Update: since writing this review, an employee of this restaurant has privately messaged me to call me all sorts of names and threaten to beat me up, all because I said they make a shitty milkshake and that no one smiles. These are the people your money and tips support. My original review had two stars, but clearly that had dropped to one. ------------------- So so SOOO disappointed. The decor and vibe of the exterior seem like the restaurant will be so hip and fun. However, as soon as you are (NOT) greeted by the staff, the experience goes downhill fast. The female cashier did not smile one time during our conversation as we placed our order. We asked her simple questions, to which she half-answered, half-shrugged off both. I wanted to know if their Cookie milk shake was cookies and cream or maybe Biscoff, and she said "Uh, I don't really know what kind of cookies they use but it's a cookie." Did not offer to ask the chefs, and does not seem like she cared to find out to do her job well. Then we asked if she would recommend the french fries over their mac and cheese. She said "Um, it's pretty popular." She meant the mac and cheese, but did not offer her preference. She then brought us my husband's beer while I was standing outside the restroom waiting for him. She didn't say thing, just looked at me while holding his beer. I was holding our infant, but asked her to place the beer on the shelf next to me. She did, but said no words and walked away. The rest of the staff would not smile while making eye contact with us either, only when chatting amongst themselves. The entire restaurant needs a lesson on friendly customer service. I understand that HMB is a beach town and there are only so many options if you want to stay close to the beach, but it doesn't mean we as customers have to come to your restaurant if everyone is unfriendly. In terms of food, the only "good" item was the fried mac and cheese. It was salted well but there was nothing revolutionary about the flavor. It just tasted like noodles, cheese, and a good breading. I would inhale these if I were 22 and tipsy, but I would not go out of my way to return here just for fried mac and cheese. The burger was meh. Just a burger. The meat lacked salt and the bun was cold. Seriously, we paid $14 for a burger smaller than my palm, and on a bun that was just pulled out of a bag? We are in the age of social media-hyped food. Come on, that is just lazy. Last thing, I am appalled by all who praised their milkshakes. They cost $9 (which is more than most large containers of ice cream at the grocery store), and come in the small 12oz mason jars. We ordered the chocolate milkshake and it was literally just cold, frothed chocolate milk. No ice cream, not even ice. I have never been so disappointed in a milkshake in my entire life. You know who makes great milkshakes for under $5? Jack in the Box, McDonalds', even IHOP. The milkshakes here just shameful. We will not return here. read more

My little family loves driving out to Half Moon Bay for an early dinner. We usually pick a nice day where we can watch the sunset after a drink or bite to eat. We stopped at The Barn and ordered from inside. It was only after ordering and paid that I noticed the Veteran's discount, but wanted to share that for all of you who qualify. We ordered a couple beers, a what the cluck sandwich and a burger and fries. My baby girl loves fries, so she ate that and a few bites of my burger. Burger, grilled cheese, and BLT were all A grade. BLT won day given surprise size and bacon quality. Fries and drinks also very good. Bit pricy but worth paying for quality. All sandwiches were not small, not just large bread. Only downside was the wait for food. It was long, around 30 minute stables requiring customers to stay near food window. The Barn, no doubt, had origins as an actual barn but has since been transformed into an eatery. They serve breakfast and lunch and have outdoor seating only but had covered and heated options. They have limited parking. We ordered and waited an acceptable amount of time for the restaurant was at maximum capacity. We ordered their fried Mac and cheese squares. These had me wanting more for their taste were exceptional. Their chicken sandwiches were both light but filled with flavor and their BBQ Pork sandwich was the best I have experienced. The milkshake that was consumed had us turning in an empty glass before we were done and even the straw fries, having the appearance of frozen beginnings, were not the case. Only freshly made fries could have given us the satisfaction that our fries had. The Barn is a gem worth traveling to and worth waiting for because like the restaurant's humble beginnings, those within their walls have dedicated themselves to excellence. read more

