For dinner one night when my parents and I came to Oak Harbor to visit my grandma in early October 2022, we chose The BBQ Joint for the supplier of the protein of the meal. My grandma, dad, and I all went to the store to pick up the ribs after ordering them in advance. In addition to the rack of ribs, we got a container of the their BBQ sauce. The workers were friendly and it was simple and clear how to pick up the order. The interior decor matched the restaurant cuisine. Back at the house we kept the ribs warm in the oven until dinner time and they were finger-linking good when we sat down and ate. The meat was tender and not too fatty and the BBQ sauce flavorful. Fun family dinner experience.

One of the best things to do after you have an amazing time with your family is the sit down and enjoy some great food with the ones you love, and if you're in the mood for ribs, this is a great place to get them three different kinds of styles St. Louis, Texas and the third one I'm not quite sure but anyways the point is this place is amazing. It's so succulent in tender that it falls off of the phone and it's family owned.

Once again, I was STARVING, and felt like having some barbecue. I popped into the BBQ Joint for a two meat plate. I decided on Brisket and Spicy Sausage, with a double side of Jambalaya (never been a fan of macaroni or potato salad). For the meats, the spicy sausage was great, albeit greasy, and the brisket was okay. I came in early, so the brisket was still semi-moist, but I also received a thick part of the fat cap. The brisket lacked the smoke flavor that I crave when I have barbecue, specifically mesquite. When I have good brisket, I do expect a nice smoke ring, a great crust, and a moist center. For the sides, the jambalaya was good, but needed salt. It had a great tomato flavor, but the rice was quite overdone. I also ordered a cornbread, but it resembled more of a cake, than a bread, and it was rather tasteless. For price, I feel it was quite overpriced. The brisket added $2.00 to the total, but I only received one slice. I did have a great amount of sausage, and a decent sized side of jambalaya. The cornbread costed extra, at $1.29. The total, without tip, was $19.91. For a single person, I did feel it was pricey.

Why does this place have to be in oak harbor??? I need one by my house. I was on whidbey island visiting my grandma and craving bbq. I looked up a few places and decided to go with this one. I am so happy this is the one I chose. Normally I don't like macaroni from bbq places or most places honestly, because they're always either too dry and not creamy and bland or they're creamy but it's like velveeta and still bland or salty, idk exactly how to describe what I'm saying but it's always just such a let down. The macaroni here was some of the best macaroni I've ever had in my entire life. I'm just bummed that my sides were small cause I could've eaten a pound of it and I'm actually avoiding noodles right now but it looked so good I had to try it and I'm glad that I did. The pricing was also really great. I wasn't that pleased with the cornbread. It was a bit too dry for me. They have decent portions of meat! The portions for the sauce were a bit of a let down too, so if you like a good amount of sauce I suggest asking for extra and I suggest asking for bigger sides if you want more than the size in my photo (probably 4 ounces, the sauce cups are about 2.5 ounces) overall, the flavors and prices were all worth it and I highly recommend this place. There's a bbq place near by this one and it doesn't even compare to how good this one is, despite the good reviews of the other place

Easy parking in a strip mall. Booths & small & large tables accommodate a large family or small group. I brought my family here after a long walk around Fort Casey. This place is family friendly had helpful staff. Everyone liked the pulled pork sandwiches. The sides we tried were homemade honey cornbread, potato salad & baked beans. Everyone agrees that we would come back here again.

First, let me say I am from Memphis, TN and I love barbecue!! I stumbled upon this little gem one day after attending church. I was pretty hungry and decided to test this place out. I am very happy I did. Although, I have not had any barbecue that has even come close to Memphis barbecue, this barbecue is decent especially being in Oak Harbor. This establishment is very clean which is always an A+ in my book. The staff is very friendly, helpful, and patient. I will be back for another visit soon. read more

I would give 2.5 stars... but rounding up since there isn't much else in Oak Harbor. We got the brisket sandwich and the pulled pork sandwich. Both were fine but nothing to write home about. They could do a little more with the sides - the beans tasted like they came out of a can. Cole slaw was fine but not particularly flavorful. The sandwiches could have been improved by toasting/warming the buns. read more

