Gary was the one who did my fiances hair but they both do stellar jobs!!! Extremely inexpensive for the work they do. They also take their time which is an A+. They kept us about 30 min past their close time just because gary was making sure everything was perfect; they dont rush you out the door!! I HIGHLY recommend these guys if you want the best haircut/face shave of your life!!! read more

I had a business trip planned for Vancouver and decided to get a clean up trim before business meetings the next day. I had called and made a reservation about 3 hours prior to my estimated arrival and had spoken with David. Traffic was bad and the stormy weather was worse and my arrival was delayed. I kept in contact with David to let him know that my progress was slow and I was fine with cancelling the appointment. He insisted that he wait and I could get my haircut whenever I arrived. Upon arriving at the small but clean and classic Barber Shop, I found out that David was actually done for the day but had hung around just to cut my hair. This guy is cool, charming, professional, and has a great story. The haircut was awesome and the conversation great. I felt like I left looking great and had a new friend as well. New to the area and I wanted to like this place since they support the military (according to other reviews). Called on a Tuesday @ 1108 for a Friday appointment @ 0800. Showed up early to beat the PDX traffic and was told I wasn't even booked. I was told to come back later... Which put my other plans on hold. Since appointments are best because they help plan a busy day, this change was inconvenient at best. I would suggest a system that can be booked online with maybe a credit card hold that can guarantee a customer's place, therefore there are no screw ups like what happened. read more

I moved from SoCal and needed to find a place that I could get my hair cut at regularly. I stopped in here this morning and lucked out with a short wait. David was very welcoming and really funny. I felt like I have been coming here for a long time. I learned that they actually take appointments unlike most other barber shops which is great because I don't have time to sit around for hours waiting. I've been going to see Gary for about 2 years and he's done a fantastic job since day 1! I'm usually super busy so I love being able to schedule an appointment with him (except on Saturday), truly makes my life way easier! I get my haircut every 2-3 weeks and from time to time I have him trim my beard! You have to be careful with who you let cut your hair, could end up looking busted until that next cut! Since most individuals only read the first sentence or two of a review let me start with this: THIS WAS THE BEST, MOST THOROUGH HAIRCUT I HAVE EVER RECEIVED IN MY ENTIRE LIFE! I have been looking for a new barbershop to go to that will consistently satisfy my monthly haircut needs and after two or three months of looking, I am absolutely positive I will never go to any other barber or salon stylist again. My barber was Gary (there are only two that run the entire place, Gary and the owner) and he was unbelievably thorough, accommodating, kind, social, and VERY SKILLED at his craft of cutting hair. Haircuts are $17 which is a ridiculous bargain for the end product they produce, I would have easily paid $25-$30 without batting an eye just because of the care and attention to detail they have towards their clients haircuts. You will never have left over hairs that you have to cut or trim when you get home and you will never have to be concerned about receiving a bad haircut even if it's a more detailed or complex style, Gary (and I'm sure the owner as well) are VERY talented barbers, I've never been to a true barbershop that has a barber that knows his way around clippers, straight edges, and/or razors as well as Gary does... I was almost speechless when he finished because of how good of a job he did. So bottom line is if you're looking for a new barber shop to go to, go to the Barber Pole because you will get exactly what you want at a very reasonable price, can't wait to go back in a month or so! Professional and fun environment, both David and Gary have great personalities that coincide with eachother. The haircut was top notch quality and the fact that they support the military with $5 off regular price was even more amazing. UPDATE 07/30/15: Gary reached out to me on Yelp and offered a refund or a free service, which was definitely not necessary and greatly appreciated. I've amended my original 2-star review to three, just for the quality of customer service alone. Maybe my head reacted poorly to the shaving cream or something? Original review as follows: This is a tough review to write. Guys were great, friendly, and welcoming -- came in for a head shave/beard shave combo via straight razor. I should note that Gary was assigned to me, not the owner Dave, who was quickly tied up with another customer. Don't know if Gary's still learning the straight razor or not, but I don't think that really justifies the beating my head took under his blade. I've done straight razor shaves before, and due to the occasional blemish or tough spot already present on my head (or my skin's sensitivity), I might end up with some redness or even a nick or two, but they'll go away within a day. I also shave my own head semi-weekly with a Merkur double-edged safety razor, and I rarely, if ever, nick myself. So it was alarming how much my head was on fire by the end of this shave... Should've known it was getting bad when Gary kept trying to do things to calm the rage my hair follicles were in, via cold compress, hot compress, cold water rinse, eucalyptus oil, plus an aftershave something or other that burned like the surface of the motherfrakkin' sun. Shave also went far longer than quoted -- originally told 30-45 minutes, it took over an hour just for the head alone, and I ended up having to leave before we could get to the face. To Gary's credit, despite going over my bearded area already with an electric razor, he only charged me for the head shave, hence why this isn't a one-star review. Only after leaving did I realize how nicked-up I was, with razor burn and blood marks across the sides and back of my head, plus razor burn on both the back and front of neck (some of which was also caused by the electric razor... I never get burn from an electric razor, so I'm still trying to figure that one out). To make matters worse, this was just before a ten-year high school reunion, so I was forced to buy a hat from Freddy's and cover up my dome. Only now, Wednesday, five days after the fact, is my head almost back to normal. Again, I'm bummed to have to write this, as Gary and Dave were fantastic people, great to talk to, and Dave did a great haircut on the older gentleman next to me; I also know straight-razor shaving is bloody (heh) difficult, but whatever happened to my head was not pleasant. Go for the friendly service and reasonable prices, but if I were you, I'd ask for Dave if you need a straight-razor... Or maybe just stick to haircuts when you visit. Sorry guys. :/ read more

I recently followed Gary to his friend David's shop. Together they make a very talented pair. The shop is well lit and clean. They do everything you would expect a traditional barber to do. I get a 1-1/4 fade and beard trim. The entire experience is premium and the results are always consistent. Plenty of people comment on how even my fade is and how well my beard is shaped. Just say no to men's chain salons trying to play the auto shop sports bar vibe. Be real... you're getting your hair cut and what happens afterward (how you look for the next 4-6 weeks) is of paramount importance to the faux experience of a hairdresser standing on a concrete floor and using a toolbox while you watch SportsCenter. Do yourself a favor and visit a real, unpretentious barber shop where the emphasis is on old school "guy company", looking good, and being real. We tried this place based on the Yelp reviews and they are no fluke. Both my son and I went home to a very happy wife/mom. We didn't just look "good" or "better", it was more like " wow, you guys look amazing". Dave has been in this business a long time and it shows. Call ahead to make sure there is a slot for you, because demand is high and you might have to wait a while if you just drop in. Even so, participating in the genuine barbershop banter while you wait is part of the experience, so yeah never mind, just drop on in. read more
