Best bar & grill in sugarloaf (and around). Love the friendly atmosphere, service and the food. I saw the cook prepping his food and he uses very fresh ingredients from local markets. I am crazy about their Nashville hot wings and chicken sandwich. Delish. The zucchini fries: generous bites and juicy. What I think makes this a four star place is that the people were so darn nice. I mean, from the moment we parked, people outside started chatting us up. Then when we entered, it felt like the entire bar, not just the workers, but the people eating and drinking all said hi. We came in on Dec 30th and on New Years Eve. Stopped for food and a lot of drinks. The food wasn't anything special but it was a lot better than we expected given the time of the day and how dark it looked from the outside. We didn't expect it to be lively but it was about a solid 20 people there. I'd say it can fit about 40 people solidly since there's a back pool area, a few bar stools and 7-8 tables with 4 chairs at each. We ordered the Nashville Hot Chicken which had a sweet and spicy vinegar which was delish. It also was topped with slaw and pickles. I wished it had more of the vinegar. And we ordered the cowboy burger which had pepper jack cheese, fried pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, jalapeños and hot sauce. With food and a couple of drinks it came out to about 70 bucks which came out really cheap. It's a bit divey the bar but most places I feel like are like that here. Theres a pool table and an electronic jukebox (where you can download the app and choose your music that you want to be played at the bar). They have only a couple of bottles of beer to select from and no drafts. But they have a decent selection of liquor. Not the brightest of lit places but you won't be squinting to see. Came in here for lunch. It feels like a local bar. It's cozy and everyone is friendly. Beer is cold. The menu contains comfort food items like burgers, chicken fingers, salads and sandwiches. The only reason this place is getting 1 star is because our waitress was very friendly and the food was pretty good. We were staying close by and wanted a nice casual dinner. We walk in and are told that they are sold out of about 6 dishes off their menu despite it being 7:30pm. I'm sorry but how is a bath sold out of buffalo wings, sampler platters on a Friday night? I didn't get the impression they had just had a big wave of customers either. Either way we decided to try the Texas loaded fries and buffalo and Swiss chicken sandwich with a side salad. Once we got our food we see that instead of the salad we ordered they gave us fries; our waitress fixed it quickly. I ordered an iced tea that tasted like tap water that had a tea bag sit in it for about 30 seconds. We also wanted a cocktail. I'm a margarita girl so that's what I looked for and was extremely disappointed when the only tequila based drink on their specialty cocktail menu was called "Border Jumper". As a Mexican-American I find that extremely insensitive and offensive; and I usually don't take things so seriously. However pair that with the fact that their electric jukebox has every single genre of music that is of people by color blocked it's hard to overlook the fact that this place clearly is of a certain mindset. Very rude. As soon as we entered the door we got yelled out for being in front of the entrance where there was no one to greet us and tell us where to go. After getting yelled out a lady said how many and said sit anywhere and we waited 15 minutes with no one to take our order. We quietly just left because just entering they were hostile. We came at 2pm and the tables around us were just waiting for their check so it wasn't busy at all. Never coming again. Too bad because we have our 20 month old and 15 year old with us and the sign on the outside says "family friendly". Very disappointed after a long 3 hour drive to get food. Super cool bar/restaurant. They have a pool table and pacman and other games. There's also a jukebox and a fireplace. Really cute place during winter to visit. It's not near the rest of Main Street shopping area so it's a hidden gem! Parking is okay. If you go during drinker hours it might be a little more packed. Waitresses and bar tender were very open with any changes and requests. The drinks are really strong so be mindful. If you're into shorts there were tvs on with different sports playing. As for the food: I had the chicken sandwich. They usually dip it in buffalo sauce but I asked for the sauce on the side and honey. If you know or follow me then sweet and savory is where it's at. Located in the super cute little neighborhood of Sugarloaf. The parking situation can be tricky when they are busy, but you can park directly across the street from them. Service is slow and there's not a ton of seating, but worth the wait. The server we had was super nice, and the food came out perfectly. The portions are a good size. The ambiance is that if a little pub, dark and cozy. It's a great place to eat after a day of sledding. I definitely enjoy the atmosphere from the busy village. It seems they don't like to answer the phones for takeout. It's not always easy to place an order to go, calls go directly to a full mailbox. Perhaps they're short staffed? Since my last review of this place I've been back several times. Most recently, we went in for dinner. The menu has changed and my favorite burger, (Black & Blue) was deleted. Bummer. The steaks were gone. Bummer. Plus, their delicious battered and scrumptious french fries have been replaced by generic ones. Bummer. Service was fine. One young lady not only ran the bar, but worked all of the tables as well, so service was sorta slow, but obviously she was quite busy. I had a patty melt, ordered it med-rare, though it came well-done, not the end of the world, but the patty was pretty small and didn't fill the bread very well at all. Drinks were lacking, which is not how I remember things here. On a previous visit, a very unkind server was extremely rude about their wines. I guess I shouldn't have tried to order wine in a beer or hard-liquor joint. Thanks for being so unkind, Savanna. I brought in 10 new customers for dinner to try out a different place. I think we will stay in our neck of the woods from now on and stay at Murray's, where food is consistent, everyone is friendly and if you want good wine, it's not a crime. I'll start by saying "Kallan's, WTH happened?" I wrote my first review after we went here a year ago because everything was delicious and the service and atmosphere was friendly. We went back yesterday after a long hike, hungry and anticipating a good meal. We had a friend with us who had never been and we were telling her how great the food was. BOY-was that a mistake! We noticed right way that the menu had changed. The mushroom burger I had gotten every time was gone. I asked our server if I could still get it and she said she didn't think