Overall this place should have prices more like Denny's for the quality of their food and atmosphere. Do not be fooled by the meat on display. This is NOT a steakhouse. This place has Chicago Steakhouse prices but serves food that you would expect to eat at Denny's. I think this place is WAY over-rated. The prices are far higher than the going rate at similar restaurants. I honestly don't see how it stays so busy. We live in Champaign so have other options that are better and closer....maybe this area of Indiana has nothing else? The rolls had good flavor but were doughy in the middle. I asked the waitress if we could get different ones and she said "that's how they usually make them." Really? Cuz I don't enjoy eating raw dough. I was also very under-whelmed by the salad bar. For such a large building and so many tables I expected a good sized spread of choices. Just the standard salad fare and not even all that you might usually see. The plates are tiny, too. I gather they are hoping you don't go bother to go back for seconds. I am seriously baffled by the hype about this place. WOW!! I'm so impressed!! I had never ate here and was totally shocked on how great the food is here!! We were on our way home for Illinois on Memorial day and stopped in to have a meal. To begin, the place looks like an old steak house, but not sure if it was or not. Anyway, do be alarmed. We walked in and was seated right away. The waitress was awesome, the rolls to die for and the salad bar was good, although I would have loved to have seen some eggs. As we were waiting on our food, the place got really busy! People waiting in line. We ordered the 6oz steak with baked potato and Liver and onions with mashed potato's and gravy. My steak was great! Maybe a little to well, as I ordered the steak Medium. But it was so tender, I couldn't have sent it back. No way. Baked potato was good. The Liver and onions tasted good, but kinda dry.Got about a cup of onions!! I have been coming here since I was a young girl. It was a big deal to get dressed up and go to the Beef House. Steaks...rolls.....salad bar.... Sadly I have watched it lose it's luster through the years. My husband and I stopped there tonight to celebrate our anniversary. Sadly... Steak was horrible. I ordered M ..came out MW ...way over cooked. I sent it back. 8oz Ribeye. Came back out cooked a little better .... .. However it was so thin you could just about see thru it. The steak did not have any flavor at all. It almost tasted like it had been cooked in water. With enough steak sauce you might give it so flavor. Hubs had the early bird fish special. His report "wow....not good" .. No one brought my steak back from management or kitchen. Service I tipped well as none of this was his fault. Salad bar was still good... For the old timers here... Salad plates were in the chiller but only for storage...not cold. ..bummer.....yeast rolls good...soup not really hot. Sadly. Every time I roll through Indiana I have to stop in at the Beef House. We will make time to go there along our trips because it has become a tradition. The steaks are massive and the flavor is delectable. Nothing beats their bread rolls. I always end up ordering more bread to take back with me. My husband and I were passing through IN. Haven't eaten the whole day and glad that I remembered the Beef House from 2001 when I first came here. Their rolls, ribeye & salad bar are the bomb! there's just something about good ol' fashion beef that's cooked Southern style. Our waitress was very friendly. Service was friendly & food came promptly. Salad & rolls (eat-all-you-can) filled me up before the beef came & oh even the soup was included in the price. We ordered a 10 oz ribeye and with drinks our meal came to $50 (with taxes) for both. Our waitress even gave us a box of rolls to go when we asked for more. Dinner for two was great. A HUGE meal! They kept bringing out more delicious warm rolls, warm apple butter, fantastic steaks, and then surprised us with sweet corn on the cob. Plus, the salad bar is great and the sides were awesome. It's quit a drive from civilization, so make the most of your trip. Am I missing something?! I have visited Beef House twice (admittedly both times at lunch) and have not been impressed either time. The rolls are tasty and delicious with the strawberry jam, but as noted by other reviewers they are a little doughy in the middle. The salad bar is sub-par and at $9 is way over-priced for an 8" plate. There are no tomatoes, no eggs, no vegetable variety... it's basically iceberg lettuce, onions, shredded carrots, croutons, and some mayonnaise-based salads. The Beef House is a great place to eat. That being said, it is a mixed bag. I grew up in the area and this place had a well earned reputation. The crowd typically runs to older folks (I'm one of them). The decor is dated and that's a plus for some, a minus for others. I had a rib eye steak last night. Not a bad steak but when Beef is in the restaurants name I expect a little more. Lots of great entrees, salad bar and rolls are very good. Had a good server. I'll be back. If you are a first timer don't built up your expectations unrealistically and you'll be fine. read more

This is a good steak restaurant, but, is not the best in Indiana (as they advertise). Got there at 8 PM on a Saturday night and was seated immediately. Looked like a war zone with empty tables needing to be bussed. The wooden chairs are uncomfortable because the force you to lean backwards. Turns out the wait staff gets to eat their dinner at the same time because they were at the table next us with no extra charge for the gossiping. I had the ribeye steak which was good. The salad bar was basic, but, good quality. The tap water tasted badly. Our waitress did a good job even while eating her own dinner (they are open until 10 PM). read more

I have heard about this restaurant for years, and I couldn't wait to eat here. I wish I had been in the right mind to take a picture of my food. Since I was on the way back from my father's funeral, I wasn't in the mood to complain. After seeing other reviews on this site, I realize I should have absolutely complained. I ordered the $22 ribeye, and when it came it was thin, burnt, flavorless, and about the size of my palm. It was smaller than the kid's ribeye. My husband ordered the chicken, and it must have come off of a Cornish hen. He ordered dark meat, and he said he had had more meat off of wings. The salad bar was about 1/3 of the size of my local grocery store. I sincerely couldn't be any less impressed. read more