Definitely the best BBQ place around, but that's likely because it's the ONLY BBQ place around. I grew up in south Austin, Texas, near places like The Salt Lick, Stubb's, and Ruby's (not Rudy's), so i know real good Texas BBQ. The BBQ Joint is definitely not on the same scale as those places, and is in fact rather mediocre. The brisket was alright, but not nearly as good and juicy as I'd like. I have to agree with a previous reviewer, the pulled pork was fairly bland as well. Generally, mediocre BBQ can be fixed by some good sauce, but I was also rather disappointed with their sauces. Their desserts were real good, though. Just don't ask the owner about how he makes the banana pudding...you'll head straight for the treadmill to run it off! All in all, I couldn't put my finger on exactly why I was disappointed with the food here, but I do know that it just wasn't as good as back home. read more

I don't understand the hype behind this place. It's mediocre at best. I've gone there at least 6 times and have never left thinking, "that was some great BBQ!" it's also rather pricey for the quality. I know BBQ is never really cheap because of the work that goes into it but the food does not warrant the price. I guess the best item on the menu is the chicken, I mean it's pretty hard to ruin chicken. Unless you are absolutely DYING for BBQ then I suggest you pass this joint up. read more

Service is always great! Super friendly! Sweet tea is absolutely to die for (even for a Southerner)! The spicy sausage has great favor without being TOO spicy. Only place I know around here to get this quality of barbecue. The plates are as good as anywhere. But while this caliber of barbecue might be on par with world-renown barbecue (Memphis, Texas, the Carolinas), be prepared to pay an out of town price for that quality. read more

We are originally from Texas and have had our fair share of excellent BBQ, and so I can say with some level of experience that this was better than average BBQ. The meat was moist and tasty. The sauce was a little too sweet for our taste, and be forewarned that the sweet tea is so sweet it'll make your teeth hurt. But overall it was a nice experience. read more

We just moved here a few months ago and I as craving some BBQ and decided to check out this place. I was very unhappy with how overpriced 2 dinners were $30+!!! And the BBQ and the sides weren't even worth it. The ribs were dry like they had been out all day, the only thing that was eaten out of the entire meal was the sausage. To be fair, I used to live in Texas and had some terrific BBQ there. This was pretty good stuff for Washington though. I ordered a two meat platter with sausage and pulled pork. Baked beans, coleslaw and corn bread on the side. The sausage was fantastic. Out of this world! The pulled pork...was OK. It was more chopped than pulled, so it seemed like it had an almost mushy consistency. Nice flavour, just the wrong consistency. The corn bread was nice, but the baked beans and coleslaw were average. read more

Excellent BBQ! My wife and I had the Briscuit and my daughter had the Sausages. Everything was great including the baked beans and coleslaw. We came in towards the end of closing and they welcomed us in as if they were just opening up! Fantastic service and great BBQ! Bbq pit is great for bbq. They have there bbq down pat. My issues with them are there bbq sauce is one of the worst I have ever had and I love bbq sauce! Also close a little to early as well. They have a wonderful mustard sauce for the sausage. But there macaroni and potato salad are horribly bland. read more

The BBQ Joint specializes in genuine Hickory Smoked Southern BBQ and warm Southern hospitality. We make all our Rubs and Sauces in house. Our Texas Beef Brisket and Carolina Pulled Pork are smoked over low heat for 15 hours. People tell us every day that our Memphis Ribs are the best they ever had. The Smoked Chicken is juicy and tender. Mild Kielbasa and Spicy Andouille Sausage are a customer favorite. Most of our menu is Gluten-Free. Our side dishes are made from family recipes by us. Meet the Business Owner: Sonna and Tim R.