Went on a sister day and ended up coming here for lunch! I love how simple the menu was they had all the classic favorites for lunch like burgers, sandwiches, salads, and a few breakfast items. It was well priced and delicious! I loved the garden and the outdoor seating was clean and comfortable. I appreciated the blankets on the benches as well. This place is really cute with outdoor seating, twinkle lights, fire pits, and a place to play cornhole. They also have blankets for people to use when it gets chilly. The food, however, is bland. I got a cheeseburger which was okay. The fries were bland though. My friend got the mac and cheese balls and there was no seasoning on them at all. I saw other people getting salads and they looked good, so I'd suggest maybe trying one of those. The vibes are cool here but the food was mid at best. read more

I get it's supposed to be spicy but I can't handle spice. It was good without the aioli but the small amounts I did put on was a nice touch. I'm sure a spice lover would really appreciate it. Decided to try this place out after a morning hike in Half Moon Bay. We went right at opening and were the first customers there on a Friday morning! I believe they only serve breakfast on Fridays and Saturdays. The place itself is super cute and looks like such a nice place to grab food with friends and family when visiting. They also have a grass area for people to play cornhole and giant jenga! Plenty of tables for seating as well. My friend and I ordered the avocado toast with bacon and a side of scrambled eggs, breakfast burrito, and a side of fries. The avocado toast was on a perfectly toasted piece of sourdough and was topped with arugula, tomatoes, and pickled onions. I added bacon which they chopped into small pieces and put on top. The pickled onions were such a nice touch and I really enjoyed them! The breakfast burrito was also amazing! It has eggs, potatoes, avocado, and chorizo. Super filling as well. My friends and I came for Sunday lunch at 1:30PM, and the line was short. We waited 30 mins for our food, a little long considering what we ordered. There is only seating outside and on picnic tables! The space and building is super cute! Parking is free and around the restaurant. I tried the barn burger with avocado ($14), mac attack ($7), chili bowl ($9), horchata milkshake ($9.5), and matcha lemonade ($4). Burger was solid, nice, plain, and simple. It was pretty big as well, so you'll definitely be satisfied. Chili was pretty good, a subtle spicy kick and hearty. Mac attack was our favorite. Each cube had a great crunch, and the mac and cheese was cheesy, creamy, and so yummy with the tar tar like sauce. Horchata milkshake was delicious but on the watery side, not decadent or thick. The matcha lemonade was alright; it was refreshing, tart from the lemon, and matcha flavor was apparent. I wasn't the biggest fan of the flavor combo and wished I got the ollalieberry instead. We went to this burger joint after the rave reviews it received on Check Please Bay Area. We had the veggie burger, mac and cheese bites, and milkshakes. The burger was ok, but not particularly flavorful. The mac and cheese get a similar review, and the container you get the ranch dressing in has an opening that is narrower than the cube of food, which just seems a little shortsighted. The milkshakes were perfectly fine, but also pretty standard. There is one single stall restroom, so going to the bathroom involves a long wait. We spent $60 on a pretty average meal (also had a beer, but not my first choice as a number of the selections were out). We shared the mac and cheese, so it was a fairly light size portion. So I would say that this place is really not as wonderful as the reviewers on Check Please made out. And you are definitely paying for convenience to Half Moon Bay and other beauty spots. But you get to sit next to a busy road with constant traffic noise, so not exactly tranquil! read more

My husband and I went bike riding and planned to eat at The Barn afterwards. I read a review of someone who was not pleased with the fries. They said the restaurant was generous with the fries; however, the fries were not good in that they tasted and looked old. I ordered What the Cluck (chicken sandwich) and the fries (Why not?). Well, I can truly say that the other person was spot on! Those are the worst fries ever. They looked like pieces that were left after the good fries were all served. I don't know what oil they use, but that may have something to do with it. My sandwich was $18 and the fries were $8. I would go back (if ever I find myself in Half Moon Bay) because my chicken sandwich was really good, but save your money and DO NOT BUY THE FRIES!!!! read more

