Yesterday, I took my two youngest kids fishing at Big Bear Lake. I wanted to introduce them to where I spent so many childhood summers and winters, fishing and skiing, respectively. This being July, needless to say, we went fishing. After a few hours of fishing, complete with a few bass, we head into town to see what we could do about grabbing a meal. After some driving around, I realized that many of the places I'd visit as a kid were closed and/or gone, so I turned to Yelp, eventually deciding on The Barnstorm Restaurant. This little gem is located within Big Bear's small airport, which I am embarrassed to admit I didn't figure out until we pulled into the parking lot. The name should have been a dead giveaway. I blame the sun and the hunger. Food: The menu, which others have been kind enough to photograph, has something for everyone. I ordered the Veggie Cheese Omelette, egg whites only, no cheese, with fresh fruit and wheat toast. The fruit comes with a light dusting of nutmeg, an unexpected yet appreciated addition. The omelette was delicious, and the vegetables were both plentiful and properly sautéed. My daughter ordered the Chili Cheese Barn Burger with a side of sweet potato fries. It was huge, and the patty appeared to be made in-house. She loved it! My son ordered the Mexican Omelette with a side of cottage cheese, another hit! We all enjoyed our meals and would order them again. Service: Service was swift and professional. The man who seated us also took our orders. He was the only staff member I saw during our visit, but we never felt like the place was understaffed. Our server--who could very well have been the proprietor--was attentive without being overbearing, and he brought out the food quickly and kept our drinks filled. I have no complaints. Ambiance: This is an airport restaurant; rather, it is the airport's sole eatery. Our seats were in small room with perhaps six tables and only a window between us and the runway. Nobody flew in while we were sitting there, but I bet it's a cool place to take young kids if one happens to know a plane or helicopter will be arriving or departing. As one would expect, the restaurant was themed around flight, with flight charts and other airplane-related items making up the décor. It is a tranquil place to enjoy a quality meal without any fanfare or fuss. I recommend The Barnstorm Restaurant to anyone looking for a good meal without a ridiculous wait. Bon appétit! read more

This place was ok. The family were very nice and all, quick service too. I ordered Eggs Benedict, I don't know what sauce was on my eggs, but I do know one thing for sure - it sure as hell wasn't hollandaise. (Unless it came out a can or something), no flavor, no lemon/butter hints, just gloop. I'm always weary of entering an establishment for the first time to hear the owner almost immediately complain to customers about their financial woes. Tried this place the other weekend while up at the cabin, service was very friendly, it was cool being on the "runway" food was pretty good, however everything seemed to be cold. And our pancakes were still raw towards the middle- which was a bummer, Especially because there were only 2 other parties in the restaurant. The weirdest part was the coffee was rarely hot. Airport restaurants tend to have a food monopoly. Pilots don't want to go far for to eat. This place was above average. Service was top notch thanks to Stephanie. Food was C+ The tables here are very close together, so beware of what you say. Everything will be overheard. The table next to us didn't appreciate our political views. read more

Pros: View from inside the restaurant is amazing. Excellent food. We did not wait long for the food to be served. Cons: the chicken fried steak is small. The staff didn't seem like they wanted us there. They read the bill amount out loud in front of other customers, instead of discreetly placing it on the table like other restaurants. It can be difficult to find the place because the sign on the outside is small. read more

