I still love this place but our last visit was pretty disappointing. We had reservations and were handed a pager. When the pager went off, we went up and handed it to the hostess. She took it and then started in on a lengthy conversation with someone else, that had just put their name in for a table. We were just standing there..forced to listen in on a conversation that we had nothing to do with. Our waitress seemed..distracted. The ciabatta stack pesto could ward off a vampire. Dont' get me wrong, it's really good..it just contains huge chunks of raw garlic. The Tunisian pizza was delicious. The glazed yellow fin ahi was fresh, but it was drowned out by the amount of stuff piled on, over, and around it. No more tiki mugs. They don't serve the cocktails in them, they don't sell them..they just don't have them at all. Thank goodness for Don's the Beachcomber up the road, who still sticks to their beautiful tiki roots. read more

You must have heard the saying "the better the view the worse the food". Well, that is definitely not true in the case of The Beachcomber restaurant at Crystal Cove! The outdoor dining is just steps to the sand and, in essence, just a few more steps to the ocean. Our party of four thoroughly enjoyed our Saturday evening dining experience. Two of us ordered the Chilean Sea Bass special and, honestly, it may have been the best I ever ate. They do take reservations but we're totally booked days in advance. The good news was they keep about half of their tables for walk-up's. We waited about 75 minutes but enjoyed some beverages at the bar and enjoyed the view from there. The time passed quickly. Give it a try, I think you will enjoy the Beachcomber. read more

On a hot summer afternoon, we decided to escape the heat and go for a walk along the coast. We went to Crystal Cove and ended up at the Beachcomber. On a Sunday, we waited an hour for a patio table (we could have had immediate seating inside). We half expected this to be the typical beach side tourist trap, high price and mediocre food. We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food. We had the braised short rib and the roasted chicken as entree and the tomato blue cheese soup. The short rib was tender and accompanied by 4 mushroom and blue cheese ravioli and sauteed mushroom medley. The chicken was accompanied by a heaping side of mac & cheese which our son enjoyed. The soup came with a pie crust (very flaky) and the soup was very delish even though it sounded a bit peculiar. We found the service good. They were busy so the wait staff was running around a bit but we were satisfied w/ our service. This is an interesting place worthy of a try. You are literally a few yards away from the crashing waves. I will say the busy weekend beach crowd detracts a little from the ambiance. Oh yeah, expect to pay up for the setting. read more

What an extremely beautiful location. So first off if you have not been here come. Make a reservation. Could save you waiting an hour. The view makes it worth it. But the food, is average. For what their pricing is, it should be better. I can get a really nice breakfast at Flapjacks or Waffle House. And as many people they had working there, the service was really slow. As I mentioned the pricing, to me is a bit expensive. I found $41 for 2 breakfasts a bit much. That does not include the $6 tip. So nearly $50. I think you are mostly paying for the view. Now the food is good. I thought my combination of chicken friend steak and eggs with an arugula salad was unusual. And truly the arugula salad did not belong on that plate. The chicken friend steak was too thin and crunchy. Eggs were perfect. For $16.95 it just was not worth. Left more than half behind. Now fiance had their Brioche French Toast. I had a little bit of that and it was good. Nice flavors although my fiance did not like the candied pecans. But she's an RD and go figure. I loved them. Definitely something we should have shared. Brunch on the beach?! YES, please!! When you think of getting some grub on the beach, you typically think of a patio view of the beach from afar, but at the Beachcomber you are literally on the beach. You walk about 3 feet from the pavement and you are walking on the sand and the water is a few more feet away. There is nothing blocking your view from the sand and water! During the winter holiday there is even a Christmas Tree right out in the sand in front of the restaurant. I came here on Christmas Eve and we had to wait about 40 minutes for a table of 3, which wasn't too bad with the view and all. They do take reservations though! We started off with some Beignets, which were good, but they were a little too airy without enough dough for me. I split the Coconut Macadamia Pancakes and the Steak Chilaquiles. The pancakes were good! There were actual large pieces of macadamia nuts baked inside! It was a good mix of coconut and macadamia nuts. And the pancakes were huge!! But oh man.. the chilaquiles.. were delicious! The tortilla was perfect and not too soggy. The flavor of everything was just perfect! So yummy!! Parking is sort of inconvenient, but they have a shuttle service for $1 and if you don't mind walking, it's not too bad! read more

