If I had to use just one word to best describe my Beef/Lamb shawerma: delectable. This place has been a favorite of mine for quite some time, so much so that I even drive all the way from Orland Park to get my shawerma fix. :) Every time I come in the owner greats me as if were old friends and never disappoints. They have the most amazing shawarma sandwich here in the states. Nothing beats this sandwich hands down. They are really great guys and seem very honest. The downfall I have is the sandwich needs Arabic pickles, that's all but it doesn't bother me, that they don't include it. The portions of the sandwich are GREAT! My boyfriend and I decided to try to this place because of the great reviews and unfortunately this place does not have to best shawarma, the chicken has no flavor, only a charred taste, the rice has no flavor either, the pita is cold and dry and taste like they buy it instead of bake it, the best thing was the salad and that only has cucumber tomatoes and onion so it is nothing special. Upon entering, I found a good amount of customers(just the slightest bit uncomfortable with the limited space around me.) The man at the register was ridiculously nice. You really can't give this place anything other than 5 stars, there's absolutely no reason why they would get anything lower. From the food,the taste and quantity served to their service and prices. I ordered a chicken shawarma , beef shawarma, hummus plate and a combination plate. If I really wanted to, I could've shared the portions with 6-7 People.. but I didn't ! It's so delicious and nutritious. As said before the shawarma comes with a can of soda. You can't find a fulfilling meal like that anymore , not for $5.50. The establishment is cash only but they have an ATM inside with the convenience charge at $2.50 (in case you're wondering) I obviously used it. The service was great. Quick and easy with a smile. If I could give 0 stars I would. The price is not even worth the amount of food you get. The food taste bad and it looks ugly like... I don't even want to talk about it. The nerve to even name this place " the best shawarma " puts shame on the shawarma places that actually taste good. It's so bad I want to report this place to the village. And the salad taste old and soggy and the rice looks like maggots and school food. If I were them I would be embarrassed to have this the name of my restaurant. Talk about hidden gems. Quite possibly the best chicken shawarma and falafel I've had in the entire Chicagoland area. Unique, tiny, stand alone super divy food awesomeness at its best here. When your near the MDW area and are hungry, make sure to stop here. Lots of regulars walking in and out. Remeber, it's TINY. Two stools to sit and narrow standing room. Plan to take out or eat in the car or that booth area. The char on the shawarma is simply amazing. This was my fav place when the shwerma was 6$. Everytime fresh meat, now they have increased the price and they have lowered the quality of the food. They mix old leftover meat from the previous day. You can easily taste it. Before this they would have one worker and he would handle everything, now three people are working and still the qaulity is going down. I like this place but if the food is not good and fresh then there is no pint going there. Will spwnd a few more bucks to get fresh meat. This merits a wholehearted "WOW!" Delicious food! The warm pita complements the aromatic and perfectly seasoned beef to a tee. I just couldn't get enough of that sandwich but next time I'll be trying the chicken. I did try the liver, heart and gizzard and it was just as delicious as the shawarma. It had a bit more liver than I would've preferred (I'm partial to the gizzards and hearts) but it was perfectly seasoned just like the beef. I recall when it was named "The Nile" but the food has been delicious every time we go. They don't do credit cards last I was there, however, they're very nice and the hummus is fantastic! Still one of the places I've been to that has the best hummus. Their falafels are delicious as well! I totally recommend going if you're in the mood for a middle eastern snack to go. read more

If I could put no stars, I would. I've been coming here for years. I placed an order ahead of of time and gave them a little extra time. When I got there, they said, "give me 10 minutes." They hadn't started the order. When I came back after the 10 minutes, I asked if they could give me a discount but "he couldn't." I could feel dirty looks from the cook. Anywhere in the Chicago metro area, heading in either direction, at any time of day, Harlem Avenue is a Holy Hell with a capital Hades. I was taking side streets this day to avoid Dante's lost level (his editor cut out Harlem for word count issues.) As I zigged and zagged my way home, I passed a place called Best Shawerma on 79th St. This is a true hole in the wall (assuming there's even a wall) and I found it intriguing. It appears to be a former hot dog or ice cream stand, and the superlative in the name suggested pride in the food and promise for me as a diner. (Or I just appreciated hubris on 79th St.) I had a moment to write down the name and phone number at a stop light. (Please stop honking at me.) Once home (27 hours later. Thanks, Harlem Avenue) I looked up Best Sharwerma on Yelp. 12 reviews, 5 stars. Hm. I am more intrigued. (Please don't mind that I am switching verb tenses. I am aware of it and am being gratuitous in my grammatical abandon, with purpose and aforethought. Or sheer laziness.) And so, on the eve of New Year's Eve, husband and I ventured over. I attempted my rudimentary Arabic greeting (transliterated...."Marhaba" which means something like "Hello!" though rather too formal, I think) and the owner was kind and courteous. He patiently explained several items on the menu, made some suggestions, and generally made us feel welcome. The place is tiny (see above, hot dog stand) and there is little room for dining in, though you can if you want. As we were waiting, a young man came in, greeted the owner appropriately (see below) tossed off an order as he was halfway in and out of the door, and disappeared. When he returned, he looked our way, and said, "Better than Burger King or McDonald's, no?" Hell yes, given the aroma alone, not to mention the warmth of everyone in the place. Soon our food was ready... Got the food home, and....is "yum" a term Michelin would use when awarding stars? It should be. As Gordon Ramsay would say solemnly, "Wow... 'Delicious." Beef was wonderfully marinated, reminding me of German Sauerbraten (by way of Aleppo)...Chicken was tender and moist. Hummos and Jerusalem salad so good; a great combination of vegetables, beans, yogurt, tahini, and spices. Portions are very generous. Meanwhile, to finish a thought, a more appropriate greeting (both hello and goodbye) would be, transliterated (forgive me): "As salam aleykum" and means, "Peace be with you." Sounds like a lovely thing to say in just about any setting. Remember this one too: "Shokran!" which means "Thank you." And you will be thanking the people at Best Shawerma, and you will be back. Hands down BEST shawerma I have had in the states thus far. I travel back home (Jerusalem/ Jordan) every year, and overseas is known for the original shawerma. To have a great constancy of providing the same Shawerma Sandwich every time I get a chance to go there, is awesome! there are other shawerma spots in the area, but it seems after they build their clientele they end up Half A**ing the recipe and loses taste/quality. But for these guys its always been the same, the name speaks for its self. The only CON I have to say about this place is, they DON'T accept credit cards!!!! Wow. After TCB at the DMV, I was in dire need of some sustenance. The Best Shawerma has been on my list of places to try for awhile, and I finally was able to eat there. I ordered the beef shawerma sandwich on a pita and was really impressed with what I received. The beef had a delicious char on it and the amount provided was generous.