While everyone waits in long lines in the cold at the Grizzly Manor Cafe & the Teddy Bear Restaurant (no knock to them, they're both great as well) you can always find us here at the Barnstorm Restaurant at the Big Bear Airport. My family was leaving big bear this morning and my brother found this location on google. I had driven down the mountain to run errands and get coffee before meeting them up. Realized this location was close to home and was located at the airport where they held helicopter rides. They were open early so why not despite the reviews on Yelp. Service was great, very attentive. Coffee and waters were filled without having to ask. My brother has spilled his coffee and the server came over and cleaned up the spill along with moving us since the linen on the table had gotten soaked. Food came out very quickly considering only four of us but we over ordered around 6 dishes. Prices seem a little hearty but honestly we were not bothered. The quality was worth is along with the service. Corn beef and hash, this came with side of hash brown, potatoes or fruit and biscuits and gravy or toast. Blueberry French toast- this was great not to overwhelming sweet perfect. Veggie omelet my mother has gotten this was demolished by her came with sides just like the corn beef hash had offered. Salmon Benedict- lox style salmon" smoked" brother wasn't very into this but the French toast and the sides the corn beef hash offered made up for it. Crab cake Benedict- this is what I had gotten. I loved loved this. I'm not a fan of English muffin which this didn't come with. The crab was actual crab! Perfect and came with the same choices I could've gotten with the corn beef hash. I feel bad leaving a 1 star review but this is for people with babies who can sit up properly but may be on the small side! My 1 year old literally slipped out of this high chair due to there not being a crotch restraint in place to keep him from falling out- before I could even get him strapped in. As a result he hit his face on the wooden part in the front, and bled under his eye. He has a black eye now a few hours later. The server wasn't concerned, didn't offer an apology or check to see how he was. The food isn't bad here but after that I was pretty angry about the whole experience. Too bad Renee is gone, she was so sweet and would have taken care of this and been kinder about the whole thing. I looked up the regulations for high chairs and a crotch restraint is required. I usually get the eggs Benedict but today I went for the crab cake Benedict & it was excellent! Fresh crab cakes & perfectly poached eggs yum... I do get the hollandaise on the side because it's so rich but that's just me. This has been my top breakfast place for many years I love to come here & get a window seat to watch the planes. I've also had great dinners here but I think they're breakfast brunch only since the owner passed. She was such a sweet lady. I'm not sure who is running this place now but hopefully they bring back dinner eventually! My only complaint is it was very warm too warm for me. This restaurant has been on my list of restaurants to try in Big Bear. I was drawn to it because of the location of it being at the airport. My husband and I decided that we should just go and see if we have found another Big Bear favorite. We went for breakfast on a Wednesday around 9:00am. It was not crowded at all. There were only a few tables occupied and they all seemed to be of locals. We sat at a table near the window in the corner so we had privacy (not that we really needed it) and to be able to see the planes come in and out. We were here on a Wednesday so it turned out that we didn't see any planes land or take off while we were there. That was a disappointment but it was a weekday so not sure why I expected it to be busy. So here's my review: Wait staff: Very friendly and welcoming. One thing that caught my attention was that they both had dirty aprons on. Honestly I thought it was kind of gross but I always want/try to look past things like that. They were attentive and came back to ask how our food was and if everything was ok. The food: -My husband ordered the Barnstorm omelette with home fries. The omelette had cut up sausage patties, onions, peppers, mushrooms, Ortega chili and cheese. The home fries had potatoes with onions and peppers. The potatoes were cooked but not crispy. There were lots of peppers and onions in the mix. He also ordered the biscuits and gravy to go with it (you get a choice of toast or biscuits and gravy) He told me the omelette was average, nothing to brag about. The biscuits and gravy were "ok", not what he likes in a biscuit and gravy (He does like a good biscuit and gravy and this unfortunately wasn't it) -I ordered the veggie omelette, hash browns and the biscuit and gravy. The omelette had tons of freshly grilled veggies in it including mushrooms, onions, zucchini, tomato and cheddar cheese. It tasted good but needed a bit more cheese and seasoning, in my opinion. Serving it with salsa could have made it more flavorful too. In hindsight I should have asked for some. The hash browns were cooked crispy and were good. The biscuit was not like a biscuit at all. It was more cake-like (without the sweetness). The gravy didn't taste homemade, wasn't very flavorful and only had a few chunks of sausage in it. All in all it was an OK experience. I have heard that their burgers are pretty good and I might try this place again on the weekend for a burger and to watch the planes come and go. However, for now I will just cross it off my Big Bear restaurant "bucket list". read more

This restaurant is right inside the tiny big bear airport terminal and it's basically a small mom and Pop restaurant with a full view of the runway. we were greeted and sat immediately. Of course, we chose one of the seats with the view of the runway The menu was huge, and there were so many mouth-watering choices! I had the banana pecan pancakes, and my husband had the Monte Cristo sandwich. We both loved our choices and there was so much food. Of course we had to take some of it home. Flew in today, so this really was a 100-dollar Hamburger trip. I thought the Blue Cheese Burger was tasty. It was home made. The highlight of the meal was my bowl of clam chowder - tasted homemade and it was good. I got a side salad instead of fries, but it was a "why bother". Soft drinks served in very small glasses, and the waiter was t on the ball with refillsZ The place is small, tucked in the small terminal building at Big Bear Airport. Very nice with good views of the field. Service was slow - probably due to being very busy during the lunch hour. Many selections in the menus - incentive to return and try more. A surprisingly large menu for a little unassuming airport restaurant inside the Big Bear Airport. I came here with a few friends on a Saturday evening and left full and happy. I ordered the garlic mushroom burger with some steak cut fries and it was on point. The patty was hand-formed and delicious, my only gripe being that I wish it was cooked a little rarer and been a tad juicier. Off the beaten path this little restaurant at the Big Bear airport certainly draws a crowd so be prepared for a wait. The menu is cute with aviation twists to all the classic diner fare. I tried the lunch option Turkey Melt on ciabatta versus the proposed croissant. It was fine: warm and the cheese was melted. While the sandwich may not have been mind-blowing the fries were a solid choice. Thick cut, well-seasoned, and just crispy enough. The service was friendly and attentive but takes time. So again be ready to wait a bit. If you're in the area and have the time is worth a stop since the setting is cutely themed and food is fine and will fill you up. read more

BEST. PANCAKES. EVER. This place is close to my heart. I few here for my first "cross county" flight from Santa Monica when I was getting my license. That time I had the bacon and egg sandwich but saw the pancakes after I ordered. The sandwich was great but those pancakes looked out of this world. I knew I'd be back and I'd try those pancakes. They serve breakfast until 3, so my husband got an egg and sausage breakfast plate with hash browns. I got a turkey club with hot potato salad, all of which was delicious. I remember coming to big bear for vacation back when the pandemic was at its peak, me and my best friend went to get away from the city and as we leaving. Our Lyft driver canceled the ride to pick us up but I wasn't aware that getting Uber/Lyft was rare in town. We head towards the airport where they were a car rental place but guess it closed down at some point. My friend was freaking out and I went to this restaurant to ask if anyone knew anybody willing to drop us off down the mountains. Murphy offered us a ride and of course we accepted whole heartedly. It meant so much to help us when we trying to end the vacation on a good note and we made sure he had a full tank of gas when we departed our ways. Thank you again bro.