Texans Tim and Sonna Ryan retired from AT&T in 2000. Tim loved to barbeque and Sonna loved to bake. Their passion for cooking led to opening The BBQ Joint in Oak Harbor, Wa in July, 2006. Falling in love with Whidbey Island, Oak Harbor with NAS Whidbey seemed like the place to bring the best of BBQ Country to the Pacific Northwest. Using the best ingredients, everything is made from scratch with tender loving care. Hickory wood used in Southern Pride smokers give the Texas Beef Brisket, Sweet Memphis Ribs, Carolina Pulled Pork, Chicken and Sausage the true taste of the South. Fantastic, expansive dining room- this dine in restaurant has extravagant decor and a lovely wall of bourbon and whiskey to entice you! The menu has family style entrees to share- and yes, you can make up to 2 substitutions. With my pesky food allergy, I ordered the shrimp with mixed vegetables plate and the boys went with the family style for 2. I also enjoyed a cocktail from the bar- a raspberry lemon drop martini, very delish. I had crab and cheese wontons for an appetizer- shared with my son. Lumpia as another appetizer shared across the table was also perfection in every bite. John and Eddie had egg rolls, bbq pork as appetizers for their family style. As well as won ton soup that was loaded with veggies! I had a bit of the soup too- delicious broth! I should note- food was coming out so fast- we had ordered the two appetizers first and they were out before we ordered our meals! The courses started coming and coming! Next up for the men- a huge dish of fried rice and sweet and sour pork & chicken and cashews. I benefited with some fried rice too. Needless to say, it was a ton of food and we had leftovers- which came in handy the following day when we crashed early! We even ordered won ton again to go on another night that we turned in early! OH! Almost forgot- the fortune cookies are the best I have ever had, obviously made in house!

I thought that things are better than last time with freshness, and quality on things like the sushi, salad bar, and other specialties it seemed. They kept things pretty well refilled and by they I mostly mean one very hard working older lady that also has to deal with peoples children's spills! But honestly it's funny to watch the kids have so much fun after church at a buffet. One 6 year old girl who's big brother in a suit and tie reach for plates full of just hard boil egg halves from the salad bar!! They were elated! So there is entertainment here too! It's still just a basic Chinese buffet but I think that most people can find their few go to items and really go to town and feel they got their moneys worth.

Food is on par with most buffets, ambiance and service are above average. Good for a quick meal.read more

SUPER disappointed in the attention to detail and quality.

My husband got the one that has an onion ring (kinda like a western burger, forgot the name) and I got the inferno. I'll start by saying the fries were perfectly cooked and I thought they had a good flavor to them. The burger was also good. I asked for the inferno sauce on the side, cause the burger already has jalapeño on it, and boy am I glad I did. The sauce was too hot for my liking. No biggie just kept it off, it tasted great without it and wasn't dry or anything. I will definitely go back another time.

It was quiet inside, probably because other than me there were only two customers. I decided to sit at the bar and order my food from the bartender. After looking at the menu I decided to order the Ring of Fire pizza. I enjoy spicy food and was prepared to be disappointed at the spice level even though the ingredients are pepperoni, sausage, jalapeno, and habanero! I am very pleased to say that not only was I NOT disappointed at the spice level, but the pizza was nicely cooked and tasted great! The day after we ate here, we went out and bought a Traeger smoker. The prices at this place are INSANE. Two tiny portions of meat with two tiny sides for $18 is mind boggling. We bought an entire rack of ribs for less than this meal. I understand the convenience and draw of BBQ joints but the prices at this place for the serving sizes you get has us now solely smoking our own meats. The service was good, the woman working there was friendly and personable. The ambience could use some work but the restaurant was clean so can't really ask for much more than that. read more

Ever been to the south and had real BBQ down there and then asked where you could find something like that up here? I have, and it's right here! This place knows how to do BBQ, if you try the brisket or chicken especially and look me in the eye to say you don't like it, I no longer trust your opinion when it comes to food. We ordered the brisket plate that comes with two sides. Brisket tested delicious! They have free WiFi. Using this WiFi to write the review. When we came in, the whole team from from the local military base were dining here. Outstanding friendly service. This place really stands out and absolutely deserves to be recommended. read more