We absolutely loved this place. We were traveling and had limited time. We wanted to have a good meal at the beach. This was it! We didn't have reservations. Showed up early around 4:30. They were just finishing up the lunch crowd and switching for dinner. Told there would be an hour to 1 1/2 hr wait. We agreed to wait and have a drink and appetizer at the bar. We had a coconut Mojito and Pimms along with calamari. Those were amazing cocktails! I don't think we were sitting for more than 1/2 hr and our table was ready. We were seated at table on the beach walkway vs on the deck. What a pleasant surprise! Our server was celebrating her birthday. We wished her happy birthday and she said she would comp us a brownie Sunday in honor of her celebration. Sweet! I had the short ribs with walnut Gorgonzola ravioli and because I couldn't decide between that and the shrimp and scallop dish, added two scallops per the servers suggestion. My husband had the shrimp pasta and son had the ahi tacos. We were very pleased! We enjoyed our brownie sundae and ordered the beignets too. Oh heck! Those were amazing. Sinful. After dinner we sat on the beach while our teen stayed in the water for what seemed like two hours. The sunset added to our amazing experience. The service, food, and atmosphere here are terrific. My friend and I hiked Crystal Cove yesterday and really enjoyed eating dinner at this restaurant after. The only strange issue was, the artichoke appetizer we ordered was terrible; and we both love artichokes! I'm not sure what went wrong but they were completely inedible, inside and out. They were too woody and fibrous to even chew (even the typically more tender insides), let alone digest that we had to inform the waitress. We felt bad because we're not picky eaters and never, ever complain about food, but the waitress was so lovely and comped the artichokes and allowed us to order the brussel sprouts side as an appetizer instead which was wonderful. We both got delicious tropical drinks, and the butternut squash pasta dish as our mains, mine with the kobe meatballs; I highly recommend! We then finished off with a delicious lemon mousse cake which was heavenly. I'm not sure what was up with the artichoke appetizer; I read other reviews and everyone else seems to love it so either we got a badly cooked one or my friend and I just don't get it. In any case, everything else was wonderful and I really appreciated the restaurant replacing the artichokes with something more enjoyable for us. We will definitely be back! read more

The food is terrible.... beignets are not really beignets, I've been to New Orleans. Pesto sauce pasta is so oily and soggy, the sauce should've been blended more smoothly. Fried calamari is soft and soggy when it should be light and crispy. The only thing I enjoyed was the Bloody Mary with all the trimmings. read more

I'm not sure if I'll be coming back here again. You're definitely coming here (and paying) for the beachfront view. That's it. The food served on the dinner menu is mediocre for the price you're paying. They gave us a 2.5 hour wait time, which worked initially for us since my family had been planning to spend a few hours in the water and lounging at the beach. We waited close to 3 hours. I think depending on the time of day you're coming, add on an extra 30 mins to an hour to the initial wait time they give you. If you're lucky enough to be seated early, count your lucky stars. As mentioned previously, food was just okay. I went in with high expectations since it was heavily praised by some friends who'd been here before and the numerous 4-5 star review on Yelp. It was meh, just meh. Many of the dishes we ordered tasted under-seasoned. The one exception was the beignet--that was delicious, very light and fluffy and not oily at all. If I do come back, it's to get another taste of that. Their drinks were also fine, decently strong. Maybe I'll come back for another Moscow and beignet. The server we got was kind, really catered to us. Checked on our food when we asked and came back with updates despite being busy. I really wish I remembered his name, since he provided excellent service and we were very happy. They also validate parking, so hold onto your ticket. By the way, the walk down through nature to the beach/restaurant is lovely. I highly recommend skipping the bus if you're up for a nice walk through the lush greenery. read more

OK, but not great. But it had some pluses. Sunday, arrived at 9:30 for breakfast. We knew we would have to wait. We were summoned about an hour later. The day was perfect, some residual clouds, but the sun came through. So did the seals doing the backstroke nearby. Cute. Good service. Thank You Priscilla. Not really fond of the ice water, had an aftertaste. With a classy place like this, you think they could maybe filter the water? Or should I be buying the bottled stuff. Not a very interesting breakfast menu. I've seen better. With such a beautiful location, you would think they could do a better menu. Maybe they are afraid of too much success? I ordered the Crab Benedict ($15). The hollandaise was tasty, the crab cakes had too much bell pepper for my taste, and it was obviously canned crab. Breakfast potatoes, coulda/shoulda passed on that. Mr. B had the corned beef hash. Unremarkable. Don't remember the price, but it was in the teens too. Wandered around the little office area afterwards where you can arrange to stay in one of the quaint 1920's bungalows for the low low price of $190 a night. Ptoooeey, it's old and not particularly with modern amenities. But the old pictures and guy telling us about the history of Crystal Cove was interesting. Hopped on the shuttle, $1 per person, to get back to our parking on the other side of the highway. At least we did not have to pay for parking (but make sure bring your voucher from the restaurant). My bf and I went hiking with a couple of his coworkers and afterwards we split off to do some exploring on our own. We stumbled upon this cute little town with tiny vacation homes and this restaurant called the Beachcomber. I wanted to get breakfast but by the time we were seated, it was lunch time and they stopped serving breakfast. Keep that in mind when they let you know how long the wait is. We were waiting quite a while and had to keep checking up on them. Stunning views, exceptional food, great services. Taking my friend who's from out of States, I had a great time here to see a beautiful sunset, to sip glasses of wine, and to catch the latest, and to eat dinner. However, I got little difficulties to find out where it is. It's too complicated to get there. First, we should park the car opposite sides of this restaurant and walking down the tunnel and short paths, sandy beach, grew more curiosity, and the visitors center, and finally the Bootleg Bar and vinyl covered patio, and an entrance of this restaurant where the concierge waiting outside for us to be seated. It was windy and the low sky, no one expected the beautiful sunset. Just the sea waves roaring even though it was June in Orange County when tourists would be poured in, enjoying beaches and sands, surfers surfing high waves, but only few people waiting outside, covering their heads with hoodies. However, the sun finally set between the thick cloud with orange color, the old man taking shots while he was eating as if it's his last shot in his life, the sunset was as if the peacock alway shows his beautiful feathers to obey the Creator's Rules. It was stunning. I felt like I got filming 'The Piano' on a New Zealand beach. Very cold but it was beautiful. When the food we ordered coming out, I was surprised again. Amazingly delicious Crab Stack and Lamb Chop. I never expected the food is delicious as I had dinner at the tourists attractions. But this one was exceptional, very fresh and yummy. Fantastic Breakfast/Lunch place in the middle of Crystal Cove State Park. We popped into the parking area on the East side of the PCH. As it was a holiday (July 4th) there was a flat $20 parking rate. We took the shuttle ($1.50/person) down to the Crystal Cove Historic Area. What an amazing step back in time! This quaint little beach rental community is where the Beachcomber is located. We arrived just after 8am and were able to snag a table inside, as opposed to waiting 10-30 minutes for an outside table. Courtney, our waitress, was pleasant, and provided great recommendations on what to order. We started with the Beignets and a special July 4th Cocktail. My wife ordered the Avacado toast and I ordered the Crystal Cove Omelette. Our food came out timely and we began to enjoy our delicious meals. Came here on the recommendation of a local, and sort of expected this location to be more about the ambiance than the food. This place had it all! Can't wait to go back and try the Skillet, Frittata, or the other omelette. They validated parking so our $20 parking was waived. Definitely worth checking out if you are in the area!!! read more