This is a lovely outdoor spot to get lunch in Half Moon Bay. There is parking available and counter ordering within. The heaters were not working and it was pretty cold. Service was very friendly. The spot and concept is awesome. Love that they use a local farm for the beef. Maybe we came on a day where the kitchen was backed up but we waited a crazy amount of time for our food. Good quality but nothing to rave about as far as burgers go. My tomato bisque was fantastic and had a spicy kick to it which I liked. We went on a Saturday during lunch time and we found parking quickly & there was about a 10-15 min line to order your food. There was plenty of seating and loved how they added the garden space to accommodate more people! We ordered a variety of food: Half Caesar Salad (pretty standard), Mac Attack (THE BEST ITEM ON THEIR MENU IMO!), a Burger, a Grilled Cheese, & Barnold Palmers. Everything was delicious, however, my friend ordered a side of fries and received a separate scanner for them and never got them by the time we all finished eating (she did get a refund tho). You will not regret stopping here, in fact it may make your day at half moon bay! We stopped in thinking we would get a fancy burger and it outdid our expectations. First, the food was incredible. We tried the "Hot Farmer" burger and the "What the Cluck" sandwich and we loved both. These two were a perfect combo, very different but delicious. The Hot Farmer and a spicy sauce which gave it a little kick but not too spicy. The creamy goat cheese spread on the chicken sandwich was to perfection. We got a side of fries (that comes were their great ketchup - it is thicker and much better than the usuals) and a shake. You can't go here your first time without getting a shake! We tried the cookie shake and it was a caramely chocolate base with small chunks of cookie/brownie bites. SO GOOD!! There is no seating indoor but they do have outdoor covered seating. There is a "Beer Garden" just outside too with many picnic tables and lots of space for kids to run around. Staff was friendly, bathrooms were clean, the wait was a little longer than we expected but it was definitely worth the wait. Be sure to make sure they are open, they are closing for the next couple months in the coming weeks. read more

I don't have burgers very often so I try a new spot every time I decide to have one. I was not disappointed in the slightest when I pull off the road into this cool looking spot. They allow dogs outside and we had just come from the beach, so what could be better than a barn burger and an Arnold Palmer. It's a walk up counter that you order from and then there is a buzzer that alerts you when your food is ready. Quick service, both the cashier and worker at the pick up window were friendly. The barn burger was perfectly season and cooked to perfection. It was juicy, it was flavorful and it was one of the most satisfying burgers I've ever had. It really put a lot of burgers I've had in my life to shame. I was beyond happy I stopped here and so were my dogs because we always love a place that'll make plain patties for the pups. We sat outside in a nicely shaded area with plenty of picnic table space. I can't wait to visit again. I left very full and very relaxed. My friends and I visited on a Sunday, and we ordered right before the line got really long around 12:45pm. We waited about 30-40 minutes for our food. The BLT ($13): Ooo the cashier really sold us on the BLT!! I asked her if she recommends the BLT or the Barn burger and she said "Are you getting avocado ($2) with the BLT? If so, always the BLT." I gotta say, she was right. I will still be back to try a burger because yay farm to barn!! Affogato Milkshake ($9.25): Best coffee milkshake I ever had!!!! Vanilla milkshake with a shot of espresso. YUM. Hefty price tag for a milkshake but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Fries ($7): Their fries kind of remind me of In-N-Out fries for your reference. The main stars of the show are the fries and milkshakes. The fries are crispy and lightly salted. I'm not sure what salt they use but it got us to come back within the next week . The matcha milkshake is matcha with vanilla ice cream. Not a lot of matcha, but it still tasted delicious and a nice treat. The affogato milkshake had the subtle hint of espresso. Both drinks weren't too overly sweet. The textures were on the milkier side instead of thick milkshakes! There is plenty of seating outdoors where you can enjoy the fresh air and scenery. There is parking both in the front and towards the back. We came on Sunday around noon and while it was decently busy, our wait was only about 15-20 minutes. We had lunch at The Barn on a sunny day, which was perfect since all the seating is outdoors. We tried the Barn Burger, Mac Attack (mac and cheese bites), fries, and the sweet & spicy slaw (they let me do half and