I could but would check with the kitchen. She came back and said "they could do it this one time but not in the future." I kick myself for not taking a picture of my food but I was so hungry I scarfed it down. If I would've taken the time I could've shown the difference in what I used to get compared to what I got yesterday. The burger patty that was thick, juicy and hand made now looked and tasted like a frozen patty. The bun which was toasted and fluffy before was definitely a packaged one from the grocery store or Costco. The fries which were hand cut and crispy before were definitely frozen and over salted. It went from looking and tasting homemade to something similar to a fast food burger. My friend ordered a BLTA (bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado). Like me, she was so hungry she ate half before noticing the avocado was absent from her sandwich. When she called the waitress over to ask for her avocado, it was obvious that she already was aware that it was absent because she answered immediately that they couldn't put it on because their avocado wasn't ripe yet. Ummm, shouldn't she have told her and given her the option to order something else? I asked if they could discount it since she was being charged for it (avocado being the most expensive thing in that sandwich). She said she couldn't discount it and compared it to asking for "no tomato". Ummmm, when you ask for things to be omitted, it's by choice. This wasn't her choice. My other friend ordered a side salad with her tacos. The tacos were fine but the salad was mostly olives and onions. When the server returned with the bill she informed us that she was able to take 10% off (wow, would she have done that if we hadn't said anything?). From other reviews, I want to return for the Texas fries. After our meal we enjoyed a game of pool. Went for a late lunch/early dinner so it was not crowded. The drinks were strong but tasty and the burgers were delicious. We tried The Triple Bypass burger and it truly lived up to the name and was everything we wanted from a dive bar burger. We also tried the Burger From Hell which was a lot spicier than we were expecting but burned so good. Fries were pretty bland though. Unfortunately, service was very very slow and we felt bad as there was only 1 person working the kitchen and 1 lady waitressing and bartending. We actually ended up asking for the food to-go after we saw how long even the drinks were taking and even then pretty much went up and tried to grab it ourselves because it had been sitting there for a while before our waitress noticed. The vibes were also hit or miss over the course of when we were there. Halfway through a group of shrill underage girls sat at the bar next to us, started knocking back vodka redbulls and proceeded to very loudly boast about how they couldn't wait until they turned 18 so they could drive. I'm not sure if it was because of the way I looked or if I just looked like someone else but I was immediately told I was 86'd by my waitress as soon as I sat down with my son to eat. She was so proud to embarrass me and have this sarcastic smile to tell me I was 86'd and couldn't be there. When she saw the confused look on my face and realized she must have mistaken me for someone else, her tail tucked between her legs but that didn't help the fact that she already publicly embarrassed me in front of everyone. I walked out, I couldn't enjoy a night after that. Used to be my friend and I's favorite dive bar/local bar in Big Bear. We used to frequent this bar dozens of times before. However, the last THREE times we've tried to bring our out of town friends here on a Saturday this year (in March, April, and now July) after 11pm they've been closed. Despite their hours saying they're open till 1am on Saturdays on every single platform. Today was no exception. We showed up a lil after 11pm and the sign said "open" and the door was unlocked. We got excited! Proceeded to open the door to find out all the stools were put up and they were wiping down the counter so we immediately walked back to the car. Mind you, we ran into a male employee in the parking lot who saw us pulling up and getting out out of the car (there's literally no other open business in this area, so only one reason for us to be parking) and instead of telling us they were closed just kept staring and walking in and out of the bar/restaurant. Needless to say I was hoping third time was the charm but officially writing Kallans off. We all understand that employees wanna go home early on the weekends, but this has become such a frequent thing that they need to just update their hours and send their employees home early officially. read more

We came in for an early lunch at around 1130 on a Saturday. There were about 5 other tables with one server darting back and forth and keeping everyone's drinks full. Beers are about 6 bucks on average (Lagunitas was 6.25 805 was 5.50). We ordered 2 burgers from hell. My wife went with chicken and I got the beef. They asked how I wanted it cooked and I said medium, but it was definitely well. No big because the char on the outside of the burger was so good. I'd probably opt for chicken next time though because the beef was just alright. This burger was spicy! I know it says hot sauce and jalapeno, but whew! We promised ourselves one beer, but we had to add an 805 to help wash it all down. We also ordered some spicy garlic wings. We asked for boneless, but got bones, whatever. They were still good. I went to Kallans Bar and Grill Saturday night and it's been the worst experience due to the workers being rude. We came in and the woman with black hair kicked us out saying there was no space when there was clearly lots of tables that were empty. On top of that there was no place to wait at so we had to wait in the cold. Once we finally got our table, we felt very unwelcome. The server threw the menus at our table and left. The server was a scrawny girl with short highlighted blondish hair with a black hat. We were given wet tables and wet chairs (smelled and looked like beer). We didn't want to upset the waitress even more (since she seemed to be in a bad mood from the start) so we just cleaned it up ourselves with the very little napkins available. Waitress was just sitting around and took about 20 minutes to take our order. It was a party of 9 people, but we all decided to just order 1 plate due to the service (we all decided to just snack on stuff from the liquor next door). Waitress came to our table, stared at us mad and said "what do you want" in a snappy tone. Food took an understanding amount to be ready (25ish minutes). The food was alright. Can't complain. Heard other people complaining about the waitress I even heard one lady say "She's such a Fu**en B*tch." Maybe the waitress was having a bad day, maybe she was tired, so my party tried their best to be nice to her. Still, due to her service we ordered 1 plate instead of 9.