Took my mom to grab a few apps before leaving the Beach. Started with the New England Clam Chowder and it was one of the best I've had! Fresh and clams weren't very chewy. Then had the Macaroni and cheese.We loved it! Perfect for two people. Then we had the Thai steak skewers and they were amazing. The peanut sauce that came with was really good. Before lounging at Crystal Cove Beach, my girlfriend and I stopped by here on a Thursday afternoon for some lunch. The restaurant is beachfront and the parking is across PCH - you can either take a 5-10 min walk through a tunnel or along a trail to the restaurant, or pay $1.50 to take the shuttle. Our wait time was said to be 20-30 mins but as soon as we walked away from the hostess, our buzzer went off and we got a table on the patio with a great view of the beach! To start, we ordered the grilled artichoke. It was cooked perfectly and seasoned well. The sauce it came with was AMAZING! I could have eaten just that with a spoon. As for my main dish, I felt like ordering something I don't usually get so I ordered the Lobster Club with no bacon and I am so glad I did. The lobster salad was seasoned very well and was sandwiched between two buttery, crispy, pieces of bread. It came with a side of fries which were pretty good. Along with the good food, our waiter Oscar was fantastic. He was so up-beat and friendly and remained that way even after going back and forth to bring us all the things we had asked for. The only reason I am not giving this place five stars is because of the artichokes. I was really enjoying my half until I got to the last few leaves. The last few bites of it tasted like lighter fluid. I took the third artichoke half home and when I was eating it later that evening, it tasted HEAVILY like lighter fluid. I'm so disappointed with the customer service of this establishment! The food was good, but for the price you pay, you expect more from the staff. The hostess were rude and less than happy to accommodate and have no joy. An incident occurred where I spoke to the manager and he was less than helpful. He acted like he was doing me a favor by seating me, after I waited over 90 minutes. Mind you, he then seated us in the worst location possible, right next to the COVID cleaning supplies, when there was several better seats available. The service from our waiter was crappy at best. Unless there is a service overhaul I would never return here! Please consider this when choosing a dining spot. You are better off bringing your own lunch! read more

This is our third time going to The Beachcomber. The food is always delicious and we look forward to it whenever we visit Cali, which is usually 1-2x a year. We always get the short rib and carbonara for our entrees, but will switch up our drinks, appetizers, and dessert. Everything we've tried had been incredible. We highly recommend the crab stack for an appetizer and the beignets for dessert. The ambiance and service is also always a 10/10. I am giving 4 stars because tonight when we went, the short rib came with a different style ravioli. It has always come with a Gorgonzola walnut filling but tonight it was a butternut squash. This would be okay, however the menu still stated that it would be the original Gorgonzola walnut filling, and I will say the butternut squash did not pair nearly as well with the creamy red wine sauce. I mentioned it to the waitress, which she was extremely kind and mentioned it was a seasonal change/special, but I think if this were the case it should be mentioned to the customer, as it's a $40 meal. There is a parking across the street and you can take the tunnel directly from the parking to the beach where restaurant is, if you show the receipt to the attendant when leaving the lot, parking is t no charge for the restaurant patrons.