Been to the Beef House many times in the past....the last few years it's starting to not be so good..the prices don't match the quality of the food...We got the broccoli cheese soup and I took one look at it and knew it was not the norm....I can't believe they served it...it was more like a thick gravy rather than the creamy soup we have been used to...we told the waitress and she said the same thing we did...the steaks just aren't worth the money....the rolls are the only thing worth writing about it....you can buy them frozen to tAke home...the salad bar choices are shrinking...para salad...bean salad etc...not even cottage cheese...We are going to find a,different steak house read more

Having dined there several time is the past five years, I was anxious to take my son there when we passed through Covington on a recent business trip. I really played the place up. And I was sadly disappointed. First, the young person serving us, although a very nice young gentleman, was terrible at service. He brought rolls out, but we have to ask repeatedly for the apple butter and the jam. We also had to ask repeatedly for water. Our steaks great for size and presentation, but were overcooked. I never did receive my mushrooms. I will probably be there again, as one bad experience does not negate several good ones. **Must Read** I have wanted to eat at the Beef House for years and I finally had the chance to make it there. This was the biggest disappointment that I have ever had in dining experience. The facility is old and outdated and that was really the best part of the experience. The prices are extremely over priced for what you get. What you get is the blandest piece of meat I have ever eaten. SPOILER ALLERT - My $40 -20oz Ribeye comes out with a hair extruding from the cut of meat. Of course the waitress asked if I wanted another steak. Well what do you think I'm going to do, use the hair to floss after I'm done eating that hairy steak (is what I wanted to say)...? So after a lengthy wait out comes this new $40 -20oz Ribeye hairless this time. So I cut it open to find it cooked to a wonderful RAW doneness. Now keep in mind I did order it Med Rare and really don't mind if it was more Rare than Medium, but it was crawling off the plate. Charbroiled on the outside, Raw on the inside... But here is where things went downhill even more. The server bring the manager over to the table asking what was wrong and if I wanted the steak re-fired to the correct doneness. We kindly say no that isn't necessary that with the length of time that we would be just leaving. He offered 2 options for me. 1 - Have it re-fired to get it cook correctly or 2 leave the steak and I won't be charged for it. Our reply was we will pay for the steak but there should be some kind of condensation for the hair in the steak and the second one not being cook properly. His reply was if you take the stake you have to pay for it or you can leave it and not pay for it. This is by far the worst manager I have ever encountered. There is more to the disappointment of this experience but it really is too long to list. My advice to you is to look at reviews on Yelp before you think about going to the Beef House. Sorry for any misspellings and bad punctuation but I'm typing pissed. read more

So this place is out in "the middle of nowhere." It's about 45 min from my folks' place so we don't go there often. If you're passing through, you should definitely make the stop. Their steak dinners include soup, salad bar, vegetable, rolls, and a drink. The steaks are pretty good. The rolls are absolutely amazing. Kids will order a bunch of them from the Beef House and then sell them for fundraisers- the Beef House has a whole fundraiser program. Getting them warm in the restaurant with their strawberry jam is great. It's a big place with plenty of parking. Never had any issues with service. read more

We stopped into the beef house driving from Indianapolis to Champaign. Several years ago, I had holiday party for work here and I remembered the horseradish was excellent. But as an add-on with a meal, I thought that was sorta steep. This is a down-home Indiana type of a place--I remembered it for its rolls and horseradish, not its beef, so I opted out of the steaks or beef. The prices are just too high for the vibe. If you opt for the sandwiches, though, you're in for a treat. Well, sort of. It would be nice if the sandwiches were served with something. Everything is extra, and the sandwiches alone are $8-$10. Consequently, I decided to carbo-load and overindulge in the rolls. 1.5 rolls and a sandwich later, I was pretty full and satisfied. We ordered the fish sandwich and the pork tenderloin, and we weren't disappointed in either. If I come back, I'll do it the same way. I think you can skip the beef, despite it being the namesake. A LANDMARK! The Beef House offers one of Indiana's top salad bars and delicious steaks for reasonable prices. If you're travelling on I-74 near the Indiana-Illinois line, set aside an hour for a great meal at this family owned-and-operated institution. The same goes for anyone venturing north or south on State Road 63 between north of Terre Haute. It's a nice, but casual place with quick, friendly service. It's better than the chains and more healthy than the drive-through windows. Let's face it, a privately owned place doesn't get this big (seats hundreds) and last this long (decades) without attracting and keeping customers with good food, good service and good prices. read more

I have always enjoyed our trips to The Beef House but on the last it was not up to par. the Water is so full of sulpher gas you can smell it when you walk in. had to have the water taken from the table after I took a drink and just about ruined the evening. This same water is used for ice and soups and preparing food and drinks which is in turn effected. My Mushrooms were good. Frog legs had a used grease taste that I had never encountered before. Daughters steak was bland. The wife's steak was tender and had a better flavor. the women had the same soup but they did not even taste the same nor was the appearance or texture the same. I hope issues will be corrected and the old eye for detail and quality returns. read more

My mom and i stopped in while we were driving by. Not a place I would drive the 2 hours to visit, but good enough to stop if you are driving by. Good beef, not sure how aged it was, but good. Was here last night for the first time. We drove from Indy to meet up with friends who recommended this place. Love the atmosphere. The salad bar was delicious. The dinner rolls were to die for. Love the apple butter. I got a 10 oz rib eye and ordered it medium rare. The only thing is that the steak did not have any seasoning. I had to add salt and pepper to eat what I can eat. The ribeye was tough. Overall, the whole experience was good. I am assuming this might be a bad night for the chef cooking the steaks. I will definitely give this place a second chance.