half). Overall, the food was very good--the mac and cheese bites were hot, cheesy, and crisp, though I thought a salsa or marinara dip would have made them even better. Fries were thin and crispy, similar to In-N-Out's style. The burger was juicy and fresh with a tasty sauce, and the lemonade was refreshing and full of flavor. I've been twice now and both times were a great experience! The Old School Pork (sweet) with crispy onions added is my favorite! Delicious, juicy and so flavorful. I also love the fries they're super salty, which I enjoy. The outdoor eating area is kept super clean with spots in the shade or the sun. Perfect place to end a day after hiking along the coast. I had the classic burger and it was perfectly cooked. I'm a big fry guy and they definitely delivered with a tasty not-greasy and big portion of thin cut fries. The seating area is all outdoor comunal picnic bench style. Gas heat lamps everywhere, it was overcast and rainy but the seating area was warm. Service was quick, but there was only one other group there so I don't know how they are under high volume. Well we wanted to drive somewhere to the coast to cool off since the Bay Area was suppose to hit almost 100 degrees hence thought of Half Moon Bay it's one of our favorite places to visit. We left by afternoon given the heat we knew there will be traffic on the way to HMB that was a wise decision we did got caught in traffic but still not bad at least it was moving steadily at 40 mph. We had heard about The Barn (thanks to Yelp reviews) so thought of checking it out. There are good parking spaces in front as well as backside of the restaurant. There is no indoor seating only outdoor but it's well shaded so didn't mind at all . We loved the outdoor vibe plus there are more seating at the Beer Garden too but it's not shaded. We stood in line which was a bit long so took some time for our turn to come we were ok with that since it gave us some time to check the menu board. Here are the things we ordered- 1) The Hot Farmer Burger (medium rare) - Pomponio Ranch burger local pasture fed beef from asan Gregorio served with all things special,white cheddar cheese,fried onion rings, tomatoes, arugula,dressed in our homemade Barn Buttermilk , made spicy with Barn special pickled jalapeños & sriracha aioli . We loved the burger it was juicy, flavorful, crunchy & not at all heavy burger bread was soft . Sadly I had to spilt it with my husband but next time I will have it all by myself... I loved it very much!!! 2) What the Cluck - 1/4 pound organic chicken breast marinated with lemon oregano buttermilk goodness prepared crispy or grilled served on Acme ciabatta with goat cheese, arugula, tomatoes & Barn made buttermilk dressing . We choose grilled chicken, sandwich was good portion size again we spilt the sandwich so it was not heavy for us only thing is we found it little bit chewy otherwise it was good. 3) Storm side Mac & Fry - It comes with Fries & 2 pieces of Mac & Cheese fried cubes. Fries was ok piping hot but little heavy on salt for us ( we prefer less salt) good portion size for us . Mac & Cheese fried - it was superb I absolutely loved it very crispy outside very soft inside again this was not heavy for us since we had 1 each. I am still dreaming about it. Darn it was sooo good !!! For drinks we choose Beer - Calidad Mexican style Larger & Hop Dogma IPA. Both were good the glass was small size but chilled which was sooo good given it was almost 80 degrees in HMB. I loved Calidad more then Hop Dogma IPA. Overall it was a wonderful experience the all female staff was wonderful & quick. They have bowls filled with water for dogs too which we loved it. This place is a local favorite. Anyone driving through town, into town, out of town can't miss this place. It's a great spot to go to for a quick bite and great beers. They have farm to table salads. Always fresh and local. My favorite is their Caesar salad. It's full of flavor and they make their own dressing. I've seen them put it together. If you like anchovies this is the perfect one for you. Each one is made to order. My next favorite is their BLT. They choose Ciabatta bread for the vessel and it has a nice crunch. The bacon to lettuce ratio is perfect. You can even add their fried onions too!!! I recommend this if you want extra crispness in your sandwich. There is also a beer garden and they are pet friendly. Only note, no pets in the barn. Except if it's a service dog of course. They have local music and events there too. There is ample parking but be also be kind to the neighborhood around it. Miramar beach is right down the road. After your lunch or dinner you can take a lovely stroll to the beach to walk off your amazing meal. If you're in town or live here, run don't walk. You won't be disappointed. read more